Is this modern day idolatry? From Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known by AOC, to teen age activist Greta Thunberg, to the godfather and the older generation's face of climate change, former VP, and politician Al Gore; all have one thing in common: an apocalyptic end of day doom and gloom proclamation about the earth's climate. But does this alarmism spell something deeper? Is this brainwashing Gen-Z to an unattainable quest? Does this movement act as a religious experience substituting the love for God for that of 'mother' earth? If your passion for the issue of climate change exceeds your passion for the gospel, you have an idol in your climate change advocacy. Al Gore (who is not a scientist but a politician) authored an apocalyptic book and movie titled, An Inconvenient Truth. It was reported that a hotel in California replaced Gideon Bibles with Al Gore's book. That's quite the statement.According to Foundation for Economic Education (FEE.org):“Gore's office soon issued a statement saying the 75 percent figure was a "ballpark figure" Dr. Maslowski had used in a casual conversation with Gore several years earlier. Fortunately, both Gore and Maslowski were wrong. The Essential School Sucks, #4 of 50 Theme One: The Real Problems With Public School In 2019, teen anxiety and depression levels had reached startling new highs. Then 2020 happened. Dan Sanchez is the Director of Content at the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and the editor-in-chief of FEE.org. Dan is also the main writing coach for our friends at Praxis. He joins me for a fresh take on a familiar problem: young people are drowning and purposelessness, searching for meaning. Political operators, tech giants, and disingenuous marketers are happy to tap into that desire and angst for their own exploitative purposes, offering young people a pre-packaged "why." John Taylor Gatto said “Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit with which to tackle the big challenges; it should allow you to find values which will be your roadmap through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are, whomever you are with; it should teach you what is important, how to live and how to die.” Instead schools are teaching dependence. And schools are producing mobs. Students are not given adequate encouragement in authoring their own lives, with too many of them surrendering to the K-12 to college to work pipeline. He has written more than a dozen books in Economic History, Political Economy, Development Economics, Business Economics, and Macroeconomics. He has also written several columns for the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and the Mises Institute. Moreover, he published several scientific papers, notably in professional academic journals such as the Journal of Economics and Econometrics. In ‘‘The Moral Case for Capitalism'' we discuss how capitalism is not only moral, but the only moral option, all the alternatives being bad economic philosophies, lead to human perishment. Although it must be noted that neither of us is anarcho-capitalist in the Rothbardian sense, both of us support the intervention of the government in the economy and think of it as a necessary evil due to what we consider inherent inefficiencies of the market, or failures of these as in free riders, the incapacity of a decentralized system to articulate a proper response to external centralized threats or the inability of the market to internalize costs and benefits in certain areas, leading to overproduction of negative outcomes and underproduction of positive outcomes. Price controls are being suggested by some commentators as a way to fight inflation. But, as Lawrence W. Reed, President Emeritus of the Foundation for Economic Education explains, price controls would be a really bad idea. Larry also chats with show host Gene Tunny about whether Jesus was a socialist, why banks and the state should be kept separate, and why President Biden would benefit from lessons on infrastructure from the 21st President Chester A. Arthur. About this episode's guest - Lawrence W. ReedLawrence W. Ms. Kerry McDonald, a senior author and Senior Education Fellow at the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and author of author of Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom (Chicago Review Press, 2019) discusses the power of homeschooling to empower the parent and the child, to spark an independent and resilient entrepreneurial spirit. Do current standardized curriculums prepare students for today’s challenges? Ms. McDonald reviews some of the history of homeschooling and school policy in the United States and covers some of the misconceptions surrounding homeschooling that she encountered firsthand. Interestingly, the estimated number of homeschool students has tripled since the lockdown. Why is that? She breaks through the stereotype of a homeschool student to paint a more robust picture of homeschooling today.  She offers solutions to parents that might be too intimidated to homeschool and covers the academic and social aspects associated with homeschool students. On this weeks episode, we have a crazy guest. Alongside Germinal G. Van, we have a in depth economic talk about Econometrics and The System. We dive into economic principles and philosophy, the different school of thoughts which impact our western civilization, the way it plays out, myths and misunderstandings of why economics and the quantification of that data is so critical to understanding the cause and effects. As individuals, everything we do comes at a cost, and that trade-off (opportunity cost) can be quantified through econometrics. Human dynamics works on the premise of playing a game of producing, consuming and allocating resources. Time, energy, money, property, and goods are all sorts of resources. We work to maintain a living and lifestyle. That implies allocating time and energy, to receive capital to put to work on other resources such to gain wealth, to eat, to live, to make memories. Germinal is a political scientist, economist, and scholar from Côte d'Ivoire living in the United States. He has published over a dozen books in political science and economics. His books include The Economic Development of West Africa in the Twenty-First Century, The Economic Condition of Black America in the Twentieth Century, Classical Liberalism in Africa, and Income Inequality and Economics. In addition to his books, Mr. Van has published numerous scientific papers on Research Papers in Economics, ResearchGate, and Academia.edu; and also published many columns with the Mises Institute and the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE). Mr. Van focuses his work in public choice theory and econometrics. Dan Sanchez is the Director of Content at the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and the editor-in-chief of FEE.org. Dan is also the main writing coach for our friends at Praxis. He joins me today for a fresh take on a familiar problem: young people are drowning and purposelessness, searching for meaning. Along the way, they're handed causes to embrace without question, and thus made useful to various manipulators who don't care about them. Dan and I discuss how these young people can find their way, to rebuild their rudders and develop their own “why." Dan offers advice to both parents and educators. Her work has been the subject of articles in FOX News, The Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), USA Today, CNN Money, and WIRED. She has been a writer, commentator, and panelist for media outlets around the country on subjects like political marketing, campaigning, and social media. She is also the Chapter Leader for AFF-Indianapolis. Chloe and I start our conversation today discussing our roles in AFF (America's Future Foundation) in both Indianapolis and Philadelphia, respectively. AFF is a professional development network for individuals who believe in the power of personal liberty, entrepreneurship, and innovation, channeled through free-markets, to promote positive social change. AFF events bring together like-minded advocates in with each respective community to network, learn from each other, discuss key issues, and ultimately collaborate to improve themselves and the city as a whole. Both Indy and Philly AFF-chapters held seminars in recent months discussing the impacts of the opioid epidemic and the free-market solutions that are available to help mitigate the situation. Chloe and I discuss these AFF events at length, which then leads us to a more generic discussion about healthcare and the free-market solutions that are out there to help "fix" our broken healthcare system. 80º Podcast Mises Brasil - Gabriel Oliva

Mises Brasil
