Claims Sub-Standard Infrastructure Hindering Shannon Estuary Tourism

Clare FM - Podcasts

It's claimed sub-standard infrastructure is proving a major hindrance to tourism in the Shannon Estuary Region. It follows calls for a new council led strategy to increase marine based visitor attractions in Clare. The 102km area is shared between predominantly Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Tipperary and welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year. However, concern has been raised that there's been too much emphasis on land based attractions, at the expense of opening up more water based opportunities. In response, Clare County Council has pointed to an over €4m investment in the Vandeleur Walled Gardens, remedial works on Scattery Island and upgraded signage on the EuroVelo cycle route. Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says the roads in West Clare serving the route are not fit for international tourists , but that the lack of facilities for visitors to launch boats on the estuary is proving a huge hindrance. The spotlight has also been shone on the opportunities for adjacent villages from tourists landing at Shannon Airport. Last year alone over 344,000 visitors attended Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, while the Ilaunmanagh Park Run welcomes UK participants on a weekly basis. Newmarket-On-Fergus Councillor David Griffin believes incorporating local water based attractions can enhance this.

5-21-24 Tonight we're talking with Adam Bystrom, Josh Mahoney, Al Boyce and Josh Holbrook, members of the aptly-nicknamed 'Minnesota Mead Mafia'. Josh Holbrook has been home brewing for since 2011 and making mead since 2013. He discovered mead at his local homebrew club when a club member brought a bottle of an attempt at Curt Stock's Triple Berry Melomel. Clouds parted, angels sang, and Josh became obsessed with mead. Josh has won numerous medals for beer, cider and mead, including AMMA National Mead Maker of the Year in 2020, and a couple Best of Shows at competitions such as Minnesota Mashout and Hoppy Halloween. He is also a certified BJCP judge and mead judge as well as a novice beekeeper, and one of the organizers for Valkyries Horn Mead Competition. One of Josh's long term mead goals is to make mead with each of the 300+ varietal honeys found in the United States. He has 44 under his belt already and shows no signs of stopping. In November of 2017 Adam Bystrom suddenly got a craving for that sweet nectar we all know; mead. With no meaderies in the area and little to no availability at liquor stores he decided to learn how to home brew. Since then mead has been the exclusive beverage he's fermented with a particular focus on session meads. He's been fortunate to win awards in a number of competitions all around the country and is a proud member of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association. Making mead since 2008. BJCP mead judge, addicted to collecting Mazer Cups, thinks JAOM is underrated, and his favorite spice is vanilla. Al Boyce has been a homebrewer since the early 1990's.  He tasted his first mead at Bunratty Castle in Ireland, and was hooked. Orange Blossom is his favorite honey, Sangiovese is his favorite grape, and 71B is his favorite yeast. He is obsessed with Jamaican Sorrel (hibiscus), and vows to keep making Sorrel meads until he finally gets it right.  He recently moved to a lake home in central Minnesota where he lives with his wife Beth and his Golden Retriever Cooper. As part of a corporate restructuring of Shannon Heritage DAC, the local authority will be appointing two specialist operators for the services at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, Craggaunowen, Knappogue Castle and the retail unit at the Cliffs of Moher Experience. The Council has confirmed that all 66 full-time and part-time employees will be transferred to the new operators in April 2024 and that staff pay and conditions will be protected under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations. A tender process is due to get underway in December, with the sccuessful companies to commence operating in May next year. However, SIPTU Divisional Organiser Rachel Keane has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that staff need urgent clarity on the future of their positions. Statement From Clare County Council: As part of a corporate restructuring of Shannon Heritage DAC, Clare County Council has confirmed it will be appointing two specialist retail, food and beverage operators for its newly acquired visitor attractions. A key requirement of the operating conditions will be that all future service providers must support local suppliers and producers in Clare. All 66 employees, including 31 Full Time and 35 Part Time workers, will be transferred to the new operators in April 2024. Staff pay and conditions are protected under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, also known as TUPE. This restructuring follows the tried and tested business model at the Cliffs of Moher Experience where specialist retail and food operators are already in place. Two tender processes for retail and the provision catering services, including banqueting food preparation and food and beverage operations, will commence in December 2023 at the Shannon Heritage sites. It is anticipated the successful companies will commence operating in May 2024. Clare County Council's ongoing commitment to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, Craggaunowen, Knappogue Castle and the retail unit at the Cliffs of Moher Experience is reflected in a €14.7m capital investment being made in 2023 and 2024. The Local Authority, supported by government, has already invested more than €4m in Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, Craggaunowen, Knappogue Castle and the retail unit at the Cliffs of Moher since the Shannon Heritage properties were transferred from The Shannon Airport Group in May 2023, while €2.9m has been invested in upgrading the Vandeleur Walled Garden and Visitor Centre in Kilrush. An additional €7.8m has been earmarked for investment during 2024 in the Clare County Council owned portfolio of attractions, which includes Inis Cealtra (Holy Island Visitor Experience) in Mountshannon, the Cliffs of Moher Experience and Loop Head Light house.

