American investigative journalist
POPULARITY
Sarah got her meds adjusted and she is riding the high of that sweet testosterone that is making her feel some kind of way. All of the sudden she isn't so judgy towards men. What's up with that??? We hear about the amazing investigative journalist that blew the lid of off of mistreatment for mentally ill patients and people unfairly placed into mental hospitals in the 1800s. Pittsburgh's own Nelly Bly is our badass bitch of the week with her moxie, courage, and fortitude, and we are hoping for more of that today. We learn why the US gave 11 bison to the Canadian first nations, and how it's meant to make up for past harms. We discuss the Oscars, why Sarah didn't know how to feel about Kieran Culkin's acceptance speech and why Demi Moore's movie Substance disturbed her. We hear why the eyeballs actually are windows to the soul, or at least the brain, and how they can reveal disease.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Cancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money.
Earning their chops in medicine shows and with minstrel troupes in the late 1890s, brothers Frank and Bert Leighton wrote and/or arranged many ragtime pieces for use in vaudeville.Among their work was a 1912 version of “Frankie and Johnny,” penned with partner Ren Shields, that would set the tone for many future renditions of the song, including a monster hit a decade and half later for Charlie Poole and his North Carolina Ramblers. The song that Poole and his pals released as “Leaving Home” on Columbia Records in May 1927 already was pretty well known by musicians of the day.For instance, on the same label in the same year, popular band leader Ted Lewis recorded the same song with the title "Frankie and Johnny: You'll Miss Me in the Days to Come.” Lewis included only the chorus and not the verses. But it was a half dozen years before that that the first American recording of “Frankie and Johnny” was made by New Orleans-born Al Bernard, one of the first white singers to record blues tunes. (W.C. Handy credited Bernard, in fact, with helping his own career by recording a number of his songs, notably “St. Louis Blues.”)Whew! That's a lot of intersecting stories here, but let's roll it back to Charlie Poole and the Leighton boys. Kinney Rorer, in his seminal biography Rambling Blues: the Life & Songs of Charlie Poole, notes that the banjoist closely follows the version of “Leaving Home” that the Leighton brothers created, though there are some differences in Charlie's chorus.About the LeightonsNow, no one knows just how Poole learned that rendition, but the Leightons were pretty influential. Among the ragtime pieces they wrote was "There's A Dark Man Coming With A Bundle” and "Far Away in Honolulu (They've got the tango craze).” Their most memorable and influential song was "Steamboat Bill" in 1910, a parody of best-selling “Ballad of Casey Jones,” which had itself been based on a song from the Leightons' vaudeville routine. Arthur Collins recorded “Steamboat Bill” in 1911, which would inspire Charles Reisner to write a movie for comedian Buster Keaton called “Steamboat Bill Jr.,” which released as a silent film in 1928.That same year, Walt Disney found inspiration in the movie and in the song to create the first synchronized cartoon with sound, Steamboat Willie.Back to Johnny and His Murderous MistressAll the Frankie and Johnny variations were based on an actual murder. Here are the facts of the case:At 2 in the morning of Oct. 15, 1899, at an apartment building located at 212 Targee Street in St. Louis, 22-year-old Frankie Baker encountered her 17-year-old lover Allen (Albert) Britt as he stumbled back from a cakewalk in the company of a prostitute named Nelly Bly. Albert and Nellie had just won a prize in a slow-dancing contest, but Frankie didn't feel like celebrating. On the contrary, she felt like shooting her lover in the stomach, which she did. Albert died in City Hospital four days later. At trial, Frankie pleaded self-defense at her trial — she claimed Britt had attacked her with a knife prior to the shooting — and she was found not guilty.Weeks after the murder, St. Louis songwriter Bill Dooley composed “Frankie Killed Allen,” a tune that gained some currency. The first published version appeared in 1904, credited to Hughie Cannon (also remembered for his better-known composition “Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey”).That brings up to 1912 and the Frank and Bert Leighton version entitled “Frankie and Johnny” (because, well, “Johnny” apparently flowed better than “Allen” or “Albert”). Since then, there have been more than 250 versions of “Frankie and Johnny” recorded, not to mention several film adaptation over the years. Our Take on the TuneWhen Jack Nuckols switches from drums to fiddle, it often brings back lots of old memories of music parties 50 years ago. This is another song that Dave Peyton, Joe Dobbs and Charlie Bowen first heard at those parties when the good old Kentucky Foothill Ramblers, led by H. David Holbrook, could play a whole evening full of string band songs from the 1920s and ‘30s.This track is from last week's Flood affair, when the group's old band mate Paul Martin and his mandolin sat in with current Floodsters Charlie and Jack, Danny Cox, Randy Hamilton and Sam St. Clair. In the late 19th century rumors had been spreading about the deplorable conditions in the countries mental institutions. A young woman, journalist Nelly Bly would fake insanity, have herself committed to the most notoriously dangerous asylum, and report her findings. This act of bravery would shine a light on the horrific conditions, and would create what we know now as investigative journalism.

