July 15, 2024 ~ Curt McAllister, Midwest Public Relations Manager of Toyota Motor North America, joins Kevin and Tom to share why the Greater Detroit Toyota Dealers continue to be a presenting sponsor of today's outing.
Toyota Motor North America stepped in for the 13th consecutive year to support a local Detroit community through its “Walk In My Boots” community outreach project. On Monday, January 15th, more than 125 family members from The Salvation Army received much needed new insulated winter boots and socks to help shield families from the cold and snow. With the winter snowstorm that fell upon Michigan and the below-zero temperatures, the boots and socks came just in time. It was a great afternoon as Toyota brought a ray of sunshine and warmth to the families. One family member said, “God is always right on time, and I am so grateful to Toyota for giving my family these boots. We had a major snowstorm. And now, my kids don't have to walk to school in the cold without boots.” With this project, in Detroit alone, Toyota has donated over 2,300 pairs of boots and socks to local families and contributed over $175,000 to The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division. It's a beautiful new week as we delve into the U.S. auto market's resilience amidst pricing pressures. We also talk about the stabilization of wholesale vehicle prices, and German rental car company Sixt's strategic shift away from Tesla to BYD for its rental fleet.Show Notes with links:U.S. auto sales in November rose by about 9%, with significant gains for brands like American Honda, Volvo, and Toyota, amidst ongoing inventory rebuilds. However, analysts caution about the market's future, noting potential impacts of pricing and interest rates, especially as fleet sales decline and car share reaches near-record lows."We're going to run a 15.5 SAAR this year, which is pretty freaking healthy... But going into '24, there's no question we're going to have to be more aggressive on our incentive spending to work on that affordability issue." - Andrew Gilleland, Senior VP, Toyota Motor North America.Affordability concerns loom, with expectations of more aggressive incentive spending in 2024 as automakers adapt to shifting market conditions and consumer preferences. The YoY growth: American Honda: +33%, Volvo: +26% Toyota Motor North America: +17% Hyundai: +11% Kia: +3%Ford Motor Co. was the only reporting automaker whose sales declined in November, falling by 0.4%.After a wild 2023, there may be hope for smoother sailing in 2024 according to some analysts, as the industry adjusts to post-strike market conditions.Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reports a 2.1% month-over-month and 5.8% year-over-year decline in wholesale values, suggesting a move towards stability.Cox Automotive senior manager of economic and industry insights Chris Frey noted they predict a 4% year-over-year decline by December 2023, and foresee less volatility in 2024.Significant price drops observed in various vehicle categories, including compact cars (-11.3%) and luxury vehicles (-6.3%), as the market adjusts post-UAW strike.Black Book's Used Vehicle Retention Index also shows a decline, reflecting a correction phase in the used vehicle market, with improved auction conversion rates.Major German rental car company, Sixt, is saying goodbye to its Tesla fleet, citing high repair costs and plunging residual values, while shifting focus to more sustainable and cost-effective options.Sixt, announces plans to phase out Tesla EVs from its fleet, deeply impacted by Tesla's price cuts and resulting depreciation.Unlike Hertz, which is cautiously stepping back from EVs, Sixt is keen on expanding its electric fleet, aiming for 90% electric vehicles by decade's end.The company is pivoting to Chinese EVs from BYD, citing lower costs and easier repairs, with a commitment to purchase 100,000 BYD electric cars.Sixt was the first rental car company to ever partner with BYDHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

As we head into November, there is already a lot to be thankful for as we talk about Toyota voluntarily boosting production wages. We also talk about the potential introduction of sub 20k EV as well as WalMarts plan to ditch degree requirements and focus on actual skills for corporate positions. As substantial attention has been turned to the UAW strike and subsequent pay increases for workers, Toyota is voluntarily boosting pay for their non-union production workers as the automaker has announced a 9.2% wage increase for its nonunion production workers.Toyota raised the hourly wages for its U.S. manufacturing, distribution, and logistics employees to $34.80, effective Jan. 1.This increase is the third in a year, following a 25-cent raise to $31.86 in September. The wage boost is significant at 9.2%, especially considering the usual biannual wage adjustments by Toyota.Skilled trades employees will see their top wage rise to $43.20 an hour from $39.50Wage progression time is halved from eight to four years, and paid time off is increased for all employees, including temporary ones.Chris Reynolds, Executive VP for Corporate Resources at Toyota Motor North America, emphasizes the company's ethos, "At Toyota, we take great pride in showing respect for people. We value our employees and their contributions, and we show it by offering robust compensation packages that we continually review to ensure that we remain competitive within the automotive industry."Vietnamese automaker, VinFast,is contemplating the introduction of the VF 3 minicar to the U.S. market at a potential price point under $20,000. At a mere 10.2 feet in length, this