One of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in which 230,000 people perished, will be National Geographic's biggest docuseries of autumn, 'Tsunami: Race Against Time.'  This episode of Big Blend Radio features Barry Hirshorn, the seismologist who, in 2004, was tracking all the data as it trickled in. During the chaos, Hirshorn had to make sense of data so extreme as to be unreal. In 2004, Indian Ocean countries lacked the technology that could warn them, so Hirshorn knew that, based on his data, untold numbers of deaths were happening live. He raced to get the message to the remaining countries oblivious to the imminent calamity.   Premiering November 24, 2024, the series provides a 360-degree view into the heart-stopping events of 2004. It features personal accounts from survivors and scientists who raced against time to understand the catastrophe and warn the world. Told minute-by-minute through harrowing videos of survival – some seen for the first time – the four-part series offers an immersive look at the destructive wave as it surged across 14 countries.   TSUNAMI: RACE AGAINST TIME Premieres Across Two Nights, beginning Nov. 24, 2024 at 9/8c on National Geographic. She sees music as a way to help people understand the real threat of climate change.  “We need to feel angry about it,” she says. “We need pride in addressing it … instead of just despair at ‘what can I do?’ And so it is an emotional change we need in our society to really deal with climate change. And what is music but a way to inspire emotion?”

Increased geothermal activity on Mt Ruapehu is continuing.GeoNet raised the volcano's alert level to two yesterday. It reported a rise in the crater lake's temperature, tremors and one of the highest measured increases in volcanic gas.GNS duty seismologist Mike Rosenberg told Tim Dower not much has changed overnight, with small pulses of volcanic tremor ongoing."The activity sees the crater lake's temperature rise about one degree a day - and it's nothing unusual."Since 2007 the crater lake temperature has exceeded 40C a number of times, without leading to an eruption, however, the combination of the increased lake temperature, volcanic tremor and gas output have motivated the alert level change.GNS Science and the National Geohazards Monitoring Centre continues to closely monitor Mount Ruapehu for further signs of activity.LISTEN ABOVE

In this episode Frankie and Eric sit down with Ed Garnero. Bass player. Bass maker. Seismologist. Educator. Artist. Ed has been building basses from scratch since around 2015. Having gigged professionally for over 40 years, he was more recently driven to build his own out of curiosity as well as a dream of a specific feel and sound -- a rich and versatile sonic spectrum from an instrument in which the player feels the vibrations fully. During the day he is a professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, teaching and researching seismology, geophysics, and geological sciences. As a seismologist who studies seismic waves from earthquakes, Ed has been pursuing tuned resonance channels within the body and neck to "liven" as well as lighten instruments. That, combined with exploring local and sustainable woods, is at the core of his designs. Recently he has been moving towards an open source philosophy, and will be freely giving away his design plans. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bestbassgear/message

Series 2 Episode 2 sees Callam and Jim meet Dr Paula Koelemeijer, Global Seismologist and Royal Society University Research Fellow and Lecturer at Royal Holloway University of London. Paula studies the seismic activity of the Earth thousands of kilometres below the surface, but recent events much closer to home have had a surprising positive effect on her work. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and much of the world being in lockdown, Seismologists have been getting far clearer signals from within the Earth, because of less disruption from on top of it. Known as Anthropogenic Noise, the racket that humans make by working, travelling and moving around makes the work of those studying the Earth very difficult. With less noise comes significantly clearer signals - from which we can filter out the noise when it eventually returns. Oh, and we also talk about the earthquakes caused by Lionel Messi scoring, quakes on the Moon and Mars, using tremors to stop elephant poaching, and tracking the shakes caused by Rolling Stones concerts. It really is a wide conversation, this one! The Pint of Science podcast meets scientists and science writers at a safe social distance around the UK (and the rest of the world) to find out about their lives, their universe, and everything. Series 2 sees us target more topical stories and discuss the science around them. Like what we do? Let us know using the hashtag #pintcast. Last month’s 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Tennessee set off fresh questions about the potential for significant seismic activity occurring in the St. Louis region, which last saw earthquakes of magnitude 7 or larger in the early 19th century. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the New Madrid Seismic Zone "appears to be about 30 years overdue" for a magnitude 6.3 quake. But on Wednesday’s St. Louis on the Air, Washington University Professor of Seismology Michael Wysession suggested that a focus on flooding and tornadoes remains appropriate when it comes to disaster preparedness in the region.
