What to listen for:“The dogs are so good at what they do, it's brain-boggling.”Today, 2/3 of our hosts, Robin Greubel and Crystal Wing, welcome Katylynn Sloan, a chemist with the U.S. Secret Service, to explore the eye-opening intersection of science and canine detection work. With a PhD in chemistry and years in explosives research, Katylynn brings a fresh lens to how odor behaves, how dogs detect it, and why context matters. She explains how high vapor pressure substances like nitroglycerin contaminate everything they touch, and why containment protocols must evolve. From calibrating training aids to understanding the unexpected behavior of odor in vehicles, Katylynn stresses the importance of operational realism. Dogs, she explains, learn expectations. If training doesn't reflect real-world scenarios—like suicide vests or buried explosives—dogs might miss critical cues. She calls for more collaborative studies in generalization, where the difference in one chemical compound might be enough for a dog to disregard an otherwise familiar substance.Katylynn's insights aren't just academic—they're actionable. She champions “train how you operate,” emphasizes the need for diverse training aids, and highlights the gaps in disciplines like HRD, narcotics, and electronics detection. Most importantly, she reminds us: dogs are really good. But it's the handlers—those who know their dog's tail twitch or sniff shift means something—that bring science to life.Science and scent don't compete. They collaborate. And as Katylynn shows, better understanding leads to smarter training and safer communities. Are treatments in Alternative Medicine such as Acupuncture compatible with Christianity? Dr. Prather answers that question.  In this episode, you'll discover:—The difference between Structure-Function Health Care as practiced by Holistic Integration and the perceived definition of Alternative Medicine.—How Dr. Prather answered one woman whose pastor told her not to do Acupuncture treatments because it was associated with Buddhism.—Why Homeopathy has no religious or spiritual connotations, but includes evidence-based medicines such as Nitroglycerin.—The role of Quantum Physics as the basis of Homeopathy and why it works. —How atheists are the ones suppressing scientific advancement and knowledge today by denying scientific evidence of God. And why Israel is seeing more scientific advances and new inventions than any other country.—Why the Disease Care Model that is the basis of our health care system is NOT a Christian-based system. And why the philosophy of "modern medicine" is actually an ancient system based on pagan religion.—The connection between the ancient Asclepius cult, modern humanism, and our health care system today. And the Abraham Flexner report (written by a passionate opponent of Christianity) in 1910 that forms the basis of our health care system.—How the philosophy that you should ONLY use pharmaceuticals to heal is ludicrous. And why Dr. Prather advocates an 80%-20% balance between Structure-Function Care and Disease Care.—The Asclepian philosophy that formed the American Medical Association to combat Homeopathic Medicine.—Why Dr. Prather adheres to the health care philosophy known as the Physiologists, who were the ones who basically came up with all of our blood tests and lab tests.http://www.

In this episode of The PODdoctors podcast, Dr. Damien Dauphinee, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, and Dr. Raafae Hussain, a fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon, dive deep into a lesser-known yet intriguing condition called chilblains. Characterized by itchy, red, and tender skin lesions, chilblains is often exacerbated by cold, damp conditions, without necessitating freezing temperatures. Leveraging their practical experience, Dr. Dauphinee and Dr. Hussain delineate the distinction between chilblains and related conditions like Raynaud's phenomenon and frostbite. The doctors also provide tips for prevention and treatment, including wearing thick socks, using topical medications, and avoiding hot foot baths.Quotes"When chilblains occurs, you can put your feet in lukewarm water for a certain period of time. Not blazing hot, not boiling. You just want them to be lukewarm. If this is a more chronic problem, it flares up every couple months, or during the cold weather, your doctor might prescribe something topical.” -Dr. Raafae Hussain“Between chilblains and frostbite, the difference is temperature. So it doesn't require a frigid 20, you know, in the teens Fahrenheit to cause chilblains. It could, like we talked about, be in the forties outside.” -Dr. Damien DauphineeTop Takeaways:Chilblains: a condition characterized by