Next up on the Pearl Jam 2025 tour is a stop in Raleigh, North Carolina. This is a destination that hasn't been played since this show we're covering in 2003, but that was never originally planned to be the case. On the 2016 tour, a show in Raleigh was cancelled due to the band's opposition to the HB2 law that discriminated against transgender people. It was something that caused a bit of commotion within this fanbase, and we'll get into all of what happened nine years ago, but after the bill was overturned the band felt they needed to make it up to this Raleigh crowd. And if this 2003 show is any indication, they might be in for a good one. 2003 is a favorite tour year for many due to the band truly elevating their game to the next level. Setlists started to become very fan friendly and collector heavy, Mike McCready became the showman that we know of him today, and no two shows were even close to the same. If you like Riot Act heavy shows, this is a good one for you. The deeper cuts such as Help Help, Cropduster and You Are are brought out here and all sound fresh for the same. Save You, I Am Mine and Love Boat Captain are also major highlights from this show, and you can tell which ones are gonna stick around throughout the duration of this North American run. There's also a great run at this show featuring four straight Vitalogy era songs, and we'll get into why these songs together may feel like a mini rock opera. Check out the episode for the full rundown of the setlist, a little talk of what's been going on out on tour and a few stories from the Florida shows and the 2003 Evolution yips! In this video, we explore the evolution of Van Halen's concert setlists from their inaugural major tour in 1978 through their final performances in 2015. Drawing insights from Ultimate Classic Rock's article "Van Halen Set List Evolution: 1978-2015", we examine how the band's live song selections transformed over the decades, reflecting lineup changes, musical experimentation, and fan preferences. We'll look at how the band's early setlists focused on high-energy tracks from their debut album, how their song choices evolved with Sammy Hagar's arrival in 1985, and how later tours featured a mix of deep cuts, live debuts, and iconic hits. From "Runnin' With the Devil" and "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" to later live surprises like "Drop Dead Legs" and "Dirty Movies," Van Halen's setlists tell the story of a band that constantly evolved while staying true to its rock roots. Join us as we journey through Van Halen's live performance history, uncovering the stories behind their setlist choices and celebrating the band's enduring legacy in rock music.
In this episode, Ethan dives into the latest headlines, including a class action lawsuit against the rock band Tool after fans were disappointed by repeated songs during their sets at the Tool in the Sea festival in Punta Cana. Fans are furious after being promised two distinct sets without overlap. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods is reportedly dating Vanessa Trump, and the relationship has sparked plenty of intrigue, especially considering their shared ties to Florida. In entertainment news, comedian Nikki Glaser's first Golden Globes gig earned her a $400,000 payday, with more to come as she signs a three-year contract. On the business side, NBC Universal secures a massive $3 billion deal for the 2034 Winter Olympics and the 2036 Summer Games. But it's not all fun and games—legal action against the Girl Scouts alleges their cookies contain harmful substances like pesticides, heavy metals, and microplastics.
Have you ever had a Rock & Roll Fantasy? The Kinks did. So did Bad Company. And nobody hated Bad Company more than rock music's Stephen Sondheim. #FireElaineStritch Some Rock & Roll fantasies are quite dangerous, like the troubling, cancel-worthy ones Rick Rubin has about feet. ALLEGEDLY. But others are healthy enough to dream out loud, on, by any reasonable metric, one of America's most acclaimed podcasts. Inspired by an inspiring suggestion from longtime listener, Patreon supporter, and singer/songwriter, Montreal's own Max "Como" Comeau (which translates loosely in ‘Murican to "Max, how"?), Tony and T.J. dare to dream: what would have a Beatles reunion concert been like in the late 1970's? Would George wear his silly stache from his self titled LP? Would Paul arrive on a laconic boat from London Town? Would John bake bread as Yoko verbally assaults Chuck Berry? And would Ringo be sober enough to zug-zug his way from Monte Carlo to the venue? These questions will NOT be answered in this fairly insane excursion in to fantasyland - you'll thank us for the two drink minimum, folks - but don't fret; neither will these:

