In this episode, Jane and James discuss RAF Bomber Command's role in Operations Neptune and Overlord, initially focusing on the preparations for the invasion, particularly the mine-laying element known as MAPLE. They explore the complexities, challenges, and successes of the mine-laying operations, highlighting the inter-service cooperation and the strategic significance of the campaign, which has been so often overlooked. ( You'll be able to learn more about Bomber Command minelaying/gardening operations in Jane's forthcoming book, Invisible Campaign - Bomber Command Minelaying 1940-1945, due to be published by Tempest Aviation at the back end of 2024).The team then go on to discuss the wide range of bombing operations Bomber Command carried out before, during and after D-Day in support of the invasion. Hollywood's newest leading lady, animal activist, producer and actress Chantelle Albers (The 6th Friend), stars opposite Cam Gigandet (Twilight) and Hannah James (Starz's "Outlander") in the Lionsgate western film TWO SINNERS AND A MULE. A triangle love story centered around two female prostitutes. Hoping to share in the reward, they nurse Elden back to health and help him stalk his prey, Grimes (Cord Newman). But as Nora and Alice both develop feelings for Elden, no one notices that Grimes is now on their tail, and the hunters become the hunted. Chantelle produced and starred in the popular female horror film, The 6th Friend, streaming on Amazon, Tubi, and Movie Central. The film had a theatrical release with Cinemark Theatre, and also went on to win numerous Best Feature, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress awards. By May of 1940 the German juggernaut has conquered most of western Europe and all that remains is the tiny island of Great Britain- its army having suffered an embarrassing loss and retreat at Dunkirk trying to defend France against its German occupiers. Now Germany wants to annihilate Britain using their powerful air force- the Luftwaffe- which they consider unbeatable. The outnumbered British Royal Air Force (RAF) bravely rises to the skies to defend their island home from invasion while the fate of the free world in Europe hangs in the balance. As we get closer to the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord and the D-Day Landings, we're beginning to witness the passing of 'living memory' from the Second World War. With more eyewitnesses, participants, and war veterans passing away every day, how can we ensure that their memories, stories, and experiences are safely preserved? The University of Oxford have launched a new project to help combat this problem: Their Finest Hour. By creating a digital history project to encourage people of all backgrounds to submit their experiences or their relatives experiences of the Second World War, they're creating an invaluable digital archive that captures moments and stories that helped define the 20th century. But why is preserving these living memories so important - and what can we learn from the people who have already submitted their tales? In this episode, James welcomes Dr Joseph Quinn to the podcast to talk about this project, and what they aim to achieve from it. Hearing stories from individuals who have already submitted oral histories, and learning about the importance of preserving living memory - why is this Oxford project so important for future historians, and what can we do to help? You can submit to the project here.Discover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more. Lissa Evans has written books for both adults and children, including the bestselling Old Baggage, Their Finest Hour and a Half, longlisted for the Orange Prize, and Crooked Heart, longlisted for the Baileys Women's. Prize for Fiction. For children, Small Change for Stuart, was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the Costa Book Awards. It was followed by a sequel Big Change for Stuart. Lissa's next novel was the wonderfully witty, even satirical, Wed Wabbit, which employs fantasy and humour to explore some complex ideas about childhood, psychology and society.Lissa's most recent book, Wished, pays homage to some of the great classics of children's literature, particularly Edith Nesbit's Five Children and It, which Lissa admires greatly - the story is, however, wholly her own and will reward the reader with many surprises, twists and turn.In this episode, Lissa talks to Nikki Gamble about the book.About WishedEd and his sister Roo are faced with the most boring half-term holiday in history: five days spent in the company of their elderly neighbour, Miss Filey, and her ancient, smelly cat. But when they find a box of birthday candles in a cupboard in Miss Filey's house, their world is changed completely. Because these are no ordinary candles and every single one of them comes with a wish. There's only one problem: some of those wishes actually belong to someone else . . .From the bestselling author of Wed Wabbit, Wished is a hilarious misadventure about how the biggest wishes can come true, in the most unexpected ways.

