Before the 19th Century, there was no such thing as Germany. Not yet. The German people were scattered across dozens of separate countries, dominated by Austria and Prussia. But an idea was loose in Europe - that a people should rule themselves, that a nation should be free - and that idea was about to catch fire.In Part 1 of the Wars of German Unification series, our big "context" episode, we trace the origins of German nationalism, the epic rivalry of Austria and Prussia, the influence of the French Revolution and Napoleon on German history, and the rising tide of revolution that led to the European Spring.Because to understand the Wars of German Unification, the battles and the iron and the blood, we have to start with the first attempt to unify Germany, the one that failed. We have to start with the road not taken. We have to start with 1848.Sources: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/the-wars-of-german-unification-source-listMusic:Haydn String Quartet In C Major Emperor Hob Iii 77 Op 76 No 3 Movement 2, by Lynnepublishing via Pond5.comhttps://www.pond5.com/royalty-free-music/item/92945102-haydn-string-quartet-c-major-emperor-hob-iii-77-op-76-no-3-m"Phoenix Uprising" by Allwaves via Pond5.comhttps://www.pond5.com/royalty-free-music/item/302066823-phoenix-rising-cinematic-trailer-theme-rebellion-sacrifice-iChasing Daylight by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comAttribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Voice of Earth by Alex-Productions | https://onsound.eu/Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY 3.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Juggernaut by Scott Buckley | www.scottbuckley.com.auMusic promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY 4.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
In 1789, a mob stormed a fortress called the Bastille…and the world would never be the same. Over the next sixty years, the French rose up again…and again…and again, from 1789 to 1848, revolution after revolution after revolution, one great struggle that refused to end, one song that refused to die. Or...James Houser's Cliff Notes version of French history from 1789 to 1848. Guillotines, flags, songs, speeches, and more than a little blood. The revolution will not always be civilized...but it will transform the world.Sources: coming soon (in the large German Wars of Unification source list)Music: Brahms, Tragic Overture, Op No. 81, performed by The Czech National Symphony Orchestra. The Soviet-Afghan War is over, but for both countries, the struggle has only begun. The Soviet Union begins to crumble, a collapse that is not inevitable or predictable, as the world watches in disbelief. But the world isn't watching Afghanistan, which descends into civil war, anarchy, and violence. The rise of the Taliban, al-Qa'eda, and the road to 9/11 are foreseen by nobody, and no one is trying to stop them - except for one man. And his tragedy might be the saddest chapter of this unlucky country called Afghanistan.Sources: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/the-soviet-afghan-war-series-maps-and-sourcesAudible Recommendation: https://www.audible.com/pd/Return-of-a-King-Audiobook/1526640767?source_code=ASSGB149080119000H&share_location=pdpMusic:Winter Waltz by Scott Buckley | www.scottbuckley.com.auMusic promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY 4.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"Jihad" by LynnePublishing via Pond5.comPathfinder by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Desert City Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Jalandhar Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/
It was the first day of our project. It was also the first day on Mars. There were another forty-two days ahead of us, and every day, including today, we were faced with a different mission. These missions were going to get more challenging as we progressed. Our team consisted of a cryptographer, a navigator, a geologist, a mineralogist, a geochemist, a physicist, and even a futurist. So we were hopeful that we would successfully make it through this Mars Expedition: Sol 43 by Sergii Cherkasov and Lina Chykaliuk from Queensell.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/07/12/mars-expedition-sol-43-saturday-review/Useful LinksMars Expedition: Sol 43: https://queensell.com/pages/sol43Queensell: https://queensell.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/413868/mars-expedition-sol43Escape Room Puzzles review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/02/01/escape-room-puzzles-saturday-review/EXIT game series: https://store.thamesandkosmos.com/collections/exit-the-gameAdventure Games: The Dungeon review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/06/25/adventure-games-the-dungeon-saturday-review/Suspects review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/04/09/suspects-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)EGLAIR by Alex-Productions | https://onsound.eu/Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_USIncredulity by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/
The Soviets have decided that it's time to leave Afghanistan…but as we all know, it's much harder to get OUT of the graveyard of Empires than it is to get in. Battles still remain, as the Americans send Stinger missiles to the Mujahideen and the Soviets launch their last major attack in Operation Magistral. But the damage is already done: the USSR is on the brink of collapse, and the devastated country of Afghanistan is fertile ground for the rise of radical Islam.Sources: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/the-soviet-afghan-war-series-maps-and-sourcesNew Maps: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/the-soviet-afghan-war-series-maps-for-part-iiAudible Recommendation: https://www.audible.com/pd/Drink-Audiobook/1977339069?source_code=ASSGB149080119000H&share_location=pdpMusic:Winter Waltz by Scott Buckley | www.scottbuckley.com.auMusic promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY 4.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Bhangra Bass by Punch Deck | https://soundcloud.com/punch-deckMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US"Driving Atmospheric Dread" by EdwardCNBrown via pond5.comPathfinder by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

