“In particular, this must include: (1) the complete description of all data used for training, including (if used) of unshareable data, disclosing the provenance of the data, its scope and characteristics, how the data was obtained and selected, the labeling procedures, and data processing and filtering methodologies; (2) a listing of all publicly available training data and where to obtain it; and (3) a listing of all training data obtainable from third parties and where to obtain it, including for fee.” Brandon had a chance to sit down with Preston Sprinkle and dive into all things global orphan care and discuss the realities of that children in orphanages face worldwide. Our conversation weaves between a theology of calling and mission and how American Christians intersect with orphans in the Global South. We discuss the reality of life within orphanages, why kids end up there and what risk factors and vulnerabilities arise when kids are raised in that environment. This is a good Ethical Orphan Care 101 type episode and we're grateful for the chance to collaborate with Theology in the Raw to raise awareness and education. Before joining 1MILLIONHOME, he led a family based care and advocacy program in Tanzania for several years. He has his Master's Degree in Global Development and Justice and is passionate about indigenous leadership, community mobilization and seeing global entities come together to deliver the best care for at risk children.Today we're going to dive deep into an aspect of the work involving care of orphans and vulnerable children that doesn't often get talked about.  For those of us in what we call “the sector” we talk a lot about the research, and the nuts and bolts of getting kids home, transitioning residential programs like orphanages into models that prioritize family care, engaging with donors, missioners and others in shifting the model and shifting the mindset.  That's all really important stuff.  What we don't spend a lot of time talking about is the motivations for getting involved in orphan care in the first place.  We cite the scriptural language we all know - James 1:27, Psalms 68:6,etc.  Today I want to get into something a little more spiritual - the idea of being “called - by God” specifically to this work.  If you talk to people in this space, including those who have built and supported orphanages, they will often tell you that they have answered a “calling.”  As we are coming to understand that orphanages are not the best place for children to grow up, how are we to think about having received a calling that prompted us to build or support an orphanage?  How are we to reconcile these seemingly conflicting ideas?Helpingchildrenworldwide.org

Are orphanages helping orphans? Most Christians would say: obviously yes. But Brandon, who's been working in orphan care for over a decade, says that they are actually perpetuating a system of care that is ultimately not helpful for orphans. Kids belong in families, and there are many other more healthy ways to help kids be raised in a family.  Brandon is the senior director of global programs and partnerships for 1MILLIONHOME–an organization aimed at revolutionizing orphan care through broadly shifting mindsets and scaling up proven community-based models that reunite children with families and eradicate practices that lead to family separation. Brandon has worked in the child welfare and nonprofit sectors for over twelve years. Before joining 1MILLIONHOME, he led a family based care and advocacy program in Tanzania for several years. Brandon has also worked at a Tanzanian orphanage, in the Californian foster care system, at various churches and teaches on issues facing at risk children at the university level. One Minute Retirement Tip with Ashley

