You ever have a doctor take photos of your condition for further examination? How about an MRI? Have you had one of those? We like to think that HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) protects us here in the US. But increasingly ... It doesn't.So over the next few weeks, we'll talk about who's collecting your medical information, how they're using it, and who they're sharing it with. And this series is wild because we're not only talking about pictures of that funny-looking mole you have. We're talking about the neural patterns of your brain and how it acts as you make decisions in Virtual Reality.First things first, though: This week, we're going to look at services like MyChart, Phreesia, and the MANY doctor's offices that utilize Facebook's Tracking Pixel on their website. We'll tell you how to stop these companies from collecting and sharing your data, and then we'll explain why you want to do that. I mean, unless you want a generative AI like Chat GPT3 to be looking at photos of your favorite private parts and drawing some really interesting conclusions to share with others. B.J. Mendelson, is a public speaker and author of the book, Social Media Is Bullshit. Mendelson first received attention in the early 2000s for being able to turn his financial struggles as a Millennial in The Great Recession into media coverage for himself with appearances in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times, and others. After building an unsuccessful national breast cancer outreach tour around the advice given by prominent social media marketers, and subsequent success in doing the same tour again the following year by using tactics he knew to work, B.J. went on to write a book called Social Media Is Bullshit based on his experience. He later earned additional media attention for frequently taking on prominent social media experts and companies. Mendelson has also appeared on MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Yahoo! News, the CBC, TechCrunch, The Huffington Post, and numerous other national outlets to talk about these myths and who actually benefits from the hype. B.J. Mendelson founded Earth's Temporary Solution in his dorm room at Alfred State College during the Fall of 2001. He would later miss the 2002-2003 academic school year at Alfred to handle booking and promote fifty-five sold out shows across the East Coast during that time. The shows were sold out using almost exclusively online marketing tactics and offline networking.

If you've ever goofed off at work, or walked through your office and witnessed co-workers browsing YouTube, you're not alone. In this episode, Rosie Tran and BJ Mendelson get to the heart of the matter: the bullshitization of work. Deeply influenced by David Graeber's book "Bullshit Jobs: A Theory," the two co-hosts discuss the arbitrary eight-hour work day and outdated notions of "hard work" passed down from the Baby Boomers. They suggest that jobs have taken the place of religion as the foundation for forming identity and self-worth. Resources for Saving the World
Crime is declining in the US, but the prison population is increasing. Co-hosts Rosie Tran and BJ Mendelson agree the for-profit prison system is out of control. In this episode, they critique our current prison system and offer solutions to fix it. Resources for Saving the World
Students are consistently told that earning a Bachelor's degree is the path to successful adulthood. But, according to a 2018 survey, about 30% of all US adults have student debt. In this episode, hosts Rosie and BJ dive into the student loan crisis and offer solutions for how future students can avoid paying too much for college. They believe college corporatization is behind much of the student debt bubble. Because student loans cannot be discharged to bankruptcy, graduates must struggle underneath all the debt until it's paid off — or until they die. Resources for Saving the World
In the premiere episode of Rosie & BJ Save the World, comedian and podcaster, Rosie Tran, alongside social media marketing expert, and best selling author, BJ Mendelson, share their views on ending the war on drugs. Get ready listeners, BJ and Rosie are here to save the day. Rosie is in favor of decriminalizing drug use as a means to end drug addiction. She cites Portugal's "use rooms" as an example of state-sanctioned drug use that actually decreases usage and helps those suffering from addiction to seek rehabilitation. Batman the Animated Series is apparently a huge part of a ton of childhoods. Except mine, because I somehow kept missing it. But from giving characters much better back stories to creating a few characters that we couldn’t imagine not having today to just being objectively awesome, it’s an important part of today’s Batman culture. So of course it had a game to go with it. BJ Mendelson (@bjmendelson) is author of Privacy: And How to Get it Back. One of the key themes we've been exploring on Love Your Work over the past three years has been just how it is that creators get paid. This was certainly top of my mind when I doubled down on writing and podcasting and moved to Colombia with no clear business model in site. To understand how creators get paid, we need to understand the entire economy of content. How does content get monetized, and how much or how little of that monetization makes it to creators? We've talked about how the economics of content shape technology in my essay on the Behavioral Revolution. We've talked about how those economics promote digital distraction in conversations with Hooked author, Nir Eyal. We've talked about new models for monetization – such as cryptocurrency-based compensation – with Steemit CEO Ned Scott, and with Maneesh Sethi from Pavlok. Today, we're going to dig into privacy. When you understand how your privacy is being invaded to keep the web running, it becomes more clear just where things will be going in the future, and what you can do as both a creator and consumer of content to make that a bright future for yourself and your fellow creator. In this conversation, we'll learn: What are the ways that our privacy is invaded to keep the web running. Why does it matter? What can you do to protect your privacy, and encourage companies to search for other ways to