Do you want to reduce inflammation, improve your overall health, and feel amazing? What if I told you there's a solution that can help you achieve these results? In this episode, Dr. Wendie Trubow and Dr. Gail Clayton delved into the significance of the autoimmune paleo (AIP) diet in combating inflammation and enhancing overall health. Let's dive into the game-changing benefits of the Autoimmune Paleo Diet and how it can transform your well-being. Get ready to discover a whole new way of living that leaves you feeling vibrant and healthy. It's time to unlock the power of a nourishing diet to empower your body and mind. Listen now and start your journey against inflammation and autoimmune diseases today!   Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/fivejourneyspodcast/  Episode Notes Dr. Clayton emphasized the need for removing specific foods known to contribute to inflammation and highlighted the benefits of following the AIP protocol for at least three to four weeks to support the body's healing process. Dr. Clayton also stressed the importance of addressing stress and emotional well-being, shedding light on comprehensive approaches to improving your overall health. This episode provides a wealth of information on the importance of an anti-inflammatory diet, the impact of mold toxins on the body, and the interconnectedness of the immune system, gut health, and stress response. Discover the benefits of the Autoimmune Paleo Diet  The autoimmune paleo (AIP) diet is specifically designed to reduce inflammation in the body and improve overall health by eliminating pro-inflammatory foods. Following the AIP protocol for a minimum of three to four weeks allows the body to heal and reduces inflammation significantly. This diet has shown promising results in individuals with autoimmune diseases seeking to improve their health through dietary changes. Avoid anti-inflammatory foods  Certain foods, such as wheat, corn, soy, dairy, eggs, shellfish, and nightshades, are known to contribute to inflammation and should be avoided in an anti-inflammatory diet like AIP. Nourishing herbs and gut-recovery protocols can aid in repairing the gut lining and addressing bacterial overgrowth. Removing these inflammatory foods and incorporating healing herbs can significantly reduce inflammation and improve overall health. Learn effective strategies for overall health  Stress management and emotional well-being play a crucial role in promoting overall health and reducing inflammation. Incorporating stress-reducing techniques like brain retraining and relaxation practices can help lower cortisol levels and support immune system recovery. By optimizing structural, chemical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of your life, you can live a vibrant and healthy life. Is the autoimmune paleo diet for everyone? While I won't be talking about diets and food all the time on this podcast, today I wanted to share my experience with the autoimmune paleo diet as well as my experience with other diets and what I've read, learned and experienced with some of the different autoimmune diets that are out there. If you are confused about what diet to follow for your autoimmune condition and if you would like to possibly shorten the time it will take you to figure out what eating plan or diet will work for you then listen to this episode.  I've found that many people health coaches, nutritionists, and functional medicine doctors are praising the autoimmune paelo diet as the end all be all for autoimmune healing, but I've found that isn't always the case. Hey friend Welcome back to sweat and yoga’s love the skin you’re in podcast Where we sweat for a workout and yoga to feel something new. Suncana Sonnenburg here - your host, lover of sweat and all the feels, sitcom junkie, hoop earring enthusiast and your realistic health and fitness bestie. Health and fitness has been hijacked by the entertainment and media industry and we’re here to take it back so we can all love the skin we’re in and learn to listen to our bodies. My apologies for the pod being a little late today - it’s been a long day so I need to make sure I secure the right recording time w minimal amount of noise. Today’s episode is part 2 to the intermittent fasting episode - as I mentioned I decided break it up into 2 parts instead of one lengthy epi - The main argument for intermittent fasting is that it gives your body a break for 16 hours {or however long you choose to fast for} and while yes a break can be good - a break under stressful circumstances isn’t great and that is what IF can be to our bodies - an unnecessary stressor - I covered all of this in part 1 of the episode so make sure you check that out. To minimize the stress but still give the body a break I personally suggest the Autoimmune paleo diet. I know there’s a lot of conflicting info out there about kind of “diets” {and I say diets in quotation marks because while diet used to be considered a style of eating now it is synonymous w food restriction which I am not a huge fan of that}…. Anyway what kind of diets you should be following to get x y z results so I thought I would explain WHY i personally believe an AIP diet is a great starting point and what tweaks I actually suggest on that diet. As usual this