In the two years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, the fighting has caused widespread horror and devastation. Over 10,000 civilians have been killed and more than half a million people injured. Still millions of others are internally displaced, seeking refuge abroad, or are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. The idea of war – and how to prevent it – was a central concern when 51 nations came together to form the United Nations over seven decades ago. Russia's invasion of Ukraine poses deep challenges to the international rules-based order and raises complex questions of international law, not only for Ukraine, but for nations around the world.In partnership with the Ukrainian Association of International Law, which worked with other stakeholders such as the Ukrainian Bar Association, the American Society of International Law helped to convene a gathering of international lawyers in Lviv, Ukraine in December 2023. Lviv was home to three giants in the field of international law: Hersch Lauterpacht, Rafael Lemkin, and Louis Sohn. Lauterpacht developed the concept of crimes against humanity, Lemkin pioneered the term “genocide,” and pushed for the adoption of the U.N. Genocide Convention, and Sohn played a pivotal role in helping to conceptualize article 51 of the U.N. Charter on the right of self-defense. Many of those who gathered in Lviv are now sharing their reflections on the meeting in a Just Security symposium. Joining the show to discuss the symposium are four of its editors, Kateryna Busol, Olga Butkevych, Rebecca Hamilton, and Gregory Shaffer.  Kateryna is a Ukrainian lawyer and an Associate Professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Although the International Criminal Court has issued a war crimes arrest warrant for Russian president Vladimir Putin, major American politicians continue to express support for Russia. 100 years ago, nobody cared about Ukraine – or its disappearance as an independent state – swallowed up as the newly born tyranny of the USSR flexed its imperial muscles; but that has now changed. Putin's Russian World revanchism and violence have accelerated the evolution of Ukrainian identity and increased the pressure for social, political, and economic change. Perhaps the most perverse Russian invasion narrative, is that Ukraine is not old, and is not distinct from Russia in any case. But Ukraine is not just a footnote to Russian imperial history. As a nation, it is old, different, and diverse. Patron was awarded the “Four-legged Defender” award by the Ukrainian Association of Dog Breeders of Ukraine. On 27 May 2022, Patron was awarded the Palm Dog award for “DogManitarian Work” at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. A Ukrainian hero, Patron dog's role in raising awareness about the landmines not only keeps children safe, but also helps to build a safer future for the community. The Ukrainian Association of SA, which picketed outside a closed door Russian-SA investment meeting in Sandton yesterday, has urged South African businesses to cease all co-operation with their Russian counterparts in the private sector and in government. The association's secretary, Anastasia Korpeso, said co-operating with Russian business equated to directly funding the Russia's war with Ukraine.

Liliya is the President of the Ukrainian Association of Washington State and along with Maksym are strongly involved in preserving and presenting their Ukrainian cultural heritage locally. June is a big fund raising month with a Teddy Bear Drop taking place to provide the bears to comfort children. And there's a big need for medical supplies, and a big effort to supply Neo-natal units as there are many emergency birthing situations in the Ukraine. UW Tacoma junior Illia Meserenko is an international student from Ukraine. In this episode Meserenko talks about the war between Russia and Ukraine. Meserenko's mother, father and grandmother are still in Ukraine. His mother and grandmother fled Kyiv but his father stayed behind. Meserenko talks about how they're doing and the impact that war has had on him. A cargo jet packed full of bandages, clean syringes, and other medical supplies is set to leave for Ukraine this week from Sea-Tac Airport. A group of nonprofit organizations, including Nova Ukraine and the Ukrainian Association of Washington State, donated $3.5 million in supplies to help Ukrainians fleeing violence.

If you would like to support Ukrainian EFT therapists through supervision, running support groups, or providing relevant training, please email the director of the Ukrainian EFT Association (UAEFT) Inna Garbuz at il-g@i.ua   If you would like to contribute financially, UAEFT is creating a program to connect Ukrainian couples and families with Ukrainian EFT therapists to receive help, no matter where they are. While many of the therapists (who are either still in Ukraine or are themselves refugees, abroad) now are continuing to provide help to their clients or refugees, they receive no income. The Ukrainian community says while support from New Zealand has been helpful, there's more to be done.  We're sending nine members of our Defence Force to UK and Belgium to aid with intelligence.  The Ukrainian Association says the Government has been quick to sort out visas.   However Chairman Yuriy Gladun told Kate Hawkesby there needs to be more understanding of the situation.  He says our immigration system can be too rigid for people without documents. LISTEN ABOVE
