Hi everyone!Welcome back to The Truth About Addiction. Today's guest is a very special man with a powerful message. He's a living embodiment of what happens when an addict changes the trajectory of their life and steps into their purpose. For more on Mike Fiore, check out his bio below:Michael Fiore is the Outreach Coordinator for Voices for Awareness and ProjectFacing Fentanyl (Home of National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, August21). Michael is C.E.O. & Founder of Inspire 2 Inspire providing resources to addicts in recovery nationwide. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.C., and now resides in California. Addiction was a common theme throughout Michael's life. His parents were both addicted. He lost two grandmothers to alcoholism, a grandfather to heroin, and his uncle to heroin. Michael's parents were good people. They provided for and loved him but were not always present in his life, making it easy for him to begin experimenting with drugs. Michael was looking for validation from the outside world because he didn't get it at home. He became a "people pleaser" in hopes that everyone would be his friend. Michael couldn't find value in himself, lying and manipulating to get people to like him. Using drugs allowed him to suppress those feelings. Drugs were the solution to the problem. Michael's drug use lasted 20 years. In 2009 Michael lost his father to aids. He lived in and out of jails and institutions. After 12 years of using high doses of Methadone, Michael detoxed off Methadone in 2021. Just a couple of weeks after detoxing, on Thanksgiving 2021, Michael's mother died from aids. Michael was living in treatment at the time. While in treatment, Michael started his nonprofit Inspire 2 Inspire, working to support the recovery community. He is now a resource for addicts across the country. Mike graduated from treatment in May 2022. Twenty years of living in active addiction have given Mike a unique perspective. He has a "life education" that cannot be taught through formal education. Michael understands the value of a person's story and believes that "our stories lie in what we overcome, not what we have done."Michael has a passion for public speaking. His inspirational talks have become well-known in the recovery and fentanyl prevention communities. His high energy and positive attitude have been an asset to growing his advocacy portfolio. As Community Outreach Coordinator for Voices For Awareness Foundation and Project Facing Fentanyl, he successfully brings families affected by fentanyl poisoning together with people in recovery, building an army for his " 1 Voice Project". Working in the recovery community has given him experience working with churches, nonprofits, the homeless, human trafficking victims, and domestic violence victims, and his job as a Group Facilitator.Support the Show.#thetruthaboutaddiction#sobriety#the12steps#recovery#therapy#mentalhealth#podcasts#emotionalsobriety#soberliving#sobermindset#spirituality#spiritualgrowth#aa#soberlife#mindfulness#wellness#wellnessjourney#personalgrowth#personaldevelopment#sobermovement#recoveroutloud#sobercurious#sobermoms#soberwomen#author#soberauthor#purpose#passion#perspective

In 2004, he transformed Wicked Cow into a brand strategy/business development agency spending the next decade helping to oversee culturally iconic brands.  In 2013, Michael co-founded with Derek Jeter, their content and media studio, Jeter Publishing, which featured a two-imprint joint venture with publishing giant, Simon & Schuster, and several best-sellers. Next for Michael was the creation of Wicked Cow Studios, and its children's book sensation, Lulu Is A Rhinoceros, which it co-created and published. Now, Wicked Cow is engineering a world-class brain brand through its revolutionary neuroscience-driven media company, It's All In Your Head. Amanda Drews is the founder of Buzzy's Bees, the organization she started after her son Hudson, who was 13 months old, died of SUDC (Sudden and Unexplained Death in Childhood). Amanda started Buzzy's Bees with a mission to provide financial support to families dealing with the unexpected loss of a child. Over time, Amanda realized what families really needed and wanted was a chance to talk about their children. So she launched the Give Grief a Voice Project where families meet with professional writers and artists who capture the essence of their child and their life in a unique piece of art.   In this episode we talk about: The stories we tell ourselves about death & grief. What Amanda's older son needed in his grief.  How Amanda navigates her season of grief - the time between Hudson's birthday and anniversary of the day he died.

