Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2021 107:37

Our next installment of MAYbe It's Horror is Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece: Robocop. Verhoeven had passed on this project until the intervention of his wife and Barbara Boyle encouraged him to look past a seemingly silly title. After reading the script, then dozens of Judge Dredd comics, Verhoeven dove into the film so deeply that he even ended up making a cameo (in the night club). On this episode, we feature director and friend, Price James, who will shamelessly admit this is his favorite film. Follow him on Instagram @fisherpricejames to see his upcoming projects, including a Barbie version of his Action Man: Battlefield Casualties ad. During our discussion, we talk about everything from Robocop's photo opportunity with Rudy Guliani (which sadly took place with the Boy Scouts and not in front of a landscaping business) to literary references in the film. If you know Jake, his obsession with Robocop is nearly as old as his fascination with dinosaurs. Well guess what? He even crowbars in a reference to Robocop: The Future of Law Enforcement issue 7 from Marvel, which published in 1990, depicting our favorite chrome-clad cop fighting cloned dinosaurs. The music was by Basil Poledouris. We discuss the nature of his work and how its satirical style almost becomes a character in this film and that of Starship Troopers, which Verhoeven also directed. Also, side note, did you know he did the music for Hot Shots! Part Deux? Stop-motion animation was done by Academy Award Winning effects designer, Phil Tippett. The actors were truly remarkable. Peter Weller plays Alex James Murphy, who is by no means an everyman, rather a what every man aspires to be. His foil, is Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker. He embodies slime and scum and everything you love to hate on celluloid. Nancy Allen, who many remember from her role in Carrie, is Anne Lewis, a tough, but tremendously lovable cop. Ronny Cox plays Dick Jones, who is just a nasty person. Imagine rubbing your poop hands in someone's hair after the horrors of 2020?! Last there is Miguel Ferrer as Bob Morton, the guy who gets the poop in the hair! Do you want to know how Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner conceived of the film? Details on filing in Texas? Budget? Costuming? Mime coaches?! Well, get in the car, because I usually drive when I'm breaking in a new partner. Oh, and as a lil extra sizzle for each of those seemingly rhetorical questions: on the set of Blade Runner, it was over budget and over 100 degrees, Rob Bottin designed it but was feuding with Verhoeven so badly that he stopped coming to set, and Juliard professor of movement, Moni Yakim (who just had a new documentary published about him: Creating a Character: The Moni Yakim Legacy). Another thrilling installment of MAYbe It's Horror is upon us with the 2001 cinematic masterpiece, Freddy Got Fingered. The film stars Tom Green, who also directed and wrote the film, along with his friend, Derek Harvie. The film was nominated for a total of eight Razzie Awards, winning five: worst screenplay, worst actor, worst director, worst screen couple, and worst picture, though it lost for worst supporting actor, worst supporting actress, and worst movie of decade. We compare the film to its contemporaries: Tomcats, American Pie, Say It Isn't So, Joe Dirt, and so forth. Rip Torn plays Green's onscreen father, Jim Brody. We talk about his depiction, the comparisons to Green's real-life, and whether or not he did in fact do the Freddy fingering. Marisa Coughlan plays Betty Menger, Green's differently-abled significant other, whose passions are rocket propulsion and fellatio. Harland Williams plays Darren, the only functional person in the film. We also talk about the saddest misfortune of this film, the fact that all of Stephen Tobolowsky's scenes were cut due to homophobic screen-testers. Sadly, as the film is now owned by Disney, it seems the likelihood of the long-desired Director's Cut will never happen. We also discuss X-Ray Cat and Zebras in America by Beavis and Butthead alum, Chris Prynoski. How does this film compare to The Breakfast Club with Anthony Michael Hall and Kazam with Shaquille O'Neil? We talk about it. Did you know some poor MF was arrested over this film in 2016? For a warrant from 2002! That is the slothly hand of justice working wonders. This week's "Hidden Track" is Hellfir, with their song, Conquerors. The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto’s Disease | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa HealthWhile thyroid disease can occur in various forms, one of the most common is called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid gland and diminishes its ability to create precious hormones—ones that impact every cell of the body. Hashimoto’s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in the US, with women at much higher risk, being 7 to 8 times more likely than men to get it. Because of its autoimmune component, people with Hashimoto’s are actually at a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases as well. The good news is that the right diet and lifestyle choices can work wonders when it comes to treating and healing the thyroid. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease. They also delve into common triggers of Hashimoto’s disease, and much more.George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. (Explicit Language Warning. And it's funny, too!) Humor, compassion, and candor are the driving forces in Marnie Nir’s work as VP of Content and Expert Coach with Handel Group. She finally returned from Florida (a period in her life she likes to refer to as “witness protection”) to her home state of New York, but has shuffled around from New York to California and back again throughout her life. Marnie’s professional and personal life have come full-circle as well. A student of Slavic Language and Literature at UCLA, Marnie graduated with a BA and an understanding of Russian Literature as “purification through suffering”. Years later, after several jobs in publicity and production, most notably for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle live tour (can’t make this stuff up), she began to see that, at least in her own life, suffering was not mandatory. After marrying and giving birth to her first child, Marnie started coaching with her sister, Lauren Zander, creating the dream of who she wanted to be as not-her-mother. However, her work with Lauren took everything in her life to a much deeper level. More than a decade later, she is now an empty nester of two, co-author with Lauren Zander of Maybe It’s You, VP of Content & Development, and an Expert Coach in The Handel Method. She has also continued her creative work, namely as co-creator of the animated series Mother Up!, which aired 13 episodes on Hulu and starred Eva Longoria, serving as an expert at Campowerment, blogging for the Huffington Post, as well as writing her own blog. As with every area of her life, Marnie’s coaching is characterized by joyful honesty. She brings lightness and levity to her work. “I have zero problem telling on myself. I use my inner jerk to point out theirs.” Consequently she is continually inspired by the difference that telling the truth offers to her clients. For Marnie, it’s about building the muscle of Personal Integrity, where what comes out of your mouth is what shall be. “In this way, you can really go from ‘I will go to the gym,’ to ‘I will win an Emmy.’” Having been married for more than 24 years, Marnie particularly enjoys working with wives, mothers, and singles, because she is well-acquainted with the challenges they face and speaks b*#ch, martyr, and chicken fluently. She lives in Pound Ridge, NY with her husband and Facetimes often with her two children. My first male guest, Mario Scott is joining us at the kitchen table to talk all-things leadership. A leadership expert working with executives and teams to lead more efficiently and effectively, he leaves us with a few laughs and take-aways on how we can begin to lead differently - from the inside out. How do you define leadership? Would you say that your leadership is untapped? Are you leading yourself the same way you are leading those who are following you? Hmmmm! This episode is packed with nuggets that you can implement NOW, whether leading at work, home, or life. From me gifting 4 strategies to climb, what I call, the L.E.A.D. ladder, to Mario adding on the notion of leading from the inside out, we talk redefining leadership, the idea of proving yourself as a leader, assessing how you are showing up for the leader within you, for your clients, and even how your leader at work/school is showing up...hmmmmm. We even talk leadership at home and recognizing the balance that some women must still make when it comes to leadership. This is a no-miss episode that you will want to grab you CC&C journal for, forward to a friend, and assess how you are showing up! The affirmation leading this episode is I am in touch with my thoughts and mindful of my actions. This episode will challenge you with the question, Are You? I welcome each of you (minute 1:00), gift a bit of coaching (minute 4:05) and soul-work (minute 5:23), celebrate your takeaways and highlight the greatness you are during cocktails (minute 12:08) then invite Mario to conversations (minute 13:49) with a rich conversation on all-things leadership! What has changed in Lauren's world since Josh interviewed her in October 2018 for episode 248. 248 Lauren Handel Zander Maybe It's You by Lauren Handel Zander The exercises she leads people through to help them purge everything they've been subjected to in their lives. Lauren's group activity with friends to help them stay accountable for the promises and goals they have set for themselves throughout the year. (8:40)   10:20 Loving Our Lives By Facing The Fear The importance of working with people who you can put your whole trust in each gathering. How our realities are created by everything we say and everything we think. (12:00) Common narratives that we create around money and how we can end them. The importance of looking at our parents, siblings, and grandparents' own stories to learn more about how we feel about money. 