In this episode, E.G. Marshall dives into the deep and often unsettling themes of evil, identity, and the darkness that can lurk within human nature. The narrative begins on a dark, cold evening, setting a foreboding tone. Marshall introduces the concept of evil, stating that it exists within us all and presenting a thought-provoking definition from the dictionary: anything that impairs happiness or welfare, depriving one of good. He challenges listeners to reflect on their own experiences, suggesting that anyone has the capacity for evil, igniting a philosophical exploration of morality and the human condition. As the episode unfolds, we are treated to a dramatic reading titled "The Evil Eye," written by Elspeth Eric, featuring characters that exemplify both the creative struggle and the complex dynamics within relationships. The main character, Louise Bates, is introduced as a successful female writer grappling with her self-worth and the pressures of the literary world. Her frustrations boil over upon learning that her rival, Vanita Barlow, has received a lucrative book deal, sparking jealousy and dark thoughts within her. The tension escalates as Louise expresses a potential wish for harm towards those she perceives as threats to her success. The story delves into the chaotic environment that Louise inhabits, highlighting her intense need for solitude and the lengths she goes to create. Her husband, John Bates, often becomes a victim of her creative demands and tumultuous feelings, showcasing the strain that ambition can place on personal relationships. Their interactions reveal a poignant dynamic between support and resentment, as John attempts to be the anchor in the chaos of Louise's artistic life, but often feels overwhelmed and inadequate. In a turn of events, Louise receives devastating news about both Vanita Barlow and Stephen Bennett, another character whose desperation and connection to Louise's creative struggles lead to a dangerous spiral. The juxtaposition of Louise's artistic awakening against the backdrop of tragedy raises questions about the consequences of one's ambitions, the ripple effects of jealousy, and the nature of evil itself. As Louise discovers her ‘power' through her writing—a metaphorical ‘evil eye'—the boundaries between inspiration and destruction blur, suggesting that creators may wield more influence over their surroundings than they comprehend. The episode blends elements of suspense and drama, as it weaves through themes of power dynamics in relationships and the existential crises that often accompany creative endeavors. As the finale approaches, we witness the ultimate manifestation of Louise's artistic struggle and the moral complexities that surround her choices, culminating in a chilling reflection on the ease with which one may stray into moral darkness.Through Marshall's introspective narration, the audience is left pondering the deeper meanings of evil and the choices we make every day. The story challenges us to confront our own potential for darkness while weaving a cautionary tale about the costs of ambition, the fragility of human connections, and the thin line between creation and destruction.

Belvoir Castle garden show organiser Andy Tudbury knows a thing or two about garden shows having completed 28 in his career. He set up the Belvoir show four years ago and has been advised by shows expert Stephen Bennett to keep the quality high including, he jokes, running the "garden show with the cleanest toilets in Britain".The 2022 show is on 16-17 July and is the longest continuous garden show in UK having traded through the pandemic. Tudbury explains how the "jigsaw" of stands, ticket sales and attractions add up to make the event viable.Tudbury's expects a bumper year with a record number of applications (42) for garden designs will be showcased at the event. Matt Thomas has won several international fingerstyle guitar competitions (twice in "contemporary thumbpicking" and once in "open style"), is an avid harp-guitar player, and has played with some of the biggest names in the acoustic guitar world (Tommy Emmanuel, Stephen Bennet, and many more). Aaron Sefchick and Joe McMurray talk to Matt about his personal journey, fingerstyle techniques, acoustic pickup systems, recording, and gigging. In part 1 of 2, Matt tells the guys about meeting Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee, and Stephen Bennett at a harp guitar convention when he was a teenager. He then goes on to explain and demonstrate percussive methods on the acoustic guitar: the use of thumb slaps on the 2 and 4, a palm kick on the 1 and 3, and a palm kick on the 2 and 4. Matt gets deep into the details of amplifying acoustic guitars. He tells Joe and Aaron about Tommy Emmanuel's setup with a Maton guitar and AER amp. He talks about sound hole pickups, magnetic pickups for running effects, and transducer pickups. The conversation shifts to Matt's experience recording with Kim Person (who has also recorded Tommy Emmanuel and Stephen Bennett), and her approach to recording acoustic instruments. The guys talk about practicing their instruments and the need to practice properly to avoid injury. Finally (for part 1 of 2), Matt talks about some modern guitar players who use effects and multiple pickup systems to create some very unique music. Those players include Alexandr Misko, Adrian Belew, and Petteri Sariola. Guest: Stephen Bennett, Founder and Chief Operating Officer at Riskpulse Your package is shipped, but it is still 3 days out...3 days of traversing through weather to get to you. Will storms cause a delay? Does the product need refrigeration? Can the product be left out in the cold? What if the answers to these questions started before the order went out for shipping? Taking the weather forecast into account - charting and changing the way your package gets delivered...it could mean big savings for you and companies. Well...this technology exists and Stephen Bennett, Founder and Chief Operating Officer for Riskpulse if here to tell us all about it.
