This "Webcast" was recorded in Pittsburg California. I had just bought my computer a Packard Bell that cost me over 3500.00 and a plastic microphone from Walmart. Next I just had to come up with some content... LOL All I had to fall back on was talking shit to truckers on the CB, which I was very good at! Here we are some 30 years later and the doors this little "Webcast" from Pittsburg opened for me is incredible to say the least!I would like to thank the people that supported "Ride or Die" style! Will Wilkins of Nethead fame, if it was not for you sending me Paul McSween I would have never made 30 years of some of the best time a man can have without going to jail. Don't get twisted I did go to jail!!!John "Radio" Millerhttps://thejohnmillerprogram.com
Today's topic on the Neil Rogers show is computers. Hear about clock speeds, 486 vs Pentium, Packard Bell, Netscape, and more. There was a Gilbert sighting.
An airhacks.fm conversation with Billy Korando (@BillyKorando) about: Apple IIe and Packard Bell in the late 80s/early 90s, playing games like Three Stooges and Wolfenstein 3D, taking a year off after high school to work at FedEx as a package handler which motivated him to pursue higher education, his first professional job working on insurance regulation software using Java 1.4 with Apache Struts and custom frameworks, transitioning to Spring 2.5 and experiencing the XML configuration challenges, experience with the microservices hype around 2015 and learning that organizations that couldn't build good monoliths wouldn't succeed with microservices either, automated testing and JUnit 5, meeting Pratik Patel at DevNexus which led to his first devrel position at IBM, traveling extensively for conferences including J-Fall in the Netherlands, being laid off from IBM in 2021 and joining Oracle's Java team, focusing on JDK technologies like JFR, garbage collection, and project leyden, helping organize the Kansas City Developers Conference, involvement in reviving JavaOne as a standalone conference, the importance of automated testing with tools like Test Containers versus older approaches with H2 databases, the challenges of maintaining code coverage as a metric, the evolution of Java, focus on Java observability tools and performance optimization Billy Korando on twitter: @BillyKorando

Back in the mid 90's, there was nothing more exciting than getting a PC. That is, until, you realized it was purchased for homework and researching term papers on ancient Roman civilizations. And forget about asking mom and dad for PC games. That's what your SNES was for.For many young people of that era, myself included, the pack in software of our grey box PC's were the only entertainment we had until we got cash of our own. On this episode of Tales From the Bargain Bin, we chat about old computers, dive into a real Packard Bell software bundle, and discuss one of the weirdest games in my personal catalog.Starring Julian of Nerds Without Pants PodcastT: @NWPcastMy Discord: https://discord.com/invite/SdaE4atGjCMy Twitter: @agamerlooksat40My Facebook: facebook.com/agamerlooksat40My Insta: @agamerlooksat40My Patreon: patreon.com/agamerlooksat40My Email: agamerlooksat40@gmail.comMy Phone Number: Ehhhhh, not gonna happen. :-DSupport the show
Brian Douglas was “the Beyoncé of GitHub.” He jokingly crowned himself with that title during his years at that company, where he advocated for open source and a more inclusive community supporting it. His work there eventually led to his new startup, Open Sauced. Like the Queen Bey, Douglas' mission is to empower a community. In his case, he's seeking to support the open source community. With his former employer, GitHub, serving 4 million developers worldwide, the potential size of that audience is huge. In this episode of The Tech Founder Odyssey podcast, he shared why empowerment and breaking down barriers to make anyone “awesome” in open source was the motivation behind his startup journey. Beyoncé “has a superfan group, the Beyhive, that will go to bat for her,” Douglas pointed out. “So if Beyoncé makes a country song, the Beyhive is there supporting her country song. If she starts doing the house music, which is her latest album, [they] are there to the point where like, you cannot say bad stuff about, he pointed out,. So what I'm focused on is having a strong community and having strong ties.” Open Sauced, which launched in June, seeks to build open source intelligence platform to help companies to stay competitive. Its aim is to help give more potential open source contributors the information they need to get started with projects, and help maintain