Show #448 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PRODUCTION VOLKSWAGEN I.D. BUGGY WOULD BE A LOW-VOLUME HALO EV "Volkswagen has developed a penchant for bringing modern takes of some of its most famous vehicles to the world’s auto shows as all-electric concepts. Unfortunately, none of those concepts has made it through to production (yet), and with the Beetle on its way out the door, the German brand’s lineup will soon be without any heritage-inspired models. But the Volkswagen I.D. Buggy could change that." writes Brandon for Motor1.com today: "Speaking to Motor1.com as part of a media roundtable during the first day of the 2019 New York Auto Show, Volkswagen of American CEO Scott Keogh confirmed that his company would like to find a way to put a production I.D. Buggy into showrooms, saying “I think it's a good brand halo and I think it's a good brand building opportunity.” The path to production for the I.D. Buggy is still far from clear, though. According to Keogh, VW is still developing a business case for the car. If it does arrive in dealers, though, it will be as a very low-volume product. But the Buggy is uniquely positioned for service as a halo car." https://www.motor1.com/news/345334/volkswagen-id-buggy-production-halo-ev/ KIA HABANIRO CONCEPT IS AN AWD ELECTRIC WONDER CAR FOR EVERYONE "Kia filled its press release for the HabaNiro concept with so much bombast hoisted aloft by adjectives and acronyms that we don't know what to make of the actual concept" said Autoblog today" Conceived and designed at the Kia Design Center America (KDCA) in California, the HabaNiro's labeled "a whole new category of mobility – 'The Everything Car' or ECEV." The "fully-electric, all-wheel drive, four-seat wonder car" goes more than 300 miles between charges, has butterfly wing doors and Level 5 autonomy. On the other hand, considering this is a concept, the boasts and technology could be considered humble. Kia says "this is no fanciful supercar that will likely never be built, but a prescient look into the future of mobility where automobiles will seamlessly integrate design, capability, usefulness and creativity." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/17/kia-habaniro-concept-nyias/ NIKOLA WOWS HUGE CROWD WITH FIVE ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLES "Nikola Motor Company went all out with its big reveal, showcasing five future vehicles, including the Nikola Two, Tre, NZT, Wav, and Reckless." says Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "In a time when many startups are struggling to move forward in the segment, and some legacy automakers continue to push concept after concept with little to show, it’s difficult for companies like Nikola to earn support. Not to mention that it first came along as what seemed to be a “hydrogen only” automaker. Now, it seems that’s not necessarily the case. In fact, Nikola CEO Trevor Milton admitted that hydrogen is not efficient and not practical in many cases. However, for fleet vehicles and military use, it could definitely have its merits." Nikola said: "There are currently more than 13,000 Nikola trucks on order. The Nikola trucks feature up to 1,000 horsepower and 2,000 ft-lbs of torque. Nikola recently announced a battery-electric vehicle option for the urban, short haul trucking market. In the comments Micke Larrson: "“There are currently more than 13,000 Nikola trucks on order. ” No, there hasn’t been a single order yet. Free reservations for everyone is not an order. It’s not that hard, if you don’t sign anything, commit to anything and don’t pay for anything it is nowhere close to being an order of any kind. And there is still no sign on how they will build, sell and make any kind of economic sense out of these vaporware presentations. It is way too early to call it anything but vaporware." https://insideevs.com/nikola-wows-crowd-five-zero-emission-vehicles/ TESLA’S ELON MUSK REPORTEDLY SPOKE WITH POLISH PM ABOUT ELECTROMOBILITY ADOPTION Plenty of outlets today talked about a possible Tesla Gigafactory in Poland, but I'll pick up from Teslarati: "In a recent statement, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki admitted that he had spoken to Elon Musk about initiatives that could push electromobility further. While it took some time for the conversation to be arranged, the Prime Minister noted that he was able to speak with the Tesla CEO directly. Poland is also among the countries which are looking to be the site for Tesla’s Europe Gigafactory, which Elon Musk has mentioned in the past. Musk discussed Gigafactory 4 (a tentative name for the upcoming facility) back in July 2018, stating that Germany is the leading