On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to Bo Winegard and Noah Carl, the editors behind the online publication Aporia Magazine, founded in 2022. Winegard and Carl are both former academics. Winegard has a social psychology Ph.D. from Florida State University, and was an assistant professor at Marietta College. He was an editor at Quillette before moving to Aporia. Carl earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Oxford University. He was a research fellow at St. Edmund's College, Cambridge, before becoming a contributor to The Daily Skeptic and UnHerd, and a managing editor at Aporia. First, Razib asks Winegard and Carl about their respective cancellations, and the recent attacks on Aporia from the British media in particular. Winegard observes that many of the criticisms were muddled, as journalists struggled to get basic facts straight about who did what, as well as mixing up present associations among various editors with past ones. The two also address the change in the culture over the last few years, as cancellations seem to have lost some of their bite. Then Razib asks Winegard about the perception that Aporia is fixated on the third-rail of American culture: race and IQ, and its relevance to social policy and politics. Winegard talks about how he has long since said everything he has to say on the topic, but he still finds that the public conversation fails to address the possibility of cognitive differences between populations, and so keeps finding himself wading back in, to fill a gap in the discourse. Razib also asks the editors about their view of “cold winters theory,” which attempts to explain the higher IQs of temperate zone populations versus tropical ones. Then they discuss the disappointments of the MAGA movement, and its appeal to populist emotion. Winegard had hoped that despite its inchoate nature, it might have been able to pare back the radical excesses of the progressive cultural changes of the 2010's, but now he worries that overreach may up the chances that woke policies make a comeback with the inevitable political backlash in the next few years. Winegard also addresses his personal souring on reflexive anti-wokism, and Carl shares his own views from across the Atlantic, where Britain appears to follow in the US' footsteps, even if from an entirely different social-historical context. Winegard discusses the difficulties of maintaining a consistent heterodoxy in the face of tribalistic demands for conformity. Finally, they discuss the path forward for publications like Aporia that do not toe any particular party line.

In today's episode, we explore the evolution of patient safety and the transformative role of technology in healthcare. The conversation dives into how innovations—from advanced command centers to cutting-edge virtual reality and AI applications—are redefining how hospitals prevent and respond to medical errors. The discussion challenges the conventional blame-and-shame approach and instead highlights the importance of building systems that foster trust and resilience among healthcare professionals and patients alike. We also examine the nuances of integrating technology into complex healthcare environments, discussing how effective communication, standardized protocols, and smart design can work together to minimize human error. Drawing insightful parallels with industries like aviation, the episode offers a fresh perspective on the critical need for systemic improvements and the potential for new technological solutions to drive the next generation of patient safety. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: How is technology transforming patient safety in healthcare? What role do advanced command centers, virtual reality, and AI play in preventing medical errors? If you like baseball you'll love this interview. I you like Pittsburgh sports, you'll love this interview. Former Pittsburgh Pirate closer and World Series Champion Kent Tekulve joins Tim in this special extended episode. Kent talks baseball, Pittsburgh, how to teach kids about sports, and somewhat about life. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Kent_Tekulve_-_The_Closer_auphonic.mp3 This is an extended conversation where I promise you that after you listen to this, you'll feel like you made a new best friend. With that in mind, we're going to get right to our interview. But before we do, I think I owe it to you to give you some of the basics. Kent Tekulve is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He was a tall, skinny reliever and a closer in his career, which included stops in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Cincinnati. You can learn a ton if all you do is search for his name online, and you'll get all his stats. But I have to say, there is one stat they got wrong. Kent is listed at 6'4” on all of the breakdowns. That is simply not true. Kent Tekulve pitched in more than 1,000 major league games during the 1970s and 