Van Log Episode 15:This one's about my time driving my van along the Florida Coast. Along the way I found unique campsites, swimming holes and backroad rivers. Also kayaking with manatees and meeting a friendly, meth smoking, prostitute delivery man. The Florida adventure is in the rear view mirror but I have so many lessons learned from this trip… and I'll share a bunch of them with you here on the takeaways edition to close out the trip. Hold the date… Pedalshift 400 Live will be Friday April 11th at 8pm ET - 5pm PT. Check out Pedlashift on YouTube or pedalshift.net/live for more. Ask Me Anything for sure, the rest is a surprise maybe to me as well? Takeaways from the Jacksonville-to-Orlando Bike Tour Day 1 (Jacksonville to St. Augustine) 1. A Ferry Ride to Kick Things Off – The journey began with a ferry ride across the St. Johns River, adding a scenic and unique element right from the start. Incorporating ferries into bike tours always makes for an enjoyable experience. 2. Gate Code Saves the Day at Anastasia State Park – The planned shortcut to the campsite led to a locked gate, but having the code allowed access without a detour. Avoiding extra miles at the end of a long day was a major win. 3. Improvised Gear Setup on the Brompton – A key piece of the backpack-mounting system was missing, requiring an improvised fix using a monopod and zip ties. The setup held up well throughout the ride, proving that adaptability is key in bike touring. Day 2 (St. Augustine to Flagler Beach Area) 4. Bananas Are the Best Electrolyte Solution – Instead of relying on electrolyte pills, which can cause nausea, bananas proved to be an effective way to prevent leg cramps. A simple, natural solution that made a big difference in managing hydration and muscle recovery. 5. A Route Adjustment Shortened the Day, but It Was Still Challenging – The original 57.7-mile plan changed with a 20-mile fast forward, making for a shorter but still demanding day. Even with the adjustment, Florida's heat, humidity, and terrain required careful pacing and hydration. Day 3 (Port Orange to Rural Central Florida) 6. Headwinds and Humidity Made for a Tough Solo Ride – With no fast forward on this leg, the ride covered the full planned distance through sticky, muggy conditions. After the challenging conditions of the previous day, endurance and smart pacing were crucial to finishing strong. 7. Road Noise at Campgrounds Was a Constant Issue – Unlike remote wilderness bike tours, the campgrounds on this route were consistently noisy, with traffic sounds carrying late into the night. Sleeping conditions were impacted by a combination of humidity and the urban-adjacent settings. Day 4 (Final Push to Disney) 8. A Pre-Dawn Start Took Advantage of Cooler Temperatures – The ride began at 6:15 AM, allowing for several miles before the sun and heat became overwhelming. The early start also meant less traffic and a peaceful stretch along the trail. 9. A Fast Forward to Winter Garden Allowed for New Route Exploration – Instead of repeating a previously ridden portion of the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail, a fast forward brought the ride to Winter Garden, where new routes could be explored. This decision balanced efficiency with the excitement of seeing something different. 10. A Challenging Finish with More Traffic Than Expected – The final approach onto Disney property was busier than usual, making the last miles more hectic than anticipated. Despite the increased traffic, the ride concluded at the planned finish line, maintaining a long-standing tour tradition.

In this episode, we discuss the alarming development of multiple Russian warships deployed off the coast of Florida as part of a training exercise. These warships are equipped with hypersonic ICBMs, raising questions about whether this is merely a show of force or if there are active plans for a future attack. Alongside the Russian warships, numerous US destroyer vessels are also in the region, closely monitoring every move as the Russian ships are expected to eventually dock in Cuba. Could this be the prelude to a World War III showdown between the United States and Russia?

What’s the best way to measure a hurricane? As hurricanes continue to threaten the Caribbean and American East coast, Tim Harford examines the different ways of calculating their respective strengths. We investigate new German legislation which will force social networks to delete hate speech – or face massive fines. Some support it, and the government is determined to go ahead, but critics say it will restrict free speech. Red roses, romantic dinners and Valentine's Day might have become the modern expression of romance – but where do its ancient roots lie? And do traditional ideas about romance conflict with today's experience of gender, love and sexuality. Afua Hirsch reports. Hello! Thanks for joining us for the special Halloween episode of the Where Else to Go podcast. Joining me today to talk about Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando is Rick Howard. Rick began working in the travel industry for over 20 years now. Bitten by the travel bug at an early age, it seemed like a logical career path when he founded his first travel agency in 1996. In his role at Kingdom Magic Vacations he travels a lot, and in his role at Travel with Rick, he travels as well, but he also takes people with him virtually through the blog and social platforms. Rick has lived on and around the Florida Coast for over 30 years and makes frequent visits to the Disney Parks. You can follow Rick on his social platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Disclosure: Rick and I are both members of Universal Orlando's Blog Squad, a group of travel experts who have been hired as ambassadors for the resort. While we do receive financial remuneration for our time, we both have a firm policy of only aligning ourselves with travel brands and experience that are right for our audiences, guaranteeing you that you get our honest opinion about what's worth your time and money. Now in its 26th year, Halloween Horror Nights include nine haunted houses (mazes), five scare zones (transitional areas with staging and characters), and two shows. Rick and I talk about the horror genre, the craft and creativity of the genre, and our experiences at HHN26. The event runs through November 5th, 2016. If you miss it this year, it's not too early to make plans for 2017. Take a listen. Some helpful links: Information about the houses, scare zones, and rides can be found here. Plan to attending using this calendar of times and hours. HHN26 will run through November 5th, 2017. There are a variety of ticket options available. Rick and I both recommending upgrading to the RIP Tour which provides you with front of line access and great backstory information about the houses. If you're coming from out of town, there are hotel and ticket packages that provide great value. Thanks for joining us. If you want to make sure you get every episode of the podcast, you can subscribe via iTunes or Google Play. Please come back next week to join us talking about where to go. . . and where else to go, whether that’s across town or around the world.
