William of Normandy famously invaded England in 1066 – but, he didn't quite conquer it all. In fact, the duty of leading a second assault was left to his son William Rufus almost 30 years later. Speaking to David Musgrove, Sophie Ambler and Fiona Edmonds reveal how the second Norman Conquest came about in the 1090s, and explain how this story played out in little-studied kingdom of Cumbria. Book Club #122 - The Anglo Saxons - It's the last Book Club of the year and we're heading back to pre-conquest Britain for the history of the Anglo Saxons with Marc Morris. Rich and Marc talk about how little people know about this period and how most of the things they do know never happened, why having very few sources to work from doesn't make this light and easy work, how Marc discovered the best way to cover this sprawling and tumultuous half a millennium was to tell it through the stories of various individuals and why unfortunately all these individuals had to be male, why the Venerable Bede is good if you have an ill cow, but not always so good if you want the facts of what happened, which Anglo Saxon king allegedly shat in the font at his baptism, which king had a threesome with his wife and her mum and which king came close to becoming a cropper in Cheddar Gorge. Plus the skill required to combine academia with readability and whether comedians and historians would have survived the departure of the Romans and the arrival of the Vikings (no they wouldn't).Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-anglo-saxons-a-history-of-the-beginnings-of-england-marc-morris/5048642?ean=9781529156980See you next year! - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. William of Normandy's victory at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066 was far from the end of the Norman Conquest of England. It took many years, and putting down no small amount of rebellion, for William to fully establish control. Harold II – best known as the defeated king who reportedly got an arrow through the eye at the Battle of Hastings – was part of the Godwin family. In this episode, Marc Morris reveals how the Godwins were the power behind the throne through much of the reign of Harold's predecessor, King Edward the Confessor. He explains to David Musgrove why the family came to prominence and how Harold managed to take the crown for himself after King Edward's death at the start of 1066. Patrick Geoghegan and his panel explore the life, times and legacy of William The Conqueror. Was he a hero who instituted great changes, brought in legal and administrative innovations, and unified England, or a villain and invader who conquered it in a dramatic overthrow?Featuring Prof George Garnett, Professor of Medieval History at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford; Prof Virginia Davis, Professor of Medieval History, Queen Mary University of London; Prof Seán Duffy, Professor of Medieval Irish and Insular History, Trinity College Dublin; Dr Marc Morris, a historian who specializes in the Middle Ages; and Prof Hugh M. En la mayor parte de Europa el año 1066 pasó completamente desapercibido, pero no en Gran Bretaña. Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which Yahweh had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. - 1 Kings 11:1-3 This Episode's Links and Timestamps: 00:24 – 1 Kings 11 07:25 - Thoughts on the Reading 48:56 - The Anglo-Saxons A History of the Beginnings of England: 400–1066 by Marc Morris – Goodreads 1:15:14 – Asking ChatGPT About the History of Polygyny and Concubinage in Europe During the Middle Ages 1:27:48 - Was polygamy ever part of any pre-Christian European culture? In this episode, we examine the spread of Christianity into Europe from the perspective of cultural transmission and state building in the void left by the collapse of the western Roman Empire. Our speaker for this episode of the podcast is big on powerlifting and fitness . He shares his regrets in the past and explains the things he wished he should have done when he was starting out. Like a lot of young coaches he started his career as a "side hustle" until he built a clientele enough for him to make a living out of it. He also shares his techniques regarding client acquisition and the importance of "paid coaching relationship" , with that said he also explains the importance of having your own specific niche to succeed. 6:58-7:17 What Matters Most "It got to the point where I just spent so much time trying to digest and learn everything before applying it, that I think I wasted a lot of time. Considerable years that I could have been really just taking action and learning about what matters most, how to perfect a coaching system." -Marc Morris 14:33-15:10 Dealing with Dehydration "in 2 hour weight class sports where you weigh and then you're required to compete 2 hours afterwards, so drug tested powerlifting, weight lifting, some strongmen that have weight classes. You really don't want to be cutting more than like 6% of your body weight. Anything more than that, you're just dehydrating yourself to the point where it severely starts to impact your performance. Everyone's a little bit individual, I've had people come down with 7% and perform really really well, while others tried 2 or 3% above their weight class and they feel like complete garbage." -Marc Morris 17:10-17:32 Reset and Perform "I think the misconception is just because you jumped on a scale and are at a certain weight at some point doesn't mean you gained all the weight back, right? But the goal would be to replenish, hydrate , feel a little bit better and make up most of the weight so that you can perform again. That type of thing it's always the goal." -Marc Morris 19:24-19:48 Knowledge into Action "So I started applying what I was learning and building all my practice as I was finishing my PhD which is