isn’t medical advice - the whole goal of this podcast is to guide you to listening to your body over all the other info out there and to become an advocate for your own health - to try things out and decide if they work for your body in particular. If you want to skip the gratitude I do at the beginning of every episode and just jump right into why start w the autoimmune paleo diet head to minute 9:30 of the pod. If you want to skip to the modifications I would make to your AIP diet head to 11:30 of the pod. Lastly if you have been doing the AIP diet and aren’t sure where to go from here head to 14:15 of the pod. Hope you love the episode friend! In today’s episode, Yovani Gonzalez shares his IBD journey from rapid onset and diagnosis to turning down surgery and finding the right balance of medication, diet, and lifestyle changes to take back his health. Before Yovani’s diagnosis, he was an active 26 year old working 12-hour shifts, hitting the gym hard, and enjoying everything in life–including great food and watching the game with a beer. But when he had his first sudden flare up and immediate Crohn’s diagnosis, his life turned upside down. Steroids helped with the initial inflammation and then he started Remicade treatments. But his mindset was one of “let’s take a drug to fix this and go on with my life.” Young and stubborn, as he described himself, he wasn’t ready to make any lifestyle changes. But, Remicade eventually lost its effectiveness and he found himself back in the hospital. He switched medications to Entyvio and later to Humira. At the end of 2017 and beginning of 2018, Yovani faced his worst years yet. His weight dropped from around 170 lbs. to 138 lbs. and it was then that he decided he needed to do more than just take medications. Yovani took a look at all areas of his life and with the support of his friends, family, and girlfriend (now fiancé), he made some significant changes. He took a new role at work that was less stressful, he began changing his diet and workout routine, and sought the help of a holistic doctor. Yovani focused his workouts on endurance and started incorporating new activities, including yoga, which helped him slow down both physically and mentally. He focused on sleep and changed his priorities–allowing him to focus on his health. For his diet, he gave up beer (though he still has an occasional glass of wine or cocktail), learned what he tolerated and what he didn’t, and adopted the Autoimmune Paleo diet as his way of eating. Over the years, he’s kept his positive outlook and tends to look at new hurdles as challenges that he can take on and overcome. He adapts to what life throws his way, looks at problems from new angles, and is grateful for the support of his friends and family around him. One of the biggest life changes that Yovani and his girlfriend recently made was moving to Palm Springs. With long-term health as their focus, they wanted a quieter place that would allow them to be outdoors more with less traffic and stress. Throughout his journey, Yovani has always kept a focus on his roots–what drives him and what anchors him. His focus on remaining true to his roots, combined with a passion for clothing and fashion, led him to start Purple Roots Clothing just over a year ago. His line is focused on clothing for active lifestyles that raises awareness and supports a cause (Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation), while at the same time being approachable and wearable by anyone–not just those with IBD. She has spent the last six years of her clinical nutrition practice focusing on working with clients in Autoimmune Paleo, but has since moved on to more advanced functional medicine based gut restoration applications to remove restriction from her client's protocols and work with clients struggling with disordered eating with her program Transformational Eating.   In this episode we are investigating and discussing: - If you've ditched diet dogma and you are now profoundly anti-diet are you still following dogma? - Are you walking through your life seeking safety externally? - How to heal with love instead of fixing through restriction. - Our bodies are not built for perfection. - How to face the parts of you that are painful in your self love journey - When restrictive diets result in food fear. - Believing that life is not against you and finding the benefits and lessons in the challenges. - How to make room for the parts of yourself that are experiencing suffering and shame. - Self acceptance and neutrality, without judgement. - How to modulate the immune system when you are experiencing chronic illness - How can you learn to trust yourself and when it might be time to leave the current approach behind? - Implementing self forgiveness and loving compassion. - and so much more.   If you want to learn more about Jessica Flanigan: Check out her website Her book The Loving Diet The Institute of Spiritual Coaching Read her article The Silent Truth: AIP, Restrictive Diets, Disordered Eating and Orthorexia