80s. He recorded an unbelievable 184 saves. He was a closer, and if you know anything about baseball, closers are the coolest dudes on the roster. They come in when the pressure's on and they close out the game. He's most known as a Pittsburgh Pirate, but not just any Pirate. Kent was the pitcher on the mound to get the last out of the seventh game in the 9th inning of the 1979 World Series. This was the last time the Pirates made it to the World Series, and the last time they won a World Series. Kent was on the mound in Baltimore for that feat. He came up in the minors with the Pirates and played in his first major league game in 1974. He's  was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for 16 years, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. He was best known as a side-arm pitcher who threw the final pitch to help the Pittsburgh Pirates win the 1979 World Series. Tekulve graduated from Marietta College in Ohio, and then signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for them until 1985.  His most memorable seasons were 1978 and 1979 when he saved 31 games and posted ERAs of 2.33 ('78) and 2.75 ('79). In 1979, he was key to the Pirates World Series season and in Game 7 of the World Series that year in Baltimore. In 1985, the Pirates traded him to the Phillies. In 1989, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds, retiring from baseball at mid-season. Tekulve led the National League in games pitched four times, appearing in 90 or more games three times. He is one of two pitchers (also Mike Marshall) in baseball history to appear in 90 or more games more than once. They did it three times each. Tekulve had three saves in the 1979 World Series, which tied the single-Series mark set by Pittsburgh Pirate Elroy Face in the 1960 World Series. That record would stand until 1996. Tekulve holds the National League record for career innings pitched in relief (1,436+2⁄3). For a time, he held the major league record for career relief appearances - 1,050 career games, all in relief. Tekulve holds career records for most appearances and innings pitched without making a single start. He still resides in the Pittsburgh area.

In episode 47, Chris and Emma talked with Katy McDaniel and Emily Strand from the Potterversity podcast. Katy is a professor of history at Marietta College, and Emily is a professor of religious studies at Mt. Carmel College of Nursing. Emma is the technical director for Potterversity, so her worlds collide in this conversation. We kicked off the discussion by learning more about how the Potterversity pod used to be called something else. It was renamed because of the comments made by the creator of Harry Potter in 2020, which led to the whole team rethinking and realigning their values. We talked about the difficulties of loving art while grappling with problematic artists and authors. Values in the Harry Potter series were a major part of this episode, and we discussed multiple scenes and characters through the lens of positive disintegration. We engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about the significance of difficult emotions and their contribution to personal growth and transformation. We acknowledged the societal pressure to constantly pursue happiness and challenge the notion that something must be wrong if one is not always happy. Embracing powerful and challenging emotions is essential for personal development and transformation. The Harry Potter books do not promise a life devoid of troubles or a fairy-tale ending. Instead, it presents a narrative of alchemical transformation, where characters undergo loss and face challenges, ultimately emerging as something greater. Positive disintegration was explored in this episode as the process of breaking down and reconstructing one's values and sense of self. This transformative journey often entails experiencing difficult emotions such as guilt, shame, ambivalence, and concern for others' opinions. By breaking free from societal scripts and expectations, akin to the characters in Harry Potter, individuals can foster personal growth and authenticity.Overall, the episode underscores the importance of embracing difficult emotions and experiences as catalysts for personal growth and transformation. It challenges the societal expectation of constant happiness and highlights the value of navigating challenging periods to achieve personal development.Links from this episodePotterversity podcastPotterversity Episode 39: Considering Cockroach Clusters: Food in the Wizarding World - Part TwoPotterversity Episode 40: Unpacking PetuniaEmily's website Potterversity: Essays Exploring the World of Harry Potter (Pre-order now in stock!)Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma Connect with usPositive Disintegration on SubstackVisit the Dabrowski Center websiteFacebookInstagramThe Positive Disintegration YouTube ChannelAdults with Overexcitabilities group on FacebookDabrowski Center and Positive Disintegration Podcast Community on FacebookThe Tragic Gift blog by EmmaEmail us at positivedisintegration.pod@gmail.comPlease consider supporting the podcast to help fund this work through the Dabrowski Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.Find Positive Disintegration MerchIf you enjoyed this episode on Apple or Spotify, please remember to click on the stars and leave a rating or write a review. Marietta's hotel-motel tax revenue contributes to the authority's revenue, but some officials are questioning the continuation of the subsidy for three more decades. Marietta's City Council plans to discuss the matter further in a special meeting on August 9.   Story 3: test   The 2022-2023 Georgia Milestones test scores show that Marietta City Schools saw significant improvements in reading across most grade levels, particularly in third-grade reading with a 20-point increase. This improvement is attributed to the Literacy and Justice for All program. However, the average score for high schoolers in algebra saw a 23-point drop since last year. In contrast, Cobb County School District's scores remained relatively steady or slightly dropped, with some grade levels showing declines in reading. He survived medical experiments, starvation, and death marches during the Holocaust. The symposium aimed to promote Holocaust education and raise awareness about the dangers of antisemitism and discrimination.   Story 6: jackson   Republican Cobb County Tax Commissioner Carla Jackson, the first Black tax commissioner in Cobb County's history, is switching to the Democratic Party ahead of next year's election. She has been reelected twice as a Republican but will now seek reelection as a Democrat. Jackson cited the changes in the Republican Party since 2016 as her reason for the switch and mentioned that her beliefs and values as a Black woman are in direct opposition to GOP actions regarding race, voting rights, gender, and the environment. The Cobb Democratic Committee welcomed her to the party.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Drake- Ingles 7- JRM   Story 7: foti   The Walton Raiders achieved their 23rd overall state title in girls' tennis, winning the Georgia state playoffs under coach Anthony Foti's leadership. Foti was named the 2023 Cobb County Girls Tennis Coach of the Year. Despite facing setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a wrist injury, he played consistently as the No. 1 singles player and led his team to its first-ever state championship. Santana's performance earned him the title of 2023 Cobb County Boys Tennis Player of the Year. Motivated by past missed opportunities, he fought hard in every match, and the culmination of his efforts led to an emotional victory. Santana will continue his tennis journey at Georgia College and State University.   Story 9: rhodes   Cody Rhodes, a professional wrestler, reminisces about his WWE career, starting in Detroit in 2007 when he inducted his father, Dusty Rhodes, into the WWE Hall of Fame. The Far Middle episode 81 arrives amidst the holiday season, with Hanukkah and Christmas just around the corner. Someone you wouldn’t want to see around the corner, if you were an NFL wideout in the 50s and 60s, is Hall of Fame cornerback Dick “Night Train” Lane—this Far Middle’s dedication. Nick transitions from trains to rivers and lands at Marietta, Ohio. Marietta, which sits at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers, is the setting of this week’s episode as Nick reviews three recent presentations he delivered last week while in southeastern Ohio. The first two talks were delivered to students at Marietta College, followed by a third address to members of the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley. Listen as Nick reviews the rich history of Marietta before delving into his question-and-answer session with students. “You’re going to be me in 30 years,” Nick explained to the young adults in attendance, telling them to expect twists and turns along their career journeys. Next, Nick summarizes his remarks given to a class on ethical leadership. “The way I approached this opportunity was to talk about baking a cake, and the cake we’re going to bake is how you build ethical leadership within a team, or a company, or an industry,” describes Nick as he walks through the steps and “ingredients” to baking a cake of ethical leadership. “Make your values come alive each and every day through your decision-making.” Finally, Nick looks back on his address to the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley, entitled, “Milton Friedman isn’t running the show anymore. And therein lies the problem.” Nick’s address reviewed six commonsense recommendations to broadly improve American society and our economy, concepts he first offered on The Far Middle in October 2021. Nick asks if we’ve made progress on these proposals this past year, or rather regressed, and then closes by tying them to Milton Friedman.

