The vampire has long been a way to explore the shadow side of society, and “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler's new blockbuster set in the Jim Crow-era South, is no exception. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss what “Sinners,” which fuses historical realism with monster-movie-style horror, illuminates about America in 2025. They trace the archetype from such nineteenth-century texts as “The Vampyre” and “Dracula” to the “Twilight” moment of the aughts, when Edward Cullen, an ethical bloodsucker committed to abstinence, turned the vampire from a predatory outsider into a Y.A. heartthrob. What do he and his ilk have to say today? “The vampire is the one who can unsettle our notions, and maybe give us new notions,” Cunningham says. “The vampire comes in and asks, ‘But have you considered this?' ” Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Sinners” (2025)“Black Panther” (2018)“The Vampyre,” by John Polidori“In the Blood,” by Joan Acocella (The New Yorker)“Dracula,” by Bram Stoker“Dracula” (1931)“Love at First Bite” (1979)“The Lost Boys” (1987)“True Blood” (2008–14)“Twilight” (2008)“What We Do in the Shadows” (2019–24)New episodes drop every Thursday. True Blood, Magic Mike, and even 365 have women lining up at the box office, renting in the dark of night, and daydreaming about being taken by a werewolf in the middle of the day. This week, Vida and Anthula are here to talk about why the porn industry is missing out. Everyone is always trying to recreate the wheel but in reality the things that turn a woman might be simpler than we think. Every lady is different but for these two "mature" ladies, we have very specific needs. So lay back, turn us on, and let's have a conversation. Send us a text
In this chilling episode of The Killer Point of View Podcast, we dive deep into the 2007 brutal and bleak vampire flick 30 Days of Night. Set in the isolated town of Barrow, Alaska, where the sun disappears for an entire month, we explore what happens when the darkness invites something far more terrifying than cold: a pack of savage, unrelenting vampires. We kick things off by sharing our favorite vampire films of all time, then move into our overall thoughts on this vicious entry into the subgenre. Would you survive 30 days of darkness, cut off from the world with monsters lurking in the shadows? We put ourselves in Eben's snow boots and debate whether we would've made the same self-sacrificial decision or tried to find another way out. Then comes a blood-soaked comparison: would you rather face the primal, animalistic predators from 30 Days of Night, or the seductive manipulators from True Blood? We also highlight our favorite kill from the film, break down the most intense moments, and give our final ratings.Stick around for some killer movie recommendations, and as always, don't forget to bring a flashlight. You're gonna need it.Listen now… before the sun goes down.

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: True Blood: "Bill, I've got the ick." Vampires can be so many things: sparkly, fast, blood thirsty, gorgeous. They can also be Confederate and Southern, which is what is going on here in ACOFAE's True Blood rewatch Season 1 episodes 1 and 2. Sookie is just ordinary girl with an extraordinary ability until Vampire Bill walks into her seating section and changes her life. Throwing it all the way back to 2008, True Blood was a moment, is a moment, and will be a moment in time - the themes are just as relevant now as they were then, as ACOFAE watches Sookie put men in their place left and right; sheriff, coroner, brother, boss. It does not matter. The "I'm just a waitress" Stackhouse is fearless in the pursuit of her piece of calm in the noise and Vampire Bill is just that and more. The accents are thick, the teeth are real, and the messages are important as Laura Marie and Jessica Marie lament that they do not make TV like they used to. 62: BREAKING DAWN | Hanan, the Tagalog Goddess of the DawnIt's a new day, a new episode, and finally time to talk about Hanan, the long-overdue Tagalog goddess of dawn! She's been there all along, ushering in the sunrise, bringing in the harvest, and very recently being recruited as the unofficial goddess of the New Year. But why do we know so little about her?Join us as we uncover Hanan's origins, from her celestial family (yes, she's sisters with Mayari and Tala) to her often-overlooked role in Philippine mythology. We take a deep dive into the myth where she blinds the Bakunawa in a cosmic battle to save the moon, a tale that somehow feels like The Nutcracker meets True Blood. We also discuss how modern Filipinos have unofficially assigned her the job of goddess of fresh starts, why her PR team (if she had one) is seriously slacking, and how this forgotten dawn deity deserves a Sailor Moon-style transformation sequence (artists, we need you on this). ✨ Start your day with us, a quiz, and a whole lot of mythological nerding out.—The Gods Must Be Crazy is a podcast on Philippine Mythology hosted by friends Anama Dimapilis and Ice Lacsamana, avid mythology nerds and semi-professional gossips. Send us a textOk, You're going to love it. It's a great game. And, it's easy to play.First, Obtain a 20-sided polygonal artifact (hereafter referred to as the Orb of Random Fate), as well as a collection of various other polyhedral trinkets with sides numbering 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. The Orb of Random Fate should be stored in an arcane pouch (or sock) when not in use. If you forget the sock, this is bad luck, and all rolls will be cursed unless you perform a dance of atonementNext, Select one of the following archetypes: The Sword-Wielder, The Sneaky One, The Magical Zappy Person, The Religious Healer, or The Other One. Name them something overly complicated like “El'thezarion Moonschard IV, Keeper of the Eternal Bagel” or just “Dave.” Roll a 7-sided die (which doesn't exist, so you must approximate this with a 20-sided die divided by π) to determine your alignment, but only if your favorite fruit is a citrus. If not, your alignment is Neutral Chaotic Nocturnal. The RoE will describe a scenario (probably