When we think of Ireland's past, we usually envisage an island shaped by two languages: Irish and English. But hidden in the history of South Wexford is Yola, a unique dialect that survived for centuries after the Norman invasion, only to vanish almost without a trace. In this episode, I am joined by Sascha Sanchi Cooney to explore the fascinating story of Yola: where it came from, who spoke it, what it sounded like, and why it disappeared. From medieval settlers to the Great Vowel Shift and the impact of Cromwell, the history of this dialect is intriguing.Get a copy of Sasha's 2019 book The Forth & Bargy Dialect at your local library https://waterford.spydus.ie/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/FULL/WPAC/BIBENQ/458376473/1314333,1Follow Sasha's work on Linkedin https://ie.linkedin.com/in/sascha-santschi-cooney-76a885188Sound by Kate Dunlea. In this REWIND episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Alice Maher (@Maher. Alice) Alice Maher is a prominent Irish contemporary artist whose work explores themes of identity, gender, mythology, and the body. Born in 1956 in County Tipperary, Maher studied at the University of Ulster, Belfast, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her practice spans a wide range of media, including drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, and film. Maher is known for using unconventional materials such as hair, nettles, thorns, and animal organs, challenging traditional boundaries between nature and culture, the beautiful and the grotesque. Her art frequently references Irish folklore, literature, and feminist theory, creating deeply symbolic and often unsettling imagery. Works like The Axe (and the Waving Girl) and Mnemosyne reflect her interest in memory, transformation, and the female experience. In addition to her visual work, Maher has collaborated with writers, musicians, and performers, enriching her practice with interdisciplinary influences. She represented Ireland at the São Paulo Bienal in 1994 and has exhibited widely in major galleries, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Maher remains a vital figure in contemporary art, both in Ireland and internationally. The Turnaround #RTTBROS #Nightlight The Turnaround The story of John Newton"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)John Newton was about as far from a minister as you could get. He was a slave trader, a profane man who lived a rough life on the seas. His mother had taught him about God as a child, but he had long since forgotten those lessons. He was, by his own admission, a wretch. But on March 10, 1748, everything changed. Newton's ship was caught in a violent storm off the coast of Ireland. As the ship was taking on water and it looked like they might not survive, Newton cried out to God for mercy. They made it through that storm, and Newton's life was never the same.He left the slave trade, studied for the ministry, and eventually became a pastor. But his greatest contribution might have been a hymn he wrote that told his story: "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see."That hymn has probably done more to spread the gospel than any sermon ever preached. It's been translated into dozens of languages, sung by believers around the world, and has brought comfort to countless people in their darkest hours. Here's what amazes me about Newton's story: God didn't waste any of his past. All those years at sea, all those experiences with difficult people, all the hardships he had endured, God used them to make him a more effective minister. His past gave him credibility with people who might have never listened to someone who had lived a sheltered life.I think sometimes we believe that our past disqualifies us from being used by God. We think our mistakes, our failures, our poor choices have put us on the bench permanently. But that's not how God works. He's in the business of redemption, of taking the broken pieces of our lives and making something beautiful out of them.Maybe you're sitting there thinking your past is too messy, your failures too great, your mistakes too many. Let me remind you of something: if God could use a slave trader to write "Amazing Grace," He can use you too. Your comeback story might be exactly what someone else needs to hear today.God is still in the business of amazing grace, and that grace is sufficient for you.Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out.https://linktr.ee/rttbros

Can We Cope With This Level of Immigration?

