On today's episode of The Wholesome Fertility Podcast, Vida Delrahim and Ronit Menashe share their personal journeys from corporate careers to founding WeNatal, a company focused on improving fertility through better prenatal supplements. They discuss the importance of addressing both male and female health in the preconception phase, the science behind their product formulations, and the need for education and resources for couples trying to conceive. Their mission is to empower individuals with knowledge and high-quality supplements to enhance fertility outcomes.   Takeaways Ronit and Vida met at Nike and became best friends. Ronit's experience in functional medicine changed their trajectory. Miscarriages led them to explore fertility solutions more deeply. Men contribute to 50% of miscarriages due to sperm quality. WeNatal was created to support both partners in fertility. Their prenatal supplements are designed for bioavailability and effectiveness. They focus on simplifying the supplement process for women. Education is key in supporting couples on their fertility journey. Their blog offers valuable resources for those trying to conceive. They emphasize the importance of quality ingredients in supplements.   Guest Bio:   Ronit Menashe and Vida Delrahim are the founders of WeNatal, a prenatal supplement company that is transforming the fertility space with the first prenatal supplement optimized for her AND him. WeNatal's mission to change the narrative surrounding fertility and reproductive health is personal; after suffering miscarriages a week apart, Ronit and Vida were given little direction on what to do differently. More importantly, the health of Ronit and Vida's partners(including the health of their sperm) was completely missing from their fertility dialogue with their doctors… something had to change. That is why WeNatal was born, to shift the fertility journey from "me" to "we.” WeNatal is revolutionizing the prenatal space and backed by industry leading Functional Medicine doctors, nutritionists, and fertility experts, including Dr. Mark Hyman and Kelly LeVeque. With 24 key clean, bioavailable nutrients, WeNatal steps up where other supplements fall short for all things preconception to postpartum for both parents and baby.     Websites/Links:    Free Preconception Guide:  WeNatal.com/guide     https://www.instagram.com/we_natal/?hl=en   For more information about Michelle, visit: www.michelleoravitz.com   Check out Michelle's Latest Book: The Way of Fertility! https://www.michelleoravitz.com/thewayoffertility   The Wholesome FertilityFacebook group is where you can find free resources and support: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2149554308396504/   Instagram: @thewholesomelotusfertility   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thewholesomelotus/     Transcript:   Michelle (00:00) Welcome to the podcast for Neat and Vita.   Vida Delrahim (00:02) Thanks for having us. We're so excited to be here.   Ronit Menashe (00:04) So happy to be here.   Michelle (00:06) Yes, so happy to have you guys. And I know that you guys have such an interesting story, first of all, on how you met and also the experience you guys went through together. So without giving anything away, I would love for you guys to share your stories, your personal stories and how that eventually led you to doing your passion project.   Vida Delrahim (00:26) Yeah, I'd love to. So it's fun story because we never envisioned to be in the supplement space. And in fact, Ronit and I met in our corporate careers at Nike close to 18 years ago and became best friends and really just kind of embarked in life together. Ronit went on to work in the functional medicine space and we should all thank our lucky stars that she did because it kind of completely changed our trajectory. So.   I had a miscarriage right when she was having her first daughter. And of course the answers we were given were very dismissive. They were typically like very common, keep trying, you're lucky you even got pregnant, could be the stress, could be a slew of things. They just kind of shove you along as part of the process. And I didn't know any better, of course, having my first and Ronit was actually in the functional med space, immersed and kind of taught me things like, have you checked your thyroid? Have you done this? Have you done that?   Lo and behold, I had Hashimoto's, I didn't even know about it. Just that simple act of fixing my thyroid with medication and visiting an endocrinologist allowed me to have a healthy baby girl. And then fast forward to 2020, I had another miscarriage. And a week after, Ronit had one. And I think this was, it happened a week apart. This was a little bit shocking because...   Like I kind of just accepted that this stuff happens, but Ronit working alongside Dr. Mark Hyman, who's very amazing functional practitioner, she was all about the root cause. She was all about the answers and the questions and the answers she was given was very similar, but she wasn't willing to accept that. Like, you know, there's nothing you can do as an answer.   Michelle (02:02) Mm-hmm.   Ronit Menashe (02:03) And I think for me, Michelle, the reason why it was so shocking was because I was a huge fan of functional medicine for so many years and I already was doing all of the things, or at least I thought I was. I had already cleaned out my house from plastics. I had already, you know, was eating organic food. I was focusing on movement. I was taking pretty good supplements.   or at least what I thought was good supplements. And I was shocked. And when I started to dive into the root of what was happening, because it didn't make sense to me that my doctor said, there is nothing you could do to improve your fertility, literally. It is just common, just keep trying. I thought that makes zero sense. And I'm gonna learn about how to improve my egg quality. I thought.   Michelle (02:48) Mm hmm.   Ronit Menashe (03:01) It was a net quality issue. was 41 at the time. That's what made sense to me. And my biggest aha was when I learned that 50 % of miscarriages happen because of sperm quality. And that was when I called Vida and I said, Vida, did you know that men contribute to 50 % of miscarriages and that 50 that   that sperm quality is easily improved using antioxidants like CoQ10 and AC. In fact, studies after studies show that when men take an antioxidant blend in high dose bioavailable forms, they can quadruple their chances of their partner getting pregnant and having a live birth. So,   That was our big light bulb moment when we thought like, my God, we need to create a prenatal for men. And we need to scream this from the rooftops that men have a huge role, huge role in improving fertility outcomes and pregnancy outcomes for their families. And that was where we started our journey.   Michelle (04:13) It is so important. can't even like tell you. It's so crazy because I have people that go to their doctors and so many times they don't even check the men. And also the DNA fragmentation, which is a whole other thing. Cause like, yeah, you can have perfect sperm numbers and motility and morphology. But if the DNA is off and that can get really impacted by the antioxidants,   then that can make a big difference on so many things on IVF, is so expensive too. So I love that you guys bring this up. It's so important.   Vida Delrahim (04:50) It's so important and how is it that we're so far in like medicine and women's rights, but like yet the burden of fertility still solely is falling so Ronit and I knew that was like the beginning of our mission that one, women and men deserve better products because we can talk about how   once we uncover the fertility and the supplement space, we learn so much, but also that they both need to be leveling up their health. They both need to be part of the conversation. And WeNatal was really born to really level up both partners and bring them together during this journey and give them the best tools and the best nutrition to level up their health in this crucial timeframe, which is preconception.   Michelle (05:32) For sure, and we're neat. So you had a different background and you changed your career like me.   