For Andrew McMahon, a singer-songwriter and cancer survivor, the act of forgetting an anniversary was a good thing. Alongside his band, Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, he was set to play the inaugural Adjacent festival on the beach in Atlantic City, New Jersey on May 27, part of a daily lineup that included Paramore, Jimmy Eat World and Bleachers. The date of the festival coincided with a landmark moment in his cancer journey, which began in 2005. Before the end of a tour as part of Jack's Mannequin, he received a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), for which he eventually underwent treatment with chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant. “About an hour and a half before the show, I'm working on the setlist,” McMahon told CURE®. “And every day, I do the setlist and then at the top of the setlist I put the city and the date. And I asked somebody, like, ‘What's the date today?' And they said, ‘It's the 27th,' then as I'm typing the date, I realize, ‘Oh, that's the anniversary of when I was put in the hospital.' “And we were in Atlantic City, and I had been between New Jersey and New York when I did the initial blood work that ended up leading to my hospitalization and eventually my diagnosis. Historically, that has been a very fraught anniversary for me. In the early years … even when I wouldn't realize the anniversary was coming up that weekend, inevitably, I was a mess. … So, being in a place now where I can actually forget those anniversaries, like they can almost pass me by and there's no trigger there, I'm on a healthy footing and that's pretty miraculous.” McMahon founded the Dear Jack Foundation in 2006. The organization supports young adult cancer patients and survivors “through programs that provide support and community to a demographic far too often forgotten,” according to the Dear Jack Foundation website. In this episode of the “Cancer Horizons” podcast, McMahon speaks with CURE® about life nearly 20 years after receiving his cancer diagnosis, shares the advice he has for patients who have recently received a diagnosis of their own and discusses his newfound love of surfing. “The beauty of surfing is that you just have to you take what you get, right? A lot of it is about learning how to understand what the natural environment around you is doing and then using that to get yourself into just about the greatest feeling that you can have on Earth, which is riding a wave,” McMahon said. “And so, I think it's been very good for me in the sense that it has really hammered home how valuable and how important it is to commune with the natural world. “And it's also one of just the very few spaces I can think of where whatever's happening in my life and whatever's going on in my business, or things that I might be worried about or afraid of, or whatever, I just don't carry those things into the water with me. And it's not really a conscious thing. It's just once I'm there, you're just present. And I definitely, at this stage of my life — I've always been pretty good about keeping the phone at bay, and I'm not a huge social media guy, I'm not so plugged in, but I'm way more plugged in than I have ever been in my life — having a space where nobody can reach me and I can just do something that so akin to just play playing, I think as adults we don't play as much as we ought to is really good for the brain and I've found a lot of peace in the water for sure.” For more news on cancer updates, research and education, don't forget to subscribe to CURE®'s newsletters here.

College internships can run the gamut. They can lead you into a career or dissuade you from pursuing one altogether. In 2004, while still attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, singer Rachael Price, bassist Bridget Kearney, guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson, and drummer Mike Calabrese joined forces to perform as what they dubbed a “free country band,” where they intended to play country music in an improvised, avant-garde style. As it goes with many college-years experiments, it didn't stick, but the fervid foursome pushed forward in continuing to develop their own sound. They quickly graduated to a bona fide band cultivating a buzz with infectious concerts, creative covers, and complex, groovy originals. Through their mutual influences and complimentary counterpoints, their sound matured into a harmonious fusion, as if Berry Gordy produced the Beatles in Nashville's RCA Studio. If starting a band and shaping their sound was an internship and bachelor's degree, self-releasing records and organizing U.S. tours would be their master's and doctorate. They self-released 2007's In This Episode... and 2008's Promises, Promisesbefore joining Signature Sounds, who put out 2010's Lake Street Dive and 2014's Bad Self Portraits. (The latter slotted them on the Billboard charts—No. 18 in the 200 and No. 5 in Top Rock Albums.) They then signed to Nonesuch, where they've dropped three more albums—most notably 2016's Side Pony, which put them atop the Top Rock Albums chart, while 2021's Obviously netted them their highest single, with “Hypotheticals” hitting No. 2 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. And while the band has continued to evolve, experiment, and expand their signature sound, they have kept to their core identity—having fun. They seem never to miss a Halloween dress-up show, and still aren't gun-shy about covering classics and making them their own. Setlists are often littered with audience requests and reinterpretations of the Beatles, Hall & Oates, George Michael, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis, Shania Twain, the Pointer Sisters, the Jackson Five, the Kinks, Steely Dan, Annie Lennox, Sly & the Family Stone, and countless others. The afternoon before their second consecutive sellout at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, Lake Street Dive's Bridget Kearney and James Cornelison welcomed PG's Chris Kies on stage for a casual gear chat. Kearney explained how she uses a pair of octave pedals through her standup double bass, and what she's doing with four tuners! Plus, she explains what restarted her slow-burn courtship with electric bass. Then, Cornelison walks us through his setup, which includes leftover pieces from cofounding guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson and a ratty pickup bought off a former PGstaffer. It both honors the band's catalog and carves his own musical fingerprint.Brought to you by D'Addario Nexxus 360 Tuner.

For as long as Phish fans have gathered to discuss and debate the band, the band's setlists have been a consistent talking point. What songs are in the rotation, how do jams in typically non-jamming slots affect a show, why were there so many bustouts in a single show, what's the thematic arc of the show? These topics and more have been analyzed by fans for decades—and we know it's been thought about extensively by the band as well. By way of The Baker's Dozen, Phish coalesced nearly 40 years of setlisting experimentations into a single run.In Undermine S3E3 we dive into the evolution of Phish setlists. Beginning with 1993's expanding catalog and 1994's irreverent experimentation, we walk listeners through the band's approach to crafting setlists based on the muse of the time. We discuss the approach to setlisting that separated the 3.0 era by way of 2012, and how comfortable and confident the band felt playing 13 shows with zero repeats by 2017. Beginning with a snapshot of Federal Donuts, we dive into one of the most unique aspects of The Baker's Dozen—the songs Phish played.Undermine is brought to you by Osiris Media.
