Angus breeders only stay in business if their customers do, too. Joe and Lake Elliott, of Robert Elliott & Sons Angus near Adams, Tenn., make selection decisions with that end in mind. Their rules of management include one-line statements like, “No bad genes in = no bad genes out” and “realize trend is not destiny,” and they help guide their program. This episode covers Lake's path back to the family operation and the evolution of their customer base with more focused, data-driven buyers looking for value-added marketing opportunities. To them, things like disposition and fertility aren't just nice to have, they're foundational traits. Dr Robert Elliott is co-developer of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), a celebrated trainer, researcher and author, and Emeritus Professor of Counselling at University of Strathclyde in Scotland, and most recently co-author of Emotion-Focused Counselling in Action .
In this episode, I speak with Laco about his work and research in the area of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). Laco discusses how he originally was trained in Client Centered Therapy and was drawn to Les Greenberg's, Emotion-Focused Therapy as it was an extension of Carl Rogers' work, with Les Greenberg being a student of one of Rogers' students. We discussed Emotion-Focused Therapy and how Les Greenberg and others were studying the change moments in therapy, and were conducting process research on Gestalt interventions using empty chair work and two-chair dialogues with self-criticism. He explained that in EFT, the therapist is trying to access the core of the pain and the unmet needs. He discussed how emotions are seen as either being at the symptom level, or are the underlying emotions, and the therapists is identifying those underlying emotions and emotion schemes, which are the target of intervention. He discussed his work on identifying transdianostic features of Emotion-Focused Therapy and discussed how most of these pivotal painful moments had to do with either the emotions of feeling sad/lonely, shame, or fear. He explained that through the imaginary chair dialogues, the client is able to have a corrective experience, where compassion is elicited, like speaking to their younger self who was hurt, or healthy boundary setting anger for protection. These processes help the person's emotion schemes become more flexible, moving them from sad/lonely to feeling connected, from shame to validation and acceptance, and from fear to safety or protection. We discuss how EFT conducts extensive process research, and discussed Laco's work in research and writing, recently publishing the Transdiangosic Emotion-Focused Therapy: A Clinical Guide for Transforming Emotional Pain book with Daragh Keogh, Ph.D., and also creating a workbook for clients to be able to continue the work outside of therapy. He also discussed his work in making resources available online and possibly creating more online programs for clients to continue their work. Ladislav Timulak, PhD is Professor in Counselling Psychology at Trinity College Dublin. He is Course Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. Ladislav (or short Laco; read Latso) is involved in the training of counselling psychologists. His main research interest is psychotherapy research, particularly the development of emotion focused therapy as well as online mental health interventions. He has written (or co-written) 10 books, over 100 peer reviewed papers and chapters in both his native language, Slovak, and in English. His most recent books include Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy: An Emotion‐Focused Approach (Routledge, 2015) and Transforming Generalized Anxiety: An Emotion-Focused Approach (Routledge, 2017)(with James McElvaney; 2018), and Essentials of Descriptive-Interpretive Qualitative Research: (with co-author Robert Elliott) and Transdiagnostic Emotion-Focused Therapy (with co-author Daragh Keogh) published by the American Psychological Association (2021). His latest books include Essentials of Qualitative Meta-Analysis (with Mary Creaner; American Psychological Association) and Transforming Emotional Pain: An Emotion-Focused Workbook (with several co-authors; Routledge). He provides trainings for clinicians using the approach presented in his books internationally. He directs Emotion-Focused Therapy Research Group and co-directs an E-Mental Health Research group. He previously co-edited Counselling Psychology Quarterly. He serves on various editorial boards and provides expert reviews of academic papers and research grants internationally.

Mentoring and Modeling - Pastor Robert Elliott - 12/10/2020 by Moses Lake Baptist Church
“Boys, let us get up a club or society of some description.”This is the story Reconstruction peaking and its opponents organizing to fight back. With Radical Republicans at the helm of Reconstruction, the former Confederate states are forced to make new state constitutions that include black men in the process. The outcome is nothing short of revolutionary. Black men not only come away with the vote, but the ability to run for office! Black Americans like PBS Pinchback, Robert Smalls, and Robert Elliott are soon filling the highest offices in the land—even Congress. But this change is far too radical for some ex-Confederates. When six Tennessean men form a social club, it quickly takes a paramilitary turn. Its former rebel members realize that the only way to restore the ante bellum world they long for is through violence and murder ... and they aren’t above restorting to such measures.
Robert Elliott is the Senior Director of Product Strategy and Engagement at Globant and has previously worked in product at Turner and Home Depot. He talks about his early wins at Turner and how he's thinking deeply about how to help large organizations be more strategic when it comes to product and UX.
