What are the advantages of digitising your asset management? What impact can a digitised system have on councils and their communities? These were the topics on discussion on this week's Highways News podcast in association with Brightly.Subscribe to Highways Voices free on Apple Podcasts,Spotify,Amazon Music,Google PodcastsorPocket Castsand never miss an episode! The company's campaign-Assets. United, is a joined-up approach to asset management from Brightly, which gives its users – UK councils – a holistic view of all assets within their jurisdiction, irrespective of asset class, so they can make smarter decisions. The initiative uncovers synergies between assets while putting the systems' users in control of the actions they need to take.We take a deeper dive with Nick Vague, Senior Solutions Consultant at Brightly and Brightly customer Chris Faires, Digital and Technology Manager for Highways and Environment at Hertfordshire County Council.Speaking on the podcast, Mr Faires said: “Our approach has been to develop a very mature Asset Management operating model, and we've been doing this for the best part of two decades. What we've done is draw on global expertise to create a risk-based view, which gives us a much better understanding of all of our assets both on and under the ground in one system.”Brightly's system has helped the shift to greater digitisation in asset management, which is opening doors for councils to overcome the challenges they face. By leveraging digital tools, such as Brightly Software, they can use smart asset data to help interrogate current operations, inform and defend financial decisions, and realise widespread cost-efficiencies that make budgets work harder for the council and benefit the community. You'll also hear some of the latest news from the Highways News website and our podcast partners, and why Costain wins "Adrian's Accolade" this week.Next week we begin the countdown to Highways UK, as we look forward to the event, ahead of a series of podcasts brought to you from the NEC at the UK's biggest and best highways and transport show… our podcasts sponsored by AGD/Traffic Group Signals, Q Point, Westcotec, SRL and SWARCO.

"There have been literally thousands of years of breeding and living with animals to optimise these kinds of problems. But because we're just so early on with alternative proteins and there's so much white space, it's actually just really exciting to know that we can keep on innovating and being far more efficient than this existing technology — which, fundamentally, is just quite inefficient. You're feeding animals a bunch of food to then extract a small fraction of their biomass to then eat that.Animal agriculture takes up 83% of farmland, but produces just 18% of food calories. So the current system just is so wasteful. And the limiting factor is that you're just growing a bunch of food to then feed a third of the world's crops directly to animals, where the vast majority of those calories going in are lost to animals existing." — Seren KellLinks to learn more, summary and full transcript. In today's episode, host Luisa Rodriguez interviews Seren Kell — Senior Science and Technology Manager at the Good Food Institute Europe — about making alternative proteins as tasty, cheap, and convenient as traditional meat, dairy, and egg products. They cover:The basic case for alternative proteins, and why they're so hard to makeWhy fermentation is a surprisingly promising technology for creating delicious alternative proteins The main scientific challenges that need to be solved to make fermentation even more usefulThe progress that's been made on the cultivated meat front, and what it will take to make cultivated meat affordableHow GFI Europe is helping with some of these challengesHow people can use their careers to contribute to replacing factory farming with alternative proteinsThe best part of Seren's jobPlenty moreProducer and editor: Keiran HarrisAudio Engineering Lead: Ben CordellTechnical editing: Dominic Armstrong and Milo McGuireAdditional content editing: Luisa Rodriguez and Katy MooreTranscriptions: Katy Moore

