“If we only knew how hard it would be, we probably wouldn't have done it.”   About ten years ago, I found myself lying on a mattress in the middle of an empty room. The only thing protecting me from the outside was a mosquito net and a man who sat on a bucket right outside the entrance.    I spent many nights crying out to God and asking, “Why Me?” He reminded me that I was created for connection and that I was created to be a voice for good. I knew at that point that I would have to fight, fight for myself and fight for the community I was serving. But that together, in partnership with God, we were going to create a beautiful community.    In my discomfort, I found all the answers I was looking for. So I encourage you to embrace discomfort because, in that, you will find purpose and true alignment.

On this episode of Fostering Change we sit down with Sensei Dave Armstrong Motivational Speaker Life Coach Mentor Unlimited Potential Network Academy Sensei Dave Armstrong, Motivational Speaker, Life Coach and at-risk youth expert! He grew up as a product of a broken family, foster care, youth correction facilities all while dealing with his only parent (his mother) dying when he was 13 years old.. After overcoming all of these obstacles in life and defying his destiny, he decided served humanity by dedicating 20+ years towards helping people better their lives and their relationships with their children or the children they work with. After Sensei Dave retired from 24- years of Active Duty Military Service he decided to open Unlimited Potential Network Academy Life Coaching and to publish his amazing motivational autobiography, Why Me, My Fight For Life available on amazon and on www.whyme.world. Sensei Dave Armstrong was a product of a broken family, foster care, youth correction facilities and a deceased, only parent at the age of 13. As an “at-risk” youth and a “product” of the inner-city educational system, young Sensei Dave was predestined to run with gangs, NOT graduate high school and be dead or in jail by the age of 18. After his mother passed away Sensei Dave lost all contact with his family and was in and out of boys homes, juvenile detention, and foster homes in California until he turned 18 and “transitioned” out of state custody. BUT…along the way he was influenced by many AMAZING people, two of which were; his CASA, Ron Barnick, an Air Force pilot and Sensei Otto Johnson, his first martial arts instructor. Without their mentoring Sensei Dave Armstrong would not have been able to mentor, guide, help and motivate the 1000's of youth, mentors, foster parents and humanity as he has done for years now. Sensei Dave is now retired after 24-years of service to our country in the U.S. Air Force, he has also sat on the Board of Directors as Vice President for non-profit organizations, created his own Martial Arts Mentoring program and owned three martial arts schools in the United States. As a U.S. Air Force Veteran Sensei Dave has been able to travel and see the world, spreading his positive and motivational personality from country to country. Currently Sensei Dave is a Professional Life Coach and Motivational Speaker, and tours around the United States and Europe helping individuals and companies achieve their personal and professional goals. From The Author “I truly hope that this book finds its place in your heart and is able to help you in some sort of way. I truly believe that I had to go through so much in order to better help humanity and bring people closer to true happiness within their lives. This is not a “feel good book”, it is a PERSPECTIVE book, it is a GUIDANCE book and it is a REAL LIFE book. I will take you through a journey of my life and events within but, I also hope to give you, the reader some enlightenment and tools to help you personally or to help you better work with at-risk youth or adults.”Website: www.upna.netFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SenseiDaveArmTwitter: @UP_N_AInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/upnadotnet/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/UnlimitedPotentialNetworkAcd See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

SHOW NOTES: On this show….we are flipping the script and answering the call. Why You? Why Not You? Now, I didn't come to this revelation on my own but I did adopt it as a way to overcome that woe-is-me kind of feeling. What if the things you're struggling with are not the raw deal delivered by the universe that you think they are. What if these things happening to you are actually happening FOR you. No pain, no change. Sometimes we need to feel discomfort to seek comfort. What's the lesson here? Shoot if we knew that it would ruin all the fun! Your journey is about discovery, challenges, and triumphs in no particular order and sometimes happening at random. So...why you? How often do you ask yourself that question? It's usually accompanied by an eye roll and an exasperated release of breath. UGH, WHY Me?  You might also echo that statement with things like….” figures, not again, not today, why is this always happening to me? It can feel like life is out to get you or that terrible things are hovering over you just waiting to drop. Maybe you feel like you have a target on your back or a sign on your forehead but whatever it is….bad things happen to you.  