Ginny Dent Brant is a speaker and writer who grew up in the halls of power of Washington D.C. She has served as a counselor, educator, wellness advocate, and adjunct professor. She served as a trustee of the Baptist International Mission Board for eight years, and she and her husband participated in mission work in Yemen, Gaza, the Czech Republic, Russia, China, and Romania. Brant's award-winning book, “Finding True Freedom: From the White House to the World,” was endorsed by the late Chuck Colson. To view Brant's cancer prevention blog and more information visit https://www.ginnybrant.com/ (https://www.ginnybrant.com/). Four months after her mother died of cancer, author and speaker Ginny Dent Brant was told by doctors she also had breast cancer, and an aggressive form of it. Having just watched her mother's plight, Brant decided to take a different approach and immersed herself in research to find out what she could do in addition to traditional treatments to help her doctors beat her cancer. The steps she took to change her lifestyle during her six-year battle with cancer are now chronicled in her new book “Unleash Your God-given Healing: Eight Steps to Prevent and Survive Cancer.” “My diagnosis sent me on a quest to discover why I got an aggressive and deadly cancer for which I had no risk factors or genetic indicators,” says Brant. “I read over 50 books on cancer written by doctors, scientists, nutritionists, etc. I attended medical and cancer summits online and in-person conferences where cancer experts lecture. I searched the medical and science journals tirelessly to connect the dots between the Bible, nutrition, the science of how the immune system works, and conventional and integrative medicine. My doctors were amazed when my blood work six weeks after chemotherapy showed that my red and white blood cells and platelets were all within normal ranges. They called me their ‘Rock Star' Cancer Patient because this usually takes two to five years.” In “Unleash Your God-given Healing,” Brant discusses in-depth how nutrition, lifestyle, integrative and conventional medicine, as well as biblical wisdom work together to boost the human body's immune system. Additionally, Brant's book features commentary from practicing oncologist and medical researcher, Dr. Robert Elliott, Director of the Elliott-Elliott-Head Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Brant says the steps she took to improve her prognosis and rebuild her immune system and overall health can also be used to combat viruses such as COVID-19 as well as many other chronic diseases. “I believe this COVID-19 is a wakeup call for us to realize we need to take better care of our bodies,” says Brant. “This disease is clearly worse in those who have underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung issues, and poorly functioning immune systems. Doctors agree that some of the ailments we struggle with are either caused or made worse by our own lifestyle choices and lack of common sense. Since rebuilding my immune system during and after my cancer journey, I have avoided the usual yearly colds, flu or viruses. Although I'm limiting going out in public and I'm practicing the CDC guidelines, I know that if I do get exposed to COVID-19, my immune function is strong and my own body will take care of it in general.” Brant says her battle with cancer has strengthened another necessary element of healing—her faith. Having just watched her mother’s plight, Brant decided to take a different approach and immersed herself in research to find out what she could do in addition to traditional treatments to help her doctors beat her cancer. They called me their ‘Rock Star’ Cancer Patient because this usually takes two to five years.” In “Unleash Your God-given Healing,” Brant discusses in-depth how nutrition, lifestyle, integrative and conventional medicine, as well as biblical wisdom work together to boost the human body’s immune system. Additionally, Brant’s book features commentary from practicing oncologist and medical researcher, Dr. Although I’m limiting going out in public and I’m practicing the CDC guidelines, I know that if I do get exposed to COVID-19, my immune function is strong and my own body will take care of it in general.” Brant says her battle with cancer has strengthened another necessary element of healing—her faith. “I thank God for each day. I’m grateful for how He has created the body to heal and repair itself. It’s all a part of his miraculous design, but we must do our part. We must care for our body as the Bible instructs us. We can either enhance the wonderful immune system God has blessed us with by our lifestyle or we can suppress it. My journey has given me a new purpose in life—to educate and inform other people, help others to prevent cancer, and help those who are currently battling cancer. It is not something I would have chosen, but God is opening the doors and I’m excited about this new direction. Although those with my diagnosis and who go through the treatments as I did are not promised tomorrow, my new philosophy is ‘Everyday is a gift.’ I plan to serve Him faithfully until He takes me home.” Connect with Ginny Brant: https://www.ginnybrant.com/ Email: Ginnybrant@msn.comListen to her recent interview with Dr. David Jockers: https://drjockers.com/episode-44-8-steps-to-prevent-survive-cancer-with-ginny-brant/?inf_contact_key=7a7af1c90d5c9096faa28fdfa2df438509c74070ac2bf3cfa7869e3cfd4ff832 Join us in Making Pittsburgh Healthy: www.makingpittsburghhealthy.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MakingPittsburghHealthy/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/makingpittsburghhealthy/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/draarontressler Don't forget to rate & review the show! Hid In Mine Heart - Robert Elliott - 8/9/2020 by Moses Lake Baptist Church
How do social media algorithms feed us news, entertainment, advertisements, even suggesting friends and lovers? By grossly simplifying human nature, according to featured guest Dr. Robert Elliott Smith, Research Fellow in Computer Science at University College London and author of Rage Inside the Machine: How to Prevent the Internet from Making Bigots of Us All. Dr. Smith details how the same Artificial Intelligence (AI) that reaps engineering benefits has disastrous consequences for civil society. Raised in Birmingham Alabama in the 1960's, he knows something about polarized situations. That upbringing, and his 30-year career in AI, informs Dr. Smith's warnings about polarizing algorithms and advice on how to mitigate that damage. Original music composed and created by Ryan Adair Rooney. How do we stop the internet making bigots of us all? We live in a world increasingly ruled by technology, finding comfort in the idea that this technology is free of prejudice; only its users are fallible. But don't be so sure, warns author and scholar Robert Elliott Smith. In his book, Rage Inside the Machine: The Prejudice of Algorithms, and How to Stop the Internet Making Bigots of Us All, the 30-year veteran in artificial intelligence challenges the long-held assumption that technology is amoral and apolitical. Join Robert Elliott Smith as he shines a light on how we're increasingly being constrained by algorithms – being forced to adapt to technology rather than adapting technology to suit us. Presenting a compelling account of how we got here, Smith treads a fine line between indignation at what can happen and recognition of the scale of technological achievements. As an eminent computer scientist and machine learning pioneer, Smith reveals how new thinking and research can help us keep our sanity and our humanity. Chaired by Katharine Kemp, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law, UNSW Sydney.
