We were absolutely thrilled to sit down with internationally acclaimed yoga teacher and activist Seane Corn. Seane is a powerful force, known for her social impact, impassioned style of teaching, and raw, honest, self-expression. We take a deep dive into yoga and social justice, how it is impossible to separate our path as yogis from the core tenet of ahimsa (non-violence), the fact that generational trauma is often present in our deepest moments of activation, and how we might all use this moment in history as an opportunity to rise, rather than going backward. Seane has been such a profound spiritual teacher for both of us. She is the kind of leader who makes you want to show up and be better, and we know that you are going to be just as moved by her words as we were. You can learn more from Seane and practice with her through her online platform Revolution Within on her website at seanecorn.com or follow her on IG @seanecorn If you love the conversations we're bringing you as much as we do, please subscribe, rate and write a review so we can get the podcast out to even more people!
The work of uncovering your authentic self can be challenging because it means relinquishing control and feeling the difficult emotions we suppress. However, it's in the process of developing this kind of empathy for others that we begin to lead our most fulfilling life. Seane shares these and other lessons she's learned along her spiritual journey. She and Derik talk about her experience uncovering her own biases and the importance of accepting ourselves as humans who are both good and flawed as a way to start reckoning with systems of oppression and white supremacy. They also discuss Seane's social action work on and off the mat. Practice with Seane on Glo! Her all-levels ‘Elements of Flow' is a series of seven Vinyasa classes, 30 minutes each that focus on how to approach this powerful practice more mindfully. The core concepts include proper alignment, fluid transitions, and modifications.Links:Off the Mat: https://www.offthematintotheworld.orgSeane Corn's website: https://seanecorn.comRevolution of the Soul: https://seanecorn.com/book/Seane Corn on Glo: https://www.glo.com/teachers/seane-corn
Seane Corn shares her experiences with childhood trauma and sexual abuse, and how that put her on a path of self-discovery. Listen to Seane's story of growing up as a hypersensitive child with obsessive-compulsive behaviors that she used to manage her anxiety, pain, and grief, how she learned to process her emotions, and the teachers along the way that showed her how to release her anger and allow Seane to help others do the same. For Seane, growing up was complicated. On some levels, it could be considered the ideal childhood and at others, she felt unsafe, unprotected, and ungrounded. As a young person who was hypersensitive to the world Seane could feel when something was off. Due to the lack of support for her sensitivity and feelings, her natural reaction was to shut down and dissociate and create compulsive behaviors to try and regain control. Seane wouldn't change her experiences because those complexities were what made her do the work to become who she is now but she would prefer people like her had more mentors to show her the way. Seane's earliest memory of trauma was a sexual assault at the age of 6. As a result of that, she developed an obsessive-compulsive disorder which only became more exacerbated as she got older. What she wasn't aware of was those compulsive patterns were a way for her to self-regulate her nervous system. Any time she felt anxiety, the patterns helped her feel calm, and this self-regulating effort developed into drug and alcohol consumption later on in her life. These survival mechanisms were a response to a trauma that wasn't allowed space to discharge. It was once Seane moved away from home and lost her family support system that her random partying became more intensified. The patterning no longer staved off the anxiety and isolation, and drugs and alcohol became the only way to help her feel comfortable socially. Everyone in Seane's life has been a significant teacher, including her abuser. The reason that Seane has so much self-awareness at this point in her life is that she went into therapy at the age of 18 and did the work. It wasn't until she was in therapy that Seane even realized that the trauma of her childhood was the source of her compulsive behaviors. It was then that she understood that she was going to have to stop drinking and using drugs, to commit to sobriety at every level if she was going to heal. Your coping mechanisms work for a while but eventually they turn on you. They became the biggest obstacle from living the life you actually want. For Seane, the anxiety was always living in her body without ever being discharged or processed. This led to her always being triggered and seeking more control, which resulted in a vicious cycle of compulsive behavior. Sobriety is a lifelong journey. Seane's patterning still comes up, but when it does, she recognizes it as anxiety and a need to breathe through the grief that's underneath. Seane's low point occurred when she was bartending and high on drugs to the point where she was genuinely scared she might die. She never wanted to experience that again. Seeing other people die from overdosing became a