And to make matters worse, they aren't isolated incidents that happen once in a while. It's blow after blow after blow! When are you going to catch a break? This feeling is perpetual and once you're on auto-repeat, it's hard to shut it off. You start over-generalizing with overarching ideas like “ I ALWAYS, or I NEVER”. You shoot new opportunities down before you ever even try, accepting that nothing EVER works out for you so why bother. Jordan Brown gives us 4 BIG Reasons Why You're Feeling Stuck in Life (With Solutions) found on the menatalhealthupdate.com Feeling Stuck Reason 1: You Think There's No Hope for Any Change Feeling Stuck Reason 2: You're Stuck in a Dead-End Job Feeling Stuck Reason 3: You Don't Like Where You Live Feeling Stuck Reason 4: Your Relationships Are Draining You Someone once told me, “the day starts and ends with you”. I love these little nuggets of inspiration that burrow deep in your mind but are easy to recall to make sense of the world or to deliver just the right amount of momentum and focus.  You are in charge of how you react to challenging situations, the people involved, the innocent bystander, and even the thoughts in your head. You can see any situation as a good thing or a bad thing and you don't even have to cock your head funny or close one eye. You have the power to view your life through different lenses.  When you wake in the morning, you are in charge of the first thought that enters your brain. Now, sometimes, circumstances make it very difficult to wake up to rainbows in the sky and bluebirds singing on your windowsill - but you can choose to use your circumstances as motivators instead of limiters. Your choice.  Robert Taibbi shares his ideas on a common feeling; When You Feel You Don't Deserve to Be Happy Well, here are some of the common sources of  self-sabotage, see if you identify with any: Past sin(s) Survivor's guilt Trauma Parental worry Feeling guilty if you're happy Deserving happiness   Make amends Realize you did the best you could do at the time Resolve your trauma Directly work on your self-criticism Directly treat your anxiety and/or depression Carry your life's lessons forward Before you can really identify the good AND bad in your life, you need a better vantage point. Why do you think it's important to “find gratitude”? You know that is a huge buzz phrase but what does it really mean and why is there such a push to do it?  With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. ... Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. It helps climb you out of the darker regions in your mind to your frontal cortex where you can get a better vantage point. There you find patience, reason, and self-control.  Finding gratitude helps you put life into perspective. It delivers a healthy balance in what can seem like an overwhelming sea of negativity. With this new perspective, you can start to see the lessons and gifts instead of just the pain and misery.  enée Fishman enlightens us with 7 Ways That Life is Happening FOR You, Not TO You (1) To Teach You a Lesson (2) To Serve Your Awakening (3) To Catalyze Your Growth (4) To Deepen Your Empathy  (5) To Test You (6) To Offer You Proof (7) To Help You Cultivate Trust KEY HIGHLIGHTS -  Feeling stuck starts with your thoughts.  Realize that you are the one who created these thoughts, and you can be the one to create new thoughts. Take a step back. Assess your current relationships. If they are not bringing you joy, it's time to do something about it. Regain your humanity by realizing just how much possibility you have, then seize the moment and do something about it. You are in charge of how you react to challenging situations, the people involved, the innocent bystander, and even the thoughts in your head. When your unhappiness has become your new normal, your view of yourself and what you present to others can feel unsettling and confusing If there is some regret, guilt, or wound that is haunting you and undermining your happiness, you want to find a way to put it to rest, to get some closure.  Happiness is a byproduct of a life fully lived, a life based on self-care and forgiveness that can come with new intentions, deliberate action, support. A life hardship or challenge may arise to give you the tools you need to serve others more deeply or at a higher level. It can help us foster greater empathy and compassion for others.  Sometimes the challenges we face are simply an opportunity to cultivate deeper trust that things will work out. CHALLENGE: to answer the call. Instead of feeling like life is delivering another blow find the opportunity that stands on the other side of your thinking. Use your power and this new perspective to push forward and accept the challenge.    I Know YOU Can Do It!

Hello and welcome to the Faith First Podcast where we try to give you some practical steps of faith to live faith first in the world today. If you are a follower of Christ you have heard at some point in time that each of us is called to share the good news of Christ. We are called to the big word— evangelism! Most of us are fearful of that word and many of us ask the question, “Why Me?” And, what is so urgent in telling others about Jesus Christ? The inevitable question we ask is “Isn't that what my Pastor or Minister is for?” Aren't they the ones who are front and center to go out and spread the Gospel? Well, today we sit down with our Lead Pastor Steve Darr and talk about the shift that needs to take place in our thinking because yes, it's you! And yes, the time is now!In this episode you'll discover:What it means to be in the last daysWhy so many Christians find it difficult to proclaim the good newsHow do we regain our passion and urgency to share JesusThe connection between love and sharing the GospelLearn other ways to reflect the Gospel when you don't know where to startThe world has been inoculated against the spread of the Gospel. A majority of people who reject Christianity, reject the Word of God and the message of the Gospel because they have received a Gospel inoculation. They have received a false gospel and not the real thing. Have you heard the true and real Gospel of Jesus Christ? Great! Let your testimony tell of the wonderful things God through His Son Jesus Christ has done for you and go witness faith first.