involving a dragon, a dungeon, or a dragon in a dungeon). Respond in character using only interpretive dance, haikus, or mimed gestures. Verbal speech is allowed but must rhyme. If you fail to rhyme, your character takes existential damage. And, that's how you play D&D.Anyone who has ever decided to play a new game for the first time and has let their friends explain it to them has experienced this. The overly complicated and ridiculous rules description. And, if you've been playing this hobby for long enough your can really relate. Back in the day we didn't have the internet and Actual Play Podcasts to watch or listen to so that we could understand how this TTRPG thing worked. We had to read a set of rules, that often had pages numbered in the hundreds to try and figure it out.Seriously. TTRPG rulebooks make IKEA instructions seem easy.Convincing someone to take a big chunk of their day, sit down, and play a game, with tomes for rulebooks is a hard sell. So, how do we encourage new players to give this great and wonderful hobby a go? How do we get them excited about the game? How do we get them playing? And, how do we keep them after their first session?Encouraging new players isn't easy, but luckily, thanks to the internet we have the perfect introduction to roleplaying.I give you 4 minutes and 15 seconds of Debrah Ann Woll, the actress from Daredevil and True Blood, teaching John Bernthal, the actor from Walking Dead and Punisher how to play Dungeons and Dragons. That is what I call perfection and what we are going to be talking about on today's episode.https://youtu.be/JpVJZrabMQE?si=Rv_YyLQ1QNa89Pj0

Send us a textIn episode 104, we dive into the 2021 horror film Black as Night. This not-so-unique blend of supernatural horror and social commentary takes us deep into the heart of New Orleans, where a young girl must confront a terrifying vampire threat that lurks in the shadows. We'll discuss the film's themes of colorism, gentrification, and the coming-of-age throughline that has a hard time hitting the mark. Grab your garlic and stake, and tune in for a deep dive into a film that will leave you questioning what's lurking in the dark.Timestamps Negronomicon: 04:56Crit: 29:17Pause here to avoid plot spoilers!: 34:16 Podcaster's note:A video that Mami Wata Mayowa posted online gave me the language I was looking for when we recorded this episode. The trope with colorism is that dark-skinned women are jealous of light-skinned women. This underlying belief colored the conversation this film was trying to have into a weird coming-of-age story that didn't sit right with me. I have a hard time understanding the perspective of the film has and I think there were a lot of other elements in the story that made this theme seem shallow at best. xo, LaurenGems from E104Black as Night (2021)Cheers (1982, television series)The Twilight Zone (1959, television series)The Faculty (1998)Scream 7 (upcoming)Companion (2025)The Blackening (2023)Barbarian (2022)22 Jump Street (2014)Idle Hands (1999)The Devil Wear Prada 2 (upcoming)Moana 2 (2024)Moana (2016)Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)Jason X (2021)Wolf Man (2025)Van Helsing (2004)28 Years Later (2025)The Last of Us (2023, television series)Fear Street trilogy (2021)Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)Goosebumps (2023, television series)Goosebumps: The Vanishing (2025, television series)Goosebumps (1995, television series)The Nightmare Room (2001, television series)The Haunting Hour (2010, television series)Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001, television series)Squid Game (2021, television series)Virgin River (2019, television series)Locke & Key (2020 television series)Sinners (2025)Mickey 17 (2025)Black Panther (2018)Spongebob Squarepants (1997, animated television series)Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999, animated television series)The Monkey (2025)Longlegs (2024)Until Dawn (2025)Until Dawn (2015, video game)Black Christmas (2019)Black Christmas (1976)Happy Death Day (2016)Cabin in the Woods (2012)Annabelle: Creation (2017)Lights Out (2016)Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)Groundhog Day (1993)Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)Chlorine Sky (Mahogany L. In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman chat (virtually) with Julia Trueblood and Karin Trachtenberg! Julia is an actor and producer; Karin is a theater maker, filmmaker, and director. Julia and Karin's film “Three A.M.” was featured and won the ‘Heartstrings' Award in Creative Guts' film festival in June 2024. In this episode, we discuss how Julia and Karin are telling stories from their perspectives as women and mothers and supporting women in film. Both took time off from their work to start their families, and for Karin, going back to theater was her doing something for herself after prioritizing her kids. Today, they're working with mostly all-women crews, in a super collaborative way. Hollywood writer and TV producer Elisabeth Finch seemed to have it all. After breaking through as a staff writer on the shows “True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries” at a fairly young age, she was hired at her favorite TV show “Grey's Anatomy.” She got the gig after Shonda Rhimes was handed an article that Elisabeth had written for Elle Magazine about her devastating battle with a rare form of bone cancer known as Chondrosarcoma. That piece garnered Elisabeth all sorts of attention and her wishes came true when she joined the “Grey's Anatomy” staff - eventually rising to the rank of co-executive producer. Elisabeth made a mark on the narrative by infusing her writing with the harrowing details of her own cancer battles. The only issue was, Elisabeth never had cancer. Have you ever heard of "clinical vampirism," more commonly known today as Renfield's Syndrome? One review of psychiatric literature claims that over 50,000 people addicted to drinking blood have appeared in case studies from 1892 to 2010. But does that mean that any of them are actually, at least medically speaking, vampires? For Merch and everything else Bad Magic related, head to: https://www.badmagicproductions.com