Douglas Bader was beginning a promising career as a British fighter pilot when he lost both legs in a crash. But that didn't stop him -- he learned to use artificial legs and went on to become a top flying ace in World War II. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review Bader's inspiring story and the personal philosophy underlay it. We'll also revisit the year 536 and puzzle over the fate of a suitcase. Intro: In 1872 Celia Thaxter published an unsettling poem about an iceberg. Episode 56 sees The Sugar Baby Confessionals Sara Mae and Ruby join Flixwatcher to review Their Finest, the choice of Sara Mae. Their Finest (and occasionally Their Finest Hour) is a 2016 film from Lone Scherfig (One Day, An Education) starring the wonderfully on form Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy. Based on the 2009 novel ‘Their Finest Hour and a Half’ it tells the story of the making a moral boosting Ministry of Information film about Dunkirk during The Blitz. You wait until 2016 for a film about Dunkirk and then you get three at once, except only one of them really pays any attention to the role women played during the war. Despite feeling at times very much like a made for TV film and suffering from some heavy-handed moments in the plot, Their Finest is an inoffensive, very charming and well-acted film looking at the (often) hidden roles women played during the war. Scores [supsystic-tables id='58'] Unsurprisingly Their Finest scores high on the small screen score but low on repeat viewing, overall (despite Sara Mae’s enthusiasm and Kobi’s post Easter chocolate coma!) scores a fair 3.4. What do you guys think? Have you seen Their Finest? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! In the battle of ideas it is not uncommon for people to carry ideas in their head, but they don't know what the name of that idea really is. One of the most common, dangerous ideas abroad today is that of socialism. Socialism is a faith that, at its heart, believes that government must be empowered and government must address evil that emanates from classes of people, and that the purpose of government is to limit the evil done by certain groups of people. It is a faith that doesn't necessarily believe in individual right and wrong, but clearly believes in group right and wrong and is therefore a religious worldview, although it is a worldview that is quite free to deny God. It has its own morality and ethics, teaching sense of cultural sin and sense of redemption - all of which is dependent on the centralized government that is established to determines these things The election of 2016 voting patterns demonstrated just how widespread this idea is as Bernie Sanders garnered millions upon millions of supportive votes for his very clear proclamation of socialist ideas. It is vitally important to realize that socialism views groups as the basis of society not human individuals and that socialism is – as a systematic approach to human events, willing to dismiss the value of individual lives. The great challenge of World War II was actually in warring against this idea of socialism. Socialism came in two major forms. National Socialism - a collectivist form of government tried to right the wrongs of a nation which was perceived as an oppressed race, the defeated Germanic people as a cultural group. The other form of socialism is international socialism, which had gained a foothold in Russia, destroyed the foundations of that country and quickly spread like a cancer to the other Slavic nations creating a Soviet union. Inter-national Socialism, or Soviet communism, believes that the entire world should be governed by governments that treat people as groups and addresses the evil done by certain groups. It views ‘The perfect society’ as one, giant, egalitarian group. Sir Winston Churchill recognized that freedom required opposing,, and ultimately destroying, both forms socialism, as science and all the tools of mankind would be perverted and individual human lives crushed under such ideas. His speech, Their Finest Hour, is but one example of his clarity on the idea that the role of a just and free government is to protect the lives of its people and to not act against them.

With the Mayan Calendar running out this week, the Decibel Geek Podcast just may have run it's course in 64 episodes; at least that's what Aaron Camaro seems to believe. It's up to Chris to talk Aaron off the ledge as they spin some of their favorite songs about Doomsday in this week's episode, Songs for the Apocalypse. We start things off on a true note of finality with a track off Dio's final studio album, the 2004-released Master of the Moon. Few could rival Ronnie James Dio when it comes to apocalyptic lyrics as is evidenced by more than one of his songs being featured in this week's episode. In 1969, amid political tensions and war casualties, many people were pondering their mortality and some were beginning to predict the end times. The Rolling Stones were no exception with their Let it Bleed album. Dripping with wonder and sincerity, Gimme Shelter is a standout track that is still as applicable in current times as it was so many decades ago. While the Stones version is a radio staple, Chris spins a great take on the track from Australian hard rockers Thunder on their 1995-released Their Finest Hour (and a bit) album. Aaron's pick of GWAR's Gor Gor is an interesting take on an apocalypse song; this one coming at the hands (er, jaws) of a Tyrannosaurus Rex that is unleashed on the land of the free in their 1992 album, America Must Be Destroyed. We return from the break with Chris' pick of a very obscure, but awesome, track by veteran Los Angeles hard rockers Warrior. Not to be mistaken with the pre-KISS Vinnie Vincent project of the same name, Warrior built a large following along the Sunset Strip through the 80's and 90's but never quite achieved the success they deserved. This was due in no small part to an ever-changing lineup that for all intents and purposes became the minor leagues for rock stars with members changing constantly and joining/quitting other well-known bands of the era. We spin a track from the Mark IX lineup of Warrior with Chris' pick of a straight up apocalyptic tune. Buckle in! Another artist that tends to get his point across from the dark side and certainly doesn't shy away from writing apocalyptic lyrics is Marilyn Manson. Aaron's choice of a final-day track from the 1998 Mechanical Animals album is as close as you can get to a love song about the apocalypse. One irritating factor about American radio is the fact that some non-American bands never get their just due in the USA. One of those bands is Accept. In America, Accept are considered a one-hit-wonder; known purely for the early 80's hit Balls to the Wall. What many Americans don't know, thanks to radio, is Accept's career goes back to the late 1960's and they have sold over 17 million albums worldwide. Chris' pick from their 2010's Blood of the Nations album is just more evidence of the greatness of Accept. Aaron's next pick of the title track from W.A.S.P.'s 1989 Headless Children album is enough to give everyone a case of the heebee jeebees. We segue from Blackie and co. to Dio's second appearance on this week's show with a 1984-released track that is prophetic and very much in place in this week's theme. Aaron's next pick of a very well-known Black Sabbath track may seem a bit strange for our show. On closer inspection of the lyrics, there's no way we could do this show and not include this track from their 1970-released Paranoid album. Truly metal! We close out the show (hopefully, not literally) with a time-sensitive track from Iron Maiden's 1984 album Powerslave. The Doomsday Clock became a big news story in 1984 with the cold war heating up and US & Russian political tensions. Bruce Dickenson and co. were aware of this and wrote a song that perfectly captured the paranoia that was sweeping the globe at the time. An interesting look back for sure.
