It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW MINI COOPER EV " the Mini Cooper SE is the only EV in Mini's model lineup, delivering an EPA-rated range of 110 miles courtesy of an electric motor producing 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. When the next-generation Mini Cooper arrives, it will be offered as a fully-electric hatchback, but a combustion-powered model will be sold alongside it. For the first time, our spy photographers have caught Mini testing the next-generation Cooper EV in the snow." says CarBuzz: "Development is clearly at an early stage as the prototype is heavily camouflaged and fitted with fake headlight rings, taillights, and a Cooper S-style hood air intake. Despite Mini's efforts to mask the car's identity, the prominent "electric test vehicle" sticker is an obvious giveaway. a close-up of the driver's side window reveals the prototype is fitted with a familiar-looking curved dual-screen display. This mirrors the dashboard layout of current BMW models, which may upset some Mini fans. It will be a radical departure from the current Cooper's funky cabin that's dominated by circular elements. The next-generation Mini Cooper is expected to arrive in 2023 and will it will be joined by two electric crossovers in the same year." https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-your-first-look-at-the-new-mini-cooper-ev JEEP WRANGLER 4XE OFFICIAL EPA RANGE "The 2021 Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid Has Been Rated By The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as capable of covering 21 miles (34 km) in zero-emissions mode." according to AutoEvolution: "That doesn’t compare favorably to Jeep’s initial estimates of a fully electric range of 25 miles (40 km). Additionally, it’s not a great number considering the Wrangler 4xe’s rather large battery pack of 17 kWh" Erm...1.2 miles / kWh? https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2021-jeep-wrangler-4xe-official-epa-range-is-a-bit-worse-than-stellantis-thought-157901.html EVS ARE NEW IPHONE "Electric vehicles are the "next big product" for iPhone assembler Foxconn and are "very, very likely" to grow into a bigger business than electronics, Chairman and CEO Young Liu said." repotrs Nikkei Asia: "The Taiwanese group is weighing plans to produce electric vehicles in China and the U.S., entering a fast-growing segment of the auto market where tech players can compete with traditional automakers. Foxconn, which trades as Hon Hai Precision Industry, first revealed plans to assemble electric vehicles for automakers last October. The company has set a goal of capturing a 10% share of the global EV market between 2025 and 2027." They say: "We think that regionalized or decentralized production will be the way to go for EVs. Automobiles are very big and difficult to ship. The shipping costs are much higher than shipping a cellphone." So Byton will be first. Then Fisker. https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/Interview/EVs-are-new-iPhone-Foxconn-CEO-sees-next-earnings-driver HUAWEI FILES TWO PATENTS RELATED TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Hhinese tech giant Huawei is planning to make electric cars under its own brand, and now a new report has claimed that the company has filed a couple of patents relating to the same." reports Ecoinomic Times: "Huawei is in talks with state-owned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their car plants to make its electric vehicles (EVs). Huawei is also in discussions with Beijing-backed BAIC Group's BluePark New Energy Technology to manufacture its EVs. In addition, another Chinese tech company Xiaomi is also planning to build its own car and is considering it as a strategic decision, but specific details and the path it aims to take are yet to be determined." https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/industry/huawei-files-two-patents-related-to-electric-vehicles-says-new-report/81384876 CHINESE COMPANY IS BUILDING THE NEXT GIGAFACTORY IN GERMANY "The Tesla Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin is not yet completely finished when another international company announced the construction of a Gigafactory on German land. The Chinese battery company Svolt Energy wants to build a gigafactory in Saarland." writes de24.news: "Not far from this actual battery production – which, according to media reports, should start as early as 2023 – assembly will then take place in Heusweiler, less than 25 kilometers away. The company announced this together with the Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans at a press conference. The factory is to be built on an area of 840,000 square meters and provide annual capacities of 24 gigawatt hours – enough for 300,000 to 500,000 e-cars." https://www.de24.news/en/2021/03/chinese-company-is-building-the-next-gigafactory-in-germany-12.html TESLA TO USE LOCAL INLAND PORT TO SHIP FROM GIGA BERLIN "there are already talks of how Tesla will ship its electric vehicles and one idea is that Tesla could give the port in Königs Wusterhausen new momentum, reports RBB. The port in Königs Wusterhausen is to handle all deliveries for Tesla from summer. To this end, the port area is to be expanded by 25,000 square meters. This is a godsend for the port and the region, because four years ago it was on the verge of collapse." says Torquenews: "The inland port has both a rail connection and a connection to the A10. Initially, ten Tesla containers will be handled here every day, later 100 per day." https://www.torquenews.com/1/tesla-use-local-inland-port-ship-giga-berlin PORSCHE’S FUTURE EV BATTERIES WILL BE DEVELOPED ON THE RACE TRACK Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said at VW Power Day: "The Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 provided a crucial basis for development of the all-electric Porsche Taycan. For the Taycan, we adopted the innovative 800-volt technology as well as the cooling concepts and virtual development methods, from our 919 LMP1 race car. This is all superior technology that successfully differentiates Porsche from the competition." " But what does that mean? Because they only race in Formula E, but are leaving this year, and any the battery part of that series is spec and supllied by athird party to every team. So they ouldn't have been talking about FE. Where ELSE are Audi racing? Are they going back to LeMans or maybe Formula 1? The Drive reached out to Porsche to ask where this left its Formula E entry, to which a spokesperson replied: "VW Group's Power Day was about innovative high-performance cell chemistry which is intended for future use in high-performance, limited-production-run cars and in customer motorsport." So Porsche want to develop high performance batteries of supercars and race cars, what what race cars? https://www.thedrive.com/accelerator/39859/porsches-future-ev-batteries-will-be-developed-on-the-race-track ANALYST PREDICTS £18K TESLA COULD BRING ABOUT EVEN CHEAPER £5K EV " As companies gain experience designing and manufacturing EVs and build them in higher volumes, analysts predict that the number of parts needed for an entire vehicle could at some point in the future drop from the 10,000 or so mark today to around 100 (or even less). But with mounting pressure by governments who now favour electric vehicles over ICE, manufacturers may not have a choice and focus more and more on EVs. In fact, the Morgan Stanley analysts say" reports Motor1: " The cheapest ‘real car’ with an electric powertrain that you can currently order in Europe is the Dacia Spring, a subcompact model that costs €16,990 (which equates to approximately £14,550) in France" https://uk.motor1.com/news/495375/25k-tesla-could-bring-5k-ev/ CLASSIC MGS GET BACK ON THE OPEN ROAD WITH ELECTRIC MAKEOVER "A swathe of companies are now ripping out classic cars’ petrol engines and replacing them with battery systems, or even building all-new replicas of historic vehicles with the latest electric powertrains. One of the newest entrants to this burgeoning market is Staffordshire-based RBW, which takes original MG designs to build entirely new cars fitted with the company's own electric drivetrain." writes Telegraph.co.uk: "RBW is now road-testing a pre-production model of its electric Roadster which is limited to an 80mph top speed, can hit 60mph in nine seconds and has a 160-mile range. However, the new Roadster is not as true to the original MGs of the 1960s promise of driving