American entrepreneurship had been on a 40-year decline. But 2020 is the year that turned around; entrepreneurship is on the rise once again. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, aspiring entrepreneurs filed paperwork to start 5.4 million new businesses in 2021. This recent surge in entrepreneurship has been disproportionally attributed to women and people of color, so for this special two-part series we're honing in on an intersection of those two identities: Black women. In the second of our two-part “Black Women Entrepreneurs” series, available in your feed now, we're broadening the lens to dig into the cultural and business forces behind the rising tide of Black entrepreneurship and the marketplace changes needed to further empower its growth. Carla joins innovative business leader Melissa Bradley in Washington, D.C. to discuss 1863 Ventures, a national business development nonprofit accelerator and venture capital fund for historically underestimated individuals. The organization is on a mission to generate 100 billion dollars of wealth for founders by 2030. Through 1863 Ventures, Melissa is working to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem where Black founders, including the rising tide of Black women business owners, can thrive. Helping women and People of Color achieve their entrepreneurial goals has been Melissa Bradley's driving force throughout her career. Along the way she founded 1863 Ventures, a nonprofit that helps underserved entrepreneurs move from high potential to high growth, and she co-founded a separate platform that provides support for small- to medium-sized businesses. On this episode, she sits down with Women on the Move's Sam Saperstein to discuss these two ventures, the lessons she's learned, and her progress towards creating $100 billion in new wealth for the new majority by 2030. Empowering women, black and brown entrepreneurs Melissa first realized that entrepreneurship was a pathway to financial success when she was bartending as a student at Georgetown University. When she returned to Georgetown as a professor, a student project to organize an entrepreneurial summit in Anacostia quickly grew, eventually becoming 1863 Ventures. The organization is dedicated to accelerating black and brown entrepreneurs from high potential to high growth, through rigorous leadership training and strategic market access. A key differentiator is their focus on ongoing operations for established companies, rather than startups. Their methodology was proven out by the high survival rate of their companies during the pandemic. Following the success of 1863 Ventures, Melissa co-founded Ureeka in 2018. Ureeka offers “always-on coaching” to minority entrepreneurs, with 24-7 access to peers and colleagues via an app or website. “We essentially partner with accelerators and incubators all over the country and now corporations and others who want to help women and entrepreneurs of color and provide a scalable platform,” Melissa tells Sam. 1863 was Ureeka's first customer. After businesses “graduate” from 1863, they receive ongoing support through Ureeka. At Ureeka, Melissa and her team “made a commitment that every conversation, we would solve a single problem,” rather than offering theoretical advice Qualities of a successful entrepreneur The environment for entrepreneurs has changed in just the past decade. Ten years ago, Melissa notes, there was a stigma attached to entrepreneurship—that people starting businesses were either crazy or had graduated from Harvard. Today, “there's diversity in who shows up,” she says. “I think people are much more open to asking for help because they don't worry that people are going to make fun of them.” In addition to the three most common mistakes entrepreneurs make, Melissa shares the three key qualities entrepreneurs must have to be successful. The first is blind optimism, “if you believe and see it for yourself, then go for it.” The second is a dose of tenacity and resilience, she says, noting that many people are going to tell you no along the way. The third quality is self-awareness and the ability to recognize “when you're not the right person to do certain things” and then move on to the next big problem that needs solving.

Due to the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the protests that originally broke out in response to the killing of George Floyd captured on video, corporations have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to social justice causes, as well as to help struggling small businesses. Companies like Google, Facebook and Salesforce have committed grants and funds to increase entrepreneurial opportunities to people who traditionally have been shut out of billions of dollars represented by the top venture capital firms – Women, Black and Latinx entrepreneurs. And the company that Facebook and Salesforce chose to facilitate their SMB grant programs was Ureeka, a startup founded by Melissa Bradley, David Jakubowski and Rob Gatto, that provides mentorship and guidance through their platform to help their community membership of entrepreneurs’ get answers to their most pressing questions. I recently had a LinkedIn Live conversation with Ureeka cofounder Melissa Bradley to learn more about Ureeka’s mission to help underrepresented entrepreneurs succeed, and her own recent experiences raising $8.6M in VC money. Below is an edited transcript from a portion of our conversation. Click on the embedded SoundCloud player to hear the full conversation.

How much of our destinies do we control? How much is predetermined? And how much do the environments around us play a role in who we can be or what we can do? As entrepreneurs, we like to think that we own our destinies, that we are 100% in charge. But the real world has a habit of reminding us that dreams are just that – dreams – and not everyone will see the same vision that we do. “I walked in [to SMBA] and I was ready to apply for a loan and made my pitch to score, and the woman said to me, ‘Yeah, I don't think this is going to work. You have three strikes against you: You're a woman, you're in debt, and I don't know any successful black women in financial services, so I think you should do something else.” That's Melissa Bradley, the cofounder at Ureeka, a company on a mission to democratize economic opportunity for underrepresented entrepreneurs. She has always dreamed big. But it wasn't until her dreams started to expand beyond what traditional society could offer her that she realized in order to create her personal destiny, she'd have to change reality for everyone else in the process. --- Learn more about The Journey at mission.org/thejourney. The Journey is sponsored by our friends at Salesforce Essentials. We use Salesforce Essentials every day and it's part of our own business journey. Essentials combines sales and service tools in a single app to help small businesses win customers and keep them happy. It's a difficult topic but one which millions of people all over the world are contending with right this minute. It's a secret most of the time, but the most important task is not in exposing the secret, but in healing, and not just healing but in learning to thrive. Our guest today, Melissa Bradley, is an expert on sexual trauma with twenty-seven years experience in both clinical and investigative work in the field of sexual trauma. She's taught more than 50,000 professionals in America, Canada and Central America in her two self-developed programs, “The Psychology of Resilience: A Multi-modal Approach to Thriving Using the Heroic Journey” and “Three Stages of Healing: Counseling Victims of Sexual Trauma.” Instead of living a lifetime filled with fear and reenactment, she teaches that survivors of sexual trauma can become thrivers whose lives are rich, peaceful and meaningful. If you are a survivor or know someone else who is, don't miss this show!