chunky two-door electric vehicle (EV) is designed to cater to the Vietnamese market but may appeal to budget-conscious American city dwellers. The VF 3 is described as both a car and a crossover, boasting 16-inch wheels and bold geometric design. The potential U.S. price point of the VF 3 might make it eligible for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit when leased.VinFast is transitioning to a hybrid retail model in the U.S., incorporating franchised dealerships.Duke Hale, an adviser to VinFast, shared insights from dealer meetings, "They liked the whole lineup but the VF 3, I would say, got an almost 100 percent response. They really liked the VF 3 and the reason is it's probably sub-$20,000."Walmart's five-star checkout survey and how it has been a source of frustration for both customers and employees. The survey is part of Walmart's customer satisfaction evaluation, where customers are prompted to rate their checkout experience. However, the pressure to achieve five-star ratings has reportedly led to stress among employees. Some workers feel that their jobs are at risk if they don't secure perfect scores, while customers have expressed annoyance Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Streaming Services We knew the day was coming when streaming would have bigger viewership than cable TV. It officially happened this past July. Streaming services accounted for 34.8% of total US TV viewing compared with cable at 34.4%. The 34.8% streaming services viewing climbed dramatically from 23% one year earlier. We may see similar numbers in August but in September we may see a switch back to cable as major networks launch new seasons and new shows. Streaming businesses are still losing hundreds of millions of dollars as witnessed in the latest quarter. Part of this is because of the cost to create new content and it is so easy to switch from one streaming company after a specific show/series is over to another streaming company. Remember how difficult switching cable companies was? You had to have a cable guy come out for an appointment that was set a week ago and then wait half a day at home for them to show up to switch your service. Now you can switch your streaming service just sitting on your couch in the comfort of your living room. I think the winner long term in the streaming services will be those that have the most titles in their libraries, along with the best studios to produce new content in. Student Loans The news from President Biden around student loan debt is quite frankly idiotic and dangerous in my opinion. To begin with we are delaying payments on student loan debt again to the end of December 31st, because people have not had enough time to prepare? What about the last 2+ years of not making payments? Also, the $10,000 worth of forgiveness is estimated to cost another $300 B. In an inflationary environment the type of loose spending we have been seeing does nothing to help reduce the inflation burden for the average consumer and in fact likely fuels inflation higher. It is also just unfair to the people that have diligently paid off their debt, opted to join the military to receive the GI bill, or just avoided college due to the high cost. The biggest problem here is this does absolutely nothing to solve the root cause of the problem and in fact may just fuel the cost of college higher. Students borrowing money today will continue to rack up debt and will likely want another handout in just a few years. I don't see how this does our economy and our country any good. Federal Reserve I have been thinking both the stock and bond markets were taking the Federal Reserve and its interest rate policy too lightly. Powell has now made his intentions clear, making some strong comments like, "While higher interest rates, slower growth, and softer labor market conditions will bring down inflation, they will also bring some pain to households and businesses. These are the unfortunate costs of reducing inflation. But a failure to restore price stability would mean far greater pain.” Unfortunately, I don't believe the battle with inflation is over and I believe interest rates will continue to rise. Inflation / Interest Rates Rising The Fed's preferred measure for inflation, the personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE), showed inflation easing somewhat as in the month of July the index climbed 6.3% year over year vs the 6.8% gain in the month of June. While inflation is easing, it is still well above the 2.0% level the Fed targets, which is why I believe they will continue to move forward with quantitative tightening and interest rate hikes. I'm still optimistic we will see inflation ease as we exit the year, but there is still a way to go before inflation is no longer a concern. Bed Bath & Beyond I hate to say it, but I really don't feel bad for these meme investors that are getting hammered the past few days. Traders in Bed Bath and Beyond (BBBY) saw shares fall more than 40% on Friday and they are down more than 60% if you bought last Wednesday morning. The reason for the crash is Ryan Cohen exited his position in the company and he was a major reason for the excitement from the Reddit crowd. He definitely capitalized off the small investor who will yet again be stuck holding the bag for these silly investments. When will they learn? Subscriptions / Cell Phones Wireless subscriptions are still growing at a rate of 3.9% year over year. One area that has grown dramatically is for children between the ages of 8 and 12-years-old. Back in 2015, 24% of that age group had their own cell phone. Today nearly half or 43% of kids in that age range have their own