In today's episode, we'll talk about healing diet and intuitive eating I'm a health care professional trained in using food as a way of healing the physical body. Healing diet, restrictive and elimination food protocol is what I studied for years yet today I very seldom recommend it. Why? I have seen and experienced too many situations that healing diets, restrictive and elimination food protocols actually caused more collateral damages than benefits. Furthermore, in most clinical cases what really was causing the health issue had nothing to do with food. So, why obsess about food? If I can, I'd like to take you back in 2015... Carole breaks down I was sitting in my clinic office talking to a patient seeking help with rheumatoid arthritis. She was in the middle of a major flare-up. All joints in her lower body were painfully swollen and she was in a 9/10 pain level. She wanted me to examine her AIP (auto-immune protocol) dietary protocol & supplement protocol and advise her on what she was doing wrong so she could get over the massive flare-up... she was desperately looking for me to find what she was doing wrong. I read all her testing reports, looked over her medications, supplement and food journals. She was doing everything perfectly... she was eating on point and has been for months. I couldn't find anything wrong with her diet or supplement or medication. Then while looking at her, a little voice in my head told me to ask her about her husband.... with hesitation I did. “How your is husband doing, Carole?” She crumbled on the seat in tears... and she cried for a solid 10 minutes barely taking a breath. Her husband had asked her for a divorce 4 weeks earlier. Her flare-up was triggered by the divorce NOT the food... when she finally was able to breathe and talk, the first thing that came out of her mouth was: “So Stephanie, what can I do with my diet to help myself through this situation?” “Carole, this is not about the food... you need help emotionally. This situation is very traumatic to you now and your body is flaring up because of it.” “No... I know it's what I'm doing with my food. It's always the food. I'm not trying hard enough.” “It's not about the food: It's about the relationship to healing.” - Jessica Flannigan, author of the Loving Diet Let's reflect on your journey with healing diets. Are you currently participating in healing your health using food or are you wanting to use food to support your health? If so, how do you answer these questions: What's my ‘why' for using food for my health? My secret WHY? Is it weight loss or healing? Is it healing so I can finally lose weight? Have I looked at my health situation from all angles 4 bodies: Mental, Emotional, Spiritual and last Physical. Do I really like this food? Am I forcing myself to eat food I do not enjoy because it's good for me? Do I have any feelings of guilt or diet mentality around this food choice? Did I allow my nutrition knowledge to guide this choice for my health without sacrificing pleasure? Am I putting pressure on myself to be a ‘perfect' healing diet participant? Is this choice coming from a place of self-care or self-control? These are the same questions I ask myself as a practitioner when assessing a client's ability to use food for healing their health. It will usually take 12-18 months of solid intuitive eating living before one is able to approach food with restriction without triggering the diet mindset. Another way to see this is that it takes 12-18 months for women to finally accept their body image as is so they can separate health from body image and no longer seek to heal their physical body so they can lose weight. In today's episode, we'll interview Jessica Flanigan, Clinical Nutritionist, Co-Founder of The Institute of Spiritual Coaching and is the author of the first mind-body book about Autoimmune Disease, The Loving Diet. What you'll learn listening to this episode: The article that Jessica wrote that sent the AIP community in shock The link between restrictive diet and disordered eating behaviors Orthorexia: What is it and how it's linked to AIP protocol The danger of self-diagnosis What you are likely missing in your protocol and why food alone isn't working.   Mentioned on the show: Grab your FREE guide to Intuitive Eating  Study on low FODMAP and disordered eating The silent truth about AIP, Restrictive Diet and Disordered Eating article     Connect with our Guest: Website Instagram Facebook

Autoimmune Paleo Diet and Hashimoto’s Disease

Functional Medicine Research with Dr. Nikolas Hedberg

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 19, 2019 18:11

We finally have a study specifically looking at the efficacy of the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, also known as the Autoimmune Paleo Diet or AIP, and Hashimoto’s disease. The exact title of the paper is, “Efficacy of the Autoimmune Protocol Diet as Part of a Multi-disciplinary, Supported Lifestyle Intervention for Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis” by Abbott et al. Published in April of 2019 in the journal Cureus.  