Hello and Welcome to the "You Dont Look" Podcast Episode #18--this week I will be sharing Part II of my Hypothyroidism journey from the mid-part of the bell curve to “flat line”, which is essentially how I stay in the mid part of the bell curve of health and wellness. Once my wholistic practitioner Dr. Rashmi Gulati put me on a dose (that was right for me) of Compound Thyroid we then developed a supplement regimen to help my body heal. That regimen included (and still does actually) digestive enzymes, probiotics, two types of magnesium to help with muscle relaxation and gut peristalsis, omega 3 oil, and an the amino acid L-theanine (which is one type of adaptogen). I then dialed in my diet using the Auto-immune Protocol (AIP). Dr. Dr.Sarah Ballantyne is an excellent resource to learn more about this paleo based elimination diet strategy, which focuses on nutrient dense whole foods while cutting out processed foods, e.g., dairy and white sugar. AIP also focuses on stress management, sleep and staying active. Listen as I share my morning routine and how I survived cutting out coffee and chocolate during the elimination phase of AIP. One secret: is a wicked tasty coffee alternative named “Teecino”;trust me on this one. Another great resource for those of you on the journey to healing from hypothyroidism is like Marni Wasserman over at https://ultimatehealthpodcast.com/. Hello and Welcome to the "You Dont Look" Podcast Episode #16--this week we will be talking about hypothyroidism. It was World Hypothyroidism Day on 5/25/20. Did you know that: 20 Million women in the US have an underactive thyroid and that 60% of them are unaware of it? Women are 5 to 8 times more likely to develop hypothyroidism than men 1 in 8 women will have a thyroid issue at some during their lifetime I am one of those 8 women. This episode is part one of my story from fatigue to feeling great. These days I work a full time desk job, run my own paddleboard yoga/ecotour business and am a fitness trainer to three clients. I mention this because it feels great to be able to what I want when I want. But my energy came to a screeching halt in 2007. Within the span of 6 mos in 2007 into 2008, I had endured the sudden passing of my Father, a major car accident and an emergency surgery due to a freak occurrence in my right lung. I spent the end of 2007, all of 2008 and into 2009 with debilitating fatigue, brain fog and issues with digestion and elimination. Oh yeah and no period for 3 consecutive months. My OBGYN thought to test for hypothyroidism. Listen to this episode to find out more about hypothyroidism, to learn what the thyroid does, what are T4 and T3, what can cause your thyroid to underperform and how I began my way back to feeling more like me through finding an amazing wholistic practitioner, Dr. Rashmi Gulati. She is the Chief MD at https://www.patientsmedical.com/in NYC, and discovering others, like Marni Wasserman over at https://ultimatehealthpodcast.com/who also had underactive thyroid and was now also working on healing her body from this disease. We all have our own stories and mindsets about what healthy eating looks like.   Sometimes we can become really dogmatic about it, especially when it comes to defining yourself as a 'diet'.   "I'm Keto" "I'm Vegetarian" "I'm Paleo"   Having this mindset can really restrict you to the point where you're not able to listen to your inner voice — the one that might be contradicting your strictly defined diet. Sometimes when it comes to supporting your body, you have to throw the dogma out the window and zone in on what makes your body feel good.   Our guest today Marni Wasserman, has been there herself and in this episode she's sharing all about her transition from vegetarian to omnivore. Marni was a plant-based nutritionist for many years until she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, and slowly began to re-introduce animal based protein back into her diet.    Marni doesn't hesitate to speak openly about her experience transitioning away from a vegetarian diet as well as sharing her deep knowledge in regards to nutrition and health.   ● Marni Wasserman’s background in fitness and nutrition. ● Realizing that a vegetarian diet was not working for her anymore. ● Physical, mental and emotional signs. ● Finding out she had Hashimotos. ● The right blood tests to check your thyroid function. ● What is AIP? ● Marni’s biggest learning on a personal fundamental level. ● Other changes that contributed to Marni’s healing process. ● Supplements that worked great for Marni. ● Honoring your body and the processes it goes through. ● Your health comes first! ● Easiest ways to begin your transition. ● Starting your day the right way! ● Find what resonates with you. Hoping this episode helps you to show up for yourself and learn how to start paying attention to your body’s messages to achieve your best health. Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do! In this exciting episode, we are talking with Marni Wasserman. There is so much importance of self care and forgiveness in our health and wellness journeys. Now on to the show! Highlights 05:20 So it started slowly, organically. We put out a show a week and we just kinda kept going and we did a couple shows ourselves, we interviewed some guests, we started to kind of get a feel for what our audience was looking for. It took us about 50 episodes to get our first sponsor and then slowly we started to realize this is becoming a business. 06:14 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and the way I was eating and living wasn't conducive to my wellbeing anymore and I drastically changed everything. I went from being vegetarian to eating more of a Paleo and animal based diet, of course with lots of good fats and lots of veggies still, but I, I really turn things around so I could no longer teach that in my cooking classes. 