choice for the Europe-based factory. Poland, for its part, has noted that its initiatives such as its Strategy for Responsible Development and organizations such as the Polish Development Fund will support Tesla if the company builds Gigafactory 4 in the country" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-elon-musk-polish-prime-minister-gigafactory-4-electromobility/ JAGUAR IS DEVELOPING AN ELECTRIC CAR TO JOIN I-PACE CROSSOVER "Straight from nabbing the World Car of the Year award at the New York International Auto Show for the new 2019 I-Pace electric crossover, as well as publicly unveiling the 2020 XE sport sedan, Jaguar's design chief says the brand is also developing a car with a fully electric powertrain." according to Sven Gustafson for Autoblog: "We are doing more battery cars at Jaguar, yes," Ian Callum told Autoblog. "That's all I'm saying." Callum wouldn't divulge further details except to add, "When you're doing electric cars, they're new cars. They're not just batteries put in an old car. You can't do that." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/17/jaguar-electric-car/ TESLA CAPTURES 45% OF ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN EUROPE IN MARCH Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com has the latest on the Model 3 sales in Europe: "Sales of new passenger electric cars in Western Europe reached new record levels in March and in the first quarter, mostly thanks to a full month of volume deliveries of the Tesla Model 3. According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), the total number of registrations amounted to 40,400 in March at 2.5% market share, and 80,900 in Q1 at 2.1% market share. With around 44.8% market share among BEVs, Tesla is a new undisputed market leader, although not as dominant as in the U.S., where 75% share was achieved in March (which is not even a record)." https://insideevs.com/march-ev-sales-europe-40000-tesla/ TESLA IS PLANNING A BIGGER MODEL S/X REFRESH THAN WE THOUGHT Electrek has the big rumour story today: "Tesla is planning a full powertrain refresh that could launch at the same time as the previously reported interior design refresh. Earlier this month, we reported on Tesla’s Project Raven; an electric motor upgrade coming for Model S and Model X. Sources with access to Tesla’s latest software told Electrek that the code shows that the automaker is now working on Model S and Model X vehicles with the same battery architecture based on the 2170 battery cells found in Model 3." https://electrek.co/2019/04/17/tesla-model-s-x-refresh-upgrade/ CANADIAN PRICING REVEALED FOR KIA SOUL EV & NIRO EV One of the Canadian dealers – Brantford Kia – shared info about the two new Kia BEVs that are coming to Canada this year. The presentation is a little chaotic, but it includes the prices, which is the most interesting part: Kia Soul EV (e-Soul) – $42,595 CAD ($31,852 USD) Kia Niro EV (e-Niro) – $44,995 CAD ($33,647 USD) *both with 64 kWh battery and 150 kW electric motor https://insideevs.com/canadian-price-kia-soul-ev-niro-ev/ VW: “OUR BATTERIES LAST THE LIFE OF A CAR” Frank Blome, Head of Volkswagen’s Center of Excellence for Battery Cells said in an interview today: "Our aim is always for our batteries to last as long as the cars. We guarantee a minimum capacity of 70 percent for eight years or 160,000 kilometers. But drivers can also influence the length of a battery’s service life. Normal charging is better for the batteries than rapid charging, and charging the batteries up to just 80 instead of 100 percent also increases their service life. Many customers tend to drive short distances, like going to work or going shopping. The battery doesn’t have to be charged 100 percent for that. You do your driving and charge the car when needed, usually at your home wallbox. For our next MEB models we’re currently working with three partners as strategic suppliers of battery cells. They are LG Chem and SKI for Europe, and CATL for China. SKI will also supply our battery cells for the US market." BATTLE OF THE BIG AUTO MAKERS Leaders of the Auto industry have been talking to journalists at New York Auto Show. Scott Keogh, CEO of VW U.S, talked openly to the press about TEsla's Model 3: "“Even if it’s 10 percent of the market, we want to pursue it. We have not seen in the history of the auto business, a company going from zero to fourth place in luxury in a matter of a few years.” Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota Motor North America, said: "The average vehicle today costs $34,000 and for many EVs, the battery costs $34,000. The economics are not there.