cell phone. I have no idea why an eight or nine year old needs a cell phone other than to talk to mom or dad. Electric Vehicles Not everyone thinks that electric vehicles will be flooding our streets in the near future. Jack Hollis who is executive vice president of sales at Toyota Motor North America believes a high sticker price and a poor public charging infrastructure will likely keep customers from widely embracing battery powered vehicles. He also has concerns on the rising cost of raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and other crucial battery inputs which will be pushing electric vehicle car prices even higher. In the near-term Toyota will continue to focus on hybrids and plug-in hybrids believing they will appeal more to a mass market. The hybrids are also more affordable and another concern keeping people from going to full electric vehicles is range anxiety of being stuck on the road with a dead battery. However, 8 to 12 years down the road it appears to be a different story. Tesla On Thursday morning Tesla investors will wake up to have three shares for every one share of Tesla stock they had on Wednesday. Going back to August 2020, for every one share you had of Tesla you will now have 15 on Thursday. That sounds like a big win, but valuations still matter in the long run. If Tesla stock drops by 30% that would be a decline of $90. That doesn't sound like that much, but if you go back prior to August 2020 the equivalent share price would be about $4500, and the dollar drop would be $1350. Tesla still has a price/earnings ratio of around 109 which means based on current earnings it would take you 109 years to get back what you paid for the stock. Don't be fooled by financial shenanigans as companies play with stock splits. With rising interest rates, a slowing economy, higher expenses on EV parts and competition coming from all of the car makers, the stock still remains way overpriced. The number of shares you have when it comes to splits does not matter, it is the value of each share based on the company's fundamentals. Housing Market The demand side of the equation in the housing market continues to show signs of weakness as pending home sales were 19.9% lower in the month of July compared to last year. We have discussed how the lack of supply has kept prices elevated, but pricing is starting to show some cracks as people simply can't afford these high home prices with higher mortgage rates. According to the National Association of Realtors, higher rates have pushed the typical mortgage payment up by 54% from a year ago. This has pushed housing affordability to its lowest level in 30 years. Assuming a 20% down payment, it currently requires 32.7% of the median household income to purchase the average home. This compares to about 20% of a household's median income before the pandemic. The 25-year average is 23.5%. The affordability appears to be starting to impact prices as in the month of July prices declined 0.77% compared to June. This was the first monthly decline in approximately 3 years and was the largest monthly drop since January 2011. Year over year price growth remained strong as prices were up 14.3% compared to July 2021. I believe we will continue to see double digit year over year gains as we conclude 2022, but as we lap these higher prices in 2023, I believe it is likely we will start to see year over year declines. What cars do their drivers like the most? We'll have the answers for you in our in-depth look at the J.D. Power 2022 APEAL Study. The J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle. This year the recently launched Kia EV6 compact SUV and Mercedes-Benz EQS large premium car were two battery-electric vehicles that topped their respective segments. But the vast majority of segment leaders in emotional appeal are conventional gasoline-powered cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs. The Jeep Wagoneer UV, Jeep Grand Wagoneer premium SUV, Kia Carnival minivan, and Hyundai Santa Cruz midsize pickup were newcomers to the market that top their segments. Consumer excitement with their vehicles actually fell this year, breaking a streak of increases that dates back to 2014. It is only the fifth time in the 27-year history of the study that consumer excitement with their vehicles declined year over year. And we'll have more, including information on how Tesla owners feel about their cars. In this week's road test segment, host Jack Nerad will give his take on the new, cutting-edge 2023 Genesis GV60. It's the first dedicated electric vehicle from the Genesis brand. The GV60's new-as-tomorrow features include facial and fingerprint recognition. Plus the vehicle actually has a crystal ball. Also in the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague went truckin' crazy in the substantially new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X. The full-size pickup truck is designed to slug it out off-road, and Teague and Nerad will offer their opinions of it in this episode. Our special guests this week are Brian Kursar, group vice president, Digital Technology at Toyota Motor North America, and Simon Roberts, Managing Engineer - Cabin Awareness at Toyota Connected North America. Toyota has been improving its infotainment systems by leaps and bounds recently, and we'll discuss how they've been able to accomplish that with them. In the news, Chevrolet just introduced an all-new Blazer EV that promises to be blazing fast. We were there for the unveiling and will tell you all about it. And Honda has unleashed the newest Civic Type R, so we'll tell you all about that too. All this and more in this episode of America on the Road.