vivid visual example of her destiny had she continued down that path. Seane's narrative continues to grow and evolve, even now. As a young person she just wanted to be liked and accepted, and love and hurt became synonymous. She had to work very hard to reclaim her love and beauty and separate it from her pain. The more that cultivate self-esteem, the more in relationship we will be to spirit. Otherwise, we look to the external world for validation and will never feel fulfilled. All the moments that invoke the shadow is what gives us fodder to learn about the light that teaches us patience, acceptance, and love. Life is a constant process of dismantling our identities so that we can continue to move into the right relationship with our highest essence. Your identities and narratives aren't bad. They serve a purpose and a part of the essential journey we are all on. Once we own our wound we can write the ending of our story. Until then, the wound will hijack your life. Seane is deeply grateful to be part of a community that is helping break the shame and pain that many people have. In a world damaged by trauma, many people are responding to hate with hate, and it's an important time to be able to show the world another way. If Seane could send back 140 characters to her younger self her message would be to simply cry. Her suppressed grief manifested into rage and other problems and she often wonders that if her younger self had space to cry would her path have changed. She would also want her to know that she will be okay and that pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice. Seane has two comeback story shoutouts. The first is her mother, as someone who showed her what a strong, independent, fiery woman could look like. The second is her teacher Mona Miller, who was the first person to teach her anger work and help Seane develop her relationship with God. The greatest changes in my life have always come out of the darkest moments. It feels awful going through it but with time and reflection, life’s adversities are necessary for personal growth. If any year is going to be a catalyst for global change in my lifetime, I’m guessing it’s going to be 2020. We have suffered collectively and yet each one of us have had vastly different experiences. 2021 is our opportunity to make great change. It’s our duty as yogis to not only live by example, but to recognize each one of our talents and use them to help guide others on their search for enlightenment. My hope is that through the alignment of ahimsa and veganism we can teach others that the unnecessary suffering and slaughter of other beings is at the root of our own suffering. This episode includes some of the most influential yogi and animal activists that I interviewed in 2020. I hope their words inspire others to begin their vegan journey, The following are excerpts from these episodes:Episode 62- Boho Beautiful’s Juliana and Mark SpiculokEpisode 41- Seane CornEpisode 39- Mathieu Boldron Episode 71- John JosephEpisode 60- James Aspey Episode 47- Ray IppolitoEpisode 36- Ana Forrest & Jose Calarco Episode 55- Tabay Atkins & Sahel Anvarinejad

Dive in and see what is the difference between both and find out how you can evolve to make a change.“Growth within can shift this world towards peace”What Seane’s life would be like without community and yoga: (00:17:41)Community and yoga are very important to Seane and she is convinced that her life would have gone in many other undesired directions without them. In the community she was very fortunate to come across “disguised angels” that helped her find her a practice and her path. There are many things we cannot change but we can change the perception to what is in a way that empowers our growth and builds our capacity for empathy and compassion.“There is not a single experience that can not open you to the depth of your love” The importance of holding ourselves accountable to our privileges (00:28:17)Seane recommends if you want to dismantle the systems that create oppression, you've got to dismantle the systems that exist within yourself. It was years of physical practice before Seane Corn woke up to the profound teachings of yoga. Like many, she started with poses on the mat as her end all and be all of the practice. But over time, little by little, the tension in her body chipped away to reveal deep levels of awareness. By titrating her nervous system through years of practice, Seane's body reached a point where it felt safe enough to release underlying emotions and trauma trapped in her tissues for decades. Utilizing the tools of yoga through its 8-limbs to living, Seane was able to release layers of her history and heal deep traumas of her past. In her latest book, "Revolution of the Soul: Awaken to Love through Raw Truth, Radical Healing and Conscious Action," Seane details her life story and shares the guiding wisdom that yoga lends to her as a dedicated practitioner. Seane is an internationally acclaimed yoga teacher, human and animal rights activist, and public speaker. In her 25-year teaching career, Seane has graced the covers of numerous magazines and raised millions of dollars for underserved populations. She has sat across from prolific leaders like Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra. Sean utilizes her platform as a means to bring