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-16/toyota-pooh-poohs-electric-cars-as-volkswagen-vows-an-embrace HARLEY-DAVIDSON OPENS PRE-ORDERS IN EUROPE & CANADA FOR LIVEWIRE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE Micah Toll for Electrek notes that another electric bike is now open for orders: "Harley-Davidson has indicated while pre-orders are now open in Europe, there will be a limited supply of LiveWire electric motorcycles available on the continent. LiveWire deliveries in Europe are expected to begin this fall, which will also align with deliveries in the US. The price of the LiveWire in the UK has been set at £28,995 (or about US $37,800). That’s a substantial increase over the US price of $29,799." https://electrek.co/2019/04/18/harley-davidson-livewire-pre-orders-europe-canada/ ONCE-HAILED ‘TESLA KILLER’ AUDI E-TRON SLOWS DOWN PRODUCTION TO JUST 6 HRS/DAY: REPORT "The Audi e-tron, once dubbed by avid Tesla critics as a potential “Tesla Killer,” is reportedly running into production problems due to a constrained supply of batteries and a slower-than-expected delivery of electric motors." says Simon at Teslarati picking up on an article by The Brussels Times: "The local publication’s sources claim that LG Chem is pushing up prices, resulting in Audi having to compete with rival automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz to acquire batteries for the e-tron. This is but half of the e-tron plant’s current issues, according to the Times‘ sources. Audi is reportedly seeing delays in the deliveries of the e-tron’s electric motors as well." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-killer-audi-etron-battery-production-update/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 11th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. An update on a story I mentioned briefly yesterday...with many news outlets confirming the news such as Bloomberg saying "Nissan Motor Co. said it will investigate instances of misconduct involving falsified data about exhaust emissions and fuel economy, the second controversy in less than a year for the automaker whose vehicle-inspection scandal had led to the recall of about 1.2 million vehicles. The data falsification...occurred on 19 models across five plants in Japan. During the checks, Nissan found out that employees misrepresented temperature and humidity data in the testing chamber and manipulated emission data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The automaker has hired a law firm to investigate the matter further." TESLA TO BUILD GIGAFACTORY IN SHANGHAI We knew it was coming, just a matter of when not if, and it has just been confirmed Tesla will build a factory in Shanghai, the city government announced. WSJ said: "The electric-car maker will set up a plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles, the Shanghai authorities said in a statement. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai to sign a memorandum of cooperation with Mayor Ying Yong". But why build a factory there? Once Tesla Shanghai has the new Gigafactory at capacity, they'll be building half a million cars for the Chinese market without paying the new import duties. Plus they could move the cheaper cars, like base Model 3 and base Model Y to be built there with lower costs, to increase margins. We know that Freemont is full and Elon has said in the past the Model Y won't be built there. Tesla said in a statement to Bloomberg: "We expect construction to begin in the near future after we get all the necessary approvals and permits. From there, it will take roughly two years until we start producing vehicles and then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we look forward to building even more cars for our customers here. Today’s announcement will not impact our U.S. manufacturing operations, which continue to grow.” "Tesla’s lone car-assembly plant is in Fremont, California, where it’s built about 88,000 cars through the first half of this year, and it has a giant battery factory in neighbouring Nevada. After moving ahead in China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, Tesla has said it will reveal plans toward the end of 2018 to build a plant in Europe." Although this isn't a financial podcast and I never pretend to understand the finer subtleties of a balance sheet, TEsla has $2.7bn in cash at the end of Q2 2018, with a plan for the Model 3 to make them profitable between now and the end of the calendar year. China has been an investor in Tesla before, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. spending $1.8 billion to buy a 5 percent stake in March 2017. MERCEDES ECITARO IS AN FULLY ELECTRIC CITY BUS At a major launch event yesterday, Mercedes revealed their