Brink as they discuss life lessons, surviving war, and becoming resilient.   In this episode, we talk about: - Surviving the Second World War & living with PTSD - Entrepreneurship & ADHD - Staying fit and healthy as you age   EPISODE NOTES John A. Brink was born in 1940 in Nazi-occupied Holland during the Second World War. From the time he could walk, his days often consisted of foraging for food with his brother and sister during harsh warlike conditions, surrounded by death and hardship, especially during the hunger winter of 1944/45. John's mother was left to raise her three kids alone when their father was drafted into the Dutch Army. They wouldn't know if he was dead or alive until the liberation of their village, by Canadian soldiers, on April 12, 1945. This was the exact moment when John determined he would one day move to Canada - the land of his heroes. He was only five years old when this decision was rendered. Like many others who lived through that time, John has lived his entire life with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), resulting from being in a warzone.  After serving in the Dutch Air Force for two years, John subsequently emigrated to Canada in July 1965, arriving in Prince George with $25.47 in his pocket. John's other lifelong dream of owning a sawmill came to fruition 10 years later in 1975 with the creation of Brink Forest Products, which has since become North America's leading secondary manufacturer of value-added wood products.  At 83, John continues to success in his role as President and CEO of the Brink Group of Companies and 10+ other companies. Judge Lee Roy West 1929 - 2020Lee Roy West has made several thousand friends in over 40 years of public service as a law teacher, state court judge, member of the Civil Aeronautics Board, federal judge and breeder and trainer of national champion bird dogs. Born in Clayton, Oklahoma, Judge West graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree and a law degree. He was a Marine Corp Lieutenant and earned his Master of Laws Degree from Harvard. Even though the West family was poor economically, they were wealthy in many important areas, including humor, wisdom, and friendships. West’s major contribution to Oklahoma and the nation may be his teaching that life is supposed to be fun. It’s not just okay to have fun–it’s required. Many say West’s most endearing trait is to teach those with whom he deals, how to be a good friend.Since taking senior status in 1994 from the federal bench he has remained active hearing cases at both District and Circuit levels and serving as a settlement judge in complex and protracted cases.Judge West is a wonderful storyteller as you will hear in this oral history account of his life, made possible by our founding sponsors and listeners who believe in preserving our state’s legacy…one voice at a time on VoicesofOklahoma.com.

From two collision incidents to heart surgery to being stabbed while intervening in an altercation off-duty — John has been through many traumatic events but has also learned a lot along the way. What a thrill to talk to such an inspiration. Most shows would call it quits or be content with just one guest, but NOT US! How does all this food get cooked? In a kitchen of course and lucky us Chef Kathy Gold the owner of In The Kitchen Cooking School located in Downtown Haddonfield, New Jersey will also be coming in studio. Someone has to teach people how to cook and Chef Kathy is one of the best and most respected in the area as In the Kitchen Cooking School is the premier cooking school in the Delaware Valley. The Idle No More movement began late in 2012 after the Harper Government passed their massive omnibus budget Bill C-45. Four women, Nina Wilson, Sheelah Mclean, Sylvia McAdam and Jessica Gordon all shared a vision in which people can help protect Mother Earth, her lands, waters and people. The women began discussing the possible impacts that some of the legislation would carry if people remained idle. To them, it became evident that women MUST do something about the apparent colonial, unilateral and paternalistic legislation being pushed through Canada's parliamentary system. They began by calling a rally to inform the public that Bill C-45 intended to give the minister of Indian Affairs unprecedented power and they also informed the public on other legislation that may affect and ignore the treaties made with the crown, thereby impacting water, land and people in harmful ways. The women then helped other communities to coordinate efforts to hold similar rallies with the same goal in mind. These rallies took place all across the country and culminated when a National Day of Solidarity and Resurgence was called for December 10, 2012. This was an enormous grassroots event that never in history had seen so many nations and diverse groups of people come together. The speaker will elaborate on why many individual bills relating specifically to First Nations People within Bill C-45 are of particular concern. Speaker: Faye Morning Bull LLB Faye Morning Bull's Blackfoot name is Natoamiskapiakii, Holy Sunrise Woman.