awareness to global issues such as human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, social justice, and animal rights. As long time followers of this real-deal yogi, we are honored to be bringing her to the YT community today. In this conversation, we discuss the conundrum of the athlete and why our sport can be a drug of choice. We dive into the difference between discharging energy and healing as Seane shares her own experience with athletic training and the narrative it created in her life. She shares her powerful story to veganism and the need for her to be conscious across the board. Thank you for tuning in and supporting the show. We are on a mission to create a better world, and every single one of you is critical to that dream. There is so much wisdom in this conversation, trust that all you need will be available for you to take away and apply to your life. Namaste - Jess

Here I go baring my heart and introducing the soul of B.R.A.V.E. B.R.A.V.E. raises the consciousness of education through facilitating heart and soul transformation with educators - encouraging embodiment of bold, resilient, authentic, and vulnerable leadership. This is a call for the conscious revolution of education and a call to all of us educators to level up. Listen to my heart on this short episode! Weekly Questions What is transforming in you? What in your life needs to die off so the most of you can emerge? What are you becoming? Take a look at who you spend time with, what words you speak and with what energy, and how do you speak to yourself. Resources Marianne Williamson quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” https://marianne.com/ Seane Corn quote: “Change the people, Change the System” from CTZNWell Podcast EP 3: http://www.ctznwell.org/ctznpodcast/003-seane-corn Find more info on Seane at https://www.seanecorn.com/ and http://www.offthematintotheworld.org/seane-corn/ Follow B.R.A.V.E. on Instagram and Twitter @brave_educators and on Facebook @brave.educators Have questions or want to share your story on B.R.A.V.E.? Greetings Rainbow Warriors! I’m still in the middle of a forest in France, and ready for you to join me here in this Widerness Wellness Experience through June 23rd, anytime it’s convenient for you for as few or as many days as you wish. We’re in a 300 year old eco lodge and spa in the forest, surrounded by pristine nature, and I’m teaching yoga here twice a day. Check the show notes or my Visionary Lifestyle and Podcast Page for details on that. Our guest today is one of my sheros, the one and only, Seane Corn. Seane Corn is an internationally celebrated yoga teacher known for her impassioned activism, unique self-expression, and inspirational style of teaching. As a leading voice of Yoga and social change, Seane has been featured in countless media platforms across the globe. She has been seen on the cover of over 30 magazines and utilizes her national platform to bring awareness to global humanitarian issues. In 2005, she was named “National Yoga Ambassador” for YouthAIDS, and in 2013 was given the “Global Green International Environmental Leadership Award.” Since 2007, she has been training leaders of activism through her co-founded organization Off the Mat, Into the World®. Seane has spent time in the US, India, Cambodia, Haiti and Africa working with communities in need- teaching yoga, providing support for child labor and educating people about HIV/AIDS prevention. Seane is also co-founder of the Seva Challenge Humanitarian Tours, which have raised roughly $4 million since 2007, getting the yoga community involved in fund and awareness raising efforts across the globe. Her self-authored dvds are available through Gaiam and Yoga Journal, as well as her most recent groundbreaking 3-dvd set “The Yoga of Awakening” through Sounds True. She is currently working on her first book. I’m so excited to bring you this interview with one of my biggest sheroes! I met Seane back in 2011 when I invited her to join me teaching yoga in Los Angeles on 11/11/11 during the Occupy protest on the lawn at City Hall. She showed up in spades on that day, bringing her whole tribe from Off the Mat Into the World as well as organizing all the top yoga teachers in LA to join us. It was a phenomenal day that I’ll never forget. Make sure to check out the show notes for pics of that. I’ve interviewed Seane several times for different publications over the years because she stands, so firmly, for all the things I deeply care about. She is karma yoga in action. She is a huge role model for me and so many others. We recorded this interview last year in New York City at the United Nations on International Yoga Day where Seane was teaching a class to celebrate the occasion, with all my Rishikesh yoga tribe on site too. It was a truly spectacular day to be a yogi! And guys, we’re almost at that time again. This Summer Solstice, June 21st, will be the 4th International Day of Yoga! I’ll be teaching in France and would love love love for you to join me here to celebrate that and join a worldwide group of people who recognize the tremendous benefits of yoga. Seane and I deep dive here into what it means to be a yogi. I looooove this conversation and I just know you will find lots of inspiration in it too. She's blunt, brilliant, hilarious, and an abundance of wisdom. Seane Corn