all electric eCitaro bus. They said the powertrain has electric motors at the wheel hubs. Lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of up to about 243 kWh provide the power. The range is 150km. They are modular in design: the batteries are split between up to ten modules, each supplying around 25 kWh. As well as two battery modules on the vehicle roof, the standard equipment includes four modules in the rear of the bus. In the eCitaro, these are taking the place of today's powertrain combination of combustion engine and transmission. Depending upon customer requirements, another two or four battery modules are mounted on the roof of the eCitaro. They're using prismatic cells. Mercedes-Benz cools the batteries to ensure that they remain at the ideal temperature, thereby ensuring maximum charging capacity, performance capability, and service life. This cooling is undertaken by a separate battery cooler mounted on the roof. At extreme outside temperatures, the standard passenger-compartment climate control system is used to boost the cooling of the batteries. They see an upgrade path too as battery technology increase: "transport operators will even be able to increase the range of the existing eCitaro buses by swapping out the batteries at a later time and thereby further increase the operational flexibility." They are also talking about solid state batteries, which they predict will offer a 30% increase from 243kWh to 400kWh from 2020. However due to design these won't be swappable with the Li-Ion batteries but sold as a different range. VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS "ROADMAP E" — AN E-MOBILITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE IN CHINA On Monday 9th July Volkswagen Group China signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)" with JAC and SEAT in Berlin, to establish a new "Research & Development" center with a focus on developing electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies, as well as a competitive platform for battery electric vehicles (BEV). SEAT brand will be introduced to China by 2020/2021. This new Memorandum of Understanding will play a key role in Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility plans for China, in order to meet the demands of Chinese customers. Together with JAC and SEAT, Volkswagen Group China will establish an R&D center to develop electric vehicles, connectivity and autonomous driving technologies specifically tailored to the Chinese market, including relevant parts and components and core technologies, with completion planned for 2021. CHINA'S CATL TO BUILD ITS FIRST EUROPEAN EV BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY "Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) will build its first production site in Europe in Germany, agreeing a major contract with BMW to supply lithium-ion batteries." according to a report from Reuters, which adds to more of what we've previously reported on this story:" A contract to build the new plant was signed on Monday during a visit to Germany by China's Premier Li Keqiang. Around 240 million euros (S$379 million) will be invested in the first phase of the project, Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's minister of economic affairs, told journalists. BMW plans to source 4 billion euros of battery cells from CATL over the next few years, with 1.5 billion euros coming from the new site in Erfurt in eastern Germany, the carmaker's purchasing head, Markus Duesmann, said. CATL, the world's largest maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said the new factory was just its first step in Europe." says BusinessTimes.com.sg: "The CATL factory will create about 600 jobs and reach production of 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2022. CATL reached shipments of 12 GWh in 2017." Deussmann also added: "BMW had invested in some of the costs for the CATL factory in Erfurt, but declined to say how much. Duesmann said BMW was investing in cell research but a decision on whether to produce battery cells itself had not been made. "I don't rule it out," he said. BMW is "very comfortable" with two suppliers of battery cells at the moment, but could add a third and is in talks with eight manufacturers, he added". NOW ANYONE CAN CONFIGURE A MODEL 3 LA Times reports: "Anyone can access the Tesla’s Model 3 “online configurator” and lay down a non-refundable $3,500 cash payment; the delivery date is determined after the money’s been transferred to Tesla." I tried it here from the UK, but with my US VPN connected, and the TEsla.com site hadn't updated. "The stated wait time a Model 3 runs from immediate delivery to as many as nine