The IOC welcomed this sustainable approach. In 2034, around a dozen venues will be used—all within an hour's drive of the Athlete Village on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. The caretaker of many of the venues is the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation. President and CEO Colin Hilton talks about the Utah Olympic Park, with its bobsled, skeleton, and luge sliding track, as well as the towering ski jumps. Hilton also oversaw the assembling of all venues for the 2034 bid and will give an overview of what we can expect. One of the most popular Olympic sports today is biathlon – an unusual combination of cross country skiing and marksmanship. Utah native Vincent Bonacci, a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team, will talk about the sport, its uniqueness and why the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center is such a vital venue. We'll then head to the sliding track at the Utah Olympic Park – known as one of the fastest in the world. Utah native Kaysha Love will talk about how she went from a top-tier high school and collegiate sprinter to becoming one of the best bobsledders in the world in just a few years. Finally, we'll talk about winning Olympic gold with 500m long-track speedskating star Erin Jackson. A Florida native, Jackson talks about her transition from inline skating to ice, tells the story about her improbable journey to Beijing to win gold, and relates (with a smile) her weekend ski experience at Deer Valley Resort.

He was getting so excited, pointing out of the office windows out to the ice, talking about the crowd and the excitement, this was electric. Most people don't know what Derek had to go through to get there, and his story is absolutely captivating, as he wrote in his book, Reflections In The Ice. Being introduced to roller skating races to win a soda because he was thirsty. Eating stale food because he was hungry.  Transferring from roller to ice so that he could represent his country in the Olympic Games. Making it to Nagano in '98, only to be told THE NIGHT BEFORE THE RACE that due to a technically in timing in a qualifying race, that he couldn't skate. And then.... He stepped out onto his home ice in 2002. And...... He was the first ever Latino to win gold in the Winter Olympics. The event has been skated faster since then. “I was scared to be nervous. I was ashamed of those feelings going around in my head.”While often your physical performance is seemingly the most apparent aspect of your functioning, the mental side is not to be underestimated, especially when it comes to the influence this has on your ability to achieve your goals. Dutch speed skater Kjeld Nuis has been on both sides of the coin and experienced what a difference mental fitness makes when it comes to winning. In this episode Kjeld recalls the career crossroads that inspired him to include mental training into his routine and reflects on the positive influence it had on his global success. Not everyone aims to break a world record, but this ability of recognising and accepting emotions is also hugely beneficial in everyday life as well. Hosts Cèdric and York approach this topic with a clear and simple exercise – the MAC method. This stands for Mindfulness – Acceptance – Commitment. The first step is to become mindful of your emotions. Try to identify and label the emotions you're feeling – an easier task than it sounds!Secondly, accept that this is the emotion you're feeling at this moment. Ask yourself where that emotion came from and why. Finally, committing to these emotions means not being ashamed of feeling them but rather sharing your experience with people you trust.Lastly, remember that being able to identify and understand an emotion you're feeling in a particular situation is already the biggest step towards utilising it to positive effect. What do you think? Foolishly, I suppose, we thought FOR SURE Brooke McEldowney would make some reference to Halloween in his strip over the years. At the very least, we were expecting the female characters to be dressed as sexy somethings -- painters? pilots? poop emojis? -- but McEldowney gave us nothing. So we soldiered on and explored a half dozen or so strips that ran on Halloween. Edda writes an incomprehensible sentence on the chalkboard. Thorax either milks a cow or breaks up with it. Both seem equally possible. Edda finds some confidence only to have a friend tell her to "drop dead." A former nun (Diane) and Catholic priest (Francis) get married, which fogs up another nun's glasses. Thorax becomes "shadow president" and for some reason a chicken reads three teleprompters that all say "cluck." Amos & Edda's relationship is tested when Amos accidentally kisses Xiulan, a fellow cellist who is also a pilot, because of course she is. Finally, Edda does a solo ballet dance that's interrupted by a dog putting his nose in her butt. Mostly, we end up spending a lot of time at an insufferable dinner party with Brooke McEldowney. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: The vexing chalkboard, magnificent cow, and Drop Dead Janice are here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1583844780823322626?s=20&t=kuoU5Slu_SoVFwnXWhY_tQ). This episode's not very spooky journey includes: Meditation 2-liter bottles Rocket launch Space X Elon Musk Plumbers Halloween decorations Edda Cows Thorax The Bechdel Test Janice, Edda's friend from the ballet company Diane & Francis Sister Steven / Sister Caligula Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart films Yet another ellipsis problem Shadow governments Teleprompter Tony Orlando & Dawn Amos, Edda, & Xiulan Showgirls Speed skating, ballet, or modern dance? Not a sexy poop emoji costume, but a sexy pope costume (https://www.yandy.com/products/yandy-shining-bright-pope-costume). Does this comic strip pass The Bechdel Test (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechdel_test)? Probably not. For context, this is Caligula (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Caligula-Roman-emperor). About This Episode: At 39, Duff Gibson became the oldest Canadian gold medalist in the history of the Winter Olympics when he became champion at the Men's Skeleton event at the 2006 Games, as well as becoming the oldest individual gold medalist ever in the Winter Games. He also holds the distinction of being Canada's only gold medalist in the sport. Sport was an important part of his youth, and he dabbled in ice hockey and wrestling before settling on rowing while attending the University of Western Ontario and Speed Skating at the University of Calgary. He later pursued bobsled and luge and only took up skeleton at the age of 33 and began professional competition in 2000. Although he won bronze at the 2002 World Cup, he placed 10th at the competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Between this and the 2006 Olympics, Gibson improved, placing second in the 2003-2004 World Cup standings, winning gold at the 2004 World Championships and bronze at the 2005 Championships.
