In episode 248, Mark & Steve tackle an extremely intense and heart-breaking submission by a betrayed partner. Here's what she submitted—I have listened to many of your podcast episodes. An area I wish you would do an episode on is how is a spouse to handle it when your porn addicted/SA husband comes home and discloses (not the first time in our marriage) that he has been acting out for several years and contracted an STD. How am I supposed to forgive and get past that? I can't see ever having an intimate relationship with him. However, we have built a great life (other than his sexual addiction) over our 20+ year marriage. He shows remorse, is in therapy as am I. We have not had a Formal Therapeutic Disclosure yet but it's coming. There are a lot of aspects I'm struggling with but would love an episode on navigating an incurable STD. Sincerely, Heartbroken Spouse. Our hearts go out to this betrayed partner! In too many ways, the consequences and fallout are not only devastating upon disclosure, but also create an ongoing traumatic nightmare! There are serious, long-term and permanent medical implications at play with this example which we are not going to tackle here.IT IS CRITICAL that this couple, if they haven't already, seek immediate medical testing and treatment, as well as education regarding the issues at play and their long-term implications. What this is like for betrayed partners? The compounding effects of ”Complex Trauma”—trickled disclosure, “bomb dropping”A “painful paradox”—facing the devastation & realities of disclosure and PAST/ONGOING trauma while at the same time—”We have built a great life over our 20+ years of marriage”What is authentic for her going forward—her wants and her needs; what is she willing to do and not do; VERY SPECIFIC BOUNDARIES around this! What is this like for the porn/sex addict?WHEN the addict is ALL in and doing the WORK, the CONSEQUENCES & OUTCOMES of his past choices do NOT magically go away! In some ways, this process actually INTENSIFIES! How does he PROACTIVELY meet his betrayed partner's authentic wants & needs; provide as much safety as is possible; be TRANSPARENT about his work; his learning; his progress; PROACTIVE PLANS he puts together and presents–LEAD OUT!What is he willing or not willing to “sacrifice” for this to work going forward? When these two worlds COLLIDE—Addiction & Ongoing Trauma—how can a Couple navigate this?!Be mindful of the tendency to reactively make BIG decisions in the midst of intense emotion BEFORE the recovery & healing processes have had a truly fair chance to unfold, progress and bring about positive change. Create as safe a space as possible for OPEN, AUTHENTIC EXPRESSION & DIALOGUE—NOT avoiding, minimizing, care-taking, shutting down, etc., to escape sitting in and talking about the HARDAlthough CRAZY HARD in the midst of addiction & betrayal, TEMPORARILY pushing a “pause” button and “sitting in a state of grace” while the small, progressive steps in the process unfold. Then, having done “all” you feel you can, coming together to ask, “Are we compatible”? Can we “get” to compatibility? HOW?This will, due to the ongoing nature of the issues, NEED TO BE AN ONGOING DISCUSSION, with appropriate medical and mental health professionals involved. Chris Holman welcomes back Director Phil Roos at EGLE (Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy - State of Michigan, Lansing, MI. Can you explain the primary purpose of the EPA's Get the Lead Out initiative and how it aims to protect public health in Michigan and beyond? Earlier this year, Governor Whitmer and EGLE announced a $290 million expansion of the MI Clean Water Plan. How will this expansion ensure more access to safe drinking water across the state? The expansion of this initiative has created more than 4,000 local jobs. What specific jobs were created and how will this further EGLE's priority of removing lead service lines and ensuring access to safe water for Michigan residents? What other significant investments has EGLE made to ensure the protection and preservation of Michigan's water resources? In your view, how do these initiatives and investments collectively contribute to the long-term sustainability of Michigan's water resources? » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Watch MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/
In Episode 243, Mark & Steve address a very important issue submitted to PBSE by a listener who is the betrayed partner of a porn/sex addict. This question especially resonated with Mark as he himself, along with a number of his children and many of his extended family, have suffered with the challenges of mental illness and related diagnosed issues like ADHD. Here's the submission by a PBSE listener—My husband and I have been friends for close to 20 years, in a relationship for 7 years, and married for 3. He has been addicted to pornography for most of his life, close to 40 years. I started to suspect something a couple weeks before we got married, and he finally confessed his addiction about 6 months later. We now both have CSATs that work together as a team and we have been seeing them for about 18 months. My husband has been doing fairly well, or so I thought, but I have just found out he has been in a relapse for a couple of months. I am of course hurt and angry that he would go back down this road after all the work, time, and money that has been invested in his recovery. He very much wants to get back on track, but feels that I need to take a much larger role in his recovery. I should