thrills on a budget - RBW's car costs approaching £100,000 " https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/03/20/classic-mgs-get-back-open-road-electric-makeover/ CONTACTLESS PAYMENT PREFERRED "NetX, the project behind a three-socket EV charger, has revealed the results of its charging survey. The Innovate UK-backed project asked both EV and non-EV drivers about how easy it is to charge an electric car, one of the biggest questions for prospective EV drivers according to the study." says CitiMagazine: "For payment solutions, 85% of people said they wanted to pay for public charging by contactless debit or credit card payment or automatic payment on plug in. Only 10% wanted to pay by smartphone app and less than 5% wanted to pay by RFID card or tag." https://www.cittimagazine.co.uk/news/electric-vehicles-charging/contactless-payment-preferred-by-users-of-public-ev-chargers-study-finds.html BILL GATES ON THE URGENT SHIFT TO EVS "Batteries are getting better, but it’s hard to see how they’ll ever close this gap. If we’re lucky, they may become up to three times as energy dense as they are now, in which case they would still be 12 times less energy dense than gas or jet fuel. Our best bet is to replace jet fuel with electrofuels and advanced biofuels, but there are hefty premiums that come with them. The same goes for cargo ships. The best conventional container ships can carry 200 times more cargo than either of the two electric ships now in operation, and they can run routes that are 400 times longer. Those are major advantages for ships that need to cross entire oceans. There are four ways to cut down on emissions from transportation. One is to do less of it. Another way to cut down on emissions is to use fewer carbon-intensive materials in making cars to begin with. The third way to cut down on emissions is to use fuels more efficiently. the fourth — and most effective — way we can move toward zero emissions from transportation: switching to electric vehicles and alternative fuels. We can speed up the transition by adopting policies that encourage people to buy EVs and creating a network of charging stations so they’re more practical to own. Nationwide commitments can help drive up the supply of cars and drive down their cost." On a cold and Sunny day, into the studio comes a ray of that sunshine by the name of Humbird. Hailing from Minnesota and in Chicago for a show she came in and blew me away as she will you. After traversing 5 continents and 20 countries with only a guitar and a backpack, Humbird returns home to sing songs from the edge of the world. Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches traditional genres of folk and Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars. Creating music out of a mosaic of influences like Joni Mitchell, Bon Iver and Bill Frisell, Humbird weaves it all together with powerful lyrics and a stubborn pursuit of the sound of the North. The release of Humbird's double EP "Elsewhere" and "Where Else" in Summer 2017 is just the beginning. Click here to see all the videos from this show
Today’s topic is something I have never thought much about at all. And that’s true even though my oldest child was in this situation, and no one seemed to think much about it when he was accepted to Berklee College of Music a dozen years ago. When Jimmy applied to Berklee (the college we like to say that offers the best contemporary music education in the world), he was admitted for the following spring semester rather than for the fall. I looked at that as a great opportunity for him to study abroad for a semester. I found a great fall semester program sponsored by the American Institute for Foreign Study (everybody should check out AIFS’s huge variety of excellent programs). I knew he would still graduate on time since he had college credits from courses he had taken while in high school, and I figured that he would have even more from studying abroad. It sounded great to me! Of course, I now realize that is not how many students--who just applied to college under Early Action or Early Decision plans and were admitted for next spring instead of next fall--likely feel. Some of them--perhaps many of them--and their parents are clearly disappointed with their recent news. So, let’s take a look at spring admissions and how families should feel about that decision, regardless of how you feel about it now. 1. Tulane University’s Spring Scholars A couple of weeks ago, we quoted from a blog written by Jeff Schiffman, the Director of Admission at Tulane University, a great school in the even greater city of New Orleans. At the time, he was giving some advice to students who had applied early and been deferred till the regular decision round. When I was reading Mr. Schiffman’s blog, I noticed another post from December 18, and I’d like to read some excerpts from it now. This is about spring admissions at Tulane to a program Tulane calls Spring Scholars (feel free to go to his blog and read the whole piece): The most common question I get from Spring Scholars is, “Why was I admitted for the spring?” The answer has to do with how we review applications and the increase in popularity Tulane has seen over the past few years. Our admission office is very big on the holistic review process. That means we spend a great deal of time creating a class of students based on everything you present to us in your application. Spring Scholars have excellent applications in nearly all regards. There are amazing alumni interviews, great “Why Tulane?” statements, and outstanding letters of recommendation in every application. When reading your application, we knew immediately that you want to come to Tulane and that you would be a great fit here. That said, Tulane has become an increasingly popular university and that has made it more and more competitive to gain admission here. I suspect that our overall admit rate this year will be lower than last year's which was around 21%. Unfortunately, that means that over 80% of the students who apply to Tulane this year will not be admitted for either the fall or spring. By the numbers, we also saw our strongest Early Action pool in history, with a middle 50% range on the ACT between 31-34 and SAT between 1440-1540. These are by no means cutoffs, but it does give you a sense of just how competitive Tulane is this year. We can’t take every academically qualified student who applies, but for a small group who we believe will be fantastic fits, we admit them as a part of our Spring Scholars program. With those facts in mind, I have some suggestions for next steps to take if you have been admitted as a Spring Scholar. First, take some time to think about it. I know your preference would be to start class in the fall, but the Spring Scholars option is a final decision—it’s non-binding and you have until May 1st to decide. There will be no Spring Scholars switched to the fall semester at any point. Before you reach out with questions, take some time to read the FAQx for the program; there’s some great info in there about housing (we guarantee it!) and Greek life (you can still go through the recruitment process!) (quoted from the blog) Okay, so let’s look at the numbers. These are some pretty impressive numbers for Tulane (and they help explain why some students I know did not get in under Early Action, even though they were great students with all the necessary qualifications). And, these numbers underline again what we said two weeks ago: Expect a bumpy road for the next couple of months if you are waiting for admission decisions from very good and great colleges. The numbers are not very student friendly. And then, Mr. Schiffman makes some good points to the Spring Scholars: You have absolutely been admitted, you will absolutely have campus housing even though you will be arriving in the middle of the year, and you will absolutely be able to go through fraternity and sorority rush (which you actually cannot at some colleges with this spring admissions plan, and it is very important to some students and is more important at some colleges than others). What Mr. Schiffman does next in his blog is downright fascinating: He prints a full-color photo of The American University of Paris, with a caption that reads, “Your other fall campus option!” What? Here’s my view: One of the only cities in the world that is lovelier than New Orleans is Paris! How clever is that! Here is what Mr. Schiffman wrote: Next, consider your options for the