    The David McWilliams Podcast

This week on the podcast, we take on the two biggest issues shaping our future: immigration and housing. We begin with the looming threat of U.S. tariffs, which could hit by August 1st. A 30% levy would be catastrophic for Ireland, the most open economy in the world, with nearly €600 billion in imports and exports annually. While China retaliates in unison, Europe squabbles over wine, cars, and Big Tech. Meanwhile, Ireland, so dependent on U.S. multinationals, stands massively exposed. We then dive into the far knottier issue: immigration. Between April 2022 and 2023, 141,000 immigrants arrived in Ireland. Only 30,000 houses were built in the same period. You don't need a PhD to see the problem, demand has tripled, while supply has collapsed. House prices are up 7% in the last three months alone, now approaching half a million euros. Construction is down, despite a 47% increase in government spending since COVID. We break the numbers down: of the 141,000, roughly 90,000 arrived via active government policy; visas, asylum, humanitarian aid. With only two people per home on average, we'd need to build 80,000 houses per year to keep up. We're building less than half that. We're not arguing against immigration, we need it. But policy without planning leads to crisis. If we don't start managing immigration with data and foresight, we'll drift into chaos. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week, a special road trip episode featuring Celtic-American Roots music “super group” RUNA recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas, a four day acoustic music marathon and arts & crafts fair held every September in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound, that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Celebrating fourteen years together as a band, Celtic-American Roots music “super group” RUNA continues to push the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of jazz, bluegrass, flamenco and blues, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music. Seeking to preserve and continue a traditional culture in a modern age, RUNA creates the backbone of its signature roots sound from the musical and geographical diversity of its individually established band members.  Their strive for excellence and creativity blazes a trail for the future of folk music, earning them the reputation as one of the most innovative Irish folk groups of this generation. RUNA consists of vocalist Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitarist, Fionán de Barra, acclaimed drummer Cheryl Prashker (Full Frontal Folk, Jonathan Edwards), fiddler Jake James of New York, and three-time Canadian fiddle champion Tom Fitzgerald, who also plays mandolin. - https://runamusic.com/about In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of Ozark original Mike McGhee performing the Classic Child ballad “Barbara Allen,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater profiles the legendary Ozark song catcher, Mary Celestia Parler.

In this episode, Jim talks with Louis O'Connor, founder of Strategic Metals Invest, about a little-known asset class that's playing an outsized role in energy, defense, and global manufacturing: rare earth and strategic metals. Louis breaks down how investors can position themselves ahead of the demand curve—and why most people have never heard of these assets. 3 Key Takeaways: Critical inputs, limited access. Strategic metals power everything from semiconductors to EVs and missile systems. But most investors are locked out. Direct ownership is now possible. Private investors can hold metals like gallium and hafnium in secure vaults—and sell directly to manufacturers. Geopolitics drives opportunity. China's control over the supply chain creates volatility, trade tension, and leverage for early movers. Most portfolios react to the market. This is a chance to get ahead of it. Before the Greeks and Romans, the Celts ruled the ancient world. They sacked Rome, invaded Greece, and conquered much of Europe, from Ireland to Turkey. Celts registered deeply on the classical imagination for a thousand years and were variously described by writers like Caesar and Livy as unruly barbarians, fearless warriors, and gracious hosts. But then, in the early Middle Ages, they vanished. In The Celts, Ian Stewart tells the story of their rediscovery during the Renaissance and their transformation over the next few centuries into one of the most popular European ancestral peoples. The Celts shows how the idea of this ancient people was recovered by scholars, honed by intellectuals, politicians, and other thinkers of various stripes, and adopted by cultural revivalists and activists as they tried to build European nations and nationalisms during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Long-forgotten, the Celts improbably came to be seen as the ancestors of most western Europeans—and as a pillar of modern national identity in Britain, Ireland, and France.Based on new research conducted across Europe and in the United States, The Celts reveals when and how we came to call much of Europe “Celtic,” why this idea mattered in the past, and why it still matters today, as the tide of nationalism is once again on the rise. Ian Stewart is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris. His work has focused particularly on ideas of language, nation, and race in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Britain, Ireland, and Europe. He has also written at length on the late Scottish Enlightenment and is the co-editor of Adam Ferguson's Later Writings: New Letters and an Essay on the French Revolution (Edinburgh University Press, 2023). Sidney Michelini is a post-doctoral researcher working on Ecology, Climate, and Violence at the Peace Research Institute of Frankfurt (PRIF).