really really helpful for a lot of people. I'm sure that's something that you guys experience all the time too, it's like "don't quit your job to do this, do it on the side, figure out if you like it, gain a clientele, build up credibility and focus on how you wanna help people and who those specific people are and kind of go about it that way". That's what I had been doing." -Marc Morris 20:21-21:06 An Enjoyable Experience "As soon as I started realizing that hey, people are much more interested in the results you can help them accomplish versus knowledge and education, which is just like the educator coaching mindset right? I'm interested in this stuff. I wanna know how it works. I should share that stuff, but in reality the people that are gonna pay you to help them really are honed in on a specific result. So as soon as i realized hey people wanna know that i'm this powerlifting coach that can take all the "unfun" stuff away from the weight cutting process, and allow them to boost their performance and get stronger and become more competitive, as soon as i know "hey i gotta focus on that part" things became a lot easier because i kinda became known as person that could help them do that kind of stuff." -Marc Morris 22:39-23:16 Working to the Top "At the beginning, I thought, like with a lot of coaches, I will work with anyone. Anyone that wanted a specific goal that i could help them with in terms of nutrition, even they just wanted like overall longevity and feel better vitality that kind of stuff, i would work with them and take on anyone that type of thing. My prices were super low, i had clients that were excellent, I had clients that were terrible, i was working with everyone that type of thing. So over the years getting much more niche and focusing on who I helped and trying to stick to my guns and develop a system around the best way to help these people, really helped scale and grow my business, so that would be the biggest thing that changed." -Marc Morris 23:57 -24:11 Trust in training "the more specific you can get with who you're working with, the more someone can go to your stuff and know immediately if it fits for them or not right? Allows you to build trust and that authority so much quicker so that would be one of the biggest things." -Marc Morris 27:24-28:08 Finding the Solutions "For you to help someone you know the best capacity is in the paid coaching relationship, there's no getting around it , everyone has skin in the game. That type of stuff is effective. So from an onboarding perspective I didn't like selling things at the beginning or talking about price or any of that stuff. In a way to display value , regardless if someone asks me "can i work with you?, what would that look like? , or should i be taking protein powder?" I would essentially walk them through an assessment process where it's like "i don't really know if you should be taking protein powder, but let me collect a little bit more information and get a better idea of what you're trying to accomplish and what your goals are" and i can tell you, not only answer that question but also what might me holding you back from your goals and if coaching seems to be the right fit after that point, we could talk about that." -Marc Morris 40:17-40:36 Taking the Initiative "i'd rather throw someone into the deep end and coach them through with the intent that it's not gonna be perfect and you're gonna get better and improve, before we peel back some elements in our approach versus i'm making the assumption that you're not gonna be able to do this based on your background and what you're saying then work up." -Marc Morris 52:28-53:11 Asking for Referrals "first of all there's no shame in asking for a referral, if you need clients ,if you want clients. The people that are working with you typically want to support you and give that type of stuff, there's no shame in asking for a referral when you need it or when you want to grow or you want to fill things up. I think one of the best ways to do that is you always need a reason right? It's not just like i want to work with more people, it's like i have some availability, you're a great client because of these reasons, you're punctual, you work really hard, i'm assuming that based on who you are and our fantastic working experience, you know someone that is also like you and would benefit from this experience. Can you put me on contact with them?, and kind of go down that path." -Marc Morris 1:00:10-1:00:27 Technology in Coaching "I think where I'm seeing the industry going is that there's gonna be more TECH , we're gonna be able to utilize more tech, that's gonna be important but I don't think it's gonna replace experienced coaches making the right decision for individuals and having that human connection around stuff." -Marc Morris 1:07:54-1:08:19 Off Days "I went through a stretch where I didn't work out for 5 days and I felt completely sick to my stomach. I felt like a waste of space. I felt like a piece of me was completely missing and I know for a fact that the people that work with me don't feel that way. You know what I mean, most of them don't, right? So I think having some empathy around that YOU are not your market and where these people are coming from is really really important." -Marc Morris

A man who (if you believe a certain tapestry) was killed by an arrow to the eye, and who became the most famous of all Anglo-Saxon kings despite only ruling for nine months. Here to talk about the rise, reign and fall of Harold Godwinson is historian, author and expert on the middle ages, Dr Marc Morris. Plus, we're joined by English Heritage Event Manager Diana Evans to find out what you can expect to see at this year's re-enactment. To plan a visit to 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, or book your place at this year's event, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/battle

