Seth and Jessie try a solitaire/co-op card game: Onirim. In this game you and your partner work together against the game attempting to gather the eight Door cards before the deck runs out. You obtain Door cards either by playing three cards of the same color in a row, or by discarding one of your Key cards if you are lucky enough to draw a door card. Erica, Gil, Scott, and Sen have a roundtable discussion about player counts. We go through each of the common player counts, as well as a few uncommon counts, and discuss what's special about designing for them. SHOW NOTES 0m39s: Our thoughts about and general strategies for designing games at different player counts. 5m42s: 2-player games 9m20s: We chatted with Matt Wolfe about decision scales on Ludology 157 - Come Scale Away. 13m08s: Inhuman Conditions 13m59s: Belfort 16m24s: Alien: Fate of the Nostromo 19m41s: Pandemic 22m06s: Tokaido, High Rise 24m20s: Scott Pilgrim Miniatures the World 24m38s: 3p games 26m44s: The three-body problem. 27m38s: Here's Cole Wehrle's talk on kingmaking in games, and how it can be a good thing. 28m16s: Churchill 28m37s: Basari, which was adapted into Edel, Stein, and Reich in 2003 and modified to try to better handle a higher player count. Also, a note on ties with 3-players: it's impossible to tie on a vote with 3 voters (or any number of odd voters), as long as you are limited to two choices to vote for. Once you have at least 3 choices to vote for, the possibility space gets far more complicated (see the three-body problem above). 30m52s: Rayguns & Rocketships 32m25s: 9-5-2 is known by various names. Here are the rules to Sergeant Major, which is a very similar game; rule changes for 9-5-2 are further down the page. Also: Carolus Magnus, Bargain Hunter, End of the Triumvirate (Gil was wrong, it can play 2 players), Three Kingdoms Redux 32m58s: 4p games 38m24s: Stuffed Fables, Between Two Cities 39m14s: Tichu 40m03s: 5p games. Also, a note: Eagle-eared listeners will notice that you don't hear much from Scott from now until the end of the episode. He had to leave our recording session early, so we quickly recorded his bits for the end of the episode. And that's how the sausage gets made! 41m10s: 7 Wonders 44m16s: Alhambra, Alhambra: The Vizier's Favor, Catan: 5-6 Player Extension 47m36s: 6p games 50m44s: Godfather: A New Don. The "other Godfather game" Sen is hinting at is The Godfather: Corleone's Empire by friend of the show Eric Lang. 54m43s: Floor Plan, Welcome To..., Take It Easy, Time's Up, Karuba 56m11s: Werewolf, Two Rooms and a Boom 57m11s: The Unlock! series of games, Cranium 1h00m59s: Terra Mystica 1h01m23s: Arkham Horror 1h02m02s: 1p games. If you want to know more about designing solo versions of games, check out Ludology 154 - Leave Me Alone! (with Morten Monrad Pedersen), Ludology 234 - Playing With Time (with Dávid Turczi), and Ludology 248 - Solo-liloquy (with Carla Kopp). 1h05m12s: Onirim 1h06m38s: Chainsaw Warrior. Sen also mentions Ian Livingstone, who created the Fighting Fantasy series of interactive books with Steve Jackson (that is, the British Steve Jackson who co-founded Games Workshop, not the American Steve Jackson who designed Ogre, GURPS, Illuminati, and Munchkin. To muddy the picture further, the latter Steve Jackson authored three Fighting Fantasy books himself!). 1h07m33s: Kingdom Rush: Rift in Time 1h10m03s: 0p games, starting with So, You've Been Eaten. (Note that the BGG header only shows it as a 1-2 player game; technical limitations prevent it from properly showing as a 0-2 player game.) 1h11m34s: Strat-o-matic Baseball 1h13m30s: In Ludology 142 - Slots of Fun, Geoff and Mike chatted with slot machine designer Jeremy Hornik. 1h15m19s: Another link to Alien: Fate of the Nostromo. 1h15m43s: Sen's project: Avatar: Last Airbender RPG, Tiny Frontiers: Mecha and Monsters (referred to as "Mechs vs. Kaiju"), Coded Chronicles (Jay and Sen have already designed games with the Scooby Doo and The Shining licenses for this series), Dungeon & Dragons: Rock Paper Wizard 1h16m34s: Erica's projects: Rat Queens: To the Slaughter, Disney Sidekicks 1h17m37s: Gil's projects: Networks Broken Token insert, shipping issues, con season coming up