them over time The conversation was co-hosted by Colleen Coll and Heather Joslyn of The New Stack.Web 2.0 ‘Opened the World'Douglas' introduction to tech started as a kid “cutting his teeth” on a Packard Bell and a shared computer at the community center inside his apartment complex, where he grew up outside of Tampa, Florida. “I don't know what computer was in there, but it ran DOS,” he said. “And I got to play, like, Wolfenstein and eventually Duke Nukem and stuff like that. So that was my first sort of like, touch of a computer and I actually knew what I was doing.” With his MBA in finance, the last recession in 2008 left only sales jobs available. But Douglas always knew he wanted to “build stuff.” “I've always been like a copy and paste [person] and loved playing DOS games,” he told The New Stack. “I eventually [created] a pretty nice MySpace profile. then someone told me ‘Hey, you know, you could actually build apps now.' “And post Web 2.0. people have frameworks and rails and Django. You just have to run a couple scripts, and you've got a web page live and put that in Heroku, or another server, and you're good. And that opened the world.” Open Sauced began as a side project when he was director of developer advocacy at GitHub; He started working on the project full time in June, after about two years of tinkering with it. Douglas didn't grow up with money, he said, so moving from as an employee to the risky life of a CEO seeking funding prompted him to create his own comprehensive strategy. This included content creation (including a podcast, The Secret Sauce), other marketing, and shipping frontend code. GitHub was very supportive of him spinning off Open Sauced as an independent startup, with colleagues assisting in refining his pitches to venture capital investors to raise funds. “At GitHub, they have inside of their employee employment contract a moonlight clause,” Douglas said. Which means, he noted, because the company is powered by open source, “basically, whatever you work on, as long as you're not competing directly against GitHub, rebuilding it from the ground up, feel free to do whatever you need to do moonlight.”Support for Blacks in TechOpen Sauced will also continue Douglas' efforts to increase representation of Blacks in tech and open pathways to level up their skills, similar to his work at GitHub with the Employee Resource Group (ERG) the Blacktocats. “The focus there was to make sure that people had a home, like a community of belonging,” he said. “If you're a black employee at GitHub, you have a space and it was very helpful with things like 2020, during George Floyd. lt was the community [in which] we all supported each other during that situation.” Douglas' mission to rid the effects of imposter syndrome and champion anyone interested in open source makes him sound more like an open source ”whisperer”' than a Beyoncé. Whatever the title, his iconic pizza brand — the company's web address is “opensauced.pizza” — was his version, he said, of creating album cover art before forming the band. His podcast's tagline urges listeners to “stay saucy.” His plan for doing that at Open Sauced is to encourage new open source contributors. “It's nice to know that projects can now opt in … but as a first-time contributor, where do I start? We can show you, ‘Hey, this project had five contributions, they're doing a great job. Why don't you start here?'

We asked for it, you answered our call. This episode features you interviewing us with questions that you sent in. JT, Allan, and Benedict answer everything that you ever wanted to know in this week’s special episode of BSDNow. NOTES This episode of BSDNow is brought to you by Tarsnap (https://www.tarsnap.com/bsdnow) Interview - Allan Jude - Allan.jude@gmail.com (Allan.jude@gmail.com) / @allanjude (https://twitter.com/allanjude) Interview - Benedict Reuschling - bcr@freebsd.org (mailto:bcr@freebsd.org) / @bsdbcr (https://twitter.com/bsdbcr) Interview - JT Pennington - jt@obs-sec.com (mailto:jt@obs-sec.com) / @q5sys (https://twitter.com/q5sys) AMA questions Benedict: You work at a university right? Were you already into tech before you started working there? What do you do there? Yes, I do work at the University of Applied Sciences, Darmstadt, Germany. I’m a lab engineer there (without a lab, but with a big data cluster). I teach in the winter semester an undergraduate, elective course called “Unix for Developers”. Yes, I was already in tech by that time. Did some previous work at companies before (selling hardware at the call-in hotline and later in the store) and during my CS studies. Allan: What’s the next