Ronit Menashe (05:38) Well, my background was in marketing. That's where Vida and I met at Nike. And I fell in love with functional medicine when I got into CrossFit and I learned about the Paleo diet. And then I learned about functional medicine. And then I started to do, you know, become, I became a functional medicine patient myself. And this was a year before, you know,   we need years before we natal. And I just fell in love with this idea of medicine of the root cause. And once you learn it, you can't unlearn it. Like that's how you think about everything. It's like, even when, you know, your child has a tantrum nowadays, you're like, okay, like it's not them. Is it there? Is it that they're tired? Is it that they're hungry? Is it that they had sugar? You know, you, you   Michelle (06:27) you   Bye.   Ronit Menashe (06:35) learn about root cause medicine, you realize it, you know, that just everything is connected. And so for me, that was, you know, a big change in my career because I was focused more on marketing. And then I wanted to get into the functional medicine space. I took Chris Kresser's adapt course and, know, kind of started to learn about becoming a practitioner, but   it ended up serving me very well when I met Dr. Mark Hyman and I worked on his private practice and worked on his private practice more from like operations. And then I worked with him on his book launches. So still kind of like in the business side of things, marketing side of things, but more focused on this space that I love so much, which is functional integrative medicine.   Michelle (07:26) That's amazing. so I'm sure with that background, and also realizing that there is a need for this. It really inspired you to do, to have this supplement company.   Ronit Menashe (07:38) 100%. We spoke to Dr. Hyman when we first came up with the idea and he said, I always treat the man when a woman comes to me with infertility. And so what we wanted to do with WeNatal is be able to give everybody access to this kind of functional medicine approach, which essentially means optimizing male fertility and female fertility before trying to conceive.   what it looks like is nourishing your body and kind of, creating that optimal soil for conception. And, know, we always say when you improve your health, you're improving your fertility. And when you're improving your fertility, you're improving your health. And we hear from so many customers that, you know, let's say men, for instance, they're taking we natal for him. And all of a sudden they have a libido all of a sudden.   They have energy, they focus, their hair is growing. So that's kind of the side effects and the byproduct of working on improving your sperm and egg quality is you actually also feel good when you're nourished. You feel good when you're depleted from nutrients. Of course, you're going to be tired. And so many people just accept   this notion of like, I'm getting older so I should be tired or I'm getting older I should be losing my hair or I'm postpartum I should be   Michelle (09:06) Like it's normal,   normal versus common.   Vida Delrahim (09:08) Exactly.   Exactly.   Ronit Menashe (09:09) Exactly. Exactly. So   yes, these things are common, but they're not normal. And Vida and I just, you know, had this like life circumstance where we realized like it's our mission now to educate people on the importance of preconception, that there is so much you could do as a couple. He needs to be part of the equation. And when we started WeNatal, we didn't know if the men would be into it, but we're happy to say   Our we-natal men are amazing. We have so many incredible couples that are doing this together from day one. And we're always saying like, they're gonna be the best dads. If they are participating in fertility so early, they are amazing parents already.   Michelle (09:56) So yeah, for sure. And talk about like the different ingredients or the and what they do when it comes to both egg and sperm quality. And you can take your time on this   Ronit Menashe (10:08) for sure. Well, you know, here's the thing. We didn't think that the world needed another prenatal for women because there are so many prenatals out there, thousands. know, and. But when we started to dive into it and particularly for us, we were taking these packets made out of plastic that had seven pills in them.   And we just thought women deserve better. Why do they need to take seven pills? Why do they need to throw out plastic every day? Like we care about creating these healthy little humans. What about the environment? there was that. Then when we looked at the lower level prenatals, we noticed that a lot of the ingredients were not bioavailable. So what does that mean?   not everybody could utilize the nutrients that are part of those prenatals. So let's use folic acid as an example. When a prenatal has folic acid, that is the synthetic form of folate, which a lot of prenatals on the market, like if you go to a CVS or a Target, they have folic acid. And if somebody has the MTHFR genetic mutation,   They cannot utilize that folic acid. And so that nutrient is actually harmful to them. So for we natal, all of our nutrients are bioavailable. They're all in the methylated B form. like methyl folate or 5MTHF. So first of all, we have bioavailability. Second of all, comprehensiveness.   A lot of the prenatals on the market have 12-ish ingredients. We have 24 nutrients and we wouldn't leave one nutrient out. And it's very important because each and every one of our nutrients that are in our prenatal serves a very specific purpose for mom and baby and health of the pregnancy. And then you have...   dosages because even if something has 24 key ingredients like we natal the Dosages make a big difference. So using choline as an example choline We natal has 400 milligrams choline is crucial for baby brain development and the research shows that a pregnant woman needs 450 milligrams and a lactating woman needs 550 milligrams the average   Choline intake in the American diet, which you get choline from egg yolks is around 180. So we natal has 400 to be able to support that postpartum mom and obviously the pregnant mom, but there are prenatals on the market that have 50 milligrams. Now this is crucial for cognition of baby, brain mass, baby brain development.   Michelle (13:15) Mm-hmm.   Ronit Menashe (13:22) And so we were like, we have to create a prenatal for us because what we were doing is we were taking that base prenatal. We were adding choline. We were adding vitamin D. We were adding folate. We were adding iron. And most women are not going to do that. Most women are not going to, you know, take 10 plus pills a day and spend all that money on   all of these nutrients. We were doing it because we were immersed in the research and we saw how important these nutrients were. But we wanted to create a product that made it simple and easy for women and men to take their prenatal. Our packaging is beautiful and the reason is, well, first of all, we love nice things, but also,   Michelle (14:15) Thank   Ronit Menashe (14:16) We   wanted it to be part of people's home, people's life. So they're not hiding their prenatals in their, you know, cabinets that they can take it every day because consistency, like everything in health and wellness, consistency is what's going to make the biggest difference. And so that's kind of from a high level. And then, you know, you asked me what's in the prenatal and we can geek out a little bit more on the nutrients and what they do.   But what's not in the prenatal is also a big, big key because a lot of supplements on the market have a ton of additional ingredients and those ingredients are harmful for fertility and just overall health. And so it's important. We always say it's important to look at the nutrition facts.   but also look underneath the nutrition facts like what else is in there that shouldn't be in there and we natal doesn't have any additional fillers. And we do that because we manufacture in smaller dosages. We're not manufacturing in mass. Our shelf life is only two years where it's not like some prenatals that their shelf life is forever.   which, you know, for us, we're fine. We're doing things in smaller batches. And, you know, from a business perspective, it complicates things, definitely complicates Vida's life because she's on the operation side of things, but we're doing the right thing for the consumer. And that's what matters to us the most.   Michelle (15:43) .   So I know that like for my patients, for example, I'll give them certain supplements, preparing, including a prenatal, but then I'll also add more supplements that I don't necessarily have them continue taking after they're pregnant. So some that are more like to beef up the quality of the eggs. Do you guys have different ones or is it like certain? Yeah.   