I break down the study details below so you can better understand if this diet actually works for Hashimoto's disease. I have written before about the Autoimmune Paleo Diet but this was on a paper looking at inflammatory bowel disease which did show some promising results. The authors begin the study by stating some of the potential causes of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis including genetic and environmental factors, pregnancy, drugs, nutritional intake, vitamin D receptor defects and infections. They also state something very important which is the fact that individuals with Hashimoto’s disease who are treated with thyroid medication tend to continue to have a reduced quality of life and chronic symptoms like fatigue, nervousness, dry skin, hair loss, and irritability even though their thyroid numbers look fine. I also liked the fact that they stated there isn’t enough evidence that goitrogens consumed in moderation negatively impact thyroid function. How was this study done? 17 subjects between the ages of 20-45 with Hashimoto’s disease began the study but only 16 finished due to one of them getting pregnant. They couldn’t have been following the AIP diet within 30 days of starting the trial and it was ok for them to be taking thyroid medication. Subjects did a 2-week washout period and filled out symptom and food questionnaires. The following blood tests were done: TSH Total and Free T4 Total and Free T3 Reverse T3 Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (TGA) Complete blood count (CBC) Complete metabolic profile (CMP) Vitamin D Highly-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) And surprisingly they did an organic acids test and a stool analysis. A stool analysis is vital for those with Hashimoto’s disease to identify infections like H. pylori, Blastocystis hominis, and Yersinia enterocolitica. Organic acids gives a detailed view of overall metabolism so we know how well someone is making energy from fat, protein, and carbohydrates as well as detoxification, gut health markers, neurotransmitters, and certain amino acids, vitamins and minerals. After the two week washout period, the subjects started a 10-week process including: -Six weeks of food elimination which included gluten, all grains including gluten-free grains, dairy, nuts, legumes, nightshades, eggs, coffee, alcohol, seeds, refined sugars, oils, and food additives. -More nutrient-dense foods including bone broth, fermented foods, seafood, organ meats, and more mono and polyunsaturated fats. -Lifestyle modifications including sleep hygiene, support systems, stress management, movement, and more time outdoors. -A four-week maintenance phase with no food reintroductions. All participants had the support of health coaches and NTP’s who helped them with menu planning, grocery shopping, recipes, cooking, and lifestyle modification suggestions. Unfortunately, the participants engaged in a private Facebook group despite the fact the Facebook has been shown to cause anxiety and depression. Once the 10 week intervention was over the subjects repeated all of their lab tests and questionnaires to see how they responded. Did the Autoimmune Paleo Diet yield good results for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? All of the symptoms measured in the questionnaires improved and the symptom burden decreased significantly. None of the thyroid blood tests changed with any significance including TSH, total and free T4, total and free T3, and the thyroid antibodies did not change either.

The autoimmune paleo (or AIP) diet and community support together can benefit patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, according to a landmark study. AIP removes nightshades, eggs, nuts, seeds, ghee, and caffeine, in addition to standard paleo restrictions. The study’s community support (which included online health coaching) contributed to 90-100% adherence to this diet. Interestingly, multiple participants improved symptomatically and/or were able to reduce thyroid medication, while their antibody levels didn’t change. This suggests that caution is warranted when drawing conclusions about one’s health status from thyroid antibody levels. In this podcast, Dr. Robert Abbott—third-time guest on the show and researcher on the study—discusses other health lessons, and insights on beneficial clinical models. https://drruscio.com/?p=32044 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Robyn also shares insight in to which tests may be most valuable to run when suffering with autoimmune disease. The most important and initial consideration being a comprehensive stool test. As a result, we also start discussing the role of stress, gut health, nutrient status, immunity and infections, sleep and exercise play in supporting those with autoimmunity. The autoimmune paleo diet (AIP) also known as the autoimmune protocol diet is an extremely popular diet these days for autoimmune disease but there has never been any studies done to evaluate if it actually works.  Although testimonials should be taken into account, and there are many all over the internet,  the ultimate test for validity is a clinical trial. As of August 29th, 2017, we now have a study that looked at this diet and how effective it was for autoimmune disease.  The paper is entitled, “Efficacy of the Autoimmune Protocol Diet for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.”  Dr. Konijeti is the lead author and it was published in the journal Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Let’s dig into the study and see what they came up with.  The study included 18 adults but three of them withdrew because they couldn’t commit to the diet so there were only 15 participants.  