The HEART Model: An Integrated Faith-Based & Psychological Approach to Heal from Trauma Benjamin B Keyes, PhD, EdD, NCC, CCMHC, LPC, MCT Professor/Director of Training and Internship for Masters of Mental Health Counseling Program Divine Mercy University Dr. Benjamin Keyes' specialties include dissociative disorders, domestic violence, child abuse, addictions, mood and anxiety disorders, human trafficking, and work with refugees. Dr. Keyes received his Doctorate in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1985 from International College and his most recent in Counseling Psychology from the University of Sarasota in 2003. He also has Doctoral Degrees in Theology, Divinity and Ministry. Over the years Dr. Keyes has worked extensively with hospitalization programs, and private practice, and has established himself as one of the leading program innovators for partial hospitalization programs. Dr. Keyes has been in Private Practice for over forty years and has been a researcher in Trauma and Dissociation for the last 26 years. Dr. Keyes and his colleagues have received the Richard A. Kluft Research Award for work and research in the People's Republic of China from the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation and the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. His work dispelled the Cultural Model of Dissociation and has resulted in Dissociative Disorders being treated throughout mental health facilities in China. Dr. Keyes has also received The Hope Award from Restoration Ministries for his work in establishing, the HEART Model, a faith-based trauma model for working with Trafficked Survivors and complex trauma. Over the last six years, Dr. Keyes has been a Professor and Director for the Center for Trauma and Resiliency Studies at Divine Mercy University in Sterling, Virginia. As head of the Center for Trauma and Resiliency Studies, Dr. Keyes supervised the development and training of graduate students in First Response and Chronic Trauma. Dr. Keyes also serves the University as a Clinical Mental Health Program Professor. The Center's Trauma Team will deploy to traumatic events worldwide as needed, train professionals and paraprofessionals, and research the HEART Model and its ethics with trafficking survivors. The book The HEART Model is a 20-year project coming to fruition, following a 7-year study showing its efficacy. Dr. Keyes is also the Executive Director of The Green Cross Academy for Traumatology. Starting in early January 2024, I'll be going through - in numerical order - the 44 Psalms I've arranged and recorded with my dear friends the McGraths (Celtic Psalms). Each week I will share reflections on a Psalm of the week, with accompanying journal pages (see the cover above) to enhance your personal journey. In addition, I'll be doing a weekly short-form podcast with a song and reflections.The journal pages and podcast will include an introduction to the music and theme of each Psalm; connections to other writings and wisdom; helpful links to the Psalms for the Spirit podcast; reflection questions for you to explore through journaling or other forms of expression; a prayer and an invitation. Ray entered Restoration Ministries when it became very clear to him that God called him to be here. After graduating from Harvey House in 1989, he worked an outside job while continuing to live at Harvey House. He eventually became the Harvey House Director. In 1997, when the executive director left for another position, Ray was entrusted as Acting Director for months until the board realized he was the best man for the job. He was named Executive Director of Restoration Ministries in 1998. Since then, Ray has helped over 200 men and women successfully complete their recovery programs. In 1991, Ray started a youth group for teenagers in Harvey and surrounding suburbs, and he became a youth pastor at Spirit of God Fellowship in South Holland. He was also instrumental in starting Restoration Ministries' youth outreach programs. Ray is an elected member of Thornton Township District 205 School Board, representing the many families who entrust in him their children's education. In May of 2020, Ray suffered a stroke. When his family asked for prayers on social media, more than a thousand replied that they were praying for him. People who Ray had cared for, mentored, and inspired over the years—plus their families, their children, and friends—all prayed for Ray's recovery. Ray is back spending three days a week in his office, counseling Harvey House residents.