STORMRIDER: "A Historical Novel Based on True Events" by Gordon L. "Box" BocherThis is a historical novel which chronicles the Vietnam War and its effect upon the individuals who fought in the war and those who chose not to serve. It is definitively a first-hand account of what it was like to enter manhood in the shadow of this unpopular war. The book covers the psychological costs of combat visited upon those who fought and the damage to the psyche of those who decided that the war was not worth risking their lives to serve their country. This novel covers 12 years of military service. The last active-duty mission of the main character, Blake, was the aborted attempt to rescue 53 hostages held by Iran in April 1980. The book will inform the reader of exactly what happened in the Iranian desert on that fateful day. Finally the book describes the main character's struggle to overcome posttraumatic stress from a year's worth of combat. The fact that 40 members of his squadron have their names etched in the Memorial wall in Washington never leaves him.I was born in New York City and raised on Long island. I spent four years at Marietta College and two years doing graduate work at Ohio State University. I gave up my 2-S deferment and joined the United States Air Force in January 1968. I successfully completed navigator training in September 1969. I had orders to fly the AC-119G gunship but I contracted cancer and was retired from the Air Force. I spent eighteen months recuperating from several operations. I gave up a 100% disability and rejoined the Air Force as a rated navigator. I flew 177 combat missions as a fire control officer aboard the AC – 130A gunship. From 1973- 1977, I taught celestial navigation. From there I spent the next three years in Air Force rescue. I left the Air Force in 1980 and after a brief stint in the private sector, I worked as an air-traffic control specialist for the next twenty-seven years. I am married for over thirty-five years and have a step-daughter and a son. Awards: • The Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak leaf cluster • The Air Medal with seven Oak leaf clusters • The Air Force Commendation Medal • The Purple Heart • The Conspicuous Service from Gov. Every year new communicators join the workforce—which is desperately needed. But what are the college communication curricula that are preparing them for the world we have today and the world we'll have tomorrow? This episode looks at what today's students are learning and how are they preparing for careers in communications.   Episode Guest(s): Dr. Cody Clemens' primary research and teaching foci are in Health, Organizational, Relational, and Gender Communication. His scholarly work has appeared in the Journal of Communication Pedagogy, Health Communication, Ohio Communication Journal, The Forensic of Pi Kappa Delta, and Carolinas Communication Annual. He also published a book chapter in The Handbook of Communication Training (Routledge) with his co-authors on Belbin Team Roles. His doctoral dissertation research focused on the experiences and identities of individuals living with the chronic autoimmune disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Dr. Clemens actively presents and participates at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry Conference, the International Association of Autoethnography and Narrative Inquiry Conference, the National Communication Association Conference, and the Ohio Communication Association Conference.   For his research and service, he has been awarded numerous awards from institutions like Bowling Green State University and the National Communication Association's Training & Development Division. He is currently the Vice President for the Ohio Communication Association, and he serves as a reviewer for the Ohio Communication Journal, Journal of Autoethnography, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, and Women & Language.   He has Ph.D. in Health & Organizational Communication from Bowling Green State University, an MA in Corporate Communication, Duquesne University; and a BA-Organizational Communication & Public Relations, from Marietta College where he serves as an Assistant Professor. And, he and I are both members of the MCAA Board of Directors.   In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his many horses, and his dog, Betty.     Key Takeaways:   Careers in communication can play a key role in promoting important public health initiatives.   We should approach different generation cohorts because they have different expectations for media consumption, different levels of digital literacy, and digital access.   Communication curricula should include helping students in ways such as standing up for themselves and what they believe in, knowing the difference between credible and identifying non-critical research, and ethical and unethical behavior.   They also need to help create powerful leaders, writers, readers, and impactful communicators.   Future college communication curricula should focus on the developing strategic digital world. However, they should not lose sight of core elements like interpersonal communication, ethics, and being good colleagues and team members.   Managing new communication graduates requires listening, mentorship programs, challenges, and socialization opportunities.       Useful Links:   Dr. Cody Clemens cmc004@marietta.edu   https://www.linkedin.com/in/codymclemens/   Marietta College https://marietta.org   Connect Four Panel Discussion on the Marietta College Communication Department https://youtu.be/tQVSBP71beQ