mention that my husband is diagnosed with ADHD. For this reason alone, he feels he needs me to essentially manage his recovery. If he has homework, sit down and do it with him. Set up our weekly check ins and give him reminders about them. Follow up that he has made therapy appointments, continually check in with him that he is not using porn etc. I do not want to have to manage all this for him. He feels that If I truly care and support him, I will understand that because of his ADHD, this is what he needs in order to be successful. I do know that it is not the wife's place to do this typically. Is there ever a time, for instance when ADHD is present, that this could be a healthy, successful approach to both partners' recovery. Thank you so much.First of all, we have tremendous empathy for those challenged by ADHD. This is NOT an episode about the intricacies of ADHD and how it relates to addiction and recovery. We covered this topic in a very basic sense in Episode 210. This episode is about what it means to be truly PROACTIVE and LEAD OUT in one's own recovery. Mental Illness and Addiction: One of the great challenges in our field is an issue of “What came first, the chicken or the egg?” Did mental illness, trauma, abuse and the like come first and lead to addiction or vice-versa? Mark can speak to this from personal experience . . . What was HORRENDOUSLY HARD for Mark was honestly and vulnerably facing what it means to “own MY side of the street/MY recovery.” What does it mean to “LEAD OUT” and be PROACTIVE? How do you balance this with realities, limited capacities, self-compassion, etc.?With mental illness, trauma, abuse and the like in the mix, there are more “moving parts” to recovery. What IS a reasonable expectation for an individual with both challenges—addiction and mental illness/trauma/abuse? What are the EDUCATION, RESOURCES & TOOLS in today's world?Moving from “me” to “WE” and how to find the balance in the “addict's side of the street” vs. the “partner's side.” What does true “collaboration” look like as a coupleship? How does the betrayed partner of an addict balance her own self-care, betrayal trauma healing and boundaries in this whole process? How does she walk the delicate line of healthy support vs. enablement? In this episode, Dr. Stead asks us to consider the idea of being a Wounded Storyteller. He compares writer Arthur Frank's objectives for being and coping with wounded story identity to the Ramapough's long history of being marginalized, demonized, and contaminated by industry. He suggests that it is their indigenous roots that give them the strength to sustain and to recover both their health and their identity. After a short visit to the Peter's Mine site, we return to Vivian Milligan's yard, and Dr. Stead's intern now meets several other Ramapoughs. As we leave this site, intern Julie is taken with how personable and warm the Ramapoughs she has met are, nothing like the rumored persona that she had heard about these people. And she asks how folks so prejudiced against also deal with this massive contamination of their homeland? In the final episode of this section of Get the Lead Out we breakdown a few other stories of the Ramapoughs, as told by others. Between documentarians and Hollywood screenwriters, we experience the stigmatization of our native brothers and sisters again and again. Here we come to appreciate that after five hundred years of occupation once again we return to the same old colonial crap. Digging further into the Mann v. Ford documentary on the case by the same name, we get down to the skewed justice offered the Turtle Clan with Judge Jonathan Harris's lop-sided case management. And at the end of the film's premier the Turtle Clan are told they have now been given a ‘voice,' and once again white interlopers congratulate themselves. You can buy Chuck's original book "Get the Lead Out" by clicking this link: https://www.bkstr.com/ramapostore/product/get-the-lead-out--custom--428867-1Please remember to tell your friends and family about our podcast and feel free to email us with some of your own stories at: cstead@ramapo.edu
As we deconstruct the HBO documentary, we look back to a March 2010 article by New Yorker writer Ben McGrath. Between disinformation and misinformation, it's difficult to know what and who to trust, especially during a crisis. When disaster does strike, it is critical that scientific information is communicated clearly. Oceanographer Christopher Reddy discusses his experiences relaying vital information during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Scientists are bathing in uncertainty. It is the basis of their work. As Chris says “if I'm certain about something, I'm not going to research it.” But during a disaster, people crave answers, not a comprehensive research paper published 5 years after the event! So a huge challenge for scientists is how to communicate effectively to both the media, the public and all of the stakeholders involved in disaster relief. In this episode, we've reached outside of our traditional box of guests and are talking with a sharp, witty and very informative scientist, Christopher Reddy. Chris is a chemist, but for reasons he explains in the podcast, he most often refers to himself as an oceanographer. He is a leader in the study of marine pollution and the development of environmentally friendly industrial chemicals and works as a senior scientist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic. When the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster struck