Show #1453 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Monday 2nd May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. 2023 MERCEDES-BENZ EQE SUV SPY SHOTS: MID-SIZE ELECTRIC SUV SPIED - Mercedes-Benz's EQE SUV mid-size electric SUV has been spied again, and this time we have video. - It's one of a handful of vehicles designed around the dedicated electric vehicle platform known as EVA, which debuted in the 2022 EQS full-size hatchback. - It will be built at Mercedes' plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the EQS SUV is already in production. - The rear doors and trunk section don't stretch as long here, compared to the EQS SUV. The front overhang of the EQE SUV is also shorter, and its hood positioned not quite as high. - Expect the EQE SUV at launch to have a similar powertrain setup to the EQE sedan. This means the standard setup should feature a 90-kilowatt-hour battery and a single motor at the rear delivering 288 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. A more powerful setup with a motor also at the front axle for all-wheel drive should also be on offer, and you can count on all-wheel steering making the cut, possibly as a standard feature in the U.S. Original Source : https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1133845_2023-mercedes-benz-eqe-suv-spy-shots-video BIDEN ADMINISTRATION BEGINS $3 BILLION PLAN FOR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES - The Biden administration plans to begin a $3.1 billion effort on Monday to spur the domestic production of advanced batteries, which are essential to its plan to speed the adoption of electric vehicles and renewable energy. - Currently, lithium, cobalt and other minerals needed for electric car batteries and energy storage are processed primarily in Asia. China alone controls nearly 80 percent of the world's processing and refining of those critical minerals. - Senator Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, a crucial vote for potential climate legislation in the evenly divided Senate, said last month that he had “grave concerns about moving toward an E.V.-only future” because China controls the minerals needed for car batteries. - The funding is aimed at companies that can create new, retrofitted or expanded processing facilities as well as battery recycling programs, officials with the Department of Energy said. The grants will be funded through the $1 trillion infrastructure law, which includes more than $7 billion to improve the domestic battery supply chain. - In April, President Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to give the government more avenues to provide support for the mining, processing and recycling of critical materials, such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and manganese. - Between electric vehicles and grid storage, the market for lithium-ion batteries in the United States is expected to increase by a factor of 20 to 30 in the next decade but a secure domestic supply chain is needed Original Source : https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/02/climate/biden-electric-car-batteries.html STELLANTIS PLANS $2.8 BILLION EV OVERHAUL OF CANADIAN FACTORIES - Stellantis will invest about $2.8 billion to overhaul two Canadian factories to build fully electric and hybrid vehicles, the company said on Monday, as part of its $35 billion global commitment to electrification and related initiatives - The revamp will allow the automaker to build such versions of several of its upcoming models using new “multi-energy” architectures. The company also will add a battery lab to its existing research and development facility in Windsor, Ontario, creating 650 new jobs. - Retooling of the company's Windsor assembly plant is expected to begin in 2023 - Stellantis didn't say which models the revamped factories will be building - Stellantis and Korean battery giant LG Energy Solution announced in March that they will together spend $4.1 billion to build a major EV battery factory in Windsor. That investment is expected to create 2,500 new jobs, the companies said at the time. By comparison, the company recorded 268,000 customer EV charging session in 2020. - Electrify America estimates that EV drivers avoided the use of 5.7 million gallons of gas while travelling more than 145 million electric vehicle miles. The company dispensed 41.4 gigawatt-hours of energy to power customer's electric vehicles in 2021. - Electrify America has 800 EV charging stations and about 3,500 individual chargers open or with construction completed. The largest, open ultra-fast DC charging network features up to 150 kilowatts (kW) and 350 kW chargers, some of the fastest speeds available today. - Electrify America expects to have more than 1,800 total charging stations with over 10,000 chargers in the United States and Canada by 2026. All for a bunch of boring plug-in hybrids. - Bloomberg says that Toyota has sold nearly 200,000, the threshold for which afterward the federal tax credits will phase out, which is what has already happened to Tesla and GM. - Demand for Toyota's plug-in hybrid vehicles has steadily grown, especially as gasoline prices have surged past $4 a gallon, pushing up its cumulative sales of eligible vehicles to 183,000 as of the end of 2021, according to an analysis by BloombergNEF. The company reported sales of another 8,421 plug-in hybrid and electric cars in the first quarter. - “We're planning for it, because Tesla's out, and General Motors is out, and we'll be out probably in the second quarter,” Bob Carter, Toyota Motor North America's executive vice president of sales, said in a recent interview. “When you're out, you enter a step-down