Jesus told us that we should always pray rather than lose heart and become anxious (Luke 18:1). We are in very, very troublesome times. Our prayer is that God will come down and visit His creation in His own way and deliver us from persecutors and those who will work against His will. Another part of the outreach of Restoration Ministries is to minister to abused women. I am a domestic violence survivor - and while I know Satan intended that domestic violence to kill me, God used it for His good purpose. I am now able to minister to women who have been abused because I have been there. I was a statistic, but now I'm a survivor and it's all because of the powerful hand of God. Ray Banks is the Executive Director of Harvey House School of Ministry, a Christian residential training program by Restoration Ministries that serves men who have struggled with drug and alcohol addictions. Restoration Ministries’ goal is to restore hope to people and bring lasting change to the community of Harvey, Illinois. Harvey House is a 12-18 month program that aims to guide lives in a positive direction. The mission of Harvey House is to assist, develop, and train men who have a desire to grow in Christ so that their lives become a living testimony to the ways of the Lord.

Leroy Barber has dedicated more than 25 years to eradicating poverty, confronting homelessness, restoring local neighborhoods, healing racism, and living what Dr. King called “the beloved community.” In 1989, burdened by the plight of Philadelphia’s homeless population, he and his wife Donna founded Restoration Ministries, a non-profit created to serve homeless families and children living on the streets. In 1994 he became Director of the Internship Program at Cornerstone Christian Academy. Licensed and ordained at Mt Zion Baptist Church, he served as Youth Director with Donna, and as the Associate Minister of Evangelism. In 1997, he joined FCS Urban Ministries in Atlanta, GA and worked with the Atlanta Youth Project as the founding Executive Director of Atlanta Youth Academies, a private elementary school providing quality Christian education for low-income families in the inner city. He went on to plant and pastor Community Life Church, a missional congregation in southeast Atlanta, and served as the Atlanta City Director for Mission Year, a national year-long urban ministry program focused on service and discipleship. In 2007 Leroy became President of Mission Year and led the organization until 2013. He also served as Co-Executive Director of FCS Urban Ministries from 2009 to 2013 and as Global Executive Director of Word Made Flesh from 2013 to 2015. Leroy is currently the Executive Director of The Voices Project and Holla Mentors, organizations committed to supporting and developing leaders of color. He serves on the boards of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), The Simple Way and EEN, the Evangelical Environmental Network. He is the author of Embrace: God's Radical Shalom for a Divided World, Everyday Missions: How Ordinary People Can Change the World (IVP), Red, Brown, Yellow, Black, White: Who’s More Precious in God’s Sight?(Jericho). He was also a contributor to Tending to Eden, and the groundbreaking book UnChristian: What a New Generation Thinks about Christianity and Why It Matters. Through Ryan's vision and dedication Retriever of Chicago has become one of the largest ISO's at National Processing Company. Our dear friend, brother, mentor and guest Pastor, Leroy Barber has dedicated more than 20 years to eradicating poverty, confronting homelessness, restoring local neighborhoods, healing racism, and living what Dr. King called “the beloved community.” Leroy starts projects that shape society; in 1989, burdened by the plight of Philadelphia’s homeless, he and his wife Donna founded Restoration Ministries, to serve homeless families and children living on the streets. In 1994 he became Director of Internship Programs at Cornerstone Christian Academy. Leroy was licensed and ordained at Mt Zion Baptist Church where he served as Youth Director with Donna, and also served as Associate Minister of Evangelism. In 1997, he joined FCS Urban Ministries, working with Atlanta Youth Project to serve as the founding Executive Director of Atlanta Youth Academies, a private elementary school providing quality Christian education for low-income families in the inner city. Leroy also helped found DOOR Atlanta and Community Grounds Coffee shop in Atlanta. Leroy is currently the Global Executive Director of Word Made Flesh, an international organization that works among the most vulnerable of the world's poor. Rev. Barber is on the boards of Mission Year and the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA). He is the author of New Neighbor: An Invitation to Join Beloved Community, and Everyday Missions: How Ordinary People Can Change the World and was also chosen as a contributor to Tending to Eden, and the groundbreaking book UnChristian: What a New Generation Thinks About Christianity and Why It Matters. His third book, Red, Yellow, Black and White: Who’s More Precious In His Sight?, will be published this fall. Leroy has been married to Donna for the past 28 years and together they have three adult children - Jessica, Joshua, and Joel, and two adopted children - Asha and Jonathan.