Vida Delrahim (16:13) Mm-hmm.   Ronit Menashe (16:16) Yes.   Yes. So we have our foundation support, which is the prenatal for him and for her. That is the multivitamin for men slash sperm support. And for women, it's the prenatal that has key nutrients for before, during, and after. But for those who want to beef up their egg quality, and we could talk about the scenarios in which you would need this product or not.   Michelle (16:35) Mm-hmm.   Ronit Menashe (16:44) We have a product that we launched this year called Egg Quality Plus, and it's five nutrients in one. So it's the five nutrients that we were taking after our miscarriage, CoQ10, NAC, PQQ, alpha lipoic acid, and L-carnitine. And what these nutrients do is they help improve egg quality. How do they do it?   Michelle (16:49) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Ronit Menashe (17:12) These nutrients are very specific nutrients that help improve mitochondria. We know that the three months before you ovulate, the egg that you ovulate with is going through all these processes that are very complex that require very strong mitochondria. So your mitochondria is like the battery of the cell. And if the battery is low,   that process is not gonna go well and you're gonna end up with chromosomal abnormalities. So it's important to quote unquote charge the battery before you start trying so that when that process does take place, it happens with no or limited errors, if that makes sense. So we recommend for women who are either older or maybe had recurrent miscarriages or   Michelle (18:00) Yeah.   Ronit Menashe (18:09) Just wanna know that they did everything possible in the preconception timeframe to take Egg Quality Plus with our prenatal, which the prenatal also includes nutrients that help improve egg quality like folate, vitamin D. By the way, 4,000 I use a vitamin D. I don't think any prenatals on the market have that. And then, you you talked about in the postpartum phase, like for us,   what was very important to include in our prenatal is iron because in the postpartum phase and in third trimester, a lot of women are very depleted from nutrients because you require more iron in that timeframe and just to help with postpartum recovery and all of those things. So our prenatal has iron in it as well.   So what we wanted to do with the prenatal is be able to simplify people's lives and give them a tool that they can use before, during, and after. Then if somebody wants that extra boost, they could get that Egg Quality Plus B4. And that's kind of the philosophy. We wanna make it simple and easy. And the other thing that I didn't mention is our prenatal dosage is three pills a day. And so...   Michelle (19:13) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm   Ronit Menashe (19:31) We just don't think it's realistic to ask women to take eight pills plus per day for their prenatal, especially in their first trimester when they're nauseous and they're throwing up and they can barely stomach any food.   Michelle (19:41) Yep. yeah, for sure.   And then as far as the iron, I know there's many different forms of iron and some can cause constipation. So I just wanted to ask about that.   Ronit Menashe (19:53) Yeah, so the forms, we didn't get into the like real geekiness of our forms, but every single one of our forms are the best form that we can find. And we use a patented iron that doesn't constipate called ferrochell. And we do the same with some of our other ingredients, like our choline is microencapsulated. Every, our selenium is this like super special selenium.   Every single one of our nutrients is sourced from the best of the best because we feel like women deserve the best. This is such an important time in people's lives and the nutrients really make a big difference and can make or break your journey.   Michelle (20:43) I love that. I love that you're really putting attention to detail because it does make such a difference. And the thing is the thing, the reason why I'm asking also is just from my perspective as a practitioner, I'm always looking for supplements that can address so many issues. And what I find myself doing is getting a bunch of different things and then having to give so many different supplements and so many different bottles. So I love the fact that you guys have   this really like thought out. It's really nice.   Vida Delrahim (21:16) Well, that's essentially what   Ronit was doing with me when we were on this journey together. She was AKA my doctor. And she's like, look at all the research shows that you need add iron you add this and so it ended up being I don't know Roni at some point I swear it was like 1215 maybe capsules because of all the additions some of it was drops. I could not keep up Ronit was a champion at taking supplements she could like down 10 at a time. I was nursing a couple meal   Michelle (21:41) Yeah.   Vida Delrahim (21:43) And of course   I wouldn't even comply. And so that was when also the idea of we need to like the ease and simplicity is so important. We're all busy, but we want to know that we're giving our body the best nutrients. I had guilt about not taking enough because I literally just couldn't down pills as quickly as some people can. And so the fact that we're able to get these 24 quality bioavailable ingredients into three capsules took us years. And we're so proud of that because it is the nutrient density of six to eight capsules in three.   And so that's what we were doing. We realized it wasn't feasible for everybody. Not everyone is at a road who can just chug them along. We realized this world had to be reinvented.   Michelle (22:23) yeah, for sure. Well, this is great. mean, lots of great information. I'm looking at your website right now, actually. Yeah, you guys definitely, it looks like you guys did a lot of research and you also have a blog, which is great. Cause I think it's so important to educate people that are on this journey.   Ronit Menashe (22:44) Well, that is exactly what we didn't have. It's so hard to reliable information that you can trust. And so we have an amazing blog and we put out so much great content on literally any topic under the sun from what to do if you just got diagnosed with gestational diabetes to, okay, how do you create a clean nursery to you know how to you know the fertility crisis you know we span everything on the blog and we share about it in our newsletter and we have an amazing guide with nine preconception tips if your listeners want to go to we natal.com slash guide they get our free couples guide and it's a really great starting point and a lot of the things that couples could do to support their fertility is free it doesn't have to be like   complicated or fancy. It's a lot of like free things. And so that guide is a really great resource.   Michelle (23:50) Awesome. Well, this is great information and you guys, this isn't a sponsored episode. It really is me wanting to find out more because there are amazing new things out there. And I think that it's important to hear all the different perspectives and really get it from the founders. So thank you guys so much for coming on and for people who are looking to learn more, how can they find you guys?   Ronit Menashe (24:19) They on we natal.com our website on social. We're very active and that's where we also share a lot of the new research at we underscore natal. And also we're happy to hear from your listeners. Anybody has questions or needs help or needs us to point them in the direction of some something or some article they can DM us at our, on our Instagram where we're most active.   Michelle (24:49) Awesome. Well, I loved this conversation and I loved all the details and the nerdy aspects of it because for me, I really liked the breakdown. think one thing that I find is that you want to find the smartest audience. It's usually a fertility audience. They're so smart because they do so much research on their own health and they really look into much more than the doctors give them. so,   So I know that they like to find out really detailed information. So thank you for that. And thank you so much for coming on today.   Vida Delrahim (25:26) Thanks for having us. We're excited to support you and your community.   Michelle (25:31) Awesome.   Ronit Menashe (25:31) Thanks, Michelle.