fall. We’re so excited about the fall abroad programming we offer Spring Scholars in both Rome and Paris. You’ll have the option to spend your fall term with a cohort of Tulane students at one of two incredible universities abroad: The John Cabot University in Rome or The American University of Paris (AUP). Schools like Northeastern, Cornell, Miami, Delaware, and the University of Southern California also have freshmen at these campuses during the fall. . . . If you’d prefer to stay stateside, you can take classes as a non-degree-seeking student at a school of your choice, participate in a gap semester program, take a semester to work, or maybe participate in service. It’s really up to you! (quoted from the blog) Here is what Mr. Schiffman wrote next: Next, plan a visit to campus during one of our two dedicated Spring Scholar Destination Tulane dates. The dates you should plan on coming are either February 17th or April 21st. This event is tailor-made for Spring Scholars. You’ll be able to meet other students admitted into the Spring Scholars program this year, hear from current Spring Scholars, and attend presentations from both John Cabot and AUP. . . . If Tulane truly is where you see yourself, we’d love to have you join us in January 2019. Currently, we have 75 Spring Scholars excited to start at Tulane in just a few weeks! Oh, and expect a visit from me in Paris or Rome in the fall. I’m not joking! (quoted from the blog) It sounds to me like Mr. Schiffman has made the best possible overture to the new Spring Scholars and has offered them a super-attractive plan for what to do next fall, which might sound even better to some students than starting at Tulane in the fall. Smart move! 2. Where Else? Well, of course, it’s not just Tulane. As it happens, my own alma mater, Cornell University, posted this on its website about its First-Year Spring Admission program for its College of Arts and Sciences and its College of Agriculture and Life Sciences: Over the past decade, Cornell University has experienced a more than 100% increase in first-year admissions applications. For this year’s class, Cornell reviewed close to 47,000 applications for a class of 3,275 new first-year students. In order to allow more students to benefit from a Cornell education, the university has developed an exciting option. In January 2018, Cornell University will welcome approximately 60 freshmen to begin their Cornell experience starting in the spring semester. . . . Students selected for spring semester enrollment are exceptional candidates whom we are unable to admit for fall because of on-campus space constraints. Students with a record of academic achievement and who exhibit the important qualities of leadership and initiative have been selected for this special program. . . . Students offered the opportunity to enroll in January will be asked to submit an enrollment deposit to confirm their place. During the summer, we will contact you to confirm your plans for the fall semester (e.g. taking classes, traveling abroad, participating in public service, working, etc.). Cornell will then contact you in September to confirm that you are indeed planning to enroll in January. Once confirmed, we will work with you to pre-register for courses for the spring semester and have you start other processes (such as applying for housing and dining options). You will participate in an orientation program when you arrive in January (a few days before classes begin) to ensure that you are ready for success. (quoted from the website) Okay, Big Red, I have to say that doesn’t sound quite as exciting as Tulane’s Spring Scholars, and it certainly doesn’t have Mr. Schiffman’s hype (which I don’t say pejoratively). Plus--and this is also true of the Tulane program--just how big a deal is this program when it is admitting 60 kids when the freshman class was over 3,000. I have to say that I have not quite figured that out yet. It should, on the other hand, make the spring students feel genuinely good about themselves and their qualifications because they are really part of a relatively tiny select group. Would I advise a student to wait to attend Cornell until the spring if that’s the best admissions deal the student could get? Frankly, I would . . . in a heartbeat. And then there’s Middlebury College, an excellent liberal arts college in Vermont, perhaps best known for its outstanding language programs. For about 30 years, Middlebury has been enrolling about 100 students for its spring semester, which begins in February. Clearly, 100 students is a bigger proportion of the total of about 700 freshmen admitted at Middlebury at about 15 percent (compared to not quite 2 percent at Cornell and perhaps about double that percentage at Tulane). Here is some background on Middlebury’s idea: February admission is a program developed by former Dean of Admissions Fred Neuberger in a creative effort to fill dorm space that was empty during spring semester because so many Middlebury students study abroad. Rather than admit a large class of transfer students, the College decided to admit another class of first-year students, or “Febs.” (quoted from the website) Okay, so that’s interesting. February admission solved a problem for the college rather than a problem for the students. Of course, that really isn’t suprising, but it doesn’t make it a bad idea. The website continues: February students are chosen from the same applicant pool as September students and all students are notified of their admission at the same time in late March or early April. Students may indicate on the application their preference for a starting date (September only, February only, or either), but this is ultimately an Admissions Office decision. Some students who indicate an interest in September may be offered a place in our February class. Many applicants now tell us they’d prefer to be “Febs,” and some even outline their plans for the fall in their applications. (quoted from the website) Well, that’s not surprising, either, given the increasing interest by high school students in taking a gap year (feel free to go back and listen to our Episode 115 from last spring). I guess if a program is well established at a college, the way Middlebury’s appears to be, that gives students one more reasonable option to consider during the whole application process. The website continues: Being admitted as a Feb is a full admission to the College community. We choose our Febs because we see in them students who will use wisely the time between high school graduation and their studies at Middlebury. “Febs” tend to be highly energetic leaders in their school communities, or students who have already sought unconventional and creative opportunities in their high school careers. Febs typically come to Middlebury ready to “hit the ground running.” Before arriving on campus, Febs have several months that are entirely their own. The College does not seek to direct or recommend certain pursuits. . . . Some Febs work to save money and then travel. Other Febs pursue service opportunities or internships. As February first-years, students enter in February and leave four years later in February--in their caps and gowns, but also on skis, snowshoes, or sleds at Middlebury’s own ski area, the Snow Bowl! The February celebration has become a hallmark of a Middlebury winter. February seniors and their families enjoy a full weekend of festivities on campus and at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. February admission does not imply that students will graduate in three and a half years. Any student (September or Feb) may choose to use AP credits, or other transferable credit, to accelerate his course of study, but that’s not the intention of the Feb admission program. (quoted from the website) Middlebury has clearly made “Febs” an integral part of the College. 