08:21 For me it was just this organic unraveling of love and wanting to learn everything I could about food and teaching. So it's, it's kind of funny that, you know, seven years or whatever it was into my career teaching and educating about health, I had this little wake up call that was showing me that the path I was on wasn't necessarily the right one for me at the time. 15:31 But it took about, I'd say six months to a year before Jesse, my husband and I decided to work with a functional medicine team to go a bit deeper, to get some gut testing done, to go on different protocols to find out what's at the root cause, what's going on in my body, in my blood, in my urine with my hormones, all that stuff to see what's at the core of this or where can we start to clean up shop from the inside out. 21:44 Everyone can eat more vegetables. And it always starts there. And I know it always sounds Cliche, you know, I feel like nutrition 10 years ago saying, eat your veggies. But it's so foundational because so many people can raise their hands in a room and say they are not even having a serving a day. 27:16 Whether it's just raw veggies cut up or whether it's a couple of soups done or a dip or a couple of prepared meats or proteins that are ready to go. You don't have to put everything together. You can just have different components and then every night of the week you can even build each one. It's just something different. How do you deal with Hashimoto’s? Today, I interview my dear friend, nutritionist and chef, Marni Wasserman, who shares her health journey of transitioning from vegetarian to paleo and the strategies and self-care practices that she implements in healing and dealing with Hashimoto’s. Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Mari’s journey as she transitioned from a vegetarian diet to a paleo diet and introducing animal proteins What grain-free eating looks like Marni’s journey with Hashimoto’s and what that has been like Tips and strategies to really support autoimmunity and the importance of self-care Coffee alternatives that you need to know about Our four-week Healing & Dealing with Hashi’s program Mari’s typical daily diet Key Takeaways: When transitioning from one form of diet to another, it’s really important that you listen to your body and tune in to your brain about what foods to add and what foods to take out. Most thyroid conditions are actually Hashimoto’s, which means there are a lot of efforts in place to help people along. And there are a lot of modalities that you can build into your day to help with that. Adaptogens play a big part in the healing of Hashimoto’s. They also help with stress and boost the immune system. Action Steps: Work with a team of practitioners who can help you look at Hashimoto’s from a functional medicine perspective and help direct you towards a solution. If you do get diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, make sure to get support from friends and family, and your community. Go on a grain-free diet and test the waters of the AIP or the autoimmune protocol for at least a month. Build self-care practices like detoxifying your body and your home, going to bed on time and hydrating and flushing your system constantly with lots of water and teas, and bringing in some adaptogens into your diet.   Marni Wasserman: “Once you find out that you are diagnosed [with Hashimoto’s], I think knowing that there is a lot of information out there should be really encouraging. There’s a lot of books, there’s a lot of podcasts, there’s a lot of resources and experts.” “What we’re so committed to is to bring people through a journey of healing that they can start learning and taking control of their own health… and it’s about simplifying things and just finding the right things to take into consideration.” Thanks for listening! Have you ever wondered what it takes to create, launch, and maintain a hit podcast? As a listener, it appears as though a couple of people set up some microphones, have a chat, and by that process, an episode is effortlessly created. I remember starting my show, thinking “ I know how to find and talk to interesting people. I’ll buy some recording gear, send out a few guest request emails, and I’ll be a podcaster”. Little did I know that creating a show, and putting it out consistently requires a seemingly endless series of tasks, many of which can be extremely time-consuming, not to mention expensive. In this episode, we take a slight departure from our usual format and present a behind the scenes look into the whole process of creating and hosting a podcast. Our guests Jesse Chappus and Marni Wasserman are the creators of one of the top health podcasts in the world- The Ultimate Health Podcast. After only three years in the game, they have turned their passion into a thriving business that has become not only rewarding to them personally but also financially. What makes their story genuinely inspiring though, is that neither of them had any experience in media or broadcasting before launching their show. It’s also worth noting that they are not only co-hosts of the podcast, but also a happily married couple. Jesse and Marni take us along with them through the history of their health and healing journeys, as well as precisely how they continue to grow their audience and strengthen their relationship and financial independence at the same time. If you are a fan of podcasts or have ever dreamed of starting your own, this is the show for you. Having my podcast has been a dream come true, but it has not been without struggle. Along with Jesse and Marni, I reveal in this episode the rewards and challenges we've experienced, and precisely what to expect if you someday take to the mic and create your own show. As rewarding as it is, it's not for the faint of heart. As of today my show has been downloaded 959,314 times. My goal is to reach 1M downloads by New Years Eve 2017. Would you be willing to help?