in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, Chris was one of the sets of boots on the ground, leading the field operations. His expertise in the science of oil spills meant he was thrust into a public facing role which later got him personally entangled in the BP legal case surrounding the liability for the spill. He's written about this experience in his new book, Science Communication in a Crisis: An Insider's Guide. We love bringing you interesting and funny conversations from people like Chris. Ford had his critiques but his campaign to wash his public persona clean clearly worked its magic, his popularity with Adolf Hitler seemed to be tolerated by car driving public, and during the Second World War his arsenal of democracy was also an arsenal of fascism. After hearing Charlie talk about lead head jigs on the Bellied Up podcast, folks from Get the Lead Out messaged Charlie about the impact of using lead fishing tackle on the Loon population. Get the Lead Out (GTLO) is a program within the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that works to reduce the use of lead fishing tackle and minimize its toxic impact on wildlife, including their state bird the Common Loon. Two members from the GTLO team, Kelly Amoth and Stephen Yang, came onto the Cripescast to talk about their work and share why the Loon population is important to the ecosystem, where to find lead-free alternatives, and provide tips on cleaning your tackle box. Of course with Kelly and Stephen being from Minnesota, Charlie couldn't resist bringing up the classic border war topics of who has more lakes and whether it's “casserole” or “hot dish”. Do you know if your child's school has clean drinking water? Julia Geskey is a clean water advocate with Environment Missouri, and she works to ensure there is safe, clean drinking water across the state. Right now, this means working to get the lead out of schools and childcare centers. While this is an often-overlooked issue, it's so important to make sure our kids are not being exposed to this toxic chemical at the place they go to learn and play every day. Environment Missouri just released a "Get the Lead Out" toolkit for parents, teachers, and community members. It includes a fact sheet, sample materials for taking action, and links to additional resources. Most importantly, the toolkit identifies new sources of funding available to school districts to prevent lead contamination. On this week's episode, Julia and Jill Devine discuss the harmful effects of lead and the ladies also discuss what parents can do to help advocate for their child. Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout, brought to you by Addy's Way. Each recipient will receive a custom designed Supermom tote from Addy's Way, in addition to the Shoutout. This week's Supermom Shoutout goes to Jane Timme of St. Peters, MO. Her daughter, Elise, nominated her: My mom is my hero. She raised my brother and me as a single mom, struggling every month, but always made the best childhood for us. She has battled lung cancer by herself, working through her entire treatment and is now fighting lymphoma. She sold the house she's lived in for the last 30 years and moved a block away from me. I can imagine how hard that was, but I love having her close. She is the best mom and nana we could ever ask for. She loves us with her whole heart and is the person I turn to on the worst days to make things better. She's taught me to be strong and independent. She is the strongest momma I know, and I am so blessed to have her as a mom and best friend. Jane - YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom. ** My apologies to Jacques and Paul. When I uploaded their episode there was a technical issue that only allowed the first 20 minutes to be heard. Now that the issue has been fixed, you can enjoy the full episode! ** Not too long ago, Paul Leason and Jacques Cyr left the corporate world to become full-time real estate investors and real estate agents. Today they share their experiences with us, as well as the up's & down's they've encountered along the way. We'll be talking about thieving contractors, renting to prostitutes, getting raided for corndogs (yes, we'll explain), red flags to look for when screening tenants, and watching your property go up in flames! Through all their challenges, Paul and Jacques have managed to find success by watching the numbers and following the data. Jacques also explains the meaning of BRRRR (Buy, Rehab, Rent, Refi, Repeat) and how he's applied those methods in order to force appreciation on his investment properties. Paul shares his experiences with the Grand Rapids Rental Rehab and "Get the Lead Out" programs, and how he's used them to pay for his rehabs. I know you'll enjoy this episode. Both Paul & Jacques are Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate Agents, and work with all types of investors, including out-of-town buyers, to find rental property. You can contact them through email or their websites: paulleason.com www.rubiconinvestmi.com jacquescyr@bhhsmi.com Jacques phone # 617-775-9352

Welcome back to the Get the Lead Out podcast presented by Cal Poly's Center for Leadership and Service! This week we are joined by an alumni by the name of Ryan Vilfer. He's got so much prior involvement in Cal Poly leadership circles that words wouldn't do him justice. Take a listen to hear how life at Cal Poly has influenced the decisions he's making in the real world. It's an extremely insightful podcast and our first over the phone interview!