3. The Trends So, what are the trends in spring admissions programs? Here are a few. Colleges are not trying to push spring starters out in three and a half years; spring starters are expected to be there for four full years, but are certainly welcome to get out in three and a half by taking some courses elsewhere or using college credits earned during high school. Spring starters are going to live on campus, often with students of their own age. Spring starters will participate fully in all of the extracurricular activities that colleges offer (including fraternity and sorority life, but perhaps on a slightly delayed schedule for that). Spring starters who play on varsity sports teams will have four full seasons of athletic eligibility available to them. And spring starters will probably get some kind of special orientation designed for them so that they can immediately feel at home in the college community. So, what’s the downside of spring admissions? Maybe not much at all—especially if it gets a student into a great school that he or she has at the top of the list. Find our books on Amazon! Anyone considering an Ireland family vacation will be looking for the best things to do in Ireland with kids. This week’s guest has a lot of experience in discovering Ireland for kids. ::: Like what you’re hearing? Then please subscribe, rate & review Epic Education Radio. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! ::: Ireland with Kids: Building an Ireland Family Vacation Itinerary Meet Jody Halsted, manager of the Ireland Family Vacations blog and a regular visitor to the Emerald Isle. Jody goes to Ireland with kids every year, and she still hasn’t seen it all. For a country the size of the US state of Indiana, Ireland is a culturally dense place to explore, with plenty of fun for the entire family. In this episode of Epic Education Radio, we discuss the food, the festivals and the fun that Ireland offers to families. Why Ireland with Kids? Ireland is full of fun, exciting and educational opportunities for traveling families. There are castles and stories of princesses and fairies. There are festivals, music, and art. In addition, Ireland has a history steeped in science and literature. Writers, scholars, astronomers and other scientists called Ireland home. Their stories are waiting to be explored in Ireland with kids. Then there are the beautiful nature walks and the filming locations. Ireland’s natural beauty is unique in the world. That’s one reason why movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and TV shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones filmed here. In addition to all this, Ireland is safe and full of friendly English-speaking people. Therefore, there is no language barrier for visitors from North America, Australia and elsewhere. Despite this, she says, Ireland family travel is not a focus of Ireland Tourism Board. There are families who want to explore Ireland with teens. There are young parents who want to visit Ireland with toddlers. However, Jody says that the country markets mainly to older travelers and honeymooners. Families just aren’t their target demographic. This is an opportunity that Jody has taken advantage of. With her site, Ireland Family Vacations, she helps families who want to visit Ireland with children get the most out of their time there. In today’s episode, we discuss her travel tips for a great Ireland family vacation itinerary. Listen in for many fun and educational opportunities in Ireland for kids. Best Times to Visit Ireland with Kids Weather-wise, there is no one distinct season to visit Ireland with children. That said, there will be some rain almost every day, so plan your wardrobe accordingly. Even in the middle of summer, you should plan for the chance of wet weather and cooler temperatures. Weather aside, Jody recommended visiting in the shoulder seasons. July and August are peak times. With this in mind, consider visiting Ireland with kids in May/June or in September. During these shoulder seasons, you’ll find smaller crowds and slightly better weather. Events in Ireland for Kids Jody talks about the music festivals and the Christmas Markets in Ireland. Whether you’re in Ireland with babies or in Ireland with teens, there will always be something great to see and do. We also talk about St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, which is quite different than what many people might expect. Many an Ireland family vacation itinerary includes Saint Patrick's Day in Dublin or elsewhere. Yet you should be aware that it is not the booze-fueled party that you may find in North America. Sure, a lot of bars in the big cities are cashing in on the holiday’s notorious reputation. But you can enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland with children without going on a beer-guzzling bender. For many Irish families, St. Patrick'ds Day is a holy day. In fact, for many places in Ireland, the pubs are closed and people are at home having a feast with their families. Food in Ireland for Kids When considering Ireland family travel, many parents want to know about food options. In case you’re wondering, yes, you’ll find lots of potato dishes when you visit Ireland, but as Jody explains, there is much more than that. Most of Ireland is rural, she explains, so you can expect much of the menu items to be local. Local vegetables, meats, and fish, in particular. Picky eaters will find chicken cutlets, shepherd's pie and fish and chips just about everywhere, and menus are clearly marked for allergies. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, she says, just ask. There’s a good chance that they can whip up some standard dishes for you off-menu. 10 Days in Ireland with Kids: Ireland Travel Itinerary Jody has discovered that most people are looking for a nine to ten-day Ireland family vacation itinerary. That's usually five weekdays bookended by two weekends. Most people fly in and out of Dublin. But if you want to see more, she recommends starting in Dublin but then flying out of Shannon or Cork. Dublin with Kids You could spend your entire trip in and around Dublin with kids if you wanted, says Jody. There is so much to do in Dublin with children, but Ireland is more than its capital city! If your Ireland travel itinerary is around ten days, then spend two days or less in Dublin with children. One of her top recommendations here is the Museum of Archaeology. You can be in Ireland with tweens, teens, or toddlers, and you’ll find something interesting here. More recommendations on Dublin for kids in the interview. Cork with Kids or Kilkenny with Kids? After leaving Dublin, Jody says it’s time to make some decisions. With limited time, you may need to decide between visiting Cork or Kilkenny. In Cork, you have the Blarney Castle, the Black Rock Castle, and all of the history of the Titanic’s Voyage. You also have the tour of the Jamison Factory. Whiskey drinker or not, Jody says that this is a surprisingly interesting tour (I know I love visiting similar places). In Kilkenny, you have one of the only round towers where you can climb all the way to the top. In addition, Kilkenny has something special for sports fans: hurling. This Irish sport resembles something between rugby and field hockey, and you can watch a game in Kilkenny. Killarney, Limerick, & Much More From here, Jody describes so many more things to do in Ireland with kids. We talk about the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula. She tells me about the Bunratty Castle and its historical reenactments. We also discuss the merits and dangers of visiting Skellig Michael. This is the UNESCO Heritage site where Star Wars: The Last Jedi was filmed, but it's not built for tourism. (Spoiler alert: don’t visit with little kids). There is one of the most information-rich episodes I’ve ever recorded. If you’re planning am Ireland travel itinerary — or know someone who is — then this is the episode for you. I simply can’t write it all down here. Listen in and hear for yourself! Timecodes: In This Episode 02:36 Intro 03:39 Homeschooling 05:27 Why Visit Ireland? There is nothing like an internal whistleblower report about a FCPA violation, the finding of such an issue or (even worse) a subpoena from the DOJ to trigger the Board of Directors and senior management attention to the compliance function and the company’s compliance program. Such an event can trigger much gnashing of teeth and expressions of outrage followed immediately by proclamations “We are an ethical company.” However it may well be the time for a very serious reality check. The DOJ Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs focuses this question in Prong 7 with the following: Response to Investigations –What has been the process for responding to investigative findings? You may find yourself in the position that you will have to have some very frank discussions about what to expect in terms of costs and time outlays. While much of these discussions will focus on the investigative process and those costs, these discussions will allow you to begin to talk about remediation going forward