9 of them had Crohn’s disease and 6 had ulcerative colitis.  Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are autoimmune inflammatory bowel diseases. What causes these diseases?  The authors note that Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are due to genetic factors, gut dysbiosis, dietary factors, environmental exposures, and immune system dysregulation.  This is mostly true for all types of autoimmune diseases but I would also include infections in this list such as viruses and bacteria. To be more specific regarding dietary factors that increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease, it is noted that a typical Western diet high in refined carbohydrates, omega-6 fatty acids, saturated fat, low in fiber, vitamins, and nutrient-dense foods are part of the problem. What is the autoimmune paleo diet (AIP)? The autoimmune protocol diet is also known as the autoimmune paleo diet since it is an offshoot of the classic paleo diet.  The following foods are eliminated from this diet: Gluten-containing grains Gluten-free grains Dairy Eggs Nuts Seeds Refined carbohydrates and sugar Legumes Nightshades Oils Food additives Coffee Alcohol Why are these particular items avoided in the autoimmune paleo diet? The goal is to remove any foods that tend to be inflammatory in nature and can lead to dysbiosis.  Approximately 70% of the immune system is in the gut and the microbiota have key connections with the immune system so it makes sense to reduce inflammatory stress in this area as much as possible. The autoimmune paleo diet consists of the following: Fruit Vegetables Lean meats Fish Healthy Fats Coconut Sweet potatoes A few additional items that are emphasized are fermented foods to help maintain a healthy microbiota and bone broth for intestinal healing and nutrient density. How did the subjects eat in this study? All subjects followed a 6-week elimination phase and then a 5-week maintenance phase where no foods could be reintroduced.  The participants had a lot of support including a private Facebook page where they could interact with each other and share recipes and ideas. Additionally, they worked with a health coach and a registered dietician.  The subjects were educated on proper sleep hygiene, stress management, exercise instruction, grocery shopping and food preparation including how to make bone broth and the benefits of fermented foods.  Education against the use of NSAIDs was also provided since these lead to bowel inflammation and contribute to dysbiosis. They were also given two books:  “The Paleo Approach:  Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body” by Ballantyne and “The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook:  An Allergen-Free Approach to Managing Chronic Illness” by Trescott.  These are two excellent books on the autoimmune paleo diet. C-reactive protein and fecal calprotectin were measured before and after the diet.  If you are a patient of mine you know that we always run c-reactive protein levels because it is an excellent marker of inflammation.

Latin American Paleo Cooking: Book Review

Latin American Paleo Cooking is a terrific new book of authentic Latin foods using Paleo substitutes for flour and sugar. You'll find plantains, cassava flour, potato, coconut flour, tapioca starch and more. Author Amanda Torres (The Curious Coconut) adapted her Puerto Rican mother-in-law's family recipes to a Paleo-safe diet. Amanda holds a Masters in Neuroscience and used Paleo foods and lifestyle principles to lose 80 pounds and recover from IBS and the auto-immune skin disorder H.S.  Having found Tara Grant's wonderful book on this disorder ("The Hidden Plague") Amanda was inspired to go Keto, heal her Leaky Gut and get her immune system under control. But she missed those Latin foods! (Listen to my podcast with Tara Grant on healing autoimmune disorders with diet awareness here). "Latin American Paleo Cooking" has 80 recipes without grains or dairy and most are Autoimmune Paleo adapted.  Starchy roots, tubers, and fruits make the dough for the many types of fritters, pancakes and turnovers featured here. There are desserts too but go easy on the starches and sugars... They're high in calories and may not digest well if you have issues with starchy carbs. Try some of these: Garlic Lime Shredded Chicken; Fried Plantain Sandwich on page 72 (pictured here), Queso Blanco on page 170 - white "cheese" made from Amanda's secret ingredients. It melts and stretches like regular Latin Queso! It's used in 9 recipes. For dessert, try the Coconut Milk Pudding or the "Rice" Pudding made from Yucca.  Chapters include Quick and Easy; Fiesta Foods; Family Dinners; The Essentials, and more.  