phase down, so we're planning for that.” - Bloomberg says that Nissan is about 34,000 Leafs away from crossing the threshold, while Ford is around 43,000 EVs away, though it seems likely that Ford will get there quicker than Nissan, given all the new EVs Ford is making. However, the Korean companies – LG and SK – are already developing LFP battery cells and could soon announce their mass production… - Panasonic is still suffering for relying on producing almost exclusively cylindrical cells for a sole customer (Tesla) for such long time. - CATL is determined to stay on the top and will start mass producing sodium-ion batteries in 2023. In this special business and ministry focused episode, we welcome veteran Toyota Global executive Bob Zeinstra to describe how he brings business & marketing to apologetics college campus ministry. Those skills are more relevant than you might think at first glance. Bob's corporate work as General Manager of Toyota Global Sales Support (a position with Toyota Motor North America) is the latest iteration of a 35 year career in corporate America, a career which included 5 years as Head of Advertising for Toyota Global & years spent in Tokyo. Bob's corporate day job is separate and distinct from his campus ministry in North Texas. But he brings the same values and skills to campus ministry : Respect for people and quality of product and advertising. While in Southern California, the Mecca of Apologetics training, Bob sought out additional training in Apologetics at Biola University. His curiosity and desire for growth in effectiveness and maturity in his walk with the Lord has led him on what he considers to be a life-long pursuit of understanding reality. He wants to share what he learns and what others know by bringing people together in pursuit of this high calling. We are called to love God with all of our hearts, souls, and our minds, according to Bob. Bob's campus ministry is volunteer so that the funds he raises go right to the student ministry itself. A gift, for example, of just 30 bucks might go right to pizza to attract and minister to the bodies of the curious minds who show up at a weekly discussion of Creation v. Evolution on campus. As cold frigid temperatures hit Michigan in the past weeks, Toyota Motor- North America stepped in for the 11th consecutive year to support the local Detroit community through its “Walk in My Boots” community outreach project. On Saturday, January 15, 2022, over 150 family members in need from The Salvation Army Conner Creek Corps & Community Center received new, insulated winter boots and socks to help shield families from the cold. Winter is the often the hardest time of year for many low-income families. When temperatures drop below freezing, people are at severe risk for hypothermia to set in and consequences can be fatal. While some programs offer winter coat, hat and glove giveaways, a person's feet are often left exposed as many families take the bus or walk in harsh elements. The Connor Creek Corps Community Center offers a place of respite, refuge, peace, and prayer for the entire community. To learn about The Salvation Army in your community, visit SALVATIONARMYUSA.ORG
Toyota has just introduced the 2023 Toyota bZ4X crossover utility, the first in what the company says will be an extensive line of battery-powered electric vehicles. In this episode of America on the Road we will not only have all the information you need to know about the bZ4X, but we will also have exclusive information on how Toyota plans to approach environmentally conscious vehicles going forward. One thing we can assure you: their plan is far from all battery electric all the time. Our special guest in this episode is Cooper Ericksen, group vice president, product planning and strategy for Toyota Motor North America. During the just-concluded Toyota “e-volution” event Host Jack Nerad had a chance to sit down with him to discuss the Toyota bZ4X compact crossover and Toyota's plans for electrification going forward. What he said is fascinating stuff because it isn't the blue-sky pablum some other manufacturers are putting out there. It's a can't-miss interview. In auto news this week, the North American Car of the Year jury has announced its Finalists for its 2022 awards and we'll have them for you in this episode. In the minds of the jurors they represent the nine best new vehicles to come to market for 2022. You'll be amazed at what vehicles made the field and what vehicles did not. Also in the news, if you have problems connecting your phone to your car, you are not alone. We'll have the J.D. Power survey data for you on that and other automotive multimedia issues. In the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague will be giving of his thoughts on the Ford Bronco. Is the Bronco Two-Door the right choice for a young family? How does the Bronco fare in the rigors of a Maine fall? At the same time, Host Jack Nerad had the opportunity to drive the all-new Hyundai Santa Cruz compact pickup. The Santa Cruz represents an all-new vehicle type. How similar is it to the equally new 2022 Ford Maverick? And which one should you choose?

Public perceptions of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems have been dominated by Tesla's Autopilot, which presents itself as the most advanced Level 2 system by virtue of being more automated than others. But is more automation always better for driver assistance? Seeking answers, Alex and Ed sit down with Nick Sitarski and Derek Caveney of Toyota Motor North America, to understand how Toyota's long-standing principle of jidoka, or human-centered automation, has taken its Teammate ADAS design in a different direction.