and begin to explain why money must be budgeted for the remediation process. One of the things rarely considered is how the investigation triggers the remediation process and what the relationship is between the two. When issues arise warranting an investigation that would rise to the Board of Directors level and potentially require disclosure to the government, there is usually a flurry of attention and activity. Everyone wants to know what is going on. Russ Berland, the Chief Compliance Officer at Dematic Inc. has noted, “for that short moment in time, you have everyone’s full attention.” Yet it can still be “a tricky place, because you get your fifteen minutes to really get everyone’s full attention, and then from then on, you’re fighting with everybody else for their attention, just like the normal things in business life. It’s, they’re coming in and saying, “Okay, here’s the situation as we know it now, there is an investigation path, and corresponding to that, here’s what we think is the remediation path and some outlines of what it’s going to take,” often with some dollar signs attached to it.” You need to explain the costs to the Board and senior management. As Berland said, you need to be upfront and candid in firmly stating, “For us to get to this place, this is what it’s going to cost.” Moreover, you need to be able to show how some companies paid very large amounts, not just in the eventual fine and penalty but also in other costs. Berland went on to say, “We want to show you how people have lost money by having to write big checks, because they didn’t take this seriously, and saved money, because they didn’t have to write as big a check, because they took this very seriously, and your return on investment here is going to be very high if you do this well.” This is easier with the information that was provided in the 2016 DOJ Pilot Program around FCPA enforcement as it demonstrated how much discount a company can receive below the minimum range of the Sentencing Guidelines for remediation. One of the most difficult parts is that the investigation is often done in a way in which the investigators want to maintain as tight a control over the information and privilege as they possibly can. The remediation really requires output from the investigation to understand where the risk points are and where the gaps are, both in the compliance program and the internal controls. There’s a tension there, and it needs to be structured in a way that information can be shared with those who are designing the remediation without fear of compromising the investigation. Dan Chapman, CCO at Vimpelcom and formerly CCO at Parker Drilling, also believes that costs must be adequately discussed to set proper expectations. These include both direct costs and, even more importantly, a discussion of indirect costs to the company. He noted that “the biggest cost to a company during an investigation is the diversion of management resources” and, as he further explained, “kind of everything stops to focus on the investigation.” This indirect cost comes through largely the time commitment of senior management. He further explained, “if senior management has to commit 20% of their time, that’s 20% that’s not going towards revenue generating, shareholder value protecting activities.” Yet, how can you communicate that to somebody who has not gone through a full blown internal investigation then coupled with a federal investigation with the DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) involved? Understanding that the all-encompassing nature of such an event is difficult to articulate, Chapman goes through some of his past experiences as touch points. He said, “I talk about past experiences. One example would be at a past company, my first week on the job, they had a worldwide conference for all the senior managers from around the world. At that meeting, I asked all the senior executives, you know, C-level executives. I said, “Over the last few years, have you spent 5% of your time on the matter? They’d raise their hands. Then I kept escalating it: 10%, 15%. Hands didn’t go down until about 20%. Then I explained to them, to the audience, I said, “So if you got 5%, 10%, 15% more than your senior management, where would this company be?” I think that’s helpful, but there’s not great way to quantify it. It’s kind of like quantifying compliance generally. How do you quantify the absence of non-compliance? How do you quantify what could have been? How do you quantify the opportunity costs of managements time?” You can explain the upside of compliance and do that in a manner that juxtaposes the cost. Chapman said you could mention things such as, “If you have clear policies and people know what to do, think how much easier your life would be. Instead of having to make calls and figure it out on your own every single time, you had clear policy.” The same types of arguments come into play in areas generally considered the purview of HR, i.e. recruiting and retention. About recruiting Chapman posed the following for consideration, “Think about recruiting. Where do your new hires out of college come from? Where do they get their information about your company? If they Google your company, what’s one of the first things they see if you’ve been in trouble? They Google it, and they’ll get a penalty, or they’ll get some news article about the wrongdoings.” He also points out retention of current employees by asking, “How you would feel if everybody at this company felt good about working here, and no one felt embarrassed by what happened. Would that help retention?” Yet even more than these types of points about employees in the organization, Chapman believes it is important to make it personal to the highest level of the organization and try to make it as real and personal to your audience as possible. He says he asks the Board and senior management “What about you? How do you feel about being involved in it? Rather than being something that’s out there, the company, what about you? How do you feel about being here?” Obviously, the investigation will be critical for you to help understand what remediation your compliance program will need going forward. As Berland said, “Somebody found a way to get around your system. Maybe they colluded to overcome the internal controls. Maybe there was a group that simply wasn’t well trained, didn’t understand, or there was a group that was extremely well trained, and decided to do it anyway. But somehow, there are issues in your system, and by system, the overall system of the executive tone, the governance, the compliance program, the internal controls, all at a meta level.” It is axiomatic that you cannot finds gaps in your compliance system until you stress test it. Viewed in this light, your compliance failures can be viewed as such a stress test. Berland said, “Well, guess what, you just got handed a stress test, and this is where the system broke down. Now you know there’s a gap. Well, absent the investigation, as painful and difficult as that is, that gap would have just been sitting there.” The investigation will raise information to you about the failures of your compliance program that you may not have known existed previously. While there will be a desire by some folks to not give out any information about the investigation until it is completed and there is a final report, you must resist this at all costs. If the results of the investigation are not made available to you as the CCO or the compliance professional charged with remediating the compliance program, any such remediation will be extremely difficult, because, as Berland noted, “you’re just going off suppositions and guesses.” He advocates there be a solid line of communication between the people who are doing the investigation and the people who are leading the remediation. Otherwise, you can only begin your remediation in the most general terms and you will not be able to deal with specific gaps in your compliance program or risks that need to be managed. Such an approach can also be a recipe for disaster. First, and foremost, the DOJ will not give you credit and you may lose the types of benefits articulated in the FCPA Pilot Program. Moreover, the executive attention will have dissipated, or, as Berland said, “When you’ve got the energy, use it.” What about the always-dreaded ‘Where Else’ question in any FCPA investigation? Berland believes the key is “anticipating the question is going to come up, and