months for the company’s long-promised $35,000 base price version. But each customer is informed individually about his or her specific delivery date." Tesla replied to a request for comment with this: "“Tesla has always required this deposit for all of its vehicle orders, including Model S and Model X, given that we build cars to our customers’ specifications. That deposit goes towards the purchase price of the vehicle.” We heard at the start of July, when Tesla confirmed they had made 5,000 MOdel 3's per week, that the official number of outstanding orders was 420,000. Tim Pollard, writing for the always-excellent CAR Magazine here in the UK reports that: "Skoda is working on a range of performance electric vehicles loosely dubbed e-RS to indicate the EV equivalent of the Czech company’s vRS go-faster brand. Global sales and marketing chief Alain Favey told CAR magazine that Skoda is planning performance spin-offs of its future EVs, which are in development and ready to launch from next year. First up is the e-Citigo, basically a Czech-branded Volkswagen e-Up testbed, due for launch in late 2019; but this is just the warm-up act for the main event - the new bespoke EV crossover due a year later in autumn 2020, which will be the first to get Skoda’s proposed new e-RS derivative." Favey said to CAR: "There will be an e-RS,the logic is the same as for vRS. It’s not about performance as such… it’s more about the look, the sporty seats, the experience. That’s the spirit of vRS.’ "Expect a 300-mile range, design consistent with regular Skodas, a fast-charging network at main dealers, new, floating instrumentation and the very latest in connectivity, according to Favey." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/skoda/skoda-e-rs-electric-vrs-performance-cars-from-2020/ VW EYES GOODWOOD RECORD WITH ITS I.D. R PIKES PEAK ELECTRIC RACER "Hardly content with shattering the all-time record at Pikes Peak, Volkswagen wants its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car to be the one to beat on other tracks. It's taking the racer to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the south of England this week, with designs on setting not only the electric car record at the Goodwood Hillclimb, but perhaps the overall benchmark too." according to Engadget: "The Goodwood festival marks the competitive debut of VW's car in Europe, while it will also host the European debut of Tesla's Model 3." https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/09/vw-pikes-peak-electric-race-car-goodwood-hillclimb/ MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REMAINS UK’S NUMBER ONE PLUG-IN VEHICLE "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues to be the UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors’ petrol/electric plug-in hybrid SUV totalled 537 units in June and 3,732 units so far this calendar year, ahead of every other pure EV and plug-in hybrid on the market" as reported yesterday by Automotive world. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 4th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Before we start The Fourth Of July. In the USA I hope you’re enjoying some well-deserved time off, an Independence Day holiday with family, friends and fireworks. Can I just say on behalf of everyone over here 242 years ago, sorry about all that, we had a habit of taking things. And by things I mean countries. TESLA IS OFFICIALLY BRINGING MODEL 3 IN EUROPE FOR FIRST TIME AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED Fred at Electrek has AWESOME news for my UK listeners: "Tesla Model 3 has shown up in Europe in several unofficial events, but Tesla is now officially bringing the new electric car on the old continent for the first time this month." Early M3 are also being invited too join them. I'll see you there! https://electrek.co/2018/07/03/tesla-model-3-official-europe-goodwood-festival-of-speed/ A SHOUTING ELON MUSK AND CHANGING RULES: INSIDE TELSA'S MODEL 3 SPRINT The reaction to Tesla's 5k model 3 achievement are coming in and CNBC goes for full drama: "A tense and short-tempered Chief Executive Elon Musk barked at engineers on the Fremont, California assembly line. Tesla pulled workers from other departments to keep pumping out the Model 3 electric sedans, disrupting production of the Model S and X lines. And weekend shifts were mandatory." They have a little more insight into those last few hours: "Leading up to Sunday morning's production milestone, Musk paced the Model 3 line, snapping at his engineers when the around-the-clock production slowed or stopped due to problems with robots, one worker said. Tesla built a new line in just two weeks in a huge tent