Safari (Medicine) est un classique d'Ali dans son mode Sonrai, sa voix chargée est soulignée par un rythme de calebasse propulsif et le ronronnement fantomatique d'une flûte peul, alors qu'Ali se vante d'avoir le « médicament », les conseils nécessaires pour guérir le « mauvais comportement ». Le riffing à une corde de la guitare djerkel, utilisée dans les cérémonies de possession des esprits, est transposé sur une guitare électrique aux sonorités ouvertes.Sur Chérie, l'un des trois titres où Ali est rejoint par la grande diva wassoulou Oumou Sangaré, le kamelngoni - harpe de chasseur - donne un merveilleux swing élastique au riff glissant de la guitare d'Ali, tandis que les deux voix se répondent en parfaite osmose. Sambadio, une chanson peul en l'honneur des agriculteurs, se décline en deux versions : acoustique, avec une magnifique ambiance de feu de camp, alimentée par le pincement insistant du ngoni des maestros Bassekou Kouyaté et Mama Sissoko ; électrique, avec un merveilleux arrangement de saxo jazzy du sideman de James Brown, Pee Wee Ellis. Sadjona (Le poids du destin) est une chanson traditionnelle pour les chasseurs Wassoulou, spontanément réadaptée par Oumou Sangaré comme un chant de louange à Ali pendant un contrôle du microphone. Le groove du kamel ngoni donne un élan fantastique à l'urgence invocatoire de sa voix, avant qu'une partie de saxophone obsédante ne vienne flotter dans le mix, dans l'un de ces moments musicaux inspirés et accidentels que l'on a le privilège d'entendre. Ces chansons, qui font partie de ce que le producteur Nick Gold décrit comme des « archives précieuses et privées », ont été révélées par Ali avec parcimonie, parfois apparemment à contrecœur, à Gold sur une période de 25 ans.Ali savait exactement ce qu'il faisait : en transmettant progressivement ces chansons à Gold, elles atteindraient un jour, si Dieu le veut, un public mondial ; mais même dans ce cas, Ali aimait garder les choses sur le fil du rasoir. Plusieurs de ces chansons ont été diffusées de manière tout à fait spontanée entre des prises sur d'autres chansons. Maggie speaks with Nick Gold (former head of World Circuit Records) about the genesis of the phenomenon of the Buena Vista Social and it's 25th Anniversary release.  ‘Buena Vista Social Club' is both the name given to this extraordinary group of musicians and the album, recorded in just seven days in 1996 in Havana's 1950s vintage EGREM studios. It was clear from the atmosphere of the recording sessions that something very special was taking place. The London-based producer has a nose for talent but maintains being allowed to work with such artists makes him the lucky one.  In 2018, World Circuit merged with BMG and together they recently released remastered versions of four of their cornerstone albums:  Ali Farka Touré's Savane, Omara Portuondo's Buena Vista Social Club Presents, Radio Tarifa's Rumba Argelina and Guillermo Portabales' El Carretero.  Gold reflects on three decades of helping to get great music from West Africa and Cuba to western audiences even, as he says, the musicians in question didn't need reminding it could travel! "Musicians from Cuba and Mali value their own music, they know it's incredibly important. It's not like they need validation from outside." He also talks to us about the magic of recording Buena Vista Social Club in Egrem studios in Havana in 1996 and driving Oumou Sangaré's pink car on the streets of Bamako. And he might never have recorded Buena Vista Social Club, the best-selling world music record ever, had it not been for Ali Farka Touré whom he met in London in 1987 when Touré came to record his debut album with World Circuit. The two men would go on to have a long and fruitful collaboration. Gold "facilitated" the Grammy-award winning Talking Timbuktu with Ry Cooder in 1994 and which helped establish World Circuit as a big player in the recording business. But Gold says the Mali bluesman also acted as a kind of talent scout (A&R), introducing him to new music from all over West Africa. And, thankfully, Cuba. "It was because of Ali that I worked with Toumani Djibaté, he introduced us to Oumou Sangaré, to Dimi Mint Abba from Mauritania. And he encouraged me to listen to Cuban music so he was very important as an unofficial A&R man as well. And a real inspiration." À la tête de l’équipe cubaine figure Eliades Ochoa, le chanteur-guitariste au chapeau de cow-boy qui chante Chan Chan au sein du Buena Vista Social Club. The challenges of public speaking, glossophobia (the fear of public speaking) and what it takes to become an in-demand thought leader and public speaker with the Managing Director of Speaker's Corner, Nick Gold. It became quite a sexy thing to be discussing ideas and concepts from experience you've had listening to speakers. Anxiety and nerves have always been a challenge for new and experienced public speakers. One of the key elements to overcoming this, according to Nick, is creating a routine that takes you away from overthinking those nerves. > What you have to do is embrace those nerves and not feed them - to not feed that feeling inside of you. Graham and Nick also talk about the “whys” of giving a speech and how important content is to deliver a speech that drives impact. > I suppose my catchphrase is very much around its speaker understanding that they're not the stars, the audience are the stars. And it's that shift to understanding that the best speech - that kind of you could ever get, it's not how you perceive the speech to be, it's what people take when they leave that room.