having an answer ready, which is, “We are going to do a comprehensive risk assessment of the remainder of the company. We are not going to go out and look under every leaf and every, you know, check every tree, but we are going to do a very extensive risk assessment, and we’ll be able to come back and tell you that we don’t think there is a likelihood of other issues in other places.”” However, the answer could be equally something along the lines that ““we have found a high likelihood and we’re going to continue to take deeper and deeper considers that section until we know if something happened or not.” That was an acceptable answer. It was, you know, “here's the slice of the pie where we know something is happening, and here’s the process to look at the rest, given it really is kind of a risk assessment plus going forward.”” Three Key Takeaways A serious FCPA allegation gets the attention of the Board and senior management. Use this time to move the compliance program forward. Be aware of how your investigation can impact and even inform your remediation efforts. How do you deal with the dreaded ‘where else’ question? Welcome to Episode #23 of the Where Else to Go podcast. This week we're talking with Katie Hammel about visiting Iceland in the off season. If you've perused any travel media lately, you know that Iceland is hot, hot, hot. But Katie gives us some suggestions from traveling to Iceland when it's down right cold. Here's what she says: Iceland's tourism is exploding, but most people still visit in the summer high season. Go in March or April or September or October and you'll see fewer people. Go from November to February and it's even better. You'll have to take some precautions, bring the right gear, and limit where you go (as some places around the country are just inaccessible in the winter) but you can still do plenty of amazing things in the winter, and you'll encounter fewer crowds and pay lower prices. You can still go horseback riding, glacier climbing, caving, snorkeling, whale watching, ride in a helicopter, or take a brewery tour, all on trips from the city. Plus you might get to see the Northern Lights--you can see them via boat or on a bus tour, go in search of them by yourself, or book a trip to go float in a hot spring. When they are particularly strong, you can even see them from the city. Take a listen and understand why Katie thinks Iceland is a perfect place to visit: Here's the driving trip, complete with routing details, that Katie recommends. She's added in many of the activities and locations that we talked about. Katie Hammel is a travel writer who has been published in the NY Daily News, San Francisco Chronicle, BBC Travel, and other publications. She lives in San Francisco. She's been to Iceland six times and considers it her favorite place in the world. You can read more from Katie here, as well as connect with her on social media on Twitter and Instagram. Although she is no longer working with Trip Creator, Katie still thinks you should check out what they have to offer travelers. Thanks for joining us. Hello, and thanks for joining us for Episode #22 of the Where Else to Go podcast. Today we're talking with Julie Fox about the Minho Region of Portugal. I first visited Portugal in 2011 for a very short period of time and was fortunate to go back again in 2015 for a much longer period. I came very close to the Minho Region, and if I'd only had this information then, I may have extended my time in the country to go a little farther inland. Minho is bordered by the River Douro to the south and the River Minho to the north, the latter also dividing it from Spain. It has a depth of Celtic influences and also shares a deep culture with Spain. It's known as one of Portugal's greenest and most traditional provinces, and after talking with Julie, it's hard to understand why so many travelers pass it by. Julie says: The Minho region in the north which includes the historical cities and towns of Braga, Guimarães, Ponte de Lima, Viana do Castelo and Caminha, are rich in history, architecture, gastronomy and culture, and the landscapes are spectacular. You've got everything - beaches, mountains, rivers, forests. If you really want me to pick one spot in this beautiful area, I'll go with Ponte de Lima, although it's probably the hardest to get to without a car. Each of them has something special to offer the luxury traveler. Take a listen. Some helpful links: Portugal Geen Walks is a tour operator that specializes in the Minho and other parts of northern Portugal (walks, nature, gastronomy, architecture, culture etc). Find reviews and more info here. Carmo's Boutique Hotel. Find information, reviews, and booking info here. There are several Pousadas in the region including one behind the hilltop basilica in Viana do Castelo, one inside the fortress in Valença and another in a former convent above Guimarães. As well as authoring her own book, Money Saving Tips For Travel in Portugal, she is a contributor to Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guides to Portugal, Lisbon, and Europe, Travel 42 Guides, The Huffington Post, CNN and AFAR. Hello! Thanks for joining us for Episode #21 of the Where Else to Go Podcast. Today we'll be talking with Samantha about Namwon, South Korea. Samantha is a travel blogger and is currently teaching ESL in Namwon. She fell in love with the area and wants us to as well. Namwon is about a two hour KTX train ride from Seoul, or a three to four-hour bus ride, depending on traffic. It's an hour from Jeonju, which is rising on the Korean travel lists for its traditional housing (Hanoks). Samantha says that Namwon is a lovely walkable city, but that too many people don't know it exists. For anyone interested in traditional Korean culture, Namwon is the setting for one of Korea's most famous love stories, Chunhyangjeon. (Think of it as Korea's Romeo and Juliet minus the tragic ending.) There's a beautiful park you can wander around called Gwanghallu that has the story laid out, and you can also go to an amusement park based around Chunhyang. If you're interested in nature, Namwon is also one of the cities based around Jiri Mountain (Jirisan), one of Korea's three most important mountains along with Hallasan and Seoraksan. There are a bunch of trails of varying degrees of difficulty, and one notable short one that gives you a beautiful view of the city. If you come in autumn, you'll get rows of fall foliage, and if you come in early spring, you might just catch all the cherry blossoms lining the main river. If you like food, Namwon is also located in Jeollabuk province. The Jeolla provinces are considered the food provinces of Korea, so if you want good Korean food, it's here. Samantha offers the following details (and links) for getting to Namwon: English Hotline Help Take the KTX Train (about two hours) from the Yongsan Station in Seoul to the Namwon Station. Be sure to look for the KTX train as other will take you about twice the time. To take the bus to Namwon, head to the Express Bus Terminal on the Seoul subway. They have self-serve kiosks that include English. The bus takes three to four hours, depending on traffic, and takes a 15-minute rest stop break about halfway through the journey. There are two types of buses, one that has two seats on each side of the aisle (the cheapest) and one that has two seats on one side of the aisle, one on the other (will cost a little more for that extra room). Upon arrival in Namwon, take a taxi to your hotel, nothing should cost more than 5,000 KRW (about $5). Suggestions on Where to Stay Kensington Yechon - Offering traditional style accommodation, you may not be able to find this option on booking sites and the home site is in Korean. Try calling the English Hotline (link above) for assistance with booking. For your taxi: 켕싱턴 예촌a Kensington Resort - The site is in Korean; you'll find booking information here. For your taxi: 켄싱턴 리졸트 The Suites Hotel - Located a little outside of the city, this is one of the nicest hotels in the area. The site is in Korean; you'll find booking information here. What to do is Namwon: Information about the hiking trails in Namwon (in English). Gwanghallu Garden - About 2,500 KRW ($2.50) admission fee. More info here. Chunhyang Story - Read about this romantic legend here. Learn about Chunhyang Theme Park here. Samantha is a travel blogger at There She Goes Again and is finishing up her teaching contract in Namwon, South Korea, after which she'll spend