Welcome to The Cyber Ranch Podcast, recorded under the big blue skies of Texas, where one CISO explores the cybersecurity landscape with the help of friends and experts! Today, host and CISO Allan Alford interviews Gabe Lawerence, General Manager of Cyber Security Protection at Toyota Motor North America. Gabe has seen the good and bad of purple teaming, and we're here today to discuss what a mature purple teaming organization looks like. To start the conversation, Allan asks Gabe to share a little about himself, his background in information security and what he does at his day job. His path to security hasn't been linear - he has been a developer, an entrepreneur and a startup owner, slowly making his way to different levels of management in the security space. Gabe runs Enterprise Security at Toyota North America and is responsible for the technical side of the business and manufacturing environment. When discussing what successful purple teaming looks like, Gabe points to the heightened alert of fidelity being among its greatest benefits. Rather than a red versus blue mindset, purple teaming encourages community and collaboration. Then, Allan asks Gabe to share a specific time he found unexpected success in purple teaming. Gabe gives an example reiterating the advantage of having a red and blue team working collaboratively. In managing an enterprise, Gabe says there is always something changing. Validating your controls, alerts and responses are just a few of many tasks best tackled in smaller chunks. Embedding the automation from purple teaming as the ongoing environment keeps things in a high functioning state and serves as a persistent health check. Gabe explains how a buffer overflow isn't exactly instantaneous and combatting lingering attacks. Though purple teaming has many great benefits, it requires a bit of maturity. Having different teams interact together as they mature ensures they understand each other's roles and can effectively work together. Gabe urges people in the industry to think of themselves not only as part of a specific team, but as a part of a broader collective. In the hiring process, he describes seeking candidates with experience in software development and scripting. Additionally, it's crucial to be willing and excited to learn and have keen problem solving abilities. In closing, Gabe looks forward to working in server-less spaces like the Cloud in the future and says his favorite thing about his career field is that it never fails to offer something new. Key Takeaways 0:21 - Host Allan Alford welcomes listeners to the show and introduces Gabe Lawerence. 1:12 - Allan asks Gabe to share about his background and day job. 2:40 - What is successful purple teaming? 4:30 - Gabe shares both positive and negative personal experiences in purple teaming. 9:42 - How do you automate purple teaming? 14:11 - Fine tuning the deployment of the controls. 19:20 - How Gabe designs and hires for his team. 26:20 - What keeps Gabe in Information Security? Show #448 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PRODUCTION VOLKSWAGEN I.D. BUGGY WOULD BE A LOW-VOLUME HALO EV "Volkswagen has developed a penchant for bringing modern takes of some of its most famous vehicles to the world’s auto shows as all-electric concepts. Unfortunately, none of those concepts has made it through to production (yet), and with the Beetle on its way out the door, the German brand’s lineup will soon be without any heritage-inspired models. But the Volkswagen I.D. Buggy could change that." writes Brandon for Motor1.com today: "Speaking to Motor1.com as part of a media roundtable during the first day of the 2019 New York Auto Show, Volkswagen of American CEO Scott Keogh confirmed that his company would like to find a way to put a production I.D. Buggy into showrooms, saying “I think it's a good brand halo and I think it's a good brand building opportunity.” The path to production for the I.D. Buggy is still far from clear, though. According to Keogh, VW is still developing a business case for the car. If it does arrive in dealers, though, it will be as a very low-volume product. But the Buggy is uniquely positioned for service as a halo car." https://www.motor1.com/news/345334/volkswagen-id-buggy-production-halo-ev/ KIA HABANIRO CONCEPT IS AN AWD ELECTRIC WONDER CAR FOR EVERYONE "Kia filled its press release for the HabaNiro concept with so much bombast hoisted aloft by adjectives and acronyms that we don't know what to make of the actual concept" said Autoblog today" Conceived and designed at the Kia Design Center America (KDCA) in California, the HabaNiro's labeled "a whole new category of mobility – 'The Everything Car' or ECEV." The "fully-electric, all-wheel drive, four-seat wonder car" goes more than 300 miles between charges, has butterfly wing doors and Level 5 autonomy. On the other hand, considering this is a concept, the boasts and technology could be considered humble. Kia says "this is no fanciful supercar that will likely never be built, but a prescient look into the future of mobility where automobiles will seamlessly integrate design, capability, usefulness and creativity." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/17/kia-habaniro-concept-nyias/ NIKOLA WOWS HUGE CROWD WITH FIVE ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLES "Nikola Motor Company went all out with its big reveal, showcasing five future vehicles, including the Nikola Two, Tre, NZT, Wav, and Reckless." says Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "In a time when many startups are struggling to move forward in the segment, and some legacy automakers continue to push concept after concept with little to show, it’s difficult for companies like Nikola to earn support. Not to mention that it first came along as what seemed to be a “hydrogen only” automaker. Now, it seems that’s not necessarily the case. In fact, Nikola CEO Trevor Milton admitted that hydrogen is not efficient and not practical in many cases. However, for fleet vehicles and military use, it could definitely have its