Joe and Aaron bring in guitarist and vocalist, Dustin Furlow, to discuss all things fingerstyle guitar. The guys talk about influential fingerstyle guitarists including Tommy Emmanuel, Stephen Bennett (harp guitar), Andy McKee, Tony McManus, Garreth Pearson, Don Ross, Mike Dawes, Adam Rafferty, Adrian Legg, Alexander Misko, and Matt Thomas. They look into approaches to choosing the right keys for solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements, as well as alternate tunings such as DADGAD and open D tuning. The guys dive seriously into the details of nail maintenance and acrylic gel nails for fingerpicking. Dustin, with his wealth of experience playing and performing with high end acoustic guitars, explains the benefits and downsides of many types of guitars, especially as they relate to fingerstyle guitar playing. They look at the differences in sound and playability of Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Larrivee, and Beneteau guitars, as well as choosing the right pickups and pre-amps to get the best live amplified sound. dustinfurlow.com for more information

Early 2018 Stephen Bennett was a guest on The Sodshow. Stephen had, he told Peter Donegan, started a new journey working alongside Royal Ascot. Better famed for their race meetings a new garden show was about to give birth and the voices you hear are just 20 of the growers, nurserys, designers and trades that were there over that weekend. If I'm honest, I ddn't have to do this but I've personally felt the pinch and the knock on effect of 2018's adverse weather and it's important if only to me, that new garden shows and those who smile always as I walk through the gates get a little of the availble air time. I'm glad I did and as with all of The Sodshow episodes, this one made me smile. Subscribe to The Sodshow in iTunes, all good podcast stores and via www.sodshow.com My hope, is that for the first time ever, you may get to hear that voice and what they do. That you may then like what you hear and maybe fingers crossed we will meet in 2019 at year 2 of Ascot Spring Garden Show and armed with a photo of that voice you heard and liked, support them. As always, very much thank you for listening. Jan opens with Jill Martin Rische reporting on the holocaust affecting white farmers in South Africa. Then former homosexual Stephen Bennett says that the final frontier of the gay agenda is to seduce the church and get it on board with acceptance of homosexuality and transgenderism. And they are winning. Many denominations now celebrate this diversity. Hear a stunning apology from some church leaders. We use the mobile app found at www.oneplace.com. A sound designer takes advantage of the huge variety of noises we hear in our everyday lives, thinking of experimental ways to create an audio environment that supports on-screen action and engages audiences. Multi award winning sound designer and dubbing mixer John Cobban joined a small group of students and career starters to discuss his craft and career highlights spanning 25 years of crafting sound for numerous films, documentaries, dramas and animations, including Murder, Eve, Two Doors Down and latest BBC hit The Replacement. Tony Karol has been a luthier (guitar maker) for over 25 years. The guitars he has built have been used by internationally known musicians like Tommy Emmanuel, Bruce Cockburn, and Stephen Bennett. In this episode we discuss building guitars, how Tony got his start, working with well know musicians, and the environmental impact of building guitars. At age 12, Tony began to play the guitar, something he fell in love with immediately. Thirty-plus years later and he still enjoys playing and learning. It wasn't long before he wanted a better instrument, but couldn't afford to buy one. With the help of his high school wood-shop teacher he made an electric guitar body. He had found my passion in life - building and modifying guitars to achieve the utmost in appearance and performance. It was a few years later that he first saw a Larrivee acoustic guitar - a handmade cutaway model with astonishing inlay work. Beyond the look and beauty of the guitar, he was taken more so by the sound - it was stunningly beautiful. It played like a dream with its smooth low action - unlike most other acoustic steel strings he had ever played. Tony knew that someday he had to have one and that someday he would build one ...Building all instruments solo in his shop, he creates between 8 and 10 works of art per year. Each guitar is built one at a time, carefully selecting and shaping each part to bring the best out of the materials chosen.Website: http://www.karol-guitars.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tony.karol.96Twitter: https://twitter.com/KarolGuitars