time traveling to Jeju and Seoul for a few weeks before flying home to the U. S. You can follow her on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. Thanks for joining us. Welcome to the Where Else to Go podcast. I'm so glad to have you join us for Episode #19 featuring Kimberly Erin Davies talking about where else to go – San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. Kimmie grew up being taught that travel is education in a less formal environment, and has since been doing her best to practice this belief. She now works as a travel blogger, traveling the Americas, writing and inspiring others to push the boundaries of travel. She is an adventurer and loves to climb mountains, take multi-day treks, surf, scuba dive, and paraglide. Kimmie was passing through Chile for a short visit on her way to Easter Island, but fell in love with it and ended up moving to the north part of the country and a town called San Pedro de Atacama. San Pedro is a sleepy little town with a relaxed kind of hippie vibe. It is an open, free, be yourself type of destination, with wonderful restaurants, and some of the best scenery you could dream of. You will never run out of things to do in surreal San Pedro de Atacama, from volcanoes to hot springs, to world class star gazing and sand boarding on ‘the moon’, you will never be bored. Even though she has now moved back home to Canada, Kimmie makes return visits regularly, sharing her love of San Pedro with family and friends Some of the things that Kimmie recommends: Restaurants: Las Delicias del Carmen - A traditional restaurant, you can read a review here. Barros Cafe - For live music at night and a great daily menu, read a review here. Adobe- Go for dinner, read a review here. Blanco - For upscale dining, read a review here. Hello, and welcome to episode #18 of the Where Else to Go podcast. Whether you're looking to travel around the block or around the world, we're here to give you some inspiration to begin researching where to go. . . and where else to go. My guest today is Marysia Maciocha, an ex-lawyer from Poland, who describes herself as a crazy Polish girl traveling around the globe. She travels most of the time, with intermittent breaks for family events, and remains enthusiastic about the constant change of landscape, religion, mentalities, languages, and kitchens. Marysia and I talk about travel to Benin, a country in west Africa. Most tourism centers around Cotonou, the governmental seat, and even though French is the official language, Marysia says it is possible to get around relying only on English. Of course, she speaks six languages so it's easy for her to say that, but if you're willing to make a bit of effort with the language, you'll find Benin is an underrated destination full of interesting culture and history. Our conversation ranged from hotels and food to voodoo practices and the slave trade. Benin is full of things that you won't find just anywhere. Take a listen. You can find Marysia's stories about her travels on her blog, My Travel Affairs, and stories specifically about traveling in Benin here. You can also connect with her on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, and Instagram. Thanks for listening! Remember, you can also find the podcast on iTunes, and while you're there, please take a minute and leave us a rating and review. See you next week when we'll be talking about Where Else to Go. . . San Pedro de Atacama.

Bend is a great four seasons destinations. If you like Palm Springs, you'll like Bend in the summer. If you like Aspen to ski, you'll like Bend in the winter. If you like Missoula, Montana, you'll like Bend all year round. And let's not forget the great craft beer scene. Welcome to episode #6 of the Where Else to Go podcast. I'm still not sure I have the hang of podcasting yet, but I am having a lot of fun talking about some great travel destinations with some great travelers. If you're enjoying the podcast, please take a moment and give us a rating and/or review on iTunes. That simple little thing helps a lot in getting the podcast noticed by others. Thanks! Now, on to today's show on Marco Island, Florida. My guest for this episode is Kay Dougherty. Kay left corporate life in Boston for beach life in Florida and time to travel the world. She talks today about her current home base in Marco Island, Florida, telling us why it's a great where else to go spot for our next beach vacation. Kay says there are all kinds of things to do on Marco Island - many involving water activities. You can charter boats for pleasure or deep sea-fishing trips. Take day trips to see dolphins, go shelling or to see the sunset or just to explore the 10,000 Islands. There's a ferry to Key West. One thing she's looking forward to doing is taking a seaplane to Key West with Salt Island Seaplanes (out of Naples). Marco is a good place for adults only or families (not so much for singles or solo travelers). Lots of free activities - music concerts in the park, two beautiful public beacheas, weekly farmers' market, art shows, etc. A really fun thing to do is to go jet-skiiing in the 10,000 Islands with Captain Ron's Everglades Jet Ski Tours. There's an excellent small local museum about the history of the island. Marco is very low key, the complete opposite of the east coast of Florida. If you're looking for a low key getaway, Marco Island may be the perfect spot for your next beach vacation. If you want you learn more about Kay you can follow her on Blonde Brunette travel, a humorous travel blog primarily about international travel with her sister. All continents, cultures, means of travel and experience are considered, explored, critiqued and found to have some humore in them. Kay shares useful information and honest opinions; if she can get you to snort a drink out your nose over something she's written, she considers it the ultimate compliment. You can also connect with Kay on social media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, and Pinterest. Be sure to join us next week when we visit another island, Kauai. Thanks so much for joining me for Episode #8 of the Where Else to Go Podcast. We're on an island theme right now, having already covered Marco Island, Florida and Lihue, Hawaii. This week we're off to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands with Cheryl and Lisa of What Boundaries Travel Media. The Galapagos Islands recently made the top of Cheryl and Lisa's favorite travel destination after a recent trip to the islands. Getting so close to the flora and fauna of the islands made them feel like they were taking a step back in time. The animals have no fear of humans so they really had a chance to see them in their real habitat. And they add, "One of the highlights was when we snorkeled with the sea lions - they would always come play with us!" You might think that getting to the Galapagos Islands is too great of a challenge to get to and to see the islands because of the restrictions. However, it's an amazing experience to see the animals up close since they have no fear of humans. You will see some amazing land animals like the land iguana or Galapagos Tortoise, land birds like the Blue Footed Booby, and in the water you will swim with seals and an occasional penguin at the Equator!South There are many options on how to experience the Galapagos. You can fly into one of the main islands like San Cristobal and make it your home base while planning day trips to the various islands, or you can opt to take a luxury tour with a group like Ecoventura where your yacht is the “home base” and you travel between the islands with a stop at a different island every day. It surprisingly easy to get to the islands - there are many flights through Panama or even directly into Ecuador (another beautiful place), then it’s just a quick flight out to the islands. Chery and Lisa started traveling pretty much full time in 2007 after leaving corporate jobs and have since visited 6 continents with sights on Antarctica to hit their goal of all 7. Cheryl and Lisa keep busy traveling and writing for their their three blogs: WhatBoundariesTravel, TheTravelPharmacist, and coming soon, the FloridaSpectator. Their focus is on Gen X and Boomer travel with a goal to provide travel inspiration to their readers. They sum it up simply, "We love to travel and even more, love to share our experiences with others so they feel more comfortable traveling." Take a listen to learn why the Galapagos Island should be on