311 Mark Wolynn Why so many of our thoughts and beliefs aren't even our own but those that were passed onto us from previous generations. The negative side of white-knuckling because of fear instead of relaxing and allowing the change to flow. (17:50) How to change how you talk to yourself and making that a positive practice every day.   22:00 What Your Shame Spirals Are Teaching You How the human mind is wired to feel guilty and justify every broken promise we have made to ourselves like not getting up to go work out just so we feel better about ourselves. Why creating the stories, drama, and feeling guilty about yourself isn't going to create any good change for your life. How our constant shame spirals are "proving" what is wrong with us and what we can learn from them. Byron Katie How adding the consequence of "pay the bill and do the deed" to your personal development strategy can help push you that much more to stay loyal to your goals. (27:30) The four questions you should ask yourself when you're faced up against a fake story about yourself including, "Is it true?" Why we get caught up in surges of looped drama because we're wired to become addicted to how it makes us, in a sense, feel alive. (29:00) The fact that over 80% of our thoughts are negative and actually looping from the day before. Organifi Red   32:00 How To Rewire Your Self-Talk & Effective Couple Communication Skills The importance of rewiring how and what you say to yourself on a daily basis. How she teaches people to develop a new language for their dreams and a new self-dialogue. Why keeping secrets to ourselves instead of airing them out is literally the act of keeping them alive. The fact that just hearing someone out and saying that you "understand" them actually means nothing for the relationship. Why you have to understand that sharing your truth won't actually make another person do anything. (39:45) Her work with couples to help them understand that in an argument, no one is right, no one is wrong, and you don't even have to agree; you just have to understand where they're coming from. How to know that it's time to call it quits and end your relationship. (42:30) Dr. Mark Hyman   47:30 Making Decisions Based On Love Or Fear; No Story Attached The difference between coming from a higher place of love and a lower place of fear. Our three different integrities explained: spiritual, emotional, and physical. What personal integrity means and how it can only be obtained when we are in alignment with ourselves. (51:00) The 12 areas of personal integrity that we have to focus on and not just one like the career area. Why it's so important to create 12 new dreams every year for each area of your life. How to let our dark side be free and expressed rather than shamed. Who Inner.U is for and how you can benefit from it by working with Lauren and her team. What wellness means to her now in 2019 compared to last year in episode 248. M21 Guide   Power Quotes From The Show   Feelings Have A Magnetic Force "You are thinking, doing, and feeling all at the same time but the feeling is the result of the other two. It's the one that comes from your thoughts or your actions. So, you change your action, you will think and feel differently. You change your thought, you will act and feel differently. The feeling is the main magnetic force." - Lauren Handel Zander     The Definition Of Personal Integrity "When your dreams, your vision for yourself, your actions, and how you feel are all aligned, that is personal integrity." - Lauren Handel Zander     Changing Your Inner Dialogue By Taking Action "Whatever you want has the actions that correlate to it. If you want to learn French, you have to study it and then probably go practice it. There's nothing under the sun that many of us can't figure out how to get to an A at and there's no shaming required to admit that you want to get an A at something. However, there is really getting over yourself and believing in yourself and all of that comes from how you talk to yourself." - Lauren Handel Zander   Links From Today's Show Inner.U Coach The Handel Group Current Reality Quiz 248 Lauren Handel Zander Maybe It's You by Lauren Handel Zander 311 Mark Wolynn Byron Katie Organifi Red Dr. Mark Hyman M21 Guide A Little Magic Goes a Long Way Lauren Handel Zander Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Handel Group Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn   About Lauren Handel Zander Lauren, the Co-Founder and Chairwoman of Handel Group®, has spent over 20 years coaching thousands of private clients: entrepreneurs, couples, families, professors, politicians, Emmy, Peabody and Academy Award-winning artists, Grammy-winning musicians, and Fortune 500 CEOs. Nela Richardson, an investment strategist at Edward Jones, and Bloomberg columnist Cameron Crise give their outlooks. Richardson says a lot of older clients are reluctant to make less risky investments due to the huge returns they’ve enjoyed in 2019.