is a world renowned master yoga teacher, but to just call her a yoga teacher feels absurd. She is a provocative and moving public speaker. She's the founder of the nonprofit, Off the Mat Into the World, which has trained over 5,000 people in how to bridge personal transformation and social change. And she's about to be an author for her first book, which knowing her, will be a juicy “tell all” about her journey from spiritual practice to social action. But, what you will experience of Seane on this podcast, and what I know of her in person, is that she is relentless in her pursuit of truth and transformation.Follow Seane on InstagramBuy Seane’s Book Revolution of the SoulCheck out Seane’s website for upcoming eventsIf this episode resonates for you, we’d love for you to take a screenshot and tag us on Instagram stories @ctznwell and @seanecorn and click below to tweet:We can’t stand on the sidelines. Welcome to a very special show! This episode is monumental because this week marks the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of this Unclassified Woman podcast. It is also International Childfree Day on 1st August. This commenced in the USA in the 70's, to support and educate those who were consciously choosing not to have biological children. I’m honoured to share with you conversations with many self-empowered women around the world, blazing their own trails and embodying what it means to be a woman living her own truth. This has been a deeply reflective year for me as I have learnt so much from each of these women and been reminded of how there are so many variables in each woman's life. Sweeping generalisations are harmful and limiting to all women - so let's unite in supporting all women, whatever their life choices and circumstances. We have more in common than our differences and we all want to be loved and accepted for who we are. Today’s special show features an impactful woman and internationally celebrated yoga teacher, Seane Corn. I had the pleasure of hearing Seane speak in Sydney last year, and have wanted to have her on the podcast ever since. I was thrilled when she agreed and so today I share Seane's wisdom with you. Seane is known for her impassioned activism, unique self-expression, and inspirational teaching style. She has been featured in numerous media outlets, through which she brings awareness to global humanitarian issues. Since 2007, she has been training leaders in activism through her co-founded organisation, Off the Mat, Into the World. Seane has travelled across the world, teaching yoga and educating people about critical social issues. Her Global Seva Challenge has raised over $4 million since 2007. Let’s jump right into conversation with this inspiring woman who truly is making a positive difference across the globe. What you’ll hear in this episode: It was Seane’s personal decision to NOT have a child. As a girl, she never especially liked playing with babies or playing house. “I was comfortable with my decision, even though others weren’t.” How her decision brought a sense of relief. Her family understood that her career interests were her priority. Seane knew that her “mothering” instincts would be employed in different way. She encountered that age-old judgment: “You’ll never really know what love is unless you have a child.” How society measures and frames love in the context of marriage and motherhood. Seane’s frustration and irritation with society’s stereotypes and myths. “It’s better to NOT be a mother than to be a miserable mother!” Your position on motherhood depends on how you feel within yourself. Don’t let other people trigger you! Some people have NO sense of identity outside of parenthood. Seane knows that she can reach MANY children and make a LARGER impact with the life she has chosen. “I had to go and play in that field in order to know that I DON’T want this!” Attempting to get pregnant (one time) and not succeeding was her “line in the sand.” Seane’s total life and energy would be devoted to serving that soul if she had a child. Women have options and can be fulfilled in other ways. “Not having a child doesn’t make me ‘better than’ or ‘less than’.” The power of creativity comes in so many ways besides motherhood. How a non-biological parent has great value in the life of a stepchild. Seane's partner had custody of his children, so she is in a parenting role. Seane facilitates environments that shift energy through yoga. How Seane holds space for people in their emotional struggles. How Seane bridges the gap between yoga, social justice, and activation in social environments. The Nurturing Instinct How Seane can serve others more fully because she doesn’t have children. Why Seane is active in combating sex trafficking and exploitation of children Dialogue can create conversation and awareness. Why Seane doesn’t like the “childless” and “child-free” terminology. “Check in with yourself and DO the inner work. Meet others who walk the same path. There are many GOOD reasons NOT to have children.” Resources: www.seanecorn.com (Check out Seane’s website for DVD’s, programs, and other resources. Look for her book, coming out in Fall, 2017.) Thank you so much for listening to this episode. If you enjoyed then please share with another woman who would find beneficial. For more episodes check out michellemariemcgrath.com