Bob Elliot has held significant roles in many of the critical decisions that shaped housing policy. He served as general counsel of HUD, a time he described as some of his most satisfying professionally, and later went on to found his own law firm. In this episode he tells the story of a key Supreme Court decision he was directly involved in that helped desegregate public housing in Chicago, which was notorious for housing discrimnation. Listen to the background of how the Chicago Gautreaux decision came about.
Based on extensive field research in Turkey, Istanbul, Christopher Houston's new book Istanbul, City of the Fearless: Urban Activism, Coup D'Etat, and Memory in Turkey (University of California Press, 2020) explores social movements and the broader practices of civil society in Istanbul in the critical years before and after the 1980 military coup, the defining event in the neoliberal reengineering of the city. Bringing together developments in anthropology, urban studies, cultural geography, and social theory, Christopher Houston offers new insights into the meaning and study of urban violence, military rule, activism and spatial tactics, relations between political factions and ideologies, and political memory and commemoration. This book is both a social history and an anthropological study, investigating how activist practices and the coup not only contributed to the globalization of Istanbul beginning in the 1980s but also exerted their force and influence into the future. In today's podcast, host Robert Elliott speaks with Dr. Perin Gürel about her new book The Limits of Westernization: A Cultural History of America in Turkey(Columbia University Press, 2017), which examines how Turkish perceptions of the United States intersected with debates around "westernization" in the twentieth century. In a 2001 poll, Turks ranked the United States highest when asked: "Which country is Turkey's best friend in international relations?" When the pollsters reversed the question―"Which country is Turkey's number one enemy in international relations?"―the United States came in second. How did Turkey's citizens come to hold such opposing views simultaneously? In The Limits of Westernization, Gürel explains this unique split and its echoes in contemporary U.S.-Turkey relations. Using Turkish and English sources, Gürel maps the reaction of Turks to the rise of the United States as a world-ordering power in the twentieth century. As Turkey transitioned from an empire to a nation-state, the country's ruling elite projected "westernization" as a necessary and desirable force but also feared its cultural damage. Turkish stock figures and figures of speech represented America both as a good model for selective westernization and as a dangerous source of degeneration. At the same time, U.S. policy makers imagined Turkey from within their own civilization templates, first as the main figure of Oriental barbarism (i.e., "the terrible Turk"), then, during the Cold War, as good pupils of modernization theory. As the Cold War transitioned to the War on Terror, Turks rebelled against the new U.S.-made trope of the "moderate Muslim." Local artifacts of westernization―folk culture crossed with American cultural exports―and alternate projections of modernity became tinder for both Turkish anti-Americanism and resistance to state-led modernization projects. Robert Elliott is a Ph.D. student in the Department of History, Duke University.

Vahram Ter-Matevosyan new book Turkey, Kemalism and the Soviet Union: Problems of Modernization, Ideology and Interpretation (Palgrave Macmillan, examines the Kemalist ideology of Turkey from two perspectives. It discusses major problems in the existing interpretations of the topic and how the incorporation of Soviet perspectives enriches the historiography and our understanding of that ideology. To address these questions, the book looks into the origins, evolution, and transformational phases of Kemalism between the 1920s and 1970s. The research also focuses on perspectives from abroad by observing how republican Turkey and particularly its founding ideology were viewed and interpreted by Soviet observers. Paying more attention to the diplomatic, geopolitical, and economic complexities of Turkish-Soviet relations, scholars have rarely problematized those perceptions of Turkish ideological transformations. Looking at various phases of Soviet attitudes towards Kemalism and its manifestations through the lenses of Communist leaders, party functionaries, diplomats and scholars, the book illuminates the underlying dynamics of Soviet interpretations.
