DISD is considering community service, parenting classes instead of alternative school for troubled students with the hope that this new discipline method will address racial disparities in suspensions, expulsions, and alternative school placements. In March I had the pleasure of spending time at Cornwall Alternative School in Regina Saskatchewan. There I met an incredibly passionate and caring staff along with the funny, smart, and charming students. Cornwall Alternative School brings in youth from every corner of the city that are slipping through the cracks in public, Catholic and private schools. Its whole purpose is to support youth with compassion and empathy that would otherwise likely dropout and get lost in the abyss with societies under privileged. These youth deal with things like addiction, trauma, mental illness and poor home lives. The school relies on donations and partial funding from the local government to stay operational. In this episode I speak with the principal, Bryan Rice and school counsellor Jay Kayseas to get a better idea of how the school started, obstacles a school like this runs into, what some of the needs of their students are and the future hopes for the school. Sergey Kazarnovsky, Director of the Education Center No. 686 "Class-Center", Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation. Sergey was born in 1954, graduated from the Moscow Engineering and Construction Institute in 1976, went to graduate school, went to work at a factory - and began putting on plays. In 1981 he came to work at School No. 69 and together with his friend, English teacher Sergey Loiko, organized there theatrical studio. Why the question arises, did he go to MISI? This would become clear later when he began building his school and supervised the laying of the foundation and erection of the walls himself. In 1985, Kasarnovsky entered the directing department of the Drama School named after Shchukin, and in 1989 he received a degree in drama directing. In 1990, Sergey left school No. 69 for the Palace of Pioneers "Na Miussa" - and the children of the school theater and teachers followed him. A year later, he organized the First International Festival "Theatre Where Children Play". In 1990, Sergey took to the open sea. Under the agreement of the House of Pioneers "On the Miuss" and the school number 69, he recruited the first class. The children studied on the premises of the "Na Miussy" house. But the usual school lessons alternated with unaccustomed ones: there were lessons of music, acting, painting, word-work and "stories about theater. A year later this venture had the name "Alternative School," and another year later "School-Complex 686 "Class Center." "Class Center" constantly participates (and became a prize-winner) in Moscow and all-Russian festivals ("Theatrical vacations", "Young talents of Moscow", "Theatrical games in Lefortovo", "Theatrical ladushki", etc.), and in many international projects (Holland, USA, Luxembourg, France, Ireland, Hungary, Spain, Finland). Sergey's creative activity has found support and recognition in the highest echelons of post-Soviet Russia's government and educational bodies, and he has received many awards. From 1995-to 1996, he was a member of the Commission on Culture and Childhood under the President of the Russian Federation, and since 2002 he has been a member of the Grand Jury of the Moscow Teacher of the Year competition. In 2001 he was the winner of the first contest "Leader of Russian Education". In 2003 Sergey was awarded the honorary title "Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation". ================================ SUPPORT & CONNECT: Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/denofrich Twitter: https://twitter.com/denofrich Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/denofrich YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/denofrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/den_of_rich/ Hashtag: #denofrich © Copyright 2022 Den of Rich. In episode 2 of the Fenom Podcast we are talking with celebrated Charlottesville painter Sarah Trundle. Her paintings are rooted in abstraction, her many layered paintings range rom bold, geometric, brightly colored abstracts, to serene, monochromatic, minimalism. Her style explores the relationship between order and chaos, simplicity and complexity which makes patrons of art take pause and gain a deeper understanding of her work. This is a gift that all great artists have- the ability to stir something deeper within us.  But the journey to get here was not as clear cut and straightforward as it seems. In fact, her gift and passion is a fairly recent discovery.  Sarah grew up just outside of Philadelphia. While she was always creative, her first love was riding horses and rode in horse shows on the weekends.  Sarah went on to attend and graduate from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where she majored in Psychology. Her first job out of college was as a teachers aide for an Alternative School in Washington DC. This job solidified her decision to get her Masters in Social Work. Sarah worked as a therapist, married her college sweetheart and had 3 children.  She discontinued her work as a Therapist after her second child was born and relished the opportunity to stay at home and raise her children.  Once her youngest began school, Sarah had more time to dedicate to herself and she decided to take oil painting lessons. Painting gave her a chance to clear her head, pursue a new hobby and, she found out, she was good at it. Her passion for her new hobby was sparked. She took lessons for years and then went on to participate in art shows with other budding artists and was taken by surprise when she received her first offer from someone to buy one of her pieces.  Now her artwork is represented by several galleries nationwide and she is honored to have her work in numerous private and public collections internationally.  I am excited to talk with Sarah today and explore how we are always in creation of who we are. Our life is just as many layered as her paintings but how do we see the opportunities that that may lead us to another path and listen to the call that we can always be something more.

Having travelled in all 50 states and 65 foreign countries, I have had more adventures and taken more risks than 95% of the world’s population. From scubing diving in Australia’s great-barriar reef to staying a week in the Okavango Delta in Africa where we had to sign a “attack by lion waiver,” my husband and I have chosen to take many somewhat dangerous risks. But unfortunately, I also took the worst risks of my lifetime as a teen-ager. Also unfortunately I would have fit right in with those teens today who seem to be risking and throwing away their lives. We all say, “If I had it to do over…” about things in our lives, and mine certainly would be not to live those horrible years drinking, toking, smoking and hurting my family deeply. But in the end, those negative risks were turned into posive results when I became a teacher f0or at-risk kids, and even help start an Alternative School. I recently tried to get a friend of mine to take a risk, step out in faith and allow his life to be better in the final chapters, than in the beginning. But sometimes it is harder for those who feel they can always save themselves, to not ask for help…and especially not to need a Savior. Support the show (http://www.saltandlightministry.com)

In 1950, Dr. Sam Spinks began teaching school in Jones County, Mississippi. In a career spanning thirty-five years, he worked to expand the curriculum available to high school students. From his first job as a teacher at Soso and later as the Superintendent of Hattiesburg Public Schools, he developed innovative programs to help children from all backgrounds prepare for life after school. In this episode, Spinks recalls how he used to take his eighth classes on educational trips at the end of each school year. He explains how HPS developed the State’s first “Alternative School” to help kids with behavioral problems avoid expulsion, hired the first staff psychologist and expanded the special education program. As times change and maintaining discipline becomes more of a challenge, Spinks feels it is not the students who have changed, but rather, the environment in which they are being raised.  He reflects on how that negatively impacts their behavior and recalls one Alternative School success story.  He also identifies two trends: one he considers to be a positive for public schools and one negative. Valerie has managed to merge the expression of her gift with the burden on her heart for youth; creating compelling work that entertains and transforms lives.  The success of her first self-produced and directed teen stage play, Would You Be Left, propelled her on the journey of creating the teen book series, Set Apart. Set Apart chronicles the drama-filled lives of five friends as their experiences inspire them to reset the "norm" and persuade others to live as they were created and called...set apart. It is a series about tough decisions, mistakes, second chances and forgiveness. It’s a series that keeps it real (and right). There is no topic off-limits.