Hello Strangers!Being Dead Serious podcast episode 40:10 days in a Madhouse: the Nellie Bly story is now available.Ten Days in A Madhouse is the true account of investigative journalist Nellie Bly's confinement inside an insane asylum. In 1887 the young female reporter entered the asylum under the guise of insanity to investigate rumors of brutality and neglect at the infamous Blackwell's Island Insane Asylum in New York City.Join us as we investigate how one courageous and determined woman risked her life in order to bring justice to those in need.Stay Strange!
In 1887 a 23 year old young woman named Elizabeth Cochrane arrived at the New York World newspaper asking for a job. At that time, the newspapers didn't hire women for serious reporting. But the Chief Editor took pity on her and asked her if she was willing to go undercover and report on Blackwell Island Insane Asylum. He told her she would have no contacts inside and would receive no help until after ten days inside, at which time the3y would send an attorney for her release. Blackwell's Island was known for housing the criminally insane as well as innocents who were declared insane. Elizabeth agreed to the deal and went in under the name Nelly Bly. The rest was history. She became the 1st female investigative reporter for a major newspaper and her fame spread round the world- even more so when she piloted a balloon solo around the world. O týchto a ďalších súvisiacich otázkach sa budeme rozprávať s psychiatrom a prednostom psychiatrickej kliniky Rooseveltovej nemocnice v Banskej Bystrici Michalom Patarákom.

Episode one ninety three - part one Jenn sat down with Maya Rodale, author of THE MAD GIRLS OF NEW YORK, a lively and entertaining fictionalized account of the career of Nelly Bly. Bly, as an undercover reporter, spent ten days committed to Blackwell's, a notoriously cruel and oppressive asylum, to expose the truth to the public.

Tyler Henry, the talented medium who speaks to dead people fills notebooks with scribbles. It helps him connect. Hundreds of years ago a young reported named Nelly Bly was famous for connecting to her readers by putting herself in the position to report on unseen corners of her world. If you haven't already heard the raw tape of my fangirling all over Tyler, I share it here again...with new audio from historical romance writer Maya Rodale and her latest Nelly Bly story. Thanks for listening.
In 1880s New York, the last thing any woman wanted was to be committed to the infamous lunatic asylum at Blackwell's Island. Except for Nelly Bly, investigative reporter for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. In this episode, we continue Bly's personal account of her time as an inmate within those walls.

May 3, 2021- Who was the Roman general Marc Antony before he became a legend, before he rose as a man in full, forever linked in history with Cleopatra? We'll meet a boy struggling to redeem his disgraced family name in this week's novel, Antonius: Son of Rome. It's book one in Brook Allen's Antonius Trilogy, followed by Antonius: Second in Command and the conclusion, Antonius: Soldier of Fate. Brook Allen introduces us to this historic figure before sculptors and Shakespeare got their hands on him, sharing her passion for ancient history, and redeeming a man whose enemies have had their say for 2,000 years. Brook Allen earned a B.A. from Asbury University and a Master's at Hollins University with an emphasis in Ancient Roman studies, so she has the grounding in facts to really bring this story to life. Visit her at BrookAllenAuthor.com and find her on Twitter or Facebook. Special thanks to Tonya Mitchell for recommending The Antonius Trilogy. You can find that interview in the archives, where we discuss her Nelly Bly novel, A Feigned Madness.

