The Comic Book Bears are back with their first post-election episode (recorded 11/12/2020.) This one is admittedly a bit of a hodgepodge. Bryan, Steve and Bill talk about their post-election experiences out of the gate. And the comic book talk is fairly varied. Steve discusses Maids, an new original graphic novel from Fantagraphics by Katie Skelly about the real life Papin Sisters murders. Bryan gives us an X of Swords update. Bill fills us in on Laurel and Hardy Meet The Three Stooges #1 published by American Mythology. Also - though it might be a bit more effective on video - Bill and Steve unbox their most recent DCBS boxes and talk about their newly received comics. Throughout the rest of the episode you will also hear about the promotion of Marie Javins to Editor in Chief at DC Comics, Cross Over #1 (Image), Origins #1 (Boom!), tv series on NXIVM and Scientology, the awfulness of corporate speak, Bill watching things off of Steve's Plex server, the Woofs of the Week and much more!
Sex Criminals has been one of our favorite books over the last seven years, and with issue #69 it has come to an end. We talk about the series from Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky and what it’s meant to us. We also talk Maids from Katie Skelly and unveil our plans to deep-dive into the Love & Rockets books.
Take a break from doom scrolling and listen to some chatter about great indie comics. Brian, Darci, and Logan cover their first Fantagraphics comic and get their true crime and class warfare on as they gush over Maids by Katie Skelly, which tells the story of the infamous Christine and Lea Papin murders. They also discuss Bad Idea's business strategy, the upcoming release of Archaia's Girlsplaining, Mirka Andolfo's Merciless, and cross over to the music world and preview Mitski's upcoming soundtrack for a Z2 comic. Other comics mentioned on the show include Blue in Green, Shuzo Oshimi's Inside Marai, Heavy, Eniac, Under-Earth, and Happy Hour. (Episode art by Katie Skelly)

Sarah Horrocks does it all: she draws, writes, inks, letters and self-publishes her own comics and is a damn good critic too. Katie Skelly's graphic novel My Pretty Vampire blends an array of 60s and 70s references to create a brightly-colored, deceptively sweet-looking comic that explores repressed desires, poisonous relationships, and vampiric murder. Jack and Kate take a pop art journey into the dark corners of the human psyche, taking some side trips into horror conventions, vintage TV, and the films of Jess Franco and Jean Rollin along the way. How has the landscape of horror media changed due to the increased presence of female critics and creators? When is an owl-headed mask just an owl-headed mask? Can a sex kitten transform into a tigress? What does Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass Whipped Cream & Other Delights have to do with any of this? All these questions and more will be answered during this episode of Bad Books for Bad People. We chat about movies from the 1970s, vampire fiction tropes, coloring and design, high culture vs. low, other types of undead creature, Abba, and much more! For Katie Skelly, comics have always been something of side hustle — something she’s never expected or even wanted as a full-time career. During the days, she works at a beloved New York City film house, a gig that gives her front row access to some of cinema’s most impactful work. The influence has clearly bled into her comics work, perfectly exemplified in her new work, My Pretty Vampire, which draws heavily upon the sexy/surrealist horror aesthetic of 70s films of Jean Rollin. Prior to this, Skelly sought a career in fine art, working as a docent at a gallery in the city. She ultimately abandoned that path when it became clear that, even after additional schooling, she’d be hard pressed to earn much more than a career cartoonist — which is saying a lot. Over the years, however, she’s found outlets for her art criticism, from her (now on hiatus) podcast Trash Twins, along with frequent reviews in places like The Comics Journal. All the while, she’s continued her own work in earnest, including the upcoming Patreon-supported work, Summer of Felines.