We had the great pleasure to interview Dr. Levi Roach, Prize-winning author and Associate Professor at the University of Exeter about his new book, The Empires of the Normans.. We have encountered the Normans many times in the History of the Germans. This is the chance to get the whole story. It is a tale of ambitious adventures and fierce freebooters, of fortunes made and fortunes lost. The Normans made their influence felt across all of western Europe and the Mediterranean, from the British Isles to North Africa, and Lisbon to the Holy Land. In Empires of the Normans we discover how they combined military might and political savvy with deeply held religious beliefs and a profound sense of their own destiny. For a century and a half, they remade Europe in their own image, and yet their heritage was quickly forgotten - until now. 'In this fascinating, panoramic account, Levi Roach brings an expert eye and page-turning energy to the telling of their extraordinary story' Helen Castor, bestselling author of She Wolves 'A fresh retelling of the story of the Normans . . . written with enthusiasm and brio' Marc Morris, bestselling author of The Anglo-Saxons Publisher: John Murray Press ISBN: 9781529398465 Number of pages: 320 Weight: 540 g Dimensions: 236 x 158 x 30 mm

If you don't have profits you, you don't have a business, you have a hobby – period! As uncomfortable as that statement might be for fitness professionals it is objectively true and critically important. So many fitness professionals enter and leave the field quickly because they can't make a stable income. In many cases this is because fitness pros approach their business from a caregiving-centric mindset, rather than a business-first mindset. The reality is if you can't make a living, you can't keep caregiving for long enough to help anyone. Once fitness professionals realize this business-first approach opens them up to leading a long, sustainable, and financially stable career; the entire game is changed for them and the people they help!Much like all things that fitness professionals learn, business and marketing are skills that are acquired through knowledgeable teachers and mentors. In episode 37 we have an incredibly knowledgeable teacher who not only talks the talk, but walks the walk, in his own successful fitness business. Marc Morris comes from a nutrition and fitness background, not from the boardroom or a business school, which makes his teaching even more understandable and applicable. In this episode we'll discuss actionable strategies, tactics, and techniques to effectively market fitness businesses of all sizes (from the single personal trainer to large fitness departments in health clubs). More importantly than anything else, this episode has many easily implementable suggestions that you can start using today to make you business better, reach a larger client base, make more money, and ultimately help more people. Starting a business is never easy; there are many moving parts that you have to look after. Especially with a coaching business, the content you put out there, the product/service itself that you offer, something about it should inspire them to want to buy your solution. Talk about the strategy, marketing, sales, and the fulfillment you find in the service you offer. How do you find equal balance in meeting all of them together to build a successful business? Dr. Marc Morris is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He's a nutrition coach, and he's an educator. He lives in beautiful Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. With a decade of experience in online coaching, Mark has been obsessed with health and fitness since he was a teenager, taking him many places from athletic pursuits like competing and coaching at the powerlifting world championships to academic endeavors like teaching full university courses on macronutrients and metabolism. Mark's current focus has shifted from his one-on-one nutrition coaching business to the Dr. Marc Method, the 12-week nutrition coaching program that gets people passionate about health, nutrition, the tools, and knowledge to help people and make money. In this episode, Marc shares what it takes for people to want and buy your solution, in terms of the content you put out there. He shares tips on how you could attract them to consider the service you offer. With many coaches struggling in pricing their services and all the imposter syndrome of pricing low just because they feel they don't deserve the rate they're charging, he has all that covered for you to raise your price confidently. On top of that, he talks about psychology and persuasion and the sales process you should be taking and doing to have a thriving and sustainable coaching business. "Part of the marketing and sales process is attracting the right people, putting the right elements of psychology and strategy in place so that they know what you're selling. They know what's in it for them. They know that this is a desirable thing that people want." - Marc Morris Topics Covered: 02:36 - How is it like living in one of the coldest places in Canada 03:20 - The shift from Chemistry to Nutrition 09:31 - Sharing about his powerlifting days and takeaways from that experience 16:46 - You don't need to learn more; you just need to take action 18:27 - Taking the right balance between business, marketing, and fulfillment of your services 22:38 - What a sales process should look like 24:11 - His definition of Marketing 29:44 - Speak to your audience's level, and in the words they understand not what you're comfortable talking about 31:07 - A tip for your content 33:53 - That element of imposter syndrome when it comes to pricing your product/service and how to overcome it 40:47 - Offering a holistic program versus a per hour package 44:52 - What's the future of coaching, especially right after the pandemic 48:23 - Talking about that 'legacy piece' of being a parent Connect with Marc Morris: Instagram Connect with Gavin McHale: maverickcoachingacademy.ca LinkedIn Instagram