monetize? Is the online advertising industry in for a day of reckoning? What trends should you, as a creative entrepreneur, be aware of? Love Your Work is now fully listener-supported! Patreon supporters are now covering ALL production costs for Love Your Work! This week BJ Mendelson joins the Nation of Conversation! He’s an author and comic book writer and he's got tons of thoughts on everything that happened in wrestling this week, from the pull-apart brawl between Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley to the continued reunion between Daniel Bryan and Kane as Team Hell No. Plus, a closer look at the next phase of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa’s feud in NXT, who BJ thinks may be better than Paul Heyman on the mic and Danielle explains to the team what the Aztec Medallions of Lucha Underground are. The Main Event A few weeks ago, WWE promoted a special encounter between the New Day and New Japan’s The Elite. Sure it was a Street Fighter V competition at E3, but afterwards, Triple H said that the company is open to a cross-promotional show with New Japan. But how likely is such a meeting to REALLY happen? And what would we like to see go down at this hypothetical event? The Three Count BJ put over Fantasy Super Cosplay Wrestling. Danielle put over Episode 8 of Season 2 of GLOW. Mike put over Robbie E’s podcast Why it Ended. Hal put over the recent segment on Smackdown that featured Rusev on commentary. Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford, Mike Eagle and BJ Mendelson. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The use of our data and the privacy, or lack thereof, that we have when we go online has become a topic of increasing importance as technology becomes ubiquitous and more sophisticated. Governments, advocacy groups and individual citizens are demanding that action be taken to protect their valuable data. But what does this sporadic noise amount to? B.J. Mendelson in his book Privacy: And How to Get It Back (Curious Reads, 2017) argues that a complacent citizenry and the overly-intimate relationship that corporations have with government has led to massive breaches of people’s privacy. Mendelson humorously explains the way people’s data is used and abused as he tracks the long history of government surveillance leading to an explanation of, what he believes, could be the solution to the abuse of people’s privacy. We welcome author, speaker, and comedian B.J. Mendelson to first help us look back into pop culture history in this week’s Retro Roundtable. It was this week in 1993 that Brandon Lee was fatally shot on the set of The Crow, so we remember some of the worst accidents to ever happen on the sets of movies and television shows. Films like The Twilight Zone Movie and Top Gun are among the mentioned, but did you know that Brandon lee wasn’t the only actor the be killed onset with a stun gun firing blanks? What about the movie Milo & Otis, remember this adorable movie? You won’t want to after you hear the disturbing truth behind its production. We then turn our attention to B.J. to discuss his comic, Vengeance, Nevada. Vengeance, Nevada is a wild, superhero-horror adventure set in the American West that explores the questions, “What if you got everything you ever wanted and what would that sudden power do to a person? His books include Social Media Is Bullshit from St. Martin’s Press and Privacy: And How We Can Get It Back from Curious Reads. Mendelson first received attention in the late 2000s for turning his financial struggles during The Great Recession into media coverage with appearances in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times, and others. After building an unsuccessful national breast cancer outreach tour around the advice given by prominent social media marketers — and subsequent success in doing the same tour again the following year by doing the exact opposite of their advice — B.J. went on to write a book called Social Media Is Bullshit based on his experience. He later earned additional media attention for frequently taking on prominent social media experts and companies. Since 2012, B.J. Mendelson has made presentations at the National Automotive Dealers Association Conference, South By Southwest, Social Media Week: Chicago, The Do Lectures in the U.K., R.O.A.D. in Moscow, the Word of Mouth Marketing Association Summit, Social Media Explorer, and various other events to talk about the many myths peddled by social media marketers and what really works online and off. He appeared at the United Nations to debate the ambassador to Pakistan, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, about the effects of social media on society and its involvement in political revolutions. Mendelson has also appeared on MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, Yahoo! News, the CBC, TechCrunch, The Huffington Post, and numerous other national outlets to talk about these myths and who actually benefits from the hype. B.J. is also one-half of the creative team behind, “Vengeance, Nevada” and “A National Story of Minor Significance.” Both comics will soon be available through Amazon’s popular Comixology platform.

Welcome to episode #324 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. When you publish a book called, Social Media Is Bullshit, it is bound to get some attention (and, some dirty looks, I'm sure). B.J. Mendelson (also known as Brandon) doesn't hold any punches in this book. He says that, "we live in a world where it's far easier to make money telling people how to get rich using the Internet than it is to actually get rich using it." Is Brandon wrong? It's not so cut and dry. On one hand, we do live in a world where any one individual can get a whole bunch of followers and suddenly proclaim themselves as some kind of wizard, but - on the other hand - it's hard to imagine that Brandon would have been as attractive to a traditional book publisher if he didn't have close to 800,000 followers on Twitter. Which, in and of itself, is a part of the issues and challenges that we discuss in this episode. Ultimately, the truth may come when Brandon shuts down all of his social media outposts, and can still sell books and create a viable business without them. Enjoy the conversation...
