In this extended episode, I interview Dr. Venu Panicker and Michaela Fábry Pardubská, MBA about the life science of Ayurveda. Originating in India about 5000 years ago, many of the descriptions of Ayurveda are given in the original Sanskrit form in which the Hindu Vedas were written, with an English equivalent given by Dr Venu as he guides us through the key elements of Ayurveda. You will hear about the Panchakarmas - or five (5) cleansing procedures which are used to detoxify the body. These are Vamana – vomiting; Virechana – purgation; Vasthi – enemas; Nasya – nasal drops; and Raktha moksha – or blood letting. As Dr Venu explains, not every patient needs to receive each of these cleansing procedures and it depends on the individual as to which is best for them, according to which of the Doshas, a person's energy type, is predominant in an individual's body and mind. In this way, Ayurveda is best described as a holistic practice, focussing on the whole person and looking at the causes of their ailments or illnesses, not just focussing on the symptoms. Other Sanskrit words you will hear in the podcast describe the various treatments which may be prescribed for an individual including: (1) Abhyangam – a full body massage; (2) Udwarthanam – a type of body scrub using herbal powders; (3) Sirodhara – the dripping of medicated oil on the forehead or 3rd eye; (4) Kizhy – best described as a bundle or pouch massage [ the pouch contains herbs, herbal powder , lemon, rice etc and any one of them is used for massaging the body after tying them in a piece of cloth like a pouch]; (5) Siro abhyanga – a head massage; and (6) Pizhil – an oil bath. Michaela Pardubská who has undergone many of the treatments described in the podcast and who has adopted an Ayurvedic lifestyle to improve her health and wellbeing, describes the benefits she has gained from the treatments and the changes it has made to her body and mind. Michaela and Dr Venu have organised several retreats to India, Croatia and Slovakia where the Ayurvedic lifestyle can be experienced at first hand. The upcoming trip to Kerala, in southern India, is a wonderful opportunity to live the Ayurvedic practice and to explore some of the beautiful nature that can be found in the state of Kerala. The retreats will incorporate the daily practice of yoga and meditation. To find out more about the opportunities to join the retreat in Kerala at the end of January 2023 - beginning of February 2023, please see the website at: https://www.ayurdia.eu or contact Michaela directly at manager@ayurdia.eu . Dr Venu can be contacted directly on +798 27 28 28 00 or by email at doctor@ayurdia.eu The general aim of the podcast series is to be entertaining for all listeners, as well as being educational, assisting upper-intermediate and advanced level English language students with additional listening practice. Health and well-being are the greatest assets you have, they are priceless. Unfortunately, many people can take them for granted. Now, more than ever can be a great opportunity to revitalise your wellbeing, reconnect with the essence of who you are, rediscover your purpose and embrace a mindset of growth and possibility. This is why I'm launching the ‘Self-Development Club', and in this episode, I invite you to join. Empowering you to make positive lifestyle changes. Learning by doing. Appreciating the potential of small positive changes to compound and make a big difference over time. Today, I talk about why, when it comes to your wellbeing, everything in your life is interconnected. Mind, body, emotion, spirit, and environments all impact who you are and who you become. Just as you can't pour from an empty cup, self-care gives you the energy and capacity to give more to others. Of course, self-care is not a narcissistic, egotistical form of selfish self-centered care. Neither is it a quest for perfectionism, simply being ‘good enough', including to yourself. For me it's a foundation stone to not just take good care of yourself but everyone else that matters. My experience as a pioneer in the field of positive health and lifestyle medicine inspires me to host the ‘Self-Development Club' where the purpose is to inform, encourage and empower you to make positive lifestyle changes, that stick. During each monthly Live Webinar, which can also be watched back, I'll teach a variety of ‘Lifestyle as Medicine' concepts, all evidence-based and backed up with practical tips, and strategies to support your personal growth. There will be mindful practices and optional reflective exercises between sessions, all to support your ‘self-development. ‘To explore wellbeing, live with more vitality, and to never stop starting. On this episode we dive into: Finding things that ground usHow we can be more intentional, especially during our busy livesNavigating