Dr. Devin Stone, a naturopathic doctor specializing in oncology and regenerative medicine, brings a wealth of expertise in fields such as nutrition, cancer biology, and alternative medicine. His career journey began with studies in regenerative medicine and oncology, though he initially doubted his ability to work in the challenging field of oncology. However, his clinical experiences revealed the profound rewards of building meaningful connections with patients battling cancer, inspiring his focus on integrative oncology. Dr. Stone now serves as a medical advisor for Halene Products, championing their flagship product, Halene 951, which is widely used in clinics for its excellent results. In discussing soy, Dr. Stone highlights its dual reputation as both beneficial and harmful, depending on factors such as processing and genetic modification. Soy contains phytoestrogens like isoflavones, which, contrary to early misconceptions, can protect against estrogen-related cancers by blocking harmful pathways. Dr. Stone emphasizes the importance of selecting high-quality soy products, favoring organic, non-GMO, and fermented options to avoid issues like pesticide contamination and phytic acid, which can harm gut health and block mineral absorption. Halene 951 stands out as a superior soy-based superfood, offering benefits such as complete protein content and advanced fermentation processes that enhance its nutritional profile and efficacy.Fermented soy products, such as Halene, offer significant health benefits, particularly in supporting immune function and providing essential nutrients. These products are rich in proteins needed to produce white blood cells, which help combat diseases and boost overall immunity. Research shows that fermented soy can activate natural killer (NK) cells, which target and destroy cancer cells, while also offering easily digestible nutrients for individuals with compromised health, such as cancer patients or those undergoing chemotherapy. Additionally, fermented soy has applications in managing inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and even mental health conditions like PTSD by reducing brain inflammation and supplying essential vitamins and amino acids.Despite its benefits, fermented soy products should be used under medical guidance, particularly for individuals with thyroid concerns, as soy can have goitrogenic effects. However, most cases show a favorable cost-benefit ratio, making the product safe and effective for a wide range of patients. The product's taste, often described as unpleasant, can be mitigated by mixing it with other ingredients or using flavored options. In clinical practice, fermented soy has demonstrated efficacy in improving treatment outcomes for patients with serious health conditions and enhancing recovery for athletes, proving its versatility as a preventive and therapeutic tool.In conclusion, the fermented soy product offers a powerful, nutrient-dense solution for supporting immune function and overall health, particularly for those with cancer, autoimmune conditions, or compromised gut health. Its ability to boost NK cells and provide essential proteins makes it an effective tool for immune system enhancement. While it is generally safe for most individuals, caution is recommended for those with thyroid concerns. With its versatility in dosage and easily digestible formulation, this product serves as an accessible option for addressing nutrient deficiencies and supporting the body's natural defense mechanisms, contributing to better health outcomes.Dr. Devin Stone's Background and Expertise: Dr. Stone has a diverse educational background, including degrees in medical biology, regenerative medicine, and naturopathic medicine, with certifications in oncology, nutrition, and alternative medicine. He now focuses on oncology and regenerative medicine, serving as a medical advisor for Halene Products. The Science of Soy and Phytoestrogens: Soy contains phytoestrogens, specifically isoflavones like genistein, which can block harmful estrogenic activity by binding to beta estrogen receptors. This mechanism makes soy potentially protective against cancer, contrary to earlier beliefs that it might exacerbate estrogen-positive cancers.Importance of Quality Soy Products: High-quality soy should be organic, non-GMO, and preferably fermented to reduce harmful compounds like phytic acid and enhance nutritional benefits. Products like Halene 951, grown in specific conditions and processed using nitrogen fermentation, exemplify the ideal soy-based superfood.Immune System and Nutrient Support: The product supports immune function by boosting natural killer (NK) cells and providing essential proteins needed for white blood cell production, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with cancer or autoimmune conditions.Versatile Use and Safety: It is generally safe for most individuals, with potential caution advised for those with thyroid issues due to possible goitrogenic effects. Dosages range from 1-2 ounces daily for prevention to up to a full bottle for severe conditions.Highly Concentrated and Easily Digestible: As a fermented soy product, it delivers a dense nutrient load in an easily digestible form, suitable for individuals with gut inflammation or difficulty absorbing nutrients, such as cancer or autoimmune patients.----Grab my book A Better Way to Treat Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Most Effectively Treating Our Biggest Health Threat - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM1KKD9X?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860 Unleashing 10X Power: A Revolutionary Approach to Conquering Cancerhttps://store.thekarlfeldtcenter.com/products/unleashing-10x-power-Price: $24.99-100% Off Discount Code: CANCERPODCAST1Healing Within: Unraveling the Emotional Roots of Cancerhttps://store.thekarlfeldtcenter.com/products/healing-within-Price: $24.99-100% Off Discount Code: CANCERPODCAST2----Integrative Cancer Solutions was created to instill hope and empowerment. Over the past few weeks, I have covered equine metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and thyroid function. One of the minerals essential for many of those physical processes is selenium. So, today, I take a closer look at selenium, providing an in-depth analysis of this essential nutrient. By understanding the role of selenium, recognizing signs of deficiency, and knowing when to supplement it, we can make more informed decisions for the health of our horses. Join us to learn all you need to know about selenium and the diet and lifestyle risk factors that could result in a selenium deficiency. An Overview of SeleniumSelenium is an antioxidant crucial for holistic equine health. Antioxidants like selenium scavenge free radicals, aiding detoxification and supporting the immune system. They are particularly beneficial for horses facing toxicity or immune challenges.Supplementation Duration and ImportanceWhile I do not recommend ongoing daily supplementation for all nutrients, selenium is an exception due to common deficiencies, especially for horses prone to equine metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. It is best to start with intensive supplementation before transitioning to a maintenance regimen, typically three to four times weekly, to ensure optimal long-term selenium levels. The Roles and Benefits of SeleniumSelenium serves a range of functions beyond supporting the immune system, supporting healthy skin, hair, hooves, muscle function, and thyroid health. It is also crucial for metabolic balance and is particularly essential for working horses due to their higher demand.Deficiency Signs and RisksMany horses show deficiency symptoms due to inadequate selenium levels in their diet