This episode of Hip Squared is a crossover with Armchair Apocrypha! Andrew and Rachel join John in American Fantastic Studio, and Troy talks to John too.First, John talks about Chapo Trap House, a scathing political satire podcast, along with their book, The Chapo Guide to Revolution: A Manifesto Against Logic, Facts and Reason. This podcast is hilariously entertaining, but nearly nihilistic in its outlook. It’s also very left-wing. The members of the podcast are extremely profane, and their book is too. If you’d like a political podcast from a very different perspective, they’re well worth a listen. Then Andrew talks about the recent Hearthstone controversy. Ng Wai Chung won a Hearthstone tournament and used his platform to voice his support for the Hong Kong protests against Beijing. Blizzard, who has a heavy footprint in China, took away the player’s winnings. After a fierce protest, his suspension was reduced to six months. This new video game controversy reflects a defiant political perspective expressed in an old fashioned way.Rachel talks about the podcast My Favorite Murder. This is a comedy true crime podcast starring Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Karen and Georgia talk about some of the most infamous murders in history, including some with happy endings, at least when a case is solved. Their humor leavens the heavy subject matter. If you’re a fan of true crime, or just want to see why this is the most popular podcast genre, this is a good show to start with.Last but not least, Troy talks about the self-published novel Redirected by Pat Burton. This book is written by a teacher about a teacher that wakes up from a coma and loses his memory. He slowly unravels a mystery about a secret government program, and learns an agent has been sent to track him. It’s a slow-boiling thriller and an impressive debut.Produced by Maplex Monk.Make sure to listen to John on the episode of Armchair Apocrypha titled American Apocrypha. John talks about the 19th and 20th century feminist, journalist and adventurer Nelly Bly (as featured in The Lost Journals of Nelly Bly: Clash of the Kaiju written by John), Andrew discusses a mysterious talking mongoose on the Isle of Man, and Rachael delves into the sordid history of The Peoples' Temple and Jonestown. Det er mange fantastiske historiske kvinnelige rollemodeller, and every once and awhile Ill bring one to the TGIM table. Ukens woman in history is Elizabeth Cochran (1864-1922) fra Pennsylvania, hun var en amerikansk journalist og pioneer innen undersøkende journalistikk. Hun gikk under pseudonumet Nelly Bly. @powerladiespodcast
Sweet reboots are made of these. Who am I to disagree? Well...kind of the premise of the show. This week Tanner is rebooting Sucker Punch. They like about 15% of it but really need to reskin and recontextualize a lot of it so that it doesn't end up infantilizing or exploiting the women it thinks it's empowering. But Lindsay can help give it new life by adding in Nelly Bly, a riot grrrl soundtrack, and a seven metaphor smoothie. This week's friendship promo is @MyFavoritePKMN! Nelly Bly, Katherine Graham, Marvel Cooke, Lorena Hickok, Joan Didion: they wrote stories that sometimes only women could write, elevating women's voices and revealing otherwise unknown details of our society. We are going to (of course) discuss a brief history of women in journalism, and share stories about four of our favorites. Allegra also shares some book recommendations, and we (try to) end on a positive note, analyzing these women's long lasting and beneficial impact on history and writing. Intrepid and important, these real-life women writers have their stories told in some novels we recommend in this episode. This episode was recorded in Galveston, where we were attending the Texas Distance Learning Association Conference. Books we recommend: Woman 99, The Address, The Dollhouse, White Houses. and Slouching Toward Bethlehem. Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook @professhers. Email us at professhers@gmail.com. Written and presented by Allegra Davis Hanna and Misty Wilson-Mehrtens.