conversations with others who might be struggling in their mindfulness journeyDana asks, what are things that help ground you? Our future thoughts, our thought projections, can throw us off balance. Having grounding practices can bring us back to the present moment and support mindfulness.More isn't better, being intentional is better. When we live more intentionally, it can have a huge positive impact on our brain health. We are not our thoughts, we are the awareness of our thoughts. The Take Home:Whether it's a bath, or a heating pad on your belly, finding things during the day to feel grounded is a game-changer! When you get to a certain point in your mindfulness practice, you are more in tune with suffering. When we are grounded, it's easier to maintain our energy levels when we are around people who might be in a more negative headspace. We talk about the Gut/Brain connection and how gut health can play a role in anxiety, depression (and especially inflammation). In addition to the importance of fibre and how everyone's gut microbiome (GM) is unique to them. So any dietary changes made need to be monitored and done slowly to establish what the gut of each individual can tolerate using the 4R protocol (4 steps to repairing the gut) REMOVE/REPLACE/REINOCULATE/REPAIR Vincent discusses what people can do to get their body functioning optimally which is of paramount importance during COVID-19. About Rich Ennis "Trippy Trip" Richard Ennis, AKA Trippy Trip, is a rapper from South Jersey. He was born in Cape May Courthouse, but primarily raised in the small Island town of Wildwood NJ. Richard started his passion at just age 11 writing simple raps as a way of venting his frustrations. At that age he used his music as retaliation and stress relief from heavy bullying he received in middle school. By the time he was 15 Rich realized that his talent was way more than a hobby and decided to take it more serious. From age 15 to 18 Rich began releasing karaoke and cheaply recorded mix tape CDs to his friends. After high school he attended Rowan University and in his freshman year joined the club Lyrical Alliance which helped him really improve his song writing and performance skills. After a few more minor mix tapes that were recorded by himself and in dorm rooms Rich realized he had to make a change. In 2013 through a friend and fellow artist Rich Ennis met Tommy Capuano of Resilient Studios and recorded his first official full length Mix tape, Music You Can Nod To. This new project helped Rich get the attention of his peers and many other artists in the Philadelphia and Jersey regions. After doing live shows and releasing a music video Rich then released his second project Translucent in October of 2016. From this project Rich has received even more acclaim and has been on radio shows and more. His hit single Memory Lane has over 1500 listens on Sound cloud and its music video has over 500 views. Now Rich is working on an album and pushing Translucent any way he can. Rich is a humble rapper and considers his music to be conscious hip hop. He writes to inspire others and because he loves the culture of hip hop immensely. Because of the highly drug and crime influenced mainstream media Rich strongly advocates for a drug free and positive life. Rich graduated from Rowan University in 2015 with a BA in Psychology. Rich Ennis' motto in life is that there is no such thing as failure. Every choice or move in life is either a success or a stepping stone to success. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp4QgnrEfX0 Listen to Rich's Translucent Mix Tape https://soundcloud.com/trippy156/sets/translucent-full-mixtape Connect with Rich "Trippy Trip" Ennis! Fix My Head Before I'm Dead with Dean Roberts I'll Fix My Head before I'm dead takes the reader by the hand and guides him through the nostalgic meandering of Memory Lane. With wistful overtones and a stream of consciousness uninterrupted by punctuation, you cannot help but fall into rhythm with Roberts' thoughts as he reflects on a life lived to its fullest. Dean offers an open invitation to relive some of his most vulnerable moments and never fails to cap each story with a moral he gleaned from it. Roberts imparts decades of wisdom, using simple sentences to convey simple but elusive truths. Could Roberts' parallel experiences and the lessons provide retrospective clarity for you? The book weaves together uncensored journal entries from times and places long ago and far away, with a narrative of hard-earned maturity. Dean's book is about his journey from being expelled from school at age 16 to to creating a multi-million dollar manufacturing business 25 yrs later. The book chronicles his attempts to train himself in the art of living in a positive and great full way. To purchase Dean's book from Amazon.com, Click Here.