and environment. Signs of selenium deficiency include weakened hooves, skin issues, hair loss, fatigue, liver toxicity, poor immunity, muscle issues, and thyroid dysfunction. Balancing Deficiency and Toxicity ConcernsWhile selenium toxicity has historically been a concern, deficiencies are far more common. Organic selenium forms like selenomethionine are safe and highly bioavailable, mitigating toxicity risks associated with inorganic forms like sodium selenite.Supplementation GuidelinesFor horses deficient in selenium, a loading dose of 2000 micrograms per day for a few weeks, followed by a maintenance dose of 1000 micrograms, works well. Dosages must be tailored to the requirements of each horse and monitored for optimal results.Long-term ConsiderationsGiven how common selenium deficiencies are and the critical importance of selenium for equine health, maintaining a regular supplementation routine that gets adjusted to suit the individual needs of each horse is prudent for their overall well-being.ConclusionUnderstanding the significance of selenium, recognizing signs of deficiency, choosing the appropriate form for supplementation, and implementing a tailored regimen are essential steps in optimizing equine health and performance. Regular monitoring and adjustments will ensure sustained benefits and support for equine health and vitality.Links and resources:Connect with Elisha Edwards on her website Join my email list to be notified about new podcast releases and upcoming webinars.Free Webinar Masterclass: Four Steps to Solving Equine Metabolic Syndrome Naturally

As we visit the third and final "Top Episode of 2023", we will turn our attention to our relatively new best red light therapy friend: methylene blue! For those of you that have already heard this episode and/or are familiar with this polarizing substance, this episode is a fantastic review; for those of you that are less familiar, this is a great introduction into the vast potential of methylene blue....    Let's get blue on today's solosode of The Red Light Report! The last couple of weeks you have likely heard and/or learned about BioLight's newest innovative product, BioBlue, which is an enhanced methylene blue and mitochondrial supplement. Some of you are even using it right now! But I felt it would behoove all of us to take a deeper dive into this mysterious synthetic textile dye that happens to seemingly be one of the most profound health, wellness and mitochondrial-boosting substances available. And it is a major synergist when combined with red light therapy!   So today, I thought it would be great to review the top 10 uses for methylene blue, as professed by scientific research. And while I don't want to give away too much in this intro, I feel obliged to tell you a few of the things that I find most exciting and promising about methylene blue:1.) Secondary to its ease of crossing the blood-brain barrier, a vast majority of the methylene blue consumed concentrates in the brain, which is why it has virtually endless brain health benefits (i.e., reduced symptoms of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia, depression, PTSD and improved cognition, mood and energy);2.) Methylene blue has an innate intelligence to help whichever cells are most sick, diseased and/or cancerous first before moving along and helping other healthier cells;3.) There are only two known interventions capable dissociating nitric oxide from the cytochrome c oxidase (which then allows oxygen into the mitochondria for more efficient energy production; remember, the more energy in a cell = less disease state/more vitality in cell): red light therapy and methylene blue.   Remember, none of this information is a substitute for medical advice. But just like when I learned about red light therapy for the first time and was in awe at its endless health benefits, I am equally impressed by the limitless potential of methylene blue. Both are safe, efficacious and likely have a pivotal role to play for anyone looking to optimize their health and longevity. As always, (red) light up your (blue) health! - BioBlue, BioLight's newest product: (0:00) Diving into methylene blue: (7:30) Malaria cured in 48 hours: (10:48) Brain function and methylene blue: (12:29) Metabolism and methylene blue: (21:07) Top ten benefits of methylene blue: (21:56) Combining methylene blue and red light therapy: (29:16) COVID-19 and methylene blue: (30:03) Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and methylene blue: (33:30) Dosages: (38:48) Hallmarks of Alzheimer's and methylene blue: (39:54) Metabolic hallmarks: (41:04) Red light therapy and methylene blue for dimensia: (43:11) Cognitive enhancement: (45:23) Depression: (48:56) Autism: (54:41) Endotoxin in the gut: (1:01:02) Pain relief: (1:03:49) The heart: (1:09:53) Cancer: (1:11:48) Red light therapy and methylene blue: (1:14:07) Methylene blue therapy for cancer: (1:16:14) - Book referenced from the episode: The Ultimate Guide to Methylene Blue, by Mark Sloan - Exclusive 15% discount on BioBlue for The Red Light Report listeners! Bark n Wag 15 Minute Vet Talk

Managing canine diabetes Giving your dog a long, happy life Symptoms of diabetes  Excessive thirst (drinking water)  Increased urination Weight loss (even if eating well)  Decreased appetite  Cloudy eyes  Chronic or frequent infections, including skin and urinary infections  Learning your dog has diabetes can feel like a punch to your gut. Up to 1% of all dogs may develop diabetes during their lifetime. While this is a serious diagnosis, treatment options and management strategies can give your dog a long, quality life.  Diabetes mellitus revolves around a lack of insulin or a lack of the body's response to insulin. Insulin therapy is a mainstay of treatment. Understanding your dog's prognosis As with so many canine health problems, early diagnosis is key to your dog living a full life. Caught early, with treatment started right away and careful monitoring, many dogs with diabetes live full, active lives. The battle will be more difficult with dogs who have these issues:  Phosphate levels Dogs who have high levels of phosphate in their blood at the time of diagnosis tend to have a slightly less positive prognosis. The exact reason for this is unknown, but it emphasizes the need for a complete blood chemistry panel at the time of diagnosis.   Medical history Dogs who are more than 10-years-old, overweight, have a history of pancreatitis or are battling hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) are more likely to have problems.  Dogs with hypothyroidism have a slightly higher risk of becoming diabetic, and any dog who has required treatment with glucocorticoids for long periods of time is also at risk.   Breeding A study from the United Kingdom suggested that Border Terriers, West Highland White Terriers and Cocker Spaniels had lower survival times than Border Collies.  Tibetan Terriers, Cairn Terriers and Samoyeds are also considered high-risk breeds for diabetes.   Females  While female dogs have a higher risk of developing diabetes, if they are spayed, they can be managed quite well.  Starting therapy After your dog has been definitively diagnosed with diabetes, treatment with insulin will be the starting point. Dogs who are ill may need to be hospitalized and started with rapid-acting insulin injections. Most dogs will be feeling relatively well and can start treatment at home under veterinary guidance.  Customizing treatment for diabetics is essential. Individual dogs may respond to one type of insulin but not another. Some dogs become resistant to a certain type after time and need to change. Dosages can vary greatly among dogs, as can the timing of dosages. Typically, dogs will start off on insulin injections twice a day, around their feeding times. But be prepared for the experimentation necessary to find the ideal protocol for an individual dog.  