"The first DeRolph decision came down in 1997, so we've been all those decades without a funding formula. That's why I ran for the statehouse. A retired teacher, I saw the impacts of what was happening when things were getting cut and the damage it was doing to our students.""The idea was to develop a plan that was fair for all of Ohio's children, fair for all of Ohio's districts, and fair for the state of Ohio."Featured guest: Former State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson)Dr. John Patterson represented Ohio's 99th House district from January 1, 2013 until December 31, 2020, when he left office due to term limits. Patterson earned his bachelor's degree from Marietta College, his master's degree in political science from Ohio University and his Ph.D. in education from Kent State University. Patterson taught U.S. history at Jefferson Area High School for 29 years prior to his retirement in June, 2012. He has also instructed undergraduate courses at Kent State and  taught at the graduate level for Gannon University. While at Jefferson Area High School, Patterson served as the Model United Nations advisor, and coached girls basketball, boys baseball, golf and, for the last 12 seasons of his career, boys' cross-country. He was very active in the Jefferson Area Teachers' Association, serving as chief negotiator for his union. Patterson is now a member of OEA-Retired. In this episode:"The funding for new buildings and such, you can put a check mark there; we're making great progress. The Fair School Funding Plan incorporates a 60-40 split between property wealth and income levels to determine local capacity. 10:00 - Providing direct funding for vouchers and charters under the Fair School Funding Plan, rather than deducting resources from local public school districts. 11:15 - The years of work to develop the Fair School Funding Plan in partnership with State Rep. When Coach VanderWal took over in Marietta, the Pioneer program had just concluded a 5-year run with a combined record of 32-96. After 3 difficult years to begin his tenure, Coach VanderWal led his 2010-2011 squad to a record of 27-4 (15-3 OAC)! The Pioneers won their first Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title in 36 seasons and the school claimed it's first ever OAC Tournament title. From 20010-11 through 2019-20 Marietta Basketball is 227-62 (.785). They claimed 5 consecutive OAC titles between 2014-15 and 2018-19 (the only school in the history of the OAC to claim at least a share of five titles in a row). Marietta has made 8 NCAA Tournament appearances in the past 10 years with 4 Sweet Sixteen appearances and 2 trips to the Elite Eight. I sat down with my brother, James Metcalf, SVP Operations at Intrepid Directional Drilling. During CV-19, we have seen the market (basically) crumble. An industry that has been hit particularly hard is oil and gas. James entered the industry in 2015, when the industry was struggling. He will admit that today is nothing like when he graduated, but he still entered the workforce during a questionable time (in oil and gas). He went from a secured opportunity to having to get back out there and market himself to land a job after he graduated. James has an interesting story. He spent his last two years of high school at a prestigious high school, Saint Andrew's School in Delaware, which provided him a unique academic opportunity along with the ability to excel athletically. After Saint Andrew's, James found himself deciding between 3 institutions – Syracuse, The Naval Academy, and Marietta College. Phenomenal institutions. He ultimately enrolled at Marietta College because of the academic rigor, a Petroleum Engineering department, and a competitive crew team. James will touch on his college experience, along with internships, and the importance of them throughout his college career. James will discuss his sacrifices and the obstacles (both self inflicted and out of his control) upon graduation. Ultimately, he worked hard, and despite a long journey, at 25 (turning 26 May 1), he came out on the other side being successful and fulfilled with his career and life.

Certain neurological conditions, including stroke, brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease, cause muscles in the head and neck to have decreased strength, range of motion, coordination and/or speed, which can result in dysphagia, the medical term for difficulty or discomfort when swallowing. While it is a common post-stroke symptom, the severity of dysphagia can range from minimal to profound impairments, and may require the temporary or permanent placement of a feeding tube. This treatment team includes a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and a nutritionist who work together to create a proper nutrition plan.  SLP: Lauren Stermer Holdaway, SLP at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Ocala received her bachelor’s degree from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio in 2006 and then went on to earn her master’s degree in speech-language pathology from the University of Montevallo in 2011.