your where else to go list. Then follow Cheryl and Lisa on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Instagram and YouTube. If you've enjoyed this podcast, you can subscribe on iTunes. While you're over there, please take a moment and leave us a rating or review. That helps this very new podcast get discovered by others. Welcome to episode #14 of the Where Else to Go podcast. We've just hit the three month mark for the podcast, and I thank all of you - friends, guests, and listeners - who've helped me nurture this podcast from idea to reality. My guest today is Ramona Flume. Ramona and I traveled together to Japan a couple months ago, and I've been looking forward to having her on the show. We're going to talk about the very Japanese tradition and experience of the onsen (bath). There are thousands of onsens around Japan and they are play an important part in Japanese tourism. The word onsen originally referred to hot springs and, by law, must include water that contains one of the designated chemical elements and have a temperature of at least 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of its mineral content, the water is often believed to have healing powers. I can't imagine a visit to Japan that doesn't include a visit (or several visits) to an onsen, and I hope this episode, and Ramona's tips, help get you ready for this where else to go experience. Some information referenced in this episode: Hotel New Plaza Awajishima Tougenkyo-Iya (ryokan) Hotel Iya Onsen (onsen with funicular access) The Japanese Spa: A Guide to Japan's Finest Ryokan and Onsen Ramona is a freelance writer and editor, contributing travel and cultural content for national magazines, newspapers, and websites. Located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, Oman is a travel destination that is surrounded by mystery and myths. Tourism is on the rise in Oman, and it is predicted to soon be one of the largest industries in the Sultanate. Part of the rise in tourism can be attributed to cruise lines making Oman a port of call, but the country's tourism slogan - "Beauty has an address" - is helping to position it as a safe, affordable, and beautiful travel destinaton. On Episode #11 of the Where Else to Go podcast, I'm joined by Nicole Brewer, a Detroit native, who has been living and working in Nizwa, Oman, for the past three years. She says she's found the locals to be extremely nice and accommodating, and wishes more people would experience the beauty that Oman has to offer. A couple of the resorts that Nicole loves are the Shangri-La in Muscat and a 5-star resort in the mountains, Alila Jabal Akhdar. And she impresses upon us both the beauty and the cultural aspect of tourism in Oman. To follow more of Nicole's adventures and travel writing, check out her blog, I Luv 2 Globetrot, and follow her on social media on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. If you're enjoying these podcasts, please take a minute to subscribe on iTunes. And don't forget to leave and rating (5-stars is always nice!) and revivew. Photo courtesy of Nicole Brewer
Thanks for joining us for Episode #10 of the Where Else to Go podcast. Although it wasn’t planned, we seem to be on an island theme, covering islands destinations from around the world. Our guest today is Gary Arndt and we’re talking about where else to go, Micronesia. Micronesia, in general, refers to the thousands of small islands located in the Pacific and comprised of several countries. These countries include: Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, and the United States with three territories (Guarm, Northern Mariana Islands, Wake Island). Gary talks about his visits to this part of the world, gives some recommendations for divers and non-divers, and explains why – apart from location – this is one of the easiest parts of the world to vist. Highlights include: Jellyfish Lake on Palau Ruins of Nah Modal Pohnpei Lagoon Diving in Truk Island hopper flights and more In March 2007 Gary sold his house and he’s been traveling around the world ever since. So far he’s visited all 7 continents, over 175 countries and territories around the world, all 50 states and every US territory, every Canadian province, every Australian state and territory, over 125 US National Park Service sites and over 300 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Welcome to Edpisode #9 of the Where Else to Go podcast. Thank you for support as this podcast has grown and evolved, it means a lot to me. Today's guest is Jennifer Dombrowski and she's going to help us understand why Venice gets such an undeserved bad rap and give us some suggestions for turning that around, making Venice a great where else to go destination. We talked about how, just a few streets off the main area, you can find delicious, reasonably priced food, how to enjoy the other islands, and information on getting around and enjoying Venice. Jennifer says: "Venice is one of the must-sees in Italy, but there is so much more to the Italy's city built on the water than meets the eye (or your guidebook tells you). Venice is actually just one of the islands in the Venetian Lagoon and it's well worth hopping around on the water buses to see just how different one island is from another." Some of the islands she recommends: Burano: famous for its fisherman and lacemakers. Jennifer wrote a guide to Burano that's worth checking out. Mazzorbo: connected to Burano by a small wooden footbridge, most visitors never set foot on the sleep island home to the only winery and vineyard in the Venetian Lagoon Murano: famous for its glassblowers Lido: home to the only beach in the Venetian Lagoon and perfect for exploring on a bicycle Poveglia: the haunted and abandoned island Giudecca: once home to grand palaces, its now mostly residential but has great parks and restaurants Many of the recommendations Jennifer made in the podcast are small spots that don't have websites. When in Venice, find a local who can help you location the place, or maybe even make another recommendation. Here are a few spots Jennifer recommends that do have websites. Al Gatto Nero Venissa Row Venice Boat rental recommendation: Venice Boat Rent Jennifer Dombrowski is a location independent globe trotter who is based in Italy. She works as a freelance social media strategist and is an award-winning travel writer. She is also a travel correspondent on Traveling on the American Forces Radio Network. Luxe Adventure Traveler was named one of the top travel blogs to watch by the Huffington Post and has been featured by top publications such as National Geographic, CNN, Buzzfeed , and The Telegraph. I first met Diana a couple of years ago at a trade show, and since then have watched her become a responsible elephant tourism expert. Where else does Diana recommend? Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand, one of the true elephant sanctuaries in the world. If you’ve been to other parts of Italy, or love the slow pace of the countryside, Puglia may be the perfect spot for your next vacation.
If you've been to Hawaii or the Caribbean, love the island and beach life, Fiji may be the perfect spot for your next vacation. In this premiere episode of the Where Else to Go podcast, they talk about getting around on the island, de-bunk the myth of Fiji as an uber expensive destination, and tempt our tastebuds with a mixed grill for dinner.

Oh, good grief. I talked so long on the previous podcast, our audio hosting platform cut off the file at one hour. The Taking Time with the Apple Watch podcast, part 2, was one hour and 15 minutes! So, here is the final minutes, with a humble apology, and some important info to round out the previously posted part 2. Thank you for your understanding, and thanks for listening! This final 15 minutes covers adding and removing the watchbands, and my thoughts on some aspects that might prove frustrating for those with motor, coordination, or positional disabilities. Don't forget to write to fashionabilitychannel@gmail.com with questions, and we will be sure to get in touch, and even respond to your questions on an upcoming episode. If you are still trying to decide on which option is right for you, there are some critical details you should know, especially if you are concerned about the ease of use of the clasps, sizes, or style of the watch and band variations. This hour-long All That Glitters show will help you learn all you need to know to make the right decision for you or a loved one.