itchy, red, and tender skin lesions, often exacerbated by cold, damp conditions, without necessitating freezing temperatures.Individuals with a history of Raynaud's or who are smokers may be more susceptible to developing chilblains. While self-limiting, recommendations include lukewarm foot baths, topical steroids, or vasodilators like topical Nitroglycerin for acute cases. Systemic medications are considered for more chronic issues.Appropriate insulative clothing and thick socks are key preventive measures during cold weather, especially for slender individuals who may be more prone to the condition.Patients with sensory loss due to neuropathy should take extra caution when using heat-related treatments to prevent accidental burns. What You Will Learn:What is chilblains? The difference between chilblains and frostbiteTreatment options and prevention tipsNeuropathy ConsiderationResources:Visit our website: https://thepoddoctors.com/

Contributor: Aaron Lessen MD Educational Pearls: SCAPE (Sympathetic Crashing Acute Pulmonary Edema), formerly known as flash pulmonary edema, is a life-threatening condition due to a sudden sympathetic surge that leads to hypertensive heart failure, pulmonary edema, hypoxia, and respiratory distress.  The initial treatment for SCAPE stabilization is BiPAP to assist with ventilation. Pharmacological treatment for SCAPE is best achieved with high-dose nitroglycerin (HDN), which induces venodilation and redistributes pulmonary edema. Dosing should be high; boluses of HDN are given at doses of 1-2 mg every 3-5 minutes vs. infusions at 200-400 mcg/min then titrating down. HDN leads to reduced intubations, less need for ICU admission, and shortened length of hospital stay in patients with SCAPE. References Agrawal N, Kumar A, Aggarwal P, Jamshed N. Come and listen to a story about how a group of talented experts have developed a credit card sized kit that can save people who are having a heart attack.About half of adult Canadians have at least one risk factor for a heart attack; diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, family history over the age of 55. One third of those of Canadians who have a heart attack will die before they get to medical attention. James Stewart, an engineer, says he's had “friends and relatives who have died of a heart attack. So that's been my motivation right from the beginning. I've used to carry ASA and nitroglycerin in a baggie and I've carried this in my emergency kit for a long time. And it wasn't until somebody who came with me on one of these snowmobiling excursions actually mentioned to me, ‘What are those pills you have in your emergency kit?'. And I said, ‘Well, that's ASA and Nitroglycerin'. And the fellow was studying nursing at Grant McEwen College, and he told me that, ‘Hey, those nitroglycerin pills, they will have expired. And I said, ‘Well, what do you mean?' He said, ‘Well, nitroglycerin reacts with air and light and layers itself on plastic and metal. So those pills you're packing probably hold no potency'."Stewart did some research and learned that this was all true. He needed to invent a packaging that would be stable so as to ensure that the medication remains stable for a long period of time.Stewart called up his friend, a renowned oncologist, Dr. John Mackey and the idea resonated with him too. Together, Stewart and Mackey came up with the idea of a heart attack card called SmHeartCard. It is a credit-card sized pill holder designed to save the lives of people who are having a heart attack. It holds 4ASA (81mg) and 3 Nitroglycerin (0.3 mg) pills, the standard medications given for the initial treatment of heart attack and angina. With the help of Dr. Neil Davies, a pharmacist who did the testing of the heart attack card, they proved that the pills can be stored safely for six months in the heart attack card.Learn more about the SMHeartCard at the Festival of Health on May 25. 45 years ago when this first came out, you would have through it might be considered a pretty big event as a big budget follow-up from the recent director (William Friedkin) of The Exorcist and The French Connection….and playing its lead, the star (Roy Scheider) of Jaws. :o As it turns out, it was a VERY troubled production being released by a studio which had no idea how to market it so they didn't even try.  It was considered a flop upon release but in the decades since then, there has been a growing appreciation for this high tension adventure thriller focusing on four strangers who are tasked with driving six cases of highly unstable nitroglycerin more than 200 miles through very treacherous conditions – it's a harrowing story expertly told and no, there are NO sorcerers nor any magic involved.