Veterinary staff will explain how to handle and store insulin, and how to correctly use the syringes. Different strengths and types of insulin come in different units, and you need to carefully match the syringes you use with the insulin type. Insulin is sensitive and must be stored carefully, not too cold or too hot. Even shaking it too vigorously can harm this medication. Some insulins need to be rolled rather than shaken. Never use insulin past its expiration date.  Finally, you will learn how to give the injections. Some clinics have you practice on something like fruit until you are comfortable with doing the injections properly. Injections are given subcutaneously, reaching the fat between the surface skin and muscle below. The needles are a small diameter and very sharp, so most dogs handle the injections well. Needles and syringes need to be disposed of properly. You will need a sharps container and to learn how to dispose of the needles in your town.  Types of insulin There are many versions of insulin available for treating diabetic dogs, and your veterinarian will guide you to the best choice for your individual dog.  FDA-approved for use in dogs:  Porcine lente (Vetsulin)  Zinc insulin (ProZinc)  Used off-label with good results:  Detemir (Levemir)  Glargine (Lantus)  Isophane insulin, known as NPH (Novolin-N, Humulin-N)  All insulin drugs should only be used under the guidance of your veterinarian, with regular check-ups. Insulin costs will vary among products.  Insulin-glucose response curve Once you have the basics down, you will help fine-tune your dog's treatment. Trial and error is used to determine the best insulin, the ideal dose, timing and how to coordinate feedings with the dosing schedule. For the first week or two, while your dog's body adjusts to the insulin and you get your routine down, your veterinarian may have you monitor your dog via urine glucose strips. These give you a rough idea as to whether your dog is handling the insulin without getting their glucose levels too low. The ideal method for determining all these factors is to create a glucose response curve. Glucose is one of the main factors influenced by insulin. Tracking results of glucose in the blood is an easy way to know if your insulin dose is correct. Urine glucose monitoring can also help but is not as precise.  To create a glucose curve, blood glucose levels are checked about every two hours over a 12-hour period, if possible. That many blood tests can be expensive, but it is worth it to get your dog on the right track. Using the glucose curve, your veterinarian will see when the insulin starts to act, how long a single dose provides treatment, when the insulin is at its highest level of activity and when it fades out. While running the glucose curve, your dog's feeding (timing and portions) are carefully controlled. Based on the highs and lows of the curve, adjustments may be made in dose, timing of meals and amount fed.  Normal blood glucose levels in healthy dogs are 80-120 milligrams per decilitre (mg/dl). Most dogs can handle levels going as high as 250 with minimal side effects. Post mealtimes, some dogs may normally go up to 400 but that is a temporary effect. Once blood glucose levels go over 200, glucose will be detectable in the urine.  Factors influencing insulin dosing Because glucose is a basic nutrient, many factors can affect a dog's requirements. Obese dogs need to lose weight, so that should be factored in. If your dog has a successful weight-loss program, insulin amounts will decrease. Activity levels also require different amounts of insulin. A dog who is running agility trials will end up with a different dose than a dog who strolls sedately around the block once or twice a day. Female dogs who go into heat will often have different insulin needs than a spayed dog ( — it is generally recommended to spay an intact diabetic female to even out insulin requirements). If your dog is sick or becomes hypothyroid (low thyroid hormone production), their insulin needs will change. If your dog skips their morning meal and doesn't eat, you need to contact your veterinarian to discuss adjustments in the insulin dose. Insulin needs the “raw material” of the food to be effective.  Monitoring your diabetic dog  If your dog is not showing any clinical signs of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar or glucose levels), such as drinking more than usual, being extra hungry or urinating excessively, then your dosing should be in the right ballpark. Even so, periodic blood testing is recommended.  Having hypoglycemia (low blood sugar or glucose levels) is more serious. If your dog is very lethargic, sleeping more than usual and resisting activity, then they may have hypoglycemia. Some of these dogs will have tremors, difficulty walking and can collapse into a coma.  The brain is very dependent on glucose for its nutrition, so any changes in mental state could mean hypoglycemia. If you suspect this, you can put corn syrup or honey on your dog's gums. If they are alert, a meal of cooked pasta with some syrup or honey can help to quickly raise their blood sugar. The response should be fairly rapid. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect that your dog has high or low glucose levels. Fairly new on the scene are continuous or flash glucose-monitoring systems. These high-tech systems use an electrode inserted in the subcutaneous tissues of your dog. They give off a small current determined by the amount of glucose in the interstitial tissues. That charge is then converted to a glucose amount and displayed on a monitor.  Two systems have been used successfully in veterinary medicine: the MiniMed iPro2, a continuous monitoring system, and the Abbott Freestyle Libre, which is a flash system. These systems can provide a picture of your dog's daily blood glucose levels while they are at home and doing normal activities.  Best management practices The goal with your diabetic dog is to mimic a healthy dog's glucose status. You want a normal rhythm with no clinical signs of too high or too low. That means a steady routine, ideally feeding your dog the same diet, at the same time every day. Plan your dog's activity for each day. If you have an unusually active day planned, ask your veterinarian ahead of time about any recommended adjustments in insulin or food. A steady state minimizes long-term damage from diabetes to organ systems like the heart, liver and kidneys. Even dogs who are well-managed may eventually develop cataracts, but it takes longer in dogs who have relatively well-controlled glucose levels.  Once your dog is on a set schedule, costs and complications are minimal.  Side effect cataracts Cataracts are a common side effect of canine diabetes. These cataracts tend to mature quickly and may be associated with inflammation. A veterinary ophthalmologist can evaluate your dog's eyes to determine if cataract removal would improve vision.  If the ophthalmologist recommends removal, a well-regulated diabetic dog can have general anesthesia and surgery to remove the damaged lens. An artificial lens may be put in place at that time. If your dog is not a surgical candidate, don't despair. Blind dogs usually adjust well to their loss of vision.  Prognosis With careful monitoring, many dogs with diabetes live full, active lives. It is important for owners of diabetic dogs to keep a notebook charting daily dosage, diet, and activity. Doing so can alert you to any developing problems.  This article has been reprinted with permission from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine's DogWatch newsletter, published by Belvoir Media Group.