Ingredients are available in Latin Grocery stores as well as online. Sarah is filming a special project with the women of Autoimmune Paleo! A press release from the American Heart Association conference: Low Gluten Diets May Be Associated with Higher Risk of Type 2 Diabetes List is a press release on not yet published study. Lowest gluten had 13% increase of Type 2 Diabetes. There was no gluten free groups and these people weren't pursuing a low gluten diet. Corrected for fiber intake, but no other risk factors This finding contradicts all other studies comparing gluten-free diets and Type 2 Diabetes. In fact recent study came out with mice that found gluten-free diets could be therapeutic for Type 2. No statistically higher risk of Type 2 for celiac disease patients as well Dr. Terry Wahls is out guest (12:43) It's a special show today! We have Dr. Terry Wahls on! She's a real deal real foods hero who maintains her Multiple Sclerosis with a whole foods diet! She is the author of The Wahls Protocol and the upcoming The Wahls Protocol: Cooking for Life Dr Wahls hasn't seen the press release, but seems like something from the trend of trying to debunk gluten free as a fad diet. While it's true that some gluten free people replace gluten foods with more expensive non-gluten grains, it is certainly not a nutrient deficient diet to replace gluten with vegetables like Dr. Wahls recommends Many study authors seem to be trying to design studies to debunk gluten free and their methods are flawed. Reading a press release or an abstract makes it difficult to figure out whether the study is valid. Stacy always ask what nutrients are you missing out on that you can't get from things that are not grains? They took 4 studies that correlated a large number of chronic health issues and tracked self reported food frequency. They split the groups into high gluten, medium gluten and low gluten and found the 13% lower risk in the high gluten group If you are sensitive then a low amount of gluten could maintain high inflammation They didn't report any other health condition correlation. Could this mean there is none? There are studies out there that find that paleo diets could be good for diabetes. So why take this one study as definitive? Dr. Wahl's new book is The Wahls Protocol: Cooking for Life She found that people who wanted to do her protocol were have trouble learning how to shift to cooking this way. The book is full of resources, techniques and tips and recipes. It's also designed around templates and techniques on how to adapt the templates to their own preferences. If you want more from Dr. Wahls, check out her website and her books, The Wahls Protocol and the upcoming The Wahls Protocol: Cooking for Life And if you want to participate in her study and have MS, check out her site here. Hey guys I am excited to share today's episode with Doni Rivers! We dive into how food allergies have really impacted her life especially her four kids... How she realized cradle cap, eczema, reflux and even her seasonal allergies were all tied to food choices. We talk about how this has sparked a passion for her to start her journey to become a naturopath... and how she wants to help other families. We will touch base on how they eat (autoimmune paleo diet - AIP) and how her husband accidentally lost 20 pounds by changing to this way of eating and how they are doing today. Let's go to the show! Guest Contact Info: PURE haven essentials www.doninontoxic.com Resources Mentioned: www.RealPlans.com Protein powder mentioned - Paleo Pro Green bean casserole recipe - dairy, soy, corn, grain free (recipe below) Doni Rivers Green bean casserole - dairy, soy, corn, grain free Ingredients Onion Topping 2-3 medium onions, very thinly sliced 2 eggs 3 tablespoons of canned coconut milk 2-3 tablespoons of coconut flour ½ cup coconut oil  Beans 2 quarts water 1 tablespoon table salt 1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces OR 2 12-ounce packages frozen cut green beans (thawed) Sauce 10 ounces mushrooms  3 cloves garlic, minced Salt to taste 2 tablespoons coconut flour 3/4 cup vegetable broth (I used Imagine's No-Chicken) 3/4 cup canned (full fat) coconut milk Onion topping instructions:  Thinly slice all the onions, separate, and put in medium bowl. Add the two eggs and the coconut milk and mix well until evenly incorporated. Add coconut flour and mix by hand until evenly coated (note:may use slightly more or less depending on your brand of coconut flour.) Put coconut oil in large skillet and turn on medium high heat. When hot, add the coated onions and evenly brown, turning occasionally. When browned, remove from heat and set aside. Instructions Beans: Bring the water to boil in a large pot. While it’s heating, cut up the beans. Add the salt and beans to the boiling water. Cover and cook for 6 minutes. Drain beans in a colander, and then spray for a minute with cold water to stop the cooking. Let them drain in the colander, shaking every now and then to get off all the water. IF USING FROZEN, you do not have to boil, just make sure they are thawed.  Sauce: Trim and discard the mushroom stems and chop the mushrooms into pieces. Coat pan with coconut oil and heat it. Add the mushrooms, garlic, and salt. Cook until mushrooms are very soft and exude their juices. Whisk the flour into the vegetable broth and add to the mushrooms. Simmer, stirring, until mixture thickens. Add the coconut milk and simmer until thick, about 5 to 10 minutes. Adjust the seasonings and stir in the beans. To assemble: Put the green beans into an oiled casserole dish and top with the onions. Bake at 400 F for about 15 minutes. If you are not serving this right away, refrigerate the topping separately; bring to room temperature before sprinkling the topping on the casserole and baking for about 20 minutes or until hot throughout.