outside the main factory, an unprecedented move in an industry that takes years to plan out its assembly lines, and said the tented production area accounted for 20 percent of the Model 3s produced last week." Tesla have made just shy of 50,000 Model S and X's in the first 6 months of a year they planned to produce 100,000. So all things being equal, no more no less, they'll do that too. "In the morning of Sunday, July 1, about five hours after the self-imposed second-quarter deadline had passed, the number 5,000 flashed on a countdown screen viewed by Tesla's Model 3 assembly-line workers. The Model 3 itself bore a "5,000" sign in its front window." https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/03/shouting-elon-musk-changing-rules-inside-teslas-model-3-building-spr.html HYUNDAI CONFIRMS HYBRID AND PHEV FOR NEW SANTA FE The Hyundai Santa Fe looks like it's electrifying for the next model. "Likely to arrive in 2020, the company confirmed their flagship SUV will receive a full array of hybrid powertrains, ranging from 48V mild hybrid, to hybrid and plug-in hybrid." says Jonathan Musk for fleetworld.co.uk: "Although there is little detail to go on for the hybrid and plug-in hybrid Santa Fe models, the mild hybrid variant will be the first to market, joining a powerful 48V system to a 2.0-litre diesel that can add torque to the engine thus improving efficiency." https://fleetworld.co.uk/hyundai-confirms-hybrid-and-phev-for-new-santa-fe/ NISSAN'S E-POWER TECHNOLOGY IS ANNIHILATING THE TOYOTA PRIUS IN JAPAN There's a hybrid technology not so populate in USA and Europe but doing big business in Japan. There's an ICE but it's there as a generator and the battery always drives the wheels, but on the downside there's no plug socket, so you rely on gas to charge the battery. Is that an EV as fossils are the only fuel? Nissan call it an electrified vehicle because it's the same experience as an EV but with a much smaller 1.8kWh, and therefore lighter, plus cheaper battery. It's in the Nissan Note and soon the Serena family van. It can do just 1.7 miles before the battery expires. Seeking Alpha says: "Given its hybrid nature, environmental consciousness may somewhat hinder adoption of the e-Power technology in Europe and China but it's unclear how European and Chinese governments will react to Nissan's technology. we are taking for granted that California's ZEV Mandate provides a loophole for e-Power technology just as it does in the case of the range-extended version of the BMW i3." The note is already Japan's best-selling car with more buyers wanting e-power it's soon to dethrone the mighty Toyota Prius. Would you buy one? You'd still have to fill it up all the time. You do get more miles as it's technically more efficient to run the ICE as generator. Is this technology which is going to be outdated by the time battery prices drop? https://seekingalpha.com/article/4185100-nissans-e-power-technology-annihilating-toyota-prius-japan-can-also-threat-tesla-lithium VW ENDS GERMAN DIESEL FLEET RENEWAL SUBSIDIES "Volkswagen Group let its diesel fleet renewal program in Germany expire at the end of June, a company source said, deciding against extending it for a third time" reports AutoNews.com: "While some of the highest discounts were initially offered on cars equipped with alternative drivetrains such as full-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, over time VW Group focused its incentive more on replacing old diesels with new ones." http://europe.autonews.com/article/20180703/ANE/180709926/vw-ends-german-diesel-fleet-renewal-subsidies TOLL DISCOUNTS OFFER ONE MORE REASON TO GO ELECTRIC In Ireland, "Drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid cars will pay a reduced fee on toll roads across the country from today" says Michael Cogley for The Times: "Those driving full electric vehicles will only pay half the toll rate while those using plug-in hybrids will get a reduction of 25 per cent. Drivers of fully hybrid cars, which rely on petrol or diesel to generate their initial energy, will receive no saving under the scheme." https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/toll-discounts-offer-one-more-reason-to-go-electric-vwfcc8p2n AUSTRALIAN FAST-CHARGERS SMASH EV “RANGE ANXIETY” ON AUTOBAHN Yesterday I was bashing Australia a bit for not having more solar and using that to power EV's considering they have all the sunshine. So let me redress that with some praise. Sophie Vorrath at RenewEconomy: "Electric vehicle drivers on Germany’s Autobahn can now recharge their car batteries almost as fast as filling up a petrol tank, using Australian made technology. Brisbane based EV infrastructure company