Examining how almonds can affect appetite, researchers found that a snack of 30-50 grams of almonds could help people cut back on the number of kilojoules they consume each day. Published in the European Journal of Nutrition, the study found that people who consumed almonds – as opposed to an energy-equivalent carbohydrate snack – lowered their energy intake by 300 kilojoules (most of which came from junk food) at the subsequent meal. “Our research examined the hormones that regulate appetite, and how nuts – specifically almonds – might contribute to appetite control. We found that people who ate almonds experienced changes in their appetite-regulating hormones, and that these may have contributed to reduced food intake (by 300kJ).” The study found that people who ate almonds had 47 per cent lower C-peptide responses (which can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease); and higher levels of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (18 per cent higher), glucagon (39 per cent higher), and pancreatic polypeptide responses (44 per cent higher). Glucagon sends satiety signals to the brain, while pancreatic polypeptide slows digestion which may reduce food intake, both encouraging weight loss. “Almonds are high in protein, fibre, and unsaturated fatty acids, which may contribute to their satiating properties and help explain why fewer kilojoules were consumed.” The findings of this study show that eating almonds produce small changes to people's energy intake, Dr Carter says this may have clinical effects in the long term. Probiotics help maintain a healthy microbiome when taken with antibiotics Texas Christian University, November 18 2022.  A systematic review published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology helps answer the question concerning whether probiotics should be taken along with antibiotics to support gut health.  Although probiotics decrease the adverse gastrointestinal effects caused by antibiotics, their ability to preserve intestinal microbial composition that is negatively impacted by antibiotic therapy is not well understood.  “Like in a human community, we need people that have different professions because we don't all know how to do every single job,” she explained. “And so, the same happens with bacteria. We need lots of different gut bacteria that know how to do different things.” While it is well known that antibiotics destroy some beneficial intestinal microorganisms, some healthcare professionals have expressed a concern that administering probiotics to antibiotic-treated patients could further alter the established gut microbe balance. The review included 29 studies published during a 7-year period. The authors concluded that consuming probiotics with antibiotics can prevent or reduce some changes caused by antibiotics to the microbiome. “When participants take antibiotics, we see several consistent changes in some bacterial species,” Dr Marroquin observed. “But when treatment was combined with probiotics, the majority of those changes were less pronounced and some changes were completely prevented.” New study shows repeated stress accelerates aging of the eye University of California, Irvine, November 21, 2022 New research from the University of California, Irvine, suggests aging is an important component of retinal ganglion cell death in glaucoma, and that novel pathways can be targeted when designing new treatments for glaucoma patients. The study was published today in Aging Cell. Along with her colleagues, Dorota Skowronska‐Krawczyk, Ph.D., at the UCI School of Medicine, describes the transcriptional and epigenetic changes happening in aging retina.  The team shows how stress, such as intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation in the eye, causes retinal tissue to undergo epigenetic and transcriptional changes similar to natural aging. And, how in young retinal tissue, repetitive stress induces features of accelerated aging including the accelerated epigenetic age. Aging is a universal process that affects all cells in an organism. In the eye, it is a major risk factor for a group of neuropathies called glaucoma. Because of the increase in aging populations worldwide, current estimates show that the number of people with glaucoma (aged 40-80) will increase to over 110 million in 2040. In humans, IOP has a circadian rhythm. In healthy individuals, it oscillates typically in the 12-21 mmHg range and tends to be highest in approximately two thirds of individuals during the nocturnal period. Due to IOP fluctuations, a single IOP measurement is often insufficient to characterize the real pathology and risk of disease progression in glaucoma patients.  Long-term IOP fluctuation has been reported to be a strong predictor for glaucoma progression. This new study suggests that the cumulative impact of the fluctuations of IOP is directly responsible for the aging of the tissue. Researchers now have a new tool to estimate the impact of stress and treatment on the aging status of retinal tissue, which has made these new discoveries possible. In collaboration with the Clock Foundation and Steve Horvath, Ph.D., from Altos Labs, who pioneered the development of epigenetic clocks that can measure age based on methylation changes in the DNA of tissues, it was possible for researchers to show that repetitive, mild IOP elevation can accelerate epigenetic age of the tissues. What do people experience at the border between life and death? University of London & New York University, November 20, 2022 A new study on near-death experiences featured 567 men and women whose hearts stopped while hospitalized in the United States and the United Kingdom. Out of 28 survivors of cardiac arrest interviewed as part of the study, 11 recalled memories suggesting consciousness while undergoing CPR.  Additional cardiac arrest survivors provided self-reports about what they experienced while their hearts stopped. Reports included perceiving separating from their bodies and meaningful examinations of their lives.  Researchers discovered spikes of brain activity up to an hour into CPR.  Dr. Parnia, who served as lead investigator of the study, explained that he and the other researchers undertook this research in an attempt to scientifically explore something that health professionals have discussed anecdotally for decades: The similar stories people revived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) often tell about the time when their hearts stopped. “For decades now, millions of people who've gone through this have reported having lucid heightened consciousness, even though from the perspective of their doctors they were not conscious and they were in death,” Dr. Parnia told MNT. The study centered around 567 men and women who received CPR after their hearts stopped beating while at one of 25 participating hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom.  When health practitioners began CPR on a patient whose heart stopped, researchers rushed to the scene, bringing along a portable electroencephalogram, or EEG, to monitor electrical activity in different parts of the brain, and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure oxygen saturation of superficial brain cortex regions. Taking care not to get in the way of health practitioners performing CPR, researchers also clamped a tablet computer above the patient's head. The tablet was connected to Bluetooth headphones which were placed on the patient's ears. Of 567 subjects, 213 or about 38% experienced sustained return of spontaneous circulation, meaning their pulse was restored for 20 minutes or longer. Only 53, or fewer than 10% of the participants, lived to be discharged from the hospital. Of those 53, 25 were unable to be interviewed by researchers due to poor health. The remaining 28 participants were interviewed 2 to 4 weeks after cardiac arrest depending on their recovery.  Of the 28 participants interviewed, 11 — or 39% — reported having memories during cardiac arrest. Two of the 28 participants could hear the medical staff working while receiving CPR. One participant recalled seeing the medical staff working and could feel someone rubbing his chest.  