We need to talk about an emerging reality that virtually all of my clients are telling me is their number one challenge right now. Everyone is already dealing with multiple threats to federal funding. But now there's the additional reality that all the chaos and uncertainty at the federal level – from budget craziness to wildly fluctuating tariff policies – is destabilizing other funding sources. State and local government funding, foundation grants and corporate funding are all affected. As nonprofit leaders we're fighting for our federal funding, and now we're realizing that many of our other funding sources are facing headwinds as well. This has some very specific implications for our advocacy strategy. We need a way to get all of our funding decisionmakers to commit to continuing their full support for our work. And we have to deal with all of that at once.In this episode, we share:The number one strategic imperative in the fight for your federal funding in particularWhat's on all funding decisionmakers' minds right now, and why we need to shift their perspectiveThe two perspective shifts we must get decisionmakers to makeWhy your usual approach to messaging is unlikely to get the job doneThe three-part messaging equation that will help you succeed with every type of funderI'm preparing to launch a group coaching program that will focus specifically on helping you craft messaging that will shift decisionmakers' perspectives and get them on board with sustaining and even expanding your funding. This will be a coaching opportunity for a limited number of people to come in and be part of a group. There'll be some training, but most of it will be coaching and helping you to get your messaging dialed in so that you can address this pressing need. What I'm seeing right now is there's nothing more important than this. If that sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, message me through the podcast website or on LinkedIn. I look forward to hearing from you!

And then what we end up with is a word or a phrase that doesn't actually really mean anything.” – Jonathan Hicken [02:26]“The hardest thing to do, and I've tried, is to get AI to capture your voice. That is really hard.” – Eric Ressler [13:14]“I mean, the seminal example of a vision statement is Dr. Martin Luther King's ‘I Have a Dream' speech.” – Jonathan Hicken [10:19]“Can you imagine a world where young children are not scared of climate change but motivated to actually participate in the solution?” – Eric Ressler [29:38]Listeners, now you can text us your comments or questions by clicking this link.*** If you liked this episode, please help spread the word. "There have been literally thousands of years of breeding and living with animals to optimise these kinds of problems. But because we're just so early on with alternative proteins and there's so much white space, it's actually just really exciting to know that we can keep on innovating and being far more efficient than this existing technology — which, fundamentally, is just quite inefficient. You're feeding animals a bunch of food to then extract a small fraction of their biomass to then eat that.Animal agriculture takes up 83% of farmland, but produces just 18% of food calories. So the current system just is so wasteful. And the limiting factor is that you're just growing a bunch of food to then feed a third of the world's crops directly to animals, where the vast majority of those calories going in are lost to animals existing." — Seren KellLinks to learn more, summary and full transcript. In today's episode, host Luisa Rodriguez interviews Seren Kell — Senior Science and Technology Manager at the Good Food Institute Europe — about making alternative proteins as tasty, cheap, and convenient as traditional meat, dairy, and egg products. They cover:The basic case for alternative proteins, and why they're so hard to makeWhy fermentation is a surprisingly promising technology for creating delicious alternative proteins The main scientific challenges that need to be solved to make fermentation even more usefulThe progress that's been made on the cultivated meat front, and what it will take to make cultivated meat affordableHow GFI Europe is helping with some of these challengesHow people can use their careers to contribute to replacing factory farming with alternative proteinsThe best part of Seren's jobPlenty moreProducer and editor: Keiran HarrisAudio Engineering Lead: Ben CordellTechnical editing: Dominic Armstrong and Milo McGuireAdditional content editing: Luisa Rodriguez and Katy MooreTranscriptions: Katy Moore

We sat down with Brooke Deason. Brooke is absolutely living the dream - she's followed career opportunities that took her from a small country town to Spain where she currently lives and works in the pharmaceuticals industry. Not only does Brooke have a successful career, she also knows how to live life to the fullest. She doesn't let society's ideas of what a 35year old woman should be doing dictate her choices, she lives life on her own terms. We chat to Brooke about:How she has gone against society's ‘typical' scripts and why she wouldn't live life any other wayWhat is unconscious bias and how might it be unexpectedly influencing the choices you makeWhy it's completely okay to not want kids and why shouldn't be a taboo subject Why we all need to stop and ask ourselves who we are living our lives for“At the end of the day I didn't want to wake up when I was 70 and be thinking, I could have lived in Spain, I could have been learning a different language, I could have been seeing things that don't exist in our country and experiencing all these weird and wonderful things” - Brooke DeasonIf you want to learn more about unconscious bias you can check out this article. If you want to connect with Brooke you can find her on LinkedInWant to continue the conversation?