Chris here, writing the show notes for this episode presented by my wife and food scientist Julia Kelly where she interviews Mickey Trescott, and Angie Alt. I’ve talked a lot about ketogenic diets on the podcast, but the truth is ketosis is a hack to improve my cognition and athletic performance. Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) is the diet that enabled me to recover my health, and since then, we’ve coached hundreds of other athletes in our practice using a very similar approach. With the diet cornerstone in place, I became curious about what else I could do to improve my health and athletic performance. Shortly after came my discovery of functional medicine and the hundreds, if not thousands, of other lifestyle factors that needed to be in place in order for me to have what I enjoy today.   The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook addresses the most important of those other lifestyle factors. Authors Mickey and Angie introduce a complementary solution that focuses on seven key steps to recovery: inform, collaborate, nourish, rest, breathe, move, and connect. Here’s the outline of this interview with Julia Kelly, Mickey Trescott, and Angie Alt: [00:01:43] The Paleo Mom. [00:04:26] autoimmune-paleo.com [00:07:22] The athlete's gut. She teaches cooking classes online and at seminars around the country, as well as at Bastyr University. Mickey is on the board of directors for Hashimoto’s Awareness, an advocacy organization for sufferers of Hashimoto’s disease. In 2012, Mickey founded Autoimmune-Paleo.com, a website with recipes and resources for those suffering from autoimmune diseases. She lives in Willamette Valley, Oregon. ANGIE ALT, NTC, CHC, is a Nutritional Therapy Consultant, Certified Health Coach and author of The Alternative Autoimmune Cookbook, a recipe, and guidebook for the Autoimmune Protocol. She is the creator of SAD to AIP in SIX, an online coaching program that has helped over 1,000 members on the path to wellness, teaching them how to transition their diets and lifestyle over a six-week period. In 2015, Angie became a partner at Autoimmune-Paleo.com. She lives in Washington, D.C. In our interview, Angie and Mickey teach several key principles for recovering from autoimmune disease: Empowerment - because it means the difference between wellness as drudgery and wellness and joy. Rebel Thinking - because autoimmune healing requires outside the box thinking and innovative methods - old school status quo doesn't work. Gentle Transitioning/Practical Application - because all the dietary & lifestyle adjustments in the world won’t help you achieve wellness if the implementation is a merciless process or the steps are impractical. You can live a vibrant, healthy life with autoimmune disease, by being proactive about your health and managing your care, both conventionally and naturally. Seven actions to the road to recovery include inform, collaborate, nourish, rest, breathe, move, and connect. Try an elimination and reintroduction protocol, like the autoimmune protocol, to get at the root of food-driven symptoms. The autoimmune paleo diet described in Eileen Laird’s new book reversed occult blood found on my stool test result and brought my Hs-CRP blood test for inflammation back into the normal range. I was already eating a paleo-type diet before I made the switch to AIP, and with hindsight I suspect that seeds, nuts and eggs were the main foods still causing me problems. I’m not alone, and process of eliminating common food allergens and then doing careful reintroductions is frequently helpful for the athletes that we work with. We’ve recommended Sarah Ballantyne’s book to hundreds of people. My mother in law owns two copies and lends them to strangers all the time. No doubt it’s a fantastic book, but sometimes I feel badly for burdening people with the task of reading it, especially if they’re not feeling good. You’ve probably noticed that most of the volume of any book comprises of the argument to support the prescription. What if you don’t care about the argument? Just tell me what to do. Eileen's new book: A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol does exactly that. You can read it in a couple of hours and know exactly what you should do next. Most people think of AIP as a diet but that’s not true, AIP is a lifestyle and the important lifestyle factors are described succinctly in Eileen’s book. Eileen Laird is an amazing women: deep tissue massage therapist, outdoors lover, author and podcast host. Eileen has been using autoimmune paleo diet (AIP) to successfully manage her once debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. Getting help. In this episode, Eileen is interviewed by the women who introduced me to AIP. Julia is my wife, and a food scientist, and I’ll be forever grateful to her for enabling me to execute the dietary rules so effortlessly, something she now teaches other people professionally. Are you struggling to make AIP work? Book a month of coaching with Julia. Julia doesn’t do food allergy testing or chronic food logging. Instead, she teaches via the phone or Skype and then follows up on a three-day food diary stored in Google Docs. Here’s the outline of this interview with Eileen Laird: 0:00:20 Eileen's book: A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP). 0:00:38 AIP was originally an elimination diet. 0:00:51 Nightshades and eggs were a problem for people with autoimmunity. 