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has competitively awarded a total of $61 million dollars to 10 comprehensive large-scale projects through its Connected Communities initiative to help accelerate decarbonization of buildings and the electric grid.Connected communities of grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) employ energy efficient end uses, distributed energy resources (DERs), coordinated controls and smart technologies (e.g., smart thermostats, smart water heaters, batteries) to interact with the electric grid and coordinate load flexibility to support the grid with emerging issues related to the growth of renewable energy generation. The awardee project teams include a cross-section of buildings industry stakeholders including utilities, local governments, aggregators, technology firms, home-builders and end-users. These demonstration projects are intended to demonstrate the capabilities of GEBs across an expanded range of technologies, locations, and building types than have been implemented to date, and to provide new information that will empower utilities, aggregators, technology providers, and others to scale grid flexibility and decarbonization of buildings. The projects address a range of aspects critical for scaling, including: customer engagement and retention with a focus on LMI, occupant engagement, technology interoperability, rate design, utility business models, regulatory considerations, and valuing integrated DERs and GEBs.Join us for a lively interview with Dr. Brian Walker, Technology Manager at the U.S. DOE's Building Technologies Office. In this episode we talk about virtual reality in courts and how it can promote access to justice. Having to go to court can be once in a lifetime experience for quite many people. It might be nerve-racking and even scary not knowing what is going to happen at court, especially for self represented litigants. A lot of courts might not even see this problem because for courts and people who work there, it's everyday life. Besides financial resources, not being familiar with the court processes might affect people to seek resolution to their cases just because the whole concept is so hard to understand. We meet with Dan Jackson, Molly French and Shikha Silliman Bhattacharjee who have created The Colorado Virtual Courthouse, a guided 360-degree virtual tour of a Colorado courthouse, designed to help Self Represented Litigants navigate court and improve access to justice. It introduces key court staff, explains common court procedures, and provides resources and information to promote better legal outcomes for self represented litigants. Tune in to hear how courts could make the real experience of visiting the court more familiar and less daunting. Dan Jackson has directed the NuLawLab at Northeastern University School of Law since 2013. Dan is a 1997 graduate of Northeastern Law and a 1990 graduate of Northwestern University. Following a postgraduate clerkship with The Hon. Hugh H. Bownes at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, Dan worked for 13 years with the law firm of Bingham McCutchen, ultimately serving as the firm's director of attorney development after practicing in the employment law group. Molly French currently works as Technology Manager at Colorado Legal Services in Denver, CO. She is on the advisory board of the Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project, and has served as the Chair of the Colorado Access to Justice Commission's Technology Committee, and is currently serving as a member of the Communications and Technology Committees. Shikha Silliman Bhattacharjee jointly founded HELM Social Design Studio in 2015, the first social design studio in South Asia dedicated to partnering with human rights defenders and their organizations to ideate, fund and build social design solutions that promote human rights and access to justice (http://helmstudio.org/).

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of Inside The Inspired, a podcast about people that create opportunity for themselves. I'm your host, Jonathan Cohen. This episode features Erica Zendell, a technology manager on sabbatical traveling across the country training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while writing her book and memoir, Zen in the Art of Fighting. In this episode, we talked about how the pandemic prompted her introspection into what mattered most to her, milestones versus goals, and plotting out life data points. Erica has worked as a product manager for brands such as Wayfair, SAP Hybris, and a program manager for Asics Digital. Erica holds an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management and a Bachelor's in Comparative Literature from Princeton. Lastly, on this Sabbatical Erica was recently promoted to the rank of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt! Erica has been featured on multiple podcasts and writes a newsletter you can subscribe to here: https://erica-zendell.ck.page/92bf8b841f You can also follow Erica through her blog & Instagram: @zenintheartoffighting. Please join me in welcoming my guest, Erica Zendell! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This weekend I've accepted the David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge. I'll be running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hrs in honor of my grandmother, Ziva Cohen. Pushing beyond the limits of what we believe is possible for ourselves to see who we come out as the other side. I'll be running an additional two miles for a total of 50 miles in 48 hours. I'm raising money for the Cure Alzheimer's Thru Research Fund and donating $100 following each of the runs. I lost both my grandmothers to this disease. "Your reasons to continue must be greater than your reasons to stop." This isn't a fitness test. This is about resilience - something both my grandmothers demonstrated profoundly. I know that when it comes to resilience, the memories of my grandmothers serve as my inspiration. To endure, give back, and honor the lives of the people that impact us most, in my opinion, is the strongest blessing I have to offer. In everything bad there is something good. I'm hoping that through this challenge, we can raise money for a cause bigger than ourselves and support research towards eliminating this disease once and for all. If you're interested in donating, you can check out our GoFundMe page linked here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/4x4x48-challenge-in-memory-of-ziva-cohen Thank you all for time, donations, and attention! Boards or panels made from magnesium oxide (MgO) are showing up on projects across the country to act as a subfloor, sheathing, wall board, or underlayment material. In the process, they are bringing enhanced fire resistance and acoustical performance to many building types, most notably multifamily projects. Today we are talking to Kate Andrews Land, General Manager, EXA COR MgO Products, and Ben Richardson, the Technology Manager for EXACOR™ MgO products at Huber Engineered Woods. By the end of this podcast you should be able to: Learning Objectives: Identify the physical characteristics of magnesium oxide (MgO) panels in terms of their makeup and basic performance attributes for use in floor and wall assemblies in multifamily projects.