He is obsessed with Jamaican Sorrel (hibiscus), and vows to keep making Sorrel meads until he finally gets it right.  He recently moved to a lake home in central Minnesota where he lives with his wife Beth and his Golden Retriever Cooper. Josh Mahoney has been making mead since 2008. He is a BJCP mead judge, and is addicted to collecting Mazer Cups. Josh thinks JAOM is underrated, and his favorite spice is vanilla. (and extra points if you can tell us who that pic looks like). A South East Clare Councillor fears the council may pull out of a commitment to take over the management of Shannon Heritage sites if the government don't finalise funding for the transition. The Department of Transport says 'engagement is continuing' between Shannon Heritage and Clare County Council on the transfer of the management of Knappgoue Castle, Craggaunowen and Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton has told the Oireachtas that a working group on the matter has now met three times, and 'identified a number of ways to support a transfer'. Sixmilebridge-based Independent Councillor PJ Ryan says if funding isn't made available by the end of the year, he foresees the deal collapsing.

Maura McMahon is a storyteller and spoken word poet whose collection of Irish tales, pirate adventures, and women's sovereignty songs have entranced and empowered audiences across regional venues in New York's Hudson Valley for over 15 years.  Her deeply engaging performative style is imbued with the Celtic spirit. As a character performer, Maura has embodied Grace O'Malley, and the Grey Sea Hag as well as Hippolyta the Amazonian Queen and Mrs. Claus of the Hudson Valley. Maura McMahon comes to tell us a story of a bold, complicated Irish woman of the 17th century who shares her beautiful name. She was first introduced to this story through a book by the https://amzn.to/3tYB3e0 (wonderful folklorist Eddie Lenihan, Ferocious Irish Women.) Known to history as Máire Rua O'Brien, our heroine was born a MacMahon at Bunratty Castle in County Clare and was a resident of the famous Leamaneh Castle in The Burren. This is a story of love and loss, of cunning and sovereignty.  How and why does this story matter to us? What it takes to care for your children and yourself when you're endangered The question of what it means to be a heroine: does it have to be about being “ferocious”? Woman's sovereignty and choice and how it can be found through partnership and outside it The myth of redheads and their fiery temperament The enduring nature of strong women's stories As a storyteller, refusing to drop the parts of the story are “ugly” or that the audience may not like, especially when the listeners have a sense of which side is right or wrong and you're telling historical tales.  Our show music is a compilation of traditional tunes, including "The College Grove," performed by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy: http://billyandbeth.com/ (http://billyandbeth.com/) Continue Your KnotWork journey...Explore Marisa's work and get a copy of The Sovereignty Knot : https://www.knotworkstorytelling.com/episode/www.marisagoudy.com (www.marisagoudy.com) Write your own stories in Marisa's online writers's community, the https://www.marisagoudy.com/sovereign-writers (Sovereign Writers' Knot. ) Follow the show on https://www.instagram.com/knotworkpodcast/ (Instagram) and join our vibranthttps://www.facebook.com/groups/knotworkpodcast ( listeners' community on Facebook).