The Soviet-Afghan War reaches its climax from 1983 to 1985, as atrocities and destruction ravage the civilian population. The Mujahideen are starting to lose the war, but they have outside support: from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and even the United States, from people like Ronald Reagan and Charlie Wilson and Osama Bin Laden. International aid might tip the balance – but it also might unleash forces that no one can control. Through the Fair by Sláinte | https://freemusicarchive.org/music/SlinteMusic promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY-SA 3.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/Enthaltene MusikShelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (CreatorChords) | https://creatorchords.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Enchanted Forest by Alexander Nakarada (CreatorChords) | https://creatorchords.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/The Long Dark by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
The Soviet military, a powerful force designed for World War III, was not prepared for Afghanistan. The Russian bear was overstretched, fighting a dangerous, resilient enemy called the Mujahideen, with no way forward and no way out. Its weaknesses became most apparent in a place called the Panjshir Valley, where they faced the brilliant guerrilla leader Ahmad Shah Massoud - the Lion of Panjshir. In Part II of a five-part series, we examine the war from 1980 to 1982, especially the tactics, the strategy, and the nature of the Mujahideen.Sources: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/the-soviet-afghan-war-series-maps-and-sourcesNew Maps: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/the-soviet-afghan-war-series-maps-for-part-iiAudible Recommendation: https://www.audible.com/pd/We-Were-Soldiers-Once-and-Young-Audiobook/B07C9CFNBG?source_code=ASSGB149080119000H&share_location=pdpMusic:"Jihad" by LynnePublishing via Pond5.comhttps://music.orchestralis.net/track/38439579Pathfinder by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Bhangra Bass by Punch Deck | https://soundcloud.com/punch-deckMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US
Through the Fair by Sláinte | https://freemusicarchive.org/music/SlinteMusic promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY-SA 3.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/Enthaltene MusikNowhere Land by Alexander Nakarada (CreatorChords) | https://creatorchords.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Vetur Frosti by Alexander Nakarada (CreatorChords) | https://creatorchords.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Winter Waltz by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Through the Fair by Sláinte | https://freemusicarchive.org/music/SlinteMusic promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY-SA 3.0https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/Enthaltene MusikLight In Dark Places by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Cirrus by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Wayfarer by Alexander Nakarada (CreatorChords) | https://creatorchords.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

In the grand arena, two teams stepped onto the sacred battlefield, chosen by fate to clash in a relentless battle. The indomitable Dragon Hunters, descendants of war heroes who once battled the Dark Flame dragons, faced the elusive ninjas of the Hidden Temple, protectors of the grand Gang Port, who in turn would fight either the unyielding Guards of Witgat, heirs of a mountain tribe that endured the Celestial Fall, or The Institute, the largest team, yet the weakest individually, led by the enigmatic Professor. Each battle intertwined the opposing teams' fates and further shaped the future of the realm itself. Each clash was another chapter in the endless struggle of the Heroes of Timeline by Oleh Shyianovskyi from Heroes of Timeline Ltd with art from Victoria Novak.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/03/01/heroes-of-timeline-saturday-review/Useful LinksHeroes of Timeline: https://heroesoftimeline.com/Rulebook: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0798/8756/5147/files/Heroes_of_Timeline_-_Rulebook.pdf?v=1717258045Heroes of Timeline Ltd: https://heroesoftimeline.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/414994/heroes-of-timelineMusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Sound Effects: bbc.co.uk – © copyright 2025 BBCMusic by: Bensound.com/royalty-free-musicLicense code: IIWZGPBOW5ZSCHJCRide The Wind by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/If you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogKo-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/

Vikings were known for plundering, but what many people forget is that they also did a lot of trade. In fact, the Viking Era saw an increase in trade in the English Channel, the North Sea and the Baltic. There was one vessel that was specifically made for the exchange of large quantities of goods. It was a cargo ship with a shorter hull than the commonly known longships, which were mainly warships, and that had only a partial deck or sometimes none at all. It was specially adapted to the high seas to transport goods safely from shore to shore. To the Vikings, it was known as the Knarr by Thomas Dupont from Bombyx. We're joined on this morning's show by Mary Costello, whose new collection of short stories, Barcelona, has just been published by Canongate."Barcelona is full of devastating lines … Costello is working in the tradition of her literary heroes [Kafka, Musil, Coetzee]: delivering insights which are painful but also energising because of the beauty with which they're captured … The most impressive collection I've read in some time" JOHN SELF The Times"Clear-eyed and provocative, bruised and bruising: these are the stories of a writer at the very top of her game" EIMEAR MCBRIDE"It is rare that a writer of fiction can evoke such depth of feeling and visceral/moral revulsion as Mary Costello … in stories dealing with cruelty to animals, especially the slaughter of farm animals; rare that marital intimacy is so powerfully rendered" JOYCE CAROL OATES"Costello's writing is insistent, precise and unsparing. Everyday acts and ordinary lives are infused with a sense of the skull beneath the skin and of a catastrophe held tautly at bay" ObserverIntro/outro music: Colm Mac Con Iomaire, ‘Thou Shalt Not Carry' from The Hare's Corner, 2008, with thanks to Colm for permission to use it. A reading from My Darling Girl, set to music (with credit for its sweeping beauty to Scott Buckley, details below). This piece is a love letter to those times when we feel we might be drowning in the doubts that swirl around us.It begins...Sometimes we cross the river of doubt with ease, skipping across the stepping stones, landing softly on the other side. And sometimes we stare at the raging waters, wondering how we ever thought we could traverse them.Close your eyes, and see where the words and music take you. With loveHenny xMy Darling Girl is available to order here https://www.hennyflynn.co.uk/booksBeautiful Oblivion by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comAttribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Join the mailing list & receive the mini-course '3 little acts of self-compassion', completely free https://hennyflynn.ck.page/6e83d0227eExplore Henny's coaching, books, retreats, courses & events https://www.hennyflynn.co.uk/

In a short and sweet episode this week, I kick back and talk about an old rumor that went around in the early 2000s, involving Saddam Hussein stockpiling Playstation 2 consoles for military use. I also discuss some really cool technical moments for Sony consoles, and even try to ruin your childhood just a little bit by introducing you to a weird theory involving Disney's Aladdin from 1992.