Warning: This podcast contains strong language and adult content With lockdown in full swing we've had to go back in time to talk about the some board games. Andy sends Steve to sleep with the fishes in The Godfather: Corleone's Empire and then try and banish the elder gods in Arkham Horror: Final Hour. We then talk about the latest cinematic module for Alien the Roleplaying Game, Destroyer of Worlds and all agree that its quickly becoming our game of the year. It appears we've fallen asleep and slipped into the Oniverse. Hate it when that happens! Don't worry though, all we have to do is find the doors to the exit. Easy peasy, right? Highlights include: - We get an official mascot! - Listener Cassie is outraged - It's a bit Picasso-y - Take some drugs and come up with an entire universe - it's easily done - Mark basically forgets what he's doing - Are we huge racists?

We discuss the art of playing games alone, games designed to be played with only one player. Games discussed: Proving Grounds, Onirim, Hostage Negotiator, and Ambush! We don't play games alone that much, but we tried a few out for this episode and were not disappointed.

Onirim, Urbion, Sylvion, Castellion, Nautilion. Ambie, Cassadi, and Crystal discuss Vinhos, Unearth, and Future Tense. We talk about digital games, and Crystal goes over the origins of the word "play."
We finally get round to talking about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a group, as Dan (@ThisDanFrost) leads a nice chat about why we enjoyed it so much and how it's a breath of fresh air. Kris (@DigitalStrider) and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) have both been playing even more Star Realms, which is impressive considering they've been sinking a load of time into two other games too: namely Onirim and Yakuza 0. We touch upon a lovely little game called Spot It!, get pleasantly disoriented by Inherent Vice, discuss the sensational TV show The Sniffer (while writing our own version, but with doggos), confuse a man from a Tesco, and delve deeper into the pub crisp mythos. Quick reminder! We have a competition we're running that finishes at the very end of July, so make sure to get your entry in quick if you're planning on doing so. This week, Anthony and Jason sat down to discuss the top apps released thus far in 2017, and who better to join them than one of the gurus of board game apps right now - Suzanne Sheldon. Suzanne sits in and helps to run through five of the biggest app releases thus far in 2017, including Race for the Galaxy, Tokaido, Terra Mystica, Onirim, and Mysterium. We also discuss the impact of the Asmodee mergers on the board game app market, and find out the answer to the most important question of all: pie, cake, or cookies. Welcome back to episode 125 of the 1 Player Podcast. Julius starts out with a discussion of his encounters with local armed robbery, and then explains more details about our new Discord chat. With the release of the new Onirim app, we've also started playing too many games of Onirim on our respective devices, so we cover this app's release.Julius also briefly talks about the solo mode in Gloomhaven (noting that the solo scenarios are not indicative of a full solo mode in the game).Albert also talks about the new Isle of Dr. Necroix game on Kickstarter (and Julius will nag a full review out of him). Julius also present V-Commandos, a stealth based cooperative game set in SS controlled Germany. Julius goes through the gameplay, nitpicks some, and comes out with a final conclusion. Albert just argues that it should be considered a war game (which it shouldn't). In the Kickstarter section, Gloomhaven 2nd printing is announced, Hardback, a pre”quill” to Paperback, gets funded, and our hosts look at a couple funding entries from fellow Media folk, Rahdo Runs Through and The Secret Cabal. In news, a Big Trouble in Little China mini game gets some more coverage, and Airships come to Scythe!Moving onto the review of the week, our hosts discuss Stockpile. Can our hosts use their insider knowledge to find the greatness in this game and it's expansion? Or does its low weight make them feel strategically bankrupt? Does the expansion make the game better? Episode 6 is finally available. It's only a week late. This episode is about experience games. I define those as games where playing is more abut the experience and story the game provides than it is about winning or losing. I first talk a little bit about dungeon crawlers and the review Outdoor Survival. This game is both despised and beloved. In both cases, I think, because the gameplay is so bad. However, if you start a game of Outdoor Survival with that in mind you'll find the experience more fun for it. Finally, I have a small contest in which you can win a copy of Onirim if you upload an Outdoor Survival scenario to BGG. Having taken 3 weeks to get this episode out, I think I like that time frame. It gives me enough time to play games between shows. In the near future, I may try and slow down my publishing rate a bit. Outdoor Survival on BGG
