Send us a textCan “traditional" education methods be doing more harm than good? Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with renowned author and lecturer Alfie Kohn, as he challenges the status quo of grading and memorization, advocating for a shift towards fostering cooperation, altruism, and empathy in our schools. Alfie reflects on his own unremarkable schooling experience to highlight how ingrained practices often overshadow the deeper educational objectives we should aim for. By questioning whether current methods align with our long-term goals for children, Alfie inspires us to consider the potential for reimagining education to cultivate critical and compassionate thinkers. In a world of standardized tests and rigid curricula, how can teachers empower themselves and their students? We explore strategies for overcoming these systemic constraints by embracing student-centered learning. Alfie and I discuss practical steps like minimizing traditional grading and employing authentic assessments, while also addressing the political nature of educational structures. This episode is a call to action for educators to incorporate more student voice and problem-solving in their classrooms, paving the way for a brighter future in education.

The Dangerous Impact of Progressive Education on School Violence: An Interview with Neil Erian In today's episode of The Rational Egoist, host Michael Liebowitz sits down with Neil Erian, a former math teacher and current engineer in the aircraft industry, to discuss a controversial yet pressing issue: the connection between progressive education and the rise in school shootings. Drawing from his recent article for Capitalism Magazine, titled "Product Safety Alert: Progressive Education," Erian argues that the erosion of discipline, merit-based evaluation, and individual responsibility in schools has fostered an environment where violence is more likely to occur. Together, they explore how educational philosophies that reject objective standards and emphasize collectivist ideals have far-reaching consequences on young minds and, ultimately, on the safety of schools. Tune in for an in-depth conversation that challenges the conventional narratives surrounding both education and school violence. Michael Leibowitz, host of The Rational Egoist podcast, is a philosopher and political activist who draws inspiration from Ayn Rand's philosophy, advocating for reason, rational self-interest, and individualism. His journey from a 25-year prison sentence to a prominent voice in the libertarian and Objectivist communities highlights the transformative impact of embracing these principles. Leibowitz actively participates in political debates and produces content aimed at promoting individual rights and freedoms. He is the co-author of “Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime” and “View from a Cage: From Convict to Crusader for Liberty,” which explore societal issues and his personal evolution through Rand's teachings. Adrien Lievin earned his MA in American history at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Lille (in France). In this episode of the Vegan Visibility Podcast, I am talking with Zoe Weil, co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE). In this enlightening conversation, we delve deep into the transformative power of humane education and solutionary thinking. One central theme we explored was the incredible evolution of humane education since the late '80s. Zoe's journey began with a simple summer job teaching middle school students about animal issues, which turned out to be a pivotal moment in her life. It was during this experience that she witnessed the profound impact of education on young minds. One standout student, in particular, learned about the harsh realities of animal testing and, driven by sheer determination, handwrote leaflets to raise awareness. Instead of distributing them to classmates, he took them to the streets of Philadelphia, becoming an overnight activist. This moment marked the beginning of Zoe's realization of the profound capacity of education to inspire action and create change. This epiphany led Zoe to become a humane educator, dedicated to teaching about the interconnected issues of human rights, animal protection, and environmental sustainability. Through her journey, she founded the Institute for Humane Education, where they empower others to become humane educators and integrate humane education into school curricula. Today, Zoe's programs and initiatives reach students worldwide, empowering them to be solutionaries who can address the most pressing global challenges. It's a journey brimming with hope and determination, recognizing the potential of young people to drive meaningful change in the world. In our podcast episode, we discuss the progress and challenges in animal welfare since the '80s, the pivotal role of education in shaping a brighter future, and how individuals can contribute to creating more compassionate and sustainable systems. I wholeheartedly invite you to embark on this enlightening journey of discovery and action. This week in our education headline roundup, we revisit the Biden administration's debt relief initiatives, tackle Harvard University's trailblazing policy decisions concerning the use of generative artificial intelligence in the classroom, and contemplate whether Elizabeth Holmes might have a new cell mate. Then on to our headliner: John Dewey, father of functional psychology and trailblazing progressive education reformer. Hoping to undo the negative effects of his own educational experiences, Dewey spent decades refining scholarship and research on student-centered learning focused on real-world problems. Moms for Liberty didn't appear out of thin air. They're building on a long history of white, conservative women who, for decades, have used their motherhood as a tool for political credibility. And it all started in 1960s California, where thousands of middle-class moms transformed into suburban warriors and helped build the modern-day conservative movement. This season's cover art features a photograph by Jonathan Wilkins.White Picket Fence is supported by Planned Parenthood.