big FreeBSD Project you plan on doing? JT: How did you get involved in BSD? Weren't you a Linux guy? All: Is there any way you can create an entire episode of BSDnow on hardware that runs OpenBSD and FreeBSD? We see you audacity, etc on a mac. Benedict: Not sure about OpenBSD (don’t use it), but FreeBSD should be doable for my part. If we switch from Skype to a different video chat tool, the rest is already there. Production side may be more difficult, but not impossible. All: if you could finish up one project right now... what would it be? Benedict: Updated ZFS chapter in the FreeBSD handbook. All: How did all of you guys meet? All: My question is, do you guys use FreeBSD as your main desktop OS? If not, what do you use? Benedict: No, but Mac OS is close enough. Doing a lot of SSHing into FreeBSD from there. All: Can you all give us the best shot of outside of their windows? JT’s answer: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-2LSbspL/0/69437dbb/5K/i-2LSbspL-5K.jpg Allan: https://photos.app.goo.gl/UnKXnKMt6cn8FDhNA Benedict: No, it’s dark outside anyway. ;-) All: How old were you when you got your first computer and what was that computer? Allan: 12 or 13, a 486DX2/66hz with an insane 32mb of RAM, 400 and 500 MB SCSI HDDs, 14400 baud model, and a 1.7x CD rom drive Benedict: Around 13 or so. 386DX2, 4 MB RAM, IDE disk drive (no idea how big, but it wasn’t much), 3.5” floppy, DOS, and a lot of games. JT: Technically the first was a Atari 1200XL with a 6502 CPU running at 1.79 MHz 64KB RAM. It had it's own OS and you could load programs off of either cartridges, floppy disks, or cassette tapes. First PC Clone was a Packard Bell with a 386 and 1mb ram which later was upgraded to 4mb and a Dual speed CD-ROM. My dad got me a Compaq 286 laptop... this one (show)... a year or so later because he got tired of fighting me for the computer. All: Can we have a peek at your bookcase and what books are there? Allan: No picture handy, but my shelf is pretty small, mostly a collection of autographed FreeBSD books. I have D&I with all 3 autographs (took some travel to acquire), and a copy of my first book (FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS) autographed by Jeff Bonwick and Matt Ahrens, the creators of ZFS, plus a bunch of other big names in ZFS like George Wilson. JT’s answer: So... my library is packed away... but here’s about half of it... the rest is still in storage. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-SBG2KDv/0/0b9856b8/4K/i-SBG2KDv-4K.jpg Software Collection: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-HfTVPN9/0/ad610dd4/O/i-HfTVPN9.jpg Benedict: A mix of FreeBSD books (by MWL), the graveyard book, 4 hour work week, the once and future king (took me a long time to finish that one), Total Immersion swimming (still learning to swim) and some books in german language, fiction and tech. Groff lives in there while the pandemic lasts. All: What desktop/Window Manager/shell do each of you primarily use? Benedict: Mainly Mac OS, when on FreeBSD it’s i3. Zsh with zsh-autosuggestions currently. JT: Lumina/zsh Allan: Lumina and tcsh, want to learn zsh but never gotten time to change All: What spoken languages do you speak? Benedict: German and English (obviously), learning a bit of Spanish via Duolingo at the moment JT: English, Bad English, and some French. All: Do you have Non-Computer hobbies if so what are those? Benedict: Tai Chi Chuan (Yang Style) JT: I'd say photography, but that's a job for me. I have a lot of varied interests, Krav Maga, working on my VW Corrado, working on the old Victorian house I bought, and camping/backpacking. Ive done the northern half of the AT (Appalachian Trail, I want to finish it up and then do the PCT and CDT. (Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail). All: When COVID passes, when are either of you are coming to BSD pizza night in Portland, OR, USA so I can buy you a beer/wine/whisky or pizza/coffee/tea (or six) Rapid Fire: All: What was the first car you ever owned? All: Do you own a vehicle and if so what is the make/model? All: Favorite Star franchise? Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Battlestar, etc. JT: Will you ever host any more BSDNow episodes? All: Favorite superhero? Marvel and/or DC. All: Favorite game(s) of all time? All: Pants or no pants on virtual meetings/presentations? All: Do you or have you used alternative operating systems that are not "main stream or is considered retro" if so what are those? All: Who has more animals at home? Allan: Does Allan have any batteries for his tetris cubes? Can we see that thing light up? Allan and Benedict: Are you guys going to go on JT's new show? If you’re wondering what show this is, here are the two shows Im a host of: https://www.opensourcevoices.org & https://www.theopiniondominion.org Allan and Benedict: Have Allan or Benedict lost anything on the way to and from a conference? Benedict: Is Benedict going to do his NOEL blocks again? Benedict: Does Benedict make his bed every Wednesday morning? It always looks great! Not just Wednesdays, but pretty much every day. Here, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKZRFDCbGTA Nuff said. ;-) JT: Are you batman because the episodes are always awesome sir so thank you JT’s answer: Can you ever admit to being batman? If I were batman wouldn't I have to deny it? All: What's your Daily Driver Hardware? All: Who has more servers or VMs at home? Benedict: Allan, easily JT: Allan definitely beats me with VMs, but I think I might give him a run on servers. 4x 4u HP DL580s, one HP DL980, three HP C3000 8 bay bladecenters, three HP C7000 16 bay Bladecenters, 2x Sun 280R, bunch of Dell and IBM 1Us… but all my stuff is old. Allan has all the new and shiny stuff. The Pile in the Kitchen: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-HBScrpk/0/4b058cc5/X2/i-HBScrpk-X2.jpg The other pile: https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-wNxFszV/0/e7a4b2d6/X2/i-wNxFszV-X2.jpg All: What book(s) are you currently reading? Benedict: Antifragile by Nassim Taleb JT: Douglas Hofstader - Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. Douglas Rushkoff - program or be programmed. Also a 4 part book series on the American civil war written in the 1880s, by people in the civil war. All: Favorite mechanical keyboard switch? Cherry MX, Kalih, Gateron, etc. Benedict: Cherry MX brown currently Allan: Cherry MX Blue (Coolermaster Master Keys Pro-L) JT: I prefer scissor switches, so I use a Logitech K740.
One year. Doesn’t seem possible, right? But that is how long BPM Pod has been running – just me, my guests, and this crappy 300-euro Packard Bell laptop pumping out episodes every two weeks. I did not think we would last a year. Yet here we are. And while I am certainly content with the limited success of BPM Pod so far, the fact I have proved to myself that I can do this only gives me more drive for the future. There will certainly be more promotional stuff from BPM Pod in the next year, as I aim to get to at least 1,000 listeners per episode, up from the average 100 listeners today. This week, we have a special episode then as we release the first BPM Pod Acoustic Album (called ‘Stripped Sessions’; more on this in a minute), and we talk to some of the most aware, self-reflective and honest guests we have heard on BPM Pod. Relatiiv: A journey to vulnerability This balance between contentment and ambition is a feeling shared by my guests this week – the wonderful Laura and Markus from the hip-hop funk-electronic duo, Relatiiv. In all professions, there are people with some kind of act. We all act at times. But real power lies in breaking down your act, removing the mask, and being yourself. It’s this openness and transparency that Laura and Markus really have nailed. And being content and open does not mean a lack of drive. “The fact that we are content does not mean that we do not have goals. In fact, because you are detached from your ego, you approach music with a much more free mindset,” says Laura. “It is about keeping your mind in balance and enjoying the moment and what you do.” Drawing inspiration from artists including Tom Misch, Mahalia, FKJ and Jordan Rakei – all the way through to Fredrik Chopin, no less – Laura and Markus have developed a downtempo beat common ground with love, laughter and longing at its core. It’s pretty mesmerizing stuff all in all from Relatiiv, and it’s doubtlessly one of the best episodes of BPM Pod. A great way to mark the one-year anniversary indeed. To find out more about Relatiiv, go to SoundCloud, Spotify or Facebook. BPM Pod: Stripped Sessions release Most episodes end with an acoustic version of an original song from the artist in that episode – it’s become pretty standard stuff here on BPM Pod. But what if all of those songs were recorded and released in one package? Well that’s exactly what I’ve done with BPM Pod: Stripped Sessions. Free to download from Bandcamp, I’ve compiled some of your favourite tracks from across the episodes. Sure, the sound is not always amazing (I am recording live with two mics only) but you get at least a taste of the magic I experience first-hand at the end of each episode. So go to Bandcamp and check it out and, as always, do spread the love far and wide.