Irish singer/songwriter Joe Kearns is blessed with the gift of song and the gift of gab, and generously shares both with us. From his house near Dublin,  he offers witty insights about the culture and pleasures of his beloved Ireland. -- Find out how to choose the best pubs, and why Dublin’s Trinity College — home of the medieval illustrated Book of Kells -- has a barrel ceiling. We talk of Kilkenny,  a remote monastery in the Skellig Islands,  the Ring of Kerry, and the Irish beauty of castles, lakes, mountains, and even a coral beach.-- Travel with Joe to the coolest music spot in Dingle,  as we talk of  the Celtic language and chat about colorful towns, a picnic atop the Cliffs of Moher, drinking honey Meade at a medieval banquet, and the pleasures of County Galway, the Wild Atlantic Way, and more.  -- Coddle and Barmbrack are probably not what you think (they're classic Irish foods), and I add a memory about Baileys on corn flakes.  -- Joe tells romantic travel stories set under Irish rainbows and "sideways rain."-- And then, best of all — Joe, a fabulous singer, takes out his guitar and sings a beloved Irish ballad, even using his whistle!_____Joe Kearns, now living back home near Dublin, is a world traveler and a gifted singer/songwriter, often accompanied by his wife, Olivia. Anyone considering an Ireland family vacation will be looking for the best things to do in Ireland with kids. This week’s guest has a lot of experience in discovering Ireland for kids. ::: Like what you’re hearing? Then please subscribe, rate & review Epic Education Radio. We would be extremely grateful! iTunes is a search engine as well, and so when you rate and review us, you help others find us. Thank you! ::: Ireland with Kids: Building an Ireland Family Vacation Itinerary Meet Jody Halsted, manager of the Ireland Family Vacations blog and a regular visitor to the Emerald Isle. Jody goes to Ireland with kids every year, and she still hasn’t seen it all. For a country the size of the US state of Indiana, Ireland is a culturally dense place to explore, with plenty of fun for the entire family. In this episode of Epic Education Radio, we discuss the food, the festivals and the fun that Ireland offers to families. Why Ireland with Kids? Ireland is full of fun, exciting and educational opportunities for traveling families. There are castles and stories of princesses and fairies. There are festivals, music, and art. In addition, Ireland has a history steeped in science and literature. Writers, scholars, astronomers and other scientists called Ireland home. Their stories are waiting to be explored in Ireland with kids. Then there are the beautiful nature walks and the filming locations. Ireland’s natural beauty is unique in the world. That’s one reason why movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and TV shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones filmed here. In addition to all this, Ireland is safe and full of friendly English-speaking people. Therefore, there is no language barrier for visitors from North America, Australia and elsewhere. Despite this, she says, Ireland family travel is not a focus of Ireland Tourism Board. There are families who want to explore Ireland with teens. There are young parents who want to visit Ireland with toddlers. However, Jody says that the country markets mainly to older travelers and honeymooners. Families just aren’t their target demographic. This is an opportunity that Jody has taken advantage of. With her site, Ireland Family Vacations, she helps families who want to visit Ireland with children get the most out of their time there. In today’s episode, we discuss her travel tips for a great Ireland family vacation itinerary. Listen in for many fun and educational opportunities in Ireland for kids. Best Times to Visit Ireland with Kids Weather-wise, there is no one distinct season to visit Ireland with children. That said, there will be some rain almost every day, so plan your wardrobe accordingly. Even in the middle of summer, you should plan for the chance of wet weather and cooler temperatures. Weather aside, Jody recommended visiting in the shoulder seasons. July and August are peak times. With this in mind, consider visiting Ireland with kids in May/June or in September. During these shoulder seasons, you’ll find smaller crowds and slightly better weather. Events in Ireland for Kids Jody talks about the music festivals and the Christmas Markets in Ireland. Whether you’re in Ireland with babies or in Ireland with teens, there will always be something great to see and do. We also talk about St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, which is quite different than what many people might expect. Many an Ireland family vacation itinerary includes Saint Patrick's Day in Dublin or elsewhere. Yet you should be aware that it is not the booze-fueled party that you may find in North America. Sure, a lot of bars in the big cities are cashing in on the holiday’s notorious reputation. But you can enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland with children without going on a beer-guzzling bender. For many Irish families, St. Patrick'ds Day is a holy day. In fact, for many places in Ireland, the pubs are closed and people are at home having a feast with their families. Food in Ireland for Kids When considering Ireland family travel, many parents want to know about food options. In case you’re wondering, yes, you’ll find lots of potato dishes when you visit Ireland, but as Jody explains, there is much more than that. Most of Ireland is rural, she explains, so you can expect much of the menu items to be local. Local vegetables, meats, and fish, in particular. Picky eaters will find chicken cutlets, shepherd's pie and fish and chips just about everywhere, and menus are clearly marked for allergies. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, she says, just ask. There’s a good chance that they can whip up some standard dishes for you off-menu.   10 Days in Ireland with Kids: Ireland Travel Itinerary Jody has discovered that most people are looking for a nine to ten-day Ireland family vacation itinerary. That's usually five weekdays bookended by two weekends. Most people fly in and out of Dublin. But if you want to see more, she recommends starting in Dublin but then flying out of Shannon or Cork. Dublin with Kids You could spend your entire trip in and around Dublin with kids if you wanted, says Jody. There is so much to do in Dublin with children, but Ireland is more than its capital city! If your Ireland travel itinerary is around ten days, then spend two days or less in Dublin with children. One of her top recommendations here is the Museum of Archaeology. You can be in Ireland with tweens, teens, or toddlers, and you’ll find something interesting here. More recommendations on Dublin for kids in the interview. Cork with Kids or Kilkenny with Kids? After leaving Dublin, Jody says it’s time to make some decisions. With limited time, you may need to decide between visiting Cork or Kilkenny. In Cork, you have the Blarney Castle, the Black Rock Castle, and all of the history of the Titanic’s Voyage. You also have the tour of the Jamison Factory. Whiskey drinker or not, Jody says that this is a surprisingly interesting tour (I know I love visiting similar places). In Kilkenny, you have one of the only round towers where you can climb all the way to the top. In addition, Kilkenny has something special for sports fans: hurling. This Irish sport resembles something between rugby and field hockey, and you can watch a game in Kilkenny. Killarney, Limerick, & Much More From here, Jody describes so many more things to do in Ireland with kids. We talk about the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula. She tells me about the Bunratty Castle and its historical reenactments. We also discuss the merits and dangers of visiting Skellig Michael. This is the UNESCO Heritage site where Star Wars: The Last Jedi was filmed, but it's not built for tourism. (Spoiler alert: don’t visit with little kids). There is one of the most information-rich episodes I’ve ever recorded. If you’re planning am Ireland travel itinerary — or know someone who is — then this is the episode for you. I simply can’t write it all down here. Listen in and hear for yourself! Timecodes: In This Episode 02:36 Intro 03:39 Homeschooling 05:27 Why Visit Ireland? For families looking for a perfectly tailored Ireland vacation, Jody offers Ireland vacation coaching, working with your family to help you choose the perfect lodging, destinations, and activities to fit your budget, interests, and expectations. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL TIPS Get an international driver's license from AAA if you are renting a car Sign up for SMART Travel enrollment program to get alerts when we you are traveling overseas Purchase "cancel for any reason" travel insurance Alert your bank and credit card companies in advance to let them know about your travel plans Get foreign currency from your bank in advance If heading to Europe, make sure you have a chip and pin card Check with your bank to see if they have partner banks in the country you are traveling Get a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees Turn off your data and voice roaming and look into either international plans, use WiFi or get a MiFi device Press and hold 0 to get the + sign to call internationally SAMPLE IRELAND ITINERARY Plan on staying at least 10 to 14 days. If possible, fly into Dublin and out of Shannon so you aren't backtracking and it is very easy to fly in and out of Shannon. Then plan on doing a loop through the South. Spend two days exploring Dublin Head down to Kilkenny with a stop enroute in the Wicklow mountains Then either go into Cork or go over to Killarney where you can find the Ring of Kerry and Dingle with three days in either Then head to the northwest and the Cliffs of Moher and Shannon IRELAND FAMILY TRAVEL TIPS Don't drive in Dublin, take the bus from the airport into town Fly out of Shannon airport if you can Stay at least two nights in each location when traveling with kids Ireland is the size of Indiana, but you still can't see and do everything you want to do in 10 days Print off a map of Ireland to see how far it is from place to place and to help you plan your route Rent the smallest car you can because the roads are very narrow In Ireland you will need to purchase a collision damage waiver on your car rental The Office of Public Works has a family pass that will get you into many sights across Ireland The Dublin Pass includes transportation into the city and places like the Guinness storehouse, the Dublin Zoo, as well as museums and castles If you plan on visiting the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty Castle in the same day, you can get a dual ticket on the Shannon Heritage website Be sure to try the Irish Breakfast, black pudding (blood sausage), and some of their hyper-local, naturally-grown foods Visit the Cliffs of Moher and major sites in the afternoon after the tour buses have left BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Jody recommends Cliffs of Moher, O'Brien's tower, Bunratty Castle, or Malahide Castle as they all offer beautiful backdrops. For the Cliffs of Moher, the best time to visit would be is the afternoon after the tour buses have come and gone and the sunset is gorgeous. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Jody does a lot of hiking in Ireland so she recommends Keen hiking boots and Keen sandals for water sports. She also likes the Molly ScotteVest jacket, which is great for layering with lots of pockets. She also uses convertible pants because they dry so fast. Also bring layers like a light wool shirt and raingear, but it generally doesn't get colder than 50 and higher than 72 degrees. APP OF THE WEEK If you are traveling overseas, we recommend using Google Translate. You may also want to download a phrasebook app that works offline and if you want to learn some language before you go, check out Duolingo. We won in the Best None of the Above Band category, which I guess adequately describes us. I also came in second for Best Strings. Unfortunately, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast did not place at all. So either, we didn't get enough votes or the Music Awards are not yet ready to accept podcasts as comparable radio shows. Either way, no win. But dang it, I'm gonna try again next year! – Order Victims of Irish Music Now – 17 Free Celtic Music Downloads for St. Patrick's Day – Link to the Podcast.