Using the near-death scale, six participants had transcendent experiences. Three participants reported dream-like experiences, which included a singing fisherman.  Six of the 28 participants interviewed remembered the experience of dying. These recollections included one person who heard a deceased grandmother telling her to return to her body.  “We characterize the testimonies that people had and were able to identify that there is a unique recalled experience of death that is different to other experiences that people may have in the hospital or elsewhere,” Dr. Parnia said, “and that these are not hallucinations, they are not illusions, they are not delusions, they are real experiences that emerge when you die.” Fifty-three participants had interpretable EEG data. Researchers discovered spikes of brain activity, including so-called gamma, delta, theta, alpha, and beta waves emerging up to 60 minutes into CPR. Some of these brain waves normally occur when people are conscious and performing functions like memory retrieval and thinking. According to the researchers, this is the first time such biomarkers of consciousness have been identified during CPR for cardiac arrest.  “We found the brain electrical markers of heightened […] lucid consciousness, the same markers as you get in people who are having memory retrievals who are having […] high order cognitive processes, except that this was occurring when the brain had shut down. Research suggests agmatine can boost brain health and uplift your mood naturally Yonsei University College of Medicine (S Korea), October 28, 2022. Athletes and bodybuilders are always eager to learn more about new products that can help enhance their workouts by promoting strength and stamina. Agmatine, a natural compound, is often used by health enthusiasts as a pre-workout supplement. According to research, agmatine can also potentially be used to boost brain health and improve mood. In one scientific review, researchers suggest that the compound can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases and assist in the recovery of brain injury patients. Agmatine or 4-aminobutyl-guanidine is produced in your body from arginine, an amino acid found in foods like chickpeas, lentils, pork and poultry. When used as a pre-workout supplement, experts recommend not taking it with protein since dietary protein can slow the absorption of agmatine. This then diminishes its benefits. Agmatine is often listed on supplement labels as agmatine sulfate. Dosages range between 250 mg to 1,000 mg per scoop, with intake recommendations between one to two grams per day. Agmatine has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and can scavenge harmful free radicals that cause oxidative damage to your organs and tissues. Some people believe agmatine can help enhance workouts by increasing levels of beneficial nitric oxide. This then dilates blood vessels and promotes healthy circulation. Data also suggests that agmatine may help activate the release of pain-killing, mood-lifting endorphins, which can boost motivation and mood. This suggests taking agmatine can help make you feel more inclined to exercise. The compound may also help block aged glycation end products. Your body produces these potentially carcinogenic compounds after you eat charcoal-broiled or well-done meats. Agmatine may also help down-regulate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are tissue-degrading enzymes that can facilitate the spread of malignant tumors.  Studies show that agmatine works against the glutamate receptors that affect pain perception. Data from preliminary studies have supported agmatine's ability to reduce pain and strengthen the pain-killing effects of prescription opioids. Experts hope that agmatine can be used to help reduce the amount of medications needed and decrease the possibility of addiction to opioids. Supplementation with agmatine may help activate serotonin, the “feel good” chemical in your body while also decreasing levels of cortisol, the “stress” hormone that builds up when you are under duress. In a review published in the European Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, scientists suggest that agmatine has antidepressant effects. According to a 2018 study published in the journal Human and Experimental Toxicology, agmatine can help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation caused by laboratory-induced Parkinson's. Prenatal phthalate exposure can significantly impact infant behavior and cognition, says study University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, November 16, 2022 Prenatal exposure to phthalates, a set of chemicals commonly found in plastics and personal care products, has been shown to significantly impact aspects of behavior and cognition in infants, according to a team of researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “Phthalates are widespread, and several well-known studies have reported that 100% of pregnant individuals had detectable levels of phthalates in their bodies,” said developmental neurotoxicologist Jenna Sprowles, a former postdoctoral research associate at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Children's toys, cosmetics, and constructional materials are all potential sources of phthalate exposure, as are other materials made from polyvinyl chloride. When individuals who are pregnant are exposed to phthalates, the chemical compound crosses the placental barrier to interact directly with the fetus. Phthalates can also be transferred to a newborn through breast milk. Their study, reported in the journal Neurotoxicology and Teratology, investigated the neurobehavioral impacts of prenatal phthalate exposure in infants aged 4.5 and 7.5 months. Since many existing studies focus on individuals in early and middle childhood, providing attention to this age group is especially important. “Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals, meaning they interact with and alter how hormones typically act in the body. Hormones play crucial roles in brain development, so when the activities of hormones are altered by chemicals like phthalates, adverse functional effects are possible,” Sprowles said. “While we do know that different phthalates can affect different hormone systems, we don't yet know exactly how particular phthalates exert their specific effects.” The researchers found that the impact of prenatal phthalate exposure was specific to each phthalate's particular properties. For example, higher prenatal concentrations of a phthalate called MEP, which is commonly found in personal care products, were associated with lower ASQ scores (indicating below-average development) in certain domains. Their results align with existing studies, some of which have been carried out in animal models, which indicate that both prenatal and neonatal exposure to phthalates alters neural structure and function, resulting in impaired cognition and altered behavior.

Determining therapeutic psilocybin dosages for maximum therapeutic potential is an essential part of intentional psychedelic use and psychedelic assisted therapy. This episode identifies the thresholds of psilocybin that produce altered states of consciousness and result in real, tangible shifts.  Hosts Nicholas Levich and Jimmy Nguyen start by clarifying that dosage is correlated to intention, set, and setting–there is no one-size-fits-all all dosage when it comes to magic mushrooms. They discuss the process of how to find the minimum viable dose that gets you to the journey threshold. From there, the hosts talk about why some people experience ego death at 2 grams and other people are unable to reach the journey threshold of 10+ grams. This ultimately highlights the most significant factor impacting dosage, which is unrelated to body weight or gender. The episode also covers what the Johns Hopkins research discovered in terms of the optimal psilocybin dosage.