The theme this week on the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast is: 5 Lessons from the book: From Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks Today, I'm talking about the Stiver's Curse, which is one of the first lessons you'll come across if you read this book. The striver's curse is the torture that people experience who strive to be excellent at what they do, who “often wind up finding their inevitable decline terrifying, their successes increasingly unsatisfying, and their relationships lacking.”  Even if they've previously made it and were held in high esteem by their peers and colleagues, many strivers find that at some point they start to feel irrelevant, and as the author points out: “if you attain excellence and are deeply invested in it, you can feel pretty irrelevant when you inevitably fall from those heights. And that is agony.” This is the striver's curse.  A former CEO interviewed for the book lamented after his retirement:“In just six months I went from ‘Who's Who' to ‘Who's He?” One of the things that surprised me the most as I was reading this book is that this decline starts to set in earlier than we think. Later this week, I'll talk more about what's really happening in our brains that's causing this decline, but according to research, “In in practically every high-skill profession, decline sets in sometime between one's late thirties and early fifties.” The difficult truth is that most of you listening are likely many years past your prime in your career. And no matter how hard you might push back, there's nothing you can do to stop this decline.  For financial professionals, like myself, peak performance happens between the ages of thirty-six and forty. I'm 37, so I've only got 3 more years apparently before I can expect some of my mental sharpness to begin to fade. And considering that I've lost collectively about 2 years of sleep from having small children the last 8 years, there's a good chance I'm already over the hill in my career.  One of the most interesting stats in the book is on doctors: “they appear to peak in their thirties, with steep drop offs in skill as the years pass. It's sort of reassuring to have [an older and more experienced doctor]. However, one recent Canadian study looked at 80 percent of the country's anesthesiologists and patient litigation against them over a ten-year period. The researchers found that physicians over sixty-five are 50 percent more likely than younger doctors (under fifty-one) at being found at fault for malpractice. So the first step is to recognize that decline is a natural and part of aging, and it happens to everyone, no matter how smart or healthy we are. Denying this inevitable decline will only lead to frustration, but embracing this decline will open our eyes to strengths we develop as we age, strengths that if embraced and nurtured can bring happiness, meaning, and fulfillment in the second half of life.  That's why the book is called “from strength to strength” - because it's about going from your old strengths to new strengths seamlessly.  If you're intrigued by the book and you'd like a free copy, keep listening because I'll share with you later this week how you can win a free copy of the book.  That's it for today. The election of Donald Trump was surprising, but, once people began to explain why they voted the way the did, it became understandable. What hasn't been understandable, however, is the subsequent devotion to him by white evangelicals. His past and continuing lifestyle is so at odds with the things white evangelicals have publicly professed to value. This devotion seems different from the type of hero status given to President Reagan or the support given to any incumbent Republican president considered the most likely to advance the Christian Republican religious and political agenda. The devotion being expressed goes beyond these, seemingly to elevate Trump to the status of God's chosen and thus an almost Messianic position. My guest today, Dr. Dan Stiver, believes this devotion to Trump by white evangelicals is, in part, rooted in their approach to understanding and interpreting the Bible. Dan helps us understand this white evangelical hermeneutic and then offers us an alternative and a way forward drawing from the insights of Christian philosopher Paul Ricoeur. Dr. Stiver came to Logsdon Seminary of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, in 1998 from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he taught Christian philosophy for 14 years. His books include The Philosophy of Religious Language: Sign, Symbol, and Story (1996) Theology after Ricoeur: New Directions in Hermeneutical Theology (2001), Life Together in the Way of Jesus Christ: An Introduction to Christian Theology (2009), and Ricoeur and Theology (2012). He has served as pastor in Missouri and Indiana and as chair of the board for the non-profit organization Just People. The Good Problem

Today's conversation is a topic very close to my own heart, and one that's formed a core part of my professional career: children living in orphanages. The evidence tells us that growing up in an orphanage is harmful, yet it's still happening at scale with millions of children globally stuck in institutions. A key fact that I want to continue to drive home is that the idea that there are millions of orphans in orphanages waiting for the love, care and attention of well meaning foreigners is a myth. These children have families. In fact, anywhere between 70 and 90% of them have one or more living parents who with support, would be willing and able to care for them. Orphanages are harmful and result in the unnecessary separation of children from their families. It's a complex, and often emotive issue. There's no single driver for children ending up in orphanages, there are many: trafficking, exploitation, poverty, abuse, neglect, child protections systems that don't function, and the insatiable desire to do good among those more fortunate. I've invited Brandon Stiver onto today's podcast to unpack these issues with me. Brandon is the Community of practice director at 1MillionHome, an organisation that works to shift mindsets about orphan care and scale community based care models that reunite children with families and eradicate practices that lead to family separation. Brandon is also an evangelical Christian who was called to work in an orphanage in Tanzania, where he and his wife adopted a child.Brandon and I have a wide ranging, and at times challenging conversation about the intersections between evangelism, missionary work, colonialism, race, adoption and orphan care.

Isaiah 53Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. 11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.Download Message Slides