Tritium said on Tuesday it had exported and installed 12 of the most powerful electric car chargers on the market to a site in Germany" The IONITY project is installing 350kW charging goodness. https://reneweconomy.com.au/australian-fast-chargers-smash-ev-range-anxiety-autobahn-38364/ SWEDENS JULY 1 STEEP VEHICLE TAX HIKE SPARKS LAST MINUTE JUNE CAR SALES FRENZY "Significant increases in annual vehicle taxes, particularly for vehicles with high CO2 emission came into effect July 1 this year. These tax hikes for higher polluting cars in particular were at the root of Junes car sales bonanza" says AID with a view to how it will affect EVs: "Perhaps most significant, the one-off subsidies for low-emission electric (BEV) and plug-in-hybrid cars have changed. In short, starting July 1 this year, buyers of new zero-emission BEVs will get a SEK60,000 (5,800) purchase bonus. The bonus is paid six months after first registrations." http://www.eagleaid.com/AID-Newsletter-preorder-1813preview-a-Swedens-steep-vehicle-tax-hike-sparks-last-minute-June-car-sales-frenzy.htm TOURIST TAX TO FUND ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS Mallorca is a beautiful island off the coast of Spain which Mrs Lee and I love to visit because of the sunshine and a chance to practice our terrible Spanish. But I never many see EVs. Now it turns out I may be helping pay for them! 500 rapid chargers will be installed using 10 million Euros of funds from tourists. A new policy will halt the sale of new diesel vehicles from 2025 and petrol fuelled cars from 2035 as the island moves to electric. GRIDSERVE® ANNOUNCE UK-WIDE NETWORK OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE “FORECOURTS OF THE FUTURE” Here in the UK: "GRIDSERVE’s national network of Electric Forecourts™ will offer significantly more high power charging points than are currently available at most UK petrol stations, and a totally new customer-focused charging, retail and services offering". Toddington Harper, chief executive of GRIDSERVE, said: “Our plan is to deliver for electric vehicle charging what Amazon has done for shopping online – make it simple, price competitive, and a great customer experience”. The team is currently exploring relationships with landowners, developers, investors, EV manufacturers, fleet managers and retailers. WHAT’S DRIVING OIL COMPANIES TO BUY ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING FIRMS? org has more thoughts on the recent purchase of Chargemaster by BP: "News of the Chargemaster acquisition comes less than a year after rival Shell shared plans to acquire NewMotion, a charging station company with more than 30,000 installations across 25 European countries. Other big oil and gas firms exploring alternative energy technologies include ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Saudi Aramco. Saudi Arabia’s largest commissioned solar power plant sits today in a parking lot at Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran. And last year, it was reported that the national oil company was considering an investment of up to $5 billion in the renewable energy sector." Many are billing Tesla's Model 3 launch as an iPhone moment. If the hype and pre-orders are any indication, the boutique electric vehicle manufacturer has indeed taken another step toward transforming the auto industry. But could the Model 3 also be a Blackberry moment? If sales don't live up to expectations and Tesla faces any sort of quality control issue, it could take a big hit. And there are plenty of incumbents looking to fill Tesla's role. In this week's show, we'll talk about the meaning of the Model 3 with Dana Hull, a Bloomberg business reporter covering Tesla and SpaceX. In the second segment, we'll ask how consumers can better protect themselves from fraud or poor investments in home solar systems. And we'll finish with a conversation about James Hansen's latest dire (and controversial) warning on climate change. Make sure to come to our live show in New York City on May 4. We talk through the reasons why Apple launched Apple News, the different ways publishers can get content onto Apple News, and the pros and cons of each. We also talk about how Apple needs to evolve Apple News to remain competitive against other options like Facebook Instant Articles, Google's AMP project, and platforms like Medium. Our third topic this week was Tesla's Model 3 announcement and the pre-order process that accompanied it. We talk about the significance of those preorders, the convergence of cars and tech and Tesla's role in that, and the interesting questions Tesla raises about how car design could change in a world without gasoline-powered engines.