0:01:15 The second phase is reintroduction. 0:01:41 Seeds and spices. 0:01:58 People are started to appreciate the lifestyle component. 0:02:18 Sleep, stress, self-talk. 0:02:51 The goal is to live the best life possible with autoimmunity. 0:03:03 Who is AIP for? 0:03:39 Do you need a diagnosis? 0:04:17 Over 100 autoimmune diseases are classified. 0:04:33 Multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), lupus. 0:04:41 Diabetes. 0:04:46 Skin diseases. 0:04:57 Eczema is an immune reaction. 0:05:05 Lichen planus. 0:05:52 Sometimes a diagnosis is hard to make. 0:07:06 If you've already tried paleo and there are lingering symptoms then AIP can help. 0:07:53 Eileen was healthy, active, fit. 0:08:35 Woke up one day with pain 0:08:51 Same problem on both sides is classic RA. 0:10:12 Eileen has been lucky in not needing medication. 0:10:36 Eileen reclaimed joy in her life within a few months. 0:11:08 Now back to working full time and hiking. 0:11:41 Eileen took things in steps. 0:11:58 Tried vegetarian and veganism. 0:12:18 Paleo is a good starting point for people intimidated by AIP. 0:13:07 Eileen waited 5 months on paleo before going full AIP. 0:13:47 Bland food is not sustainable! 0:14:06 Now there are lots of good resources. 0:14:39 Dairy, even the best dairy were a problem. 0:15:28 AIP can be complex, how can we make it simpler? 0:16:12 Book: Better Than Before: What I Learned About Making and Breaking Habits--to Sleep More, Quit Sugar, Procrastinate Less, and Generally Build a Happier Life. 0:17:36 Planning is essential. 0:17:49 Out of sight, out of mind. 0:18:28 Household support is important. 0:19:01 Angie at Autoimmune Paleo. 0:20:08 AIP is not supposed to be forever but the reintroduction phase can be hard. 0:22:12 The reintroduction of eggs was important to Eileen. 0:23:33 Reintroduction requires patience. 0:23:44 Being the focus of a science experiment is incredibly empowering. 0:24:20 If you get it wrong, you've got to back to square one, another 30 days. 0:25:01 Symptoms are the guide. 0:25:47 Until you clear some of the inflammation, everything is noise. 0:26:40 Struggling emotionally is a consideration. 0:27:12 Eileen reintroduced at six weeks. 0:27:28 Some wait a year. 0:27:36 You should reintroduce! I've just got back from three wonderful weeks of travelling in the UK, and while I was there, I ran into some old friends who've been listening to my podcast. "Lots of great information, but not much prescriptive," they said. "What the heck is it that you do for a living now?". Well, that's the question that this show attempts to answer.  And who better than Amelia to help me describe what it is that we do at Nourish Balance Thrive. Amelia and I have been working together for about a year now, and I'm proud to announce that she's now my first full-time employee. In a nutshell: Nourish Balance Thrive is the wellness programme created by athletes, for athletes. We've had great results recommending a Paleo diet, especially The Whole30 and Autoimmune Paleo protocol, along side environment hacks to improve sleep and manage stress. We don't design training plans, but we do recommend walking and lifting heavy things. If you're already doing these things and aren't getting the brochure experience, then now might be a good time to start doing some testing. Each set of results are unique, but the set of tests I use don't vary much. The tests are: The BioHealth 205 Adrenal Stress Profile The Genova Diagnostics 0091 Organix Comprehensive Profile The BioHealth 401H GI Pathogen Screen A basic blood chemistry with CBC, CWP, iron panel, Vitamin D, A1c, insulin, homocysteine, B12, folate and more. Am I missing a test you've found to be helpful? Let me know in the comments below. I know from personal experience that when you've been feeling like crap for a long time, perception of normal becomes distorted. You can now quantify your normal and track its improvement using my Health Assessment Questionnaire, coded by my own fair hand using the Python programming language. In the show, I mentioned this LED lighting kit.

You also can find her on Instagram, or on her book tour. Mickey and I have a lot in common. We both suffered a health crisis; we both are sensitive to gluten, and both had thyroid issues. The good news is that using a combination of the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) and functional medicine we've both made a full recovery. You can too! You can read the full version of Mickey's story, from asthma to Hashimoto's thyroiditis over on her blog. I first discovered her book using the Google search "AIP cookbook". At that time, the Paleo Mom had tons of great information on the science on her site, but there wasn't much in the way of help trying to figure out what you should eat. Mickey's cookbook proved to me that AIP wasn't just survivable; it was good! It's important to note that whilst AIP is a crucial first step to recovering from autoimmunity; it's not the only part. Rest, exercise, stress management and supplements are all important. An unhealthy host makes a great home for infection and hormone imbalance. The liver often struggles to keep up with the additional demand and the burden of nutrient deficiencies. Figuring all this out is only hard if you're guessing. Don't guess, do a test! Find out how in a free 15-minute consultation. Sign up and I will send you a PDF preview of the cookbook and a 2-week AIP meal planner!