Few Germans have left as deep a mark on Britain as the Anglo-Saxon settlers. But who were they really? What did they ever do for us? And what were the Vikings if not just another wave of Germanic migrants who picked out the British isles as a plum investment opportunity? Katja Hoyer and Oliver Moody are joined by Marc Morris, the medieval historian and author of the bestselling The Anglo-Saxons: A History of the Beginnings of England. Hosted on Acast. The Anglo-Saxons represent one of the most vital and important periods in English history, but then why do we know so very little about them? Marc Morris, historian and author of The Anglo-Saxons: A History of the Beginnings of England, takes Nick Cohen on a journey though one of England's most fascinating chapters, and how their influence is still felt today.“We're taught about the Anglo-Saxons as young children, which means we only learn about them in basic terms.”“Only by the 18th century was Alfred the Great idolised, but there was a lot of the original Alfred which is worthy of admiration.”“English counties are basically as they were in the 10th century, and a great many villages and towns were founded by the Anglo-Saxons.”Presented by Nick Cohen. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producers: Jelena Sofronijevic and Jacob Archbold. Music by Kenny Dickinson. Audio production by Alex Rees. Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters.Tracing this history is today's guest Marc Morris, author of The Anglo-Saxons. We discuss the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings. It explores how they abandoned their old gods for Christianity, established hundreds of churches and created dazzlingly intricate works of art. It charts the revival of towns and trade, and the origins of a familiar landscape of shires, boroughs and bishoprics. It is a tale of famous figures like King Offa, Alfred the Great and Edward the Confessor, but also features a host of lesser known characters - ambitious queens, revolutionary saints, intolerant monks and grasping nobles. Through their remarkable careers we see how a new society, a new culture and a single unified nation came into being.Drawing on a vast range of original evidence - chronicles, letters, archaeology and artefacts - renowned historian Marc Morris illuminates a period of history that is only dimly understood, separates the truth from the legend, and tells the extraordinary story of how the foundations of England were laid.
The roots of some important English traditions and political institutions began in one of those historical pockets of huge change but scarce written material in the centuries after the Romans left and the Normans arrived, making it challenging to find answers. Marc Morris is a nationally ranked powerlifter. He's competed successfully in Men's physique, he's highly educated with a Ph.D. in Human Nutrition, and over 10 years of experience as an online nutrition coach. He's been lifting weights since the age of 16 and has always been hyper focused towards getting to where he wants to be. He's an academic who lifts. There's more to Marc though. We talk about seeing what someone else has, or where someone else is in their life and just wanting it so bad that you essentially replicate it and where that works and where we need to just figure out who WE are and just be that. We talk about how important it is that our biggest passion is in something greater than ourselves, and not just in making ourselves into who we think we should be. Marc talked about losing his dad suddenly due to a heart attack, he talked about his wife's battle with cancer shortly after they got married and how she shared her journey to help others going through the same thing. He talked about becoming a dad, and navigating post secondary wondering what it had in store for him. For being a pretty stoic dude he really opened up in this episode which meant a lot to me. Near the end I made sure to get him to talk about nutrition for a couple minutes to keep this on par for the course as a fitness podcast. But then we brought it back to the things in life that make him feel like he's living it to the fullest. Dr. Marc Morris, is the founder of Polyhealth as well as being a certified strength coach. Medieval historian Marc Morris reveals the fascinating history of Britain’s castles, exploring why they were built, what they were used for, and the challenges of defending and attacking them. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jonathan Freedland compares cyber-attacks today with the Great Siege of Dover Castle in 1216 during which the French used new offensive techniques to try to seize the English throne. In 1216, Prince Louis of France's near-successful bid for the English throne climaxed in Dover, where his forces used a multitude of techniques in a major assault on the castle - including digging beneath the castle gate and use of the trebuchet to attempt to breach the walls. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. The medieval King responsible for the document is King John of England. He didn't create it, but it was his turbulent reign that caused the Barons to create the document. King John put his seal on it in June 1215 and then refused to abide by the Magna Carta forcing the Barons to revolt against their king. Their revolt, The First Barons' War or The Magna Carta Rebellion, lasted over two years and only ended with the death of King John. Today on the Medieval Archive Podcast we talk to author and historian Marc Morris about his new book, King John: Treachery, Tyranny and the Road to Magna Carta.