Joseph Pulitzer’s New York newspaper, The World, would transform American media and make him wealthy, admired and feared. Throughout his four decades as a reporter and publisher, he created a powerful artistic vehicle that spoke to an unprecedented number of readers. Towards the end of his life, both sickly and blind, Pulitzer’s commitment to fearless reporting would tested by the most powerful person in American life. Pulitzer is an American icon who spoke of “fake news” over one hundred years ago. He fought the dangers that the suppression of news had for a democracy long before our present threats to press freedom. While he is remembered for the prizes that bear his name, his own heroic battles in the face of grave illness and Presidential ire have been forgotten as has the artistry and game changing originality he brought to newspapers. How did Joseph Pulitzer, once a penniless young Jewish immigrant from Hungary, come to challenge a popular president and fight for freedom of the press as essential to our democracy? Adam Driver narrates the film. Liev Schreiber is the voice of Pulitzer. Tim Blake Nelson is the voice of Teddy Roosevelt and Rachel Brosnahan is the voice of Nelly Bly. Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People Director and Producer Oren Rudavsky is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and several National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Arts grants. Rudavsky produced Witness Theater a film chronicling a Self help organized workshop between holocaust survivors and high-school students which will premiere in 2019. His previous films Colliding Dreams co-directed with Joseph Dorman, and The Ruins of Lifta co-directed with Menachem Daum, were released theatrically in 2016. Colliding Dreams was broadcast on PBS in May 2018. Director Oren Rudavsky joins us for a conversation on the indispensable role Joseph Pulitzer played in the development of America’s crown jewel, freedom of the press. Tom Simoneau has brought two guests from Treasury Wine Estates, Tamara Stanfill, PR Manager and Ming Alterman, Director of Digital. First, Tom mentions the talking wine bottles, which Steve promises we will get into, in detail. But first Steve asks them to talk about Treasury Wine Estates. It is based in Australia and they own a lot of historic wineries in California like Beringer, Sterling and Chateau St. Jean. They also own brands in Australia like 19 Crimes. Tom’s most fun wine of the year last year was 19 Crimes. Tamara explains that the convicts that were shipped to Australia are featured on the bottle labels. The convicts, if convicted of one of 19 crimes, were offered execution or to be shipped to Australia. In the studio they play the label of the Shiraz bottle with John O’Reilly and his crime. It’s “AR” for Augmented Reality. When you put your phone near the bottle, the label comes to life. You have to download the app at Living Wine Label. First they pour a Chardonnay. The "Embrazened" line celebrates accomplished women, this one features Celia Cruz, the great singer. When you put your phone up to the label, you see a little video of Celia Cruz talking about how she was the first woman on her recording label and went on to become the most popular salsa recording artist of the last century. They also have Josephine Baker and Nelly Bly on Living Wine Labels, which will be appearing in wine stores soon. They also taste a canned wine. Dan Berger tells that canned wine was first tried in the 1940s and today it is making a comeback. Steve asks Ming to explain how to make the Living Wine Labels work, he explains you need to download their app then just hold the phone up to the label. The one called Walking Dead will look like a zombie attack that will break the screen of your phone (but not really!). They are tasting the Walking Dead 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. Steve gives livingwinelabels dot com, to download the app. One of the Beringer labels shows an 1876-era newspaper about the Beringer brothers who founded the winery. Next they taste the Beringer Boubon barrel aged chardonnay. That aging gives the wine a richer character. Dan says it's an interesting concept wine for the millennial buyer. It is a big rich bold wine, soft and very richly flavored. The aftertaste leans on the barrel component, which is more then he prefers. Tom Simoneau says it almost has a Cola flavored finish. Tom notes that at this time of year, the winemakers are busy with harvest and crush, so the PR and marketing people like Tamara and Ming can come on the show today. Tom is watching his own vineyard right now and is carefully monitoring the Brix values of his grapes and may harvest next Tuesday. He says the roads will be full of grape trucks now.