merits." Nikola said: "There are currently more than 13,000 Nikola trucks on order. The Nikola trucks feature up to 1,000 horsepower and 2,000 ft-lbs of torque. Nikola recently announced a battery-electric vehicle option for the urban, short haul trucking market. In the comments Micke Larrson: "“There are currently more than 13,000 Nikola trucks on order. ” No, there hasn’t been a single order yet. Free reservations for everyone is not an order. It’s not that hard, if you don’t sign anything, commit to anything and don’t pay for anything it is nowhere close to being an order of any kind. And there is still no sign on how they will build, sell and make any kind of economic sense out of these vaporware presentations. It is way too early to call it anything but vaporware." https://insideevs.com/nikola-wows-crowd-five-zero-emission-vehicles/ TESLA’S ELON MUSK REPORTEDLY SPOKE WITH POLISH PM ABOUT ELECTROMOBILITY ADOPTION Plenty of outlets today talked about a possible Tesla Gigafactory in Poland, but I'll pick up from Teslarati: "In a recent statement, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki admitted that he had spoken to Elon Musk about initiatives that could push electromobility further. While it took some time for the conversation to be arranged, the Prime Minister noted that he was able to speak with the Tesla CEO directly. Poland is also among the countries which are looking to be the site for Tesla’s Europe Gigafactory, which Elon Musk has mentioned in the past. Musk discussed Gigafactory 4 (a tentative name for the upcoming facility) back in July 2018, stating that Germany is the leading choice for the Europe-based factory. Poland, for its part, has noted that its initiatives such as its Strategy for Responsible Development and organizations such as the Polish Development Fund will support Tesla if the company builds Gigafactory 4 in the country" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-elon-musk-polish-prime-minister-gigafactory-4-electromobility/ JAGUAR IS DEVELOPING AN ELECTRIC CAR TO JOIN I-PACE CROSSOVER "Straight from nabbing the World Car of the Year award at the New York International Auto Show for the new 2019 I-Pace electric crossover, as well as publicly unveiling the 2020 XE sport sedan, Jaguar's design chief says the brand is also developing a car with a fully electric powertrain." according to Sven Gustafson for Autoblog: "We are doing more battery cars at Jaguar, yes," Ian Callum told Autoblog. "That's all I'm saying." Callum wouldn't divulge further details except to add, "When you're doing electric cars, they're new cars. They're not just batteries put in an old car. You can't do that." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/17/jaguar-electric-car/ TESLA CAPTURES 45% OF ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN EUROPE IN MARCH Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com has the latest on the Model 3 sales in Europe: "Sales of new passenger electric cars in Western Europe reached new record levels in March and in the first quarter, mostly thanks to a full month of volume deliveries of the Tesla Model 3. According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), the total number of registrations amounted to 40,400 in March at 2.5% market share, and 80,900 in Q1 at 2.1% market share. With around 44.8% market share among BEVs, Tesla is a new undisputed market leader, although not as dominant as in the U.S., where 75% share was achieved in March (which is not even a record)." https://insideevs.com/march-ev-sales-europe-40000-tesla/ TESLA IS PLANNING A BIGGER MODEL S/X REFRESH THAN WE THOUGHT Electrek has the big rumour story today: "Tesla is planning a full powertrain refresh that could launch at the same time as the previously reported interior design refresh. Earlier this month, we reported on Tesla’s Project Raven; an electric motor upgrade coming for Model S and Model X. Sources with access to Tesla’s latest software told Electrek that the code shows that the automaker is now working on Model S and Model X vehicles with the same battery architecture based on the 2170 battery cells found in Model 3." https://electrek.co/2019/04/17/tesla-model-s-x-refresh-upgrade/ CANADIAN PRICING REVEALED FOR KIA SOUL EV & NIRO EV One of the Canadian dealers – Brantford Kia – shared info about the two new Kia BEVs that are coming to Canada this year. The presentation is a little chaotic, but it includes the prices, which is the most interesting part: Kia Soul EV (e-Soul) – $42,595 CAD ($31,852 USD) Kia Niro EV (e-Niro) – $44,995 CAD ($33,647 USD) *both with 64 kWh battery and 150 kW electric motor https://insideevs.com/canadian-price-kia-soul-ev-niro-ev/ VW: “OUR BATTERIES LAST THE LIFE OF A CAR” Frank Blome, Head of Volkswagen’s Center of Excellence for Battery Cells said in an interview today: "Our aim is always for our batteries to last as long as the cars. We guarantee a minimum capacity of 70 percent for eight years or 160,000 kilometers. But drivers can also influence the length of a battery’s service life. Normal charging is better for the batteries than rapid charging, and charging the batteries up to just 80 instead of 100 percent also increases their service life. Many customers tend to drive short distances, like going to work or going shopping. The battery doesn’t have to be charged 100 percent for that. You do your driving and charge the car when needed, usually at your home wallbox. For our next MEB models we’re currently working with three partners as strategic suppliers of battery cells. They are LG Chem and SKI for Europe, and CATL for China. SKI will also supply our battery cells for the US market." BATTLE OF THE BIG AUTO MAKERS Leaders of the Auto industry have been talking to journalists at New York Auto Show. Scott Keogh, CEO of VW U.S, talked openly to the press about TEsla's Model 3: "“Even if it’s 10 percent of the market, we want to pursue it. We have not seen in the history of the auto business, a company going from zero to fourth place in luxury in a matter of a few years.” Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota Motor North America, said: "The average vehicle today costs $34,000 and for many EVs, the battery costs $34,000. The economics are not there.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-16/toyota-pooh-poohs-electric-cars-as-volkswagen-vows-an-embrace HARLEY-DAVIDSON OPENS PRE-ORDERS IN EUROPE & CANADA FOR LIVEWIRE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE Micah Toll for Electrek notes that another electric bike is now open for orders: "Harley-Davidson has indicated while pre-orders are now open in Europe, there will be a limited supply of LiveWire electric motorcycles available on the continent. LiveWire deliveries in Europe are expected to begin this fall, which will also align with deliveries in the US. The price of the LiveWire in the UK has been set at £28,995 (or about US $37,800). That’s a substantial increase over the US price of $29,799." https://electrek.co/2019/04/18/harley-davidson-livewire-pre-orders-europe-canada/ ONCE-HAILED ‘TESLA KILLER’ AUDI E-TRON SLOWS DOWN PRODUCTION TO JUST 6 HRS/DAY: REPORT "The Audi e-tron, once dubbed by avid Tesla critics as a potential “Tesla Killer,” is reportedly running into production problems due to a constrained supply of batteries and a slower-than-expected delivery of electric motors." says Simon at Teslarati picking up on an article by The Brussels Times: "The local publication’s sources claim that LG Chem is pushing up prices, resulting in Audi having to compete with rival automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz to acquire batteries for the e-tron. This is but half of the e-tron plant’s current issues, according to the Times‘ sources. Audi is reportedly seeing delays in the deliveries of the e-tron’s electric motors as well." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-killer-audi-etron-battery-production-update/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Here at Toyota, we’re known for our sedans – but the T in Toyota also stands for “trucks.” Tundra, Tacoma, TRD: we are the T brand. We love the whole truck thing – Rugged, roomy, and built. Not long ago, a customer called to tell us his Tundra had driven a million miles. He brought the truck in and our engineers pulled it apart bolt by bolt in order to learn just what a million miles looks like on the inside of a vehicle. So, as we anticipate the roll-out of updates to the fall 2020 TRD Pro models – Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, and Sequoia – we thought it was time to celebrate the glories of the truck. We’ll talk to the people to engineer and build trucks, and we’ll hear the story of the greatest truck feat in Toyota history: the Shuttle Pull. Because it’s never a question of cars or trucks. It’s always going to be cars and trucks. I mean, when asked cake or pie, isn’t the right answer cake and pie? The People Who Build Trucks Our first guest is Mike Sweers, the Executive Chief Engineer for the Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma and 4Runner vehicle programs at Toyota Motor North America, Research and Development (TMNA R&D). The role of the chief engineer is similar to that of the director of a movie. The chief engineer is responsible for the vision and the execution of a vehicle; he is the first owner, the target driver, and the ultimate gearhead of that model. So, not surprisingly, Sweers is a sought-after truck and SUV guru at Toyota. Since 2017 he’s been in Japan helping to translate why we love trucks so much here in America – big, thundering trucks – and ensuring that we are designing and building the best and safest trucks for our customers. Sweers is followed by Kevin Voelkel, the new President of TMMTX, which is Toyota’s truck plant in Texas. This is where every single Toyota truck is produced, for the entire world. There are 31 katashikis, or different variations, of trucks that come off the line, making it the highest variation of vehicles on a single line in North America. Toyota Shuttle Pull But the truck love doesn’t end there because we one more tale to tell: the story of the Tundra and the space shuttle. In 2012 the California Science Center had a problem – and Toyotans love to solve problems. The space shuttle Endeavor was to be taken out of service and installed at the Center as part of its permanent exhibit. Which meant it had to, somehow, be towed through the streets of Los Angeles from its delivery point at LAX to the museum. Joining us to share his first-person account of the 5,600 pound truck staring a nearly 300,000 space ship right in the nose cone is our old friend Russ Koble, Communications Manager Advanced Technologies. If you’re ever in LA, you can stop by the California Science Center and say hello to that brave little Toyota. And, if you’re ever in Texas, come check out the TMMTX plant! You can head over to toyotatexas.com/tour for more information. It’s incredible to see in action. In this episode, the Trade Guys welcome a special guest: the self-proclaimed Trade Lady, Leila Afas. Afas advises Toyota Motor North America on geopolitical and market trends as their Director of International Public Policy. How are the auto, steel, and aluminum tariffs affecting the auto industry? How does uncertainty throw a wrench in production? Afas, Andrew, and the Trade Guys discuss. Hosted by H. Andrew Schwartz and produced by Yumi Araki and Jack Caporal at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. Download full transcript here.
Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, addressed the Detroit Economic Club on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, and offered his insights on mobility, autonomous vehicles, the auto industry and their potential impact on society. “To us, mobility using autonomous vehicles is about saving lives,” said Lentz. “If you look at the fact that there are 36,000 deaths that take place per year, 98% take place because of driver error. The fact that we can develop a car with intelligence to prevent those accidents from happening, to me that is the benefit to society.”