Sophie in her own words:   “I am a GP and mental health trainer practising in West London. My exposure to diverse pockets of humanity has taught me that social struggles, such as loneliness, don't discriminate and that the resulting emotional distress is real and reaching pandemic levels. My heart lies in challenging perceptions of these problems and how we support those suffering.   I am striving to increase awareness and education around responding to distress within the current UK system through my work with the organisation 4MentalHealth, while seeking out ways to change the system through the undertaking of research into the root causes of distress and alternative approaches to healing globally.   My growing interest in the relationship between mental health and community led to the creation of 'The Patient's Voice Project' in 2016. I'm delighted this year to expand the project and focus in on cultural influences on mental health and healing through a Winston Churchill Fellowship exploring the potential translation of indigenous traditional practice elements to western society as alternative forms of therapy.    I've also had the opportunity to relay my work more widely; engaging with corporate audiences through talks on community at the Airbnb London Headquarters and contributing to policy change through work with the Jo Cox Foundation and the ‘Campaign to End Loneliness' .   My work has also fostered a growing awareness of the transformative potential of the natural environment on psychological well being.    I enjoy getting outdoors as much as possible in the role of Expedition Doctor and most recently accompanied a group of young people to the Scottish Highlands with the British Exploring Society.   When not working you will usually find me Scottish country dancing, falling off a surfboard or practising the ukulele.”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    Support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media. Much of MVP's focus is on unaccompanied youth (identified by the school system as living on their own with very little to no support), providing them with the support and encouragement they need to complete high school and graduate. As of December 2021 area district liaisons had approximately 438 homeless students combined in our local area; families and unaccompanied youth living in shelters, cars, hotels, campgrounds, garages or doubled up with family and friends. While our public school systems receive federal grants to administer to the needs of homeless students, their day-to-day needs are not met through this program. This is where MVP steps in to help.Learn More About Matthew's Voice Project:  https://matthewsvoiceproject.comDonate to Matthew's Voice Project: Donate Here Support This Podcast! In our discussion, Joshua elaborates on: How he feels that the multiple facets of his career are all parts of being a complete musician His beginnings in Oklahoma and his studies at the Cleveland Institute How it's we should follow our heart and use our skills to explore what we love - pushing passed the bounds of what we were “taught” and explore further What he thinks about building a meaningful career – how we get the career that we build Why it's important to figure out what we want and focus on that The importance of questioning ourselves, getting to know ourselves, exploring our passions, and see if and how we can incorporate them into our career “Find your voice and build your career around your voice” Why there is no luck: “it's a series of things that you build on” Why we need both to be prepared and get opportunities Some of the challenges he faced on the way to his dream career How important it was for him to feel like what he did mattered The Popper Project and the Popper Challenge – what and why How it turned into a way for cellists to come together and created a supportive and inspiring community “Why do we need to practice etudes at all” How he maximizes practice   MORE ABOUT JOSHUA: Website: https://www.joshuaroman.com/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFT1OzgeBtU69e5v6sIwSag Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/joshuaroman Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joshuaromancello/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuaromancello/   Biography Cellist / Composer / Curator Joshua Roman has earned an international reputation for his wide-ranging repertoire, a commitment to communicating the essence of music in visionary ways, artistic leadership and versatility. As well as being a celebrated performer, he is recognized as an accomplished composer and curator, and was named a TED Senior Fellow in 2015. Recent seasons have seen Roman perform recitals and concert with orchestras around the US and the world, including performances of Mason Bates's Cello Concerto (which was written for him) and his very own concerto.  Roman is also a very active chamber musician and shares the stage with today's finest musicians. Roman has demonstrated inspirational artistic leadership throughout his career. As Artistic Director of TownMusic in Seattle he has showcased his own eclectic musical influences and chamber music favorites, while also promoting newly commissioned works. Under his direction, the series has offered world premieres of compositions by some of today's brightest young composers and performances by cutting-edge ensembles. In the 2015-16 season at TownMusic he presented his own song cycle, … we do it to one another, based on Tracy K. Smith's book of poems Life on Mars, with soprano Jessica Rivera. He has also recently been appointed the inaugural Artistic Advisor of award-winning contemporary streaming channel Second Inversion, launched by Seattle's KING-FM to cultivate the next generation of classical audiences. The cellist additionally took on a new curatorial role last summer, as Creative Partner of the Colorado Music Festival & Center for Musical Arts. The same organization sponsored him in April 2016 at the 68th Annual Conference on World Affairs on the University of Colorado campus, where he contributed his innovative ideas about how classical music is conceived and presented.  Roman performed at the Kennedy Center Arts Summit that same month and is a member of the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors artists committee. Roman's cultural leadership includes using digital platforms to harness new audiences. In 2009 he developed “The Popper Project,” performing, recording and uploading the complete etudes from David Popper's High School of Cello Playing to his dedicated YouTube channel. In his latest YouTube project, “Everyday Bach,” Roman performs Bach's cello suites in beautiful settings around the world. He has collaborated with photographer Chase Jarvis on Nikon video projects, and Paste magazine singled out Roman and DJ Spooky for their cello and iPad cover of Radiohead's “Everything in Its Right Place,” created for the Voice Project. For his creative initiatives on behalf of classical music, Roman was named a TED Fellow in 2011, joining a select group of next-generation innovators who show potential to positively affect the world. He acted as curator for an outdoor amphitheater performance at the TED Summit in Banff in the Canadian Rockies this past summer. Beyond these initiatives, Roman's adventurous spirit has led to collaborations with artists outside the music community, including his co-creation of “On Grace” with Tony Award-nominated actress Anna Deavere Smith, a work for actor and cello which premiered in February 2012 at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral. His outreach endeavors have taken him to Uganda with his violin-playing siblings, where they played chamber music in schools, HIV/AIDS centers and displacement camps, communicating a message of hope through music. Before embarking on a solo career, Roman spent two seasons as principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony, a position he won in 2006 at the age of 22. Since that time, he has appeared as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, New World Symphony, Alabama Symphony, and Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Ecuador, among many others. An active chamber musician, Roman has collaborated with established artists such as Andrius Zlabys, Cho-Liang Lin, Assad Brothers, Earl Carlyss, Christian Zacharias and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as other dynamic young soloists and performers from New York's vibrant music scene, including the JACK Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Derek Bermel and the Enso String Quartet. A native of Oklahoma City, Roman began playing the cello at the age of three on a quarter-size instrument, and gave his first public recital at age ten. Home-schooled until he was 16, he then pursued his musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Richard Aaron. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Cello Performance in 2004, and his Master's in 2005, as a student of Desmond Hoebig, former principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Roman is grateful for the loan of an 1899 cello by Giulio Degani of Venice.   If you enjoyed the show, please leave a review on iTunes!  I truly appreciate your support!