Charlie Sheen discusses the advancements in technology for HIV treatment and research.  Charlie details how the new treatment is actually equivalent to treating diabetes, and he's slowly winning the fight.  He had to experiment with a couple combinations of medicine to eventually find out what is right for his body and symptoms. He describes the painful process of going through a spinal tap treatment, to get a clear diagnosis of what he was battling.  There was a moment where Charlie felt like “Why Me?” “Can I Go on?”, but then he took a step back and realized it's not something like an in-operable brain tumor, it could be treated.  His mom was there for him during the process, which made it easier to get through.  As a kid growing up, Charlie talks about how much his mom was forgiving, loving and always understanding of what Charlie was going through.  This bond has lasted throughout his life, and insists that it still stronger than ever. One of the toughest things Charlie had to deal with during his HIV diagnosis, was the legal requirement to contact your friends, ex's & family members to let them know about your diagnosis, to make sure that they haven't been infected themselves.  It was a tough thing to do, and humbled him throughout the process. Post-sobriety and post-diagnosis, Charlie talks about interacting with his family with a fresh mindset and new attitude.  It was refreshing for him to not have any hinderances or things that were distracting him from being the best father he could be. Some of the memories of the lowest moments in Charlie's drug using days, are the things that keeps him sober these days.  He keeps the memories close, as a constant reminder to himself to stay sane, contribute, and be available for the people he cares about the most. Currently, Charlie is loving the family life.  He recently surprised his 16-year-old daughter with a new car.  Hear about his daily battles with his kids and how providing the best environment for them, regardless of his marital issues, is his #1 priority. It's a tough balance to discipline the kids while co-parenting, but Charlie has some tips to share.  Also, hear what album & movie Charlie chooses to be stuck on an island with. Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for providing a place for me to record this episode for y’all! No more Brooklyn closet recording!!!   What triggers our anxiety? How can we identify our triggers outside of the moment? How can we change our relationship with anxiety?   As you know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we’re getting serious about mental health over here on The Refined Collective Podcast. Last week, I spoke with Trauma Therapist Kobe Campbell all about therapy (tune in here if you missed it). This week, I wanted to talk all about how to identify stress and anxiety triggers outside of the moment.   My Anxiety Story I was experiencing heart palpitations at night but thought I was just sleeping on the wrong side. I prided myself on working 16 hour days, going out and being able to party, skip meals, and get up before the others to get ahead. It was intoxicating— I had friends who lived this way and encouraged a lifestyle of ‘I’ll sleep when I’m dead.’ The problem: I was being rewarded for my behavior—my business was growing, I was a jetsetter, business owner—I got a ton of opportunities in my career because I was a ‘yes’ person.  Then, like an alcoholic moving to a bar—I moved to NYC. I’ve said for a long time, NYC is like being in the right place at the right time all the time if you’re open to it.   Manifested in the Physical I had an unknown rash all over my body— I joked that it was my body being allergic to NYC. One day I was shooting a wedding and almost fainted during family portraits. I stumbled and laughed it off but it was really scary. Then, at the reception bathroom floor—as soon as I left it left + it left. Chalked it up to dehydration— it was just a fluke. The next weekend, I went to the hamptons for another shoot and the same thing happened. The next week, it happened again. This time at church: a place I feel so safe. Within a month I was a wreck: Terrified of leaving my house. Going to church felt anxiety-inducing. Shooting weddings felt like life or death. Being on the subways was the worst. Was this my new normal? I must be really losing it. I couldn’t live this way.   Why Me? YOU HAVE TO LOOK BACK BEFORE YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD. Here are the patterns I noticed every time I had a huge panic attack: Lack of sleep  I was fueled by fear in my career: if I’m not working, I’m not getting paid — if I don’t get paid, I can’t pay rent, buy food, take care of myself. One of the most anxiety inducing scenarios is when our core needs are in threat of not being met:  Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: 5-tiered model pyramid approach to human needs. It goes from bottom to top. You can’t go to the next level without the previous level being supported. Basic needs are food, water, shelter, rest. Then above that is safety and security. Above that is belonging and love. Above that is esteem and accomplishment. At the very top is self-actualization. Lack of food + water (big stretches of time without snack / meal Alcohol the day before Lots of caffeine Overheated  It was like I had been driving with my gas tank on E for 50 miles at 100 miles an hour and then hit a pothole and my engine exploded. So when I got into a stressful situation like public speaking, shooting a wedding, being on a crowded subway... I was at a resting state of level 9 anxiety. The tiniest thing was setting me off.    How could I set myself up for success outside of a stressful or triggering situation so that I could be at a resting rate of 1-3?   Back to the Basics This is the bottom line. Life, work, relationships CANNOT happen if these aren’t happening first. BACK TO MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS Sleep 7-8 hours The Sleep Revolution by Ariana Huffington Eat 3x day  Have snacks with me at all times Meditate daily + prayer— even if it’s brief Workout— even if (maybe especially if) you don’t feel like it Then I took it a step further Cut out alcohol I gave up alcohol for 6 months + 3/4 of the way through that my dad relapsed into drug abuse. This was one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life and yet I didn’t have one panic attack— it’s like God knew and wanted to help set my body up for success. Cut out caffeine  I used to have one big cup in the morning. I tried to quit cold turkey, but it wasn’t working. Research coffee withdrawal symptoms  Wanted it to be sustainable, so here’s what I did: Week one // no caffeine past noon Week 2 // half a cup of coffee Week 3 // alternated caffeine/decaf every other day Week 4 // all decaf Recently I was recording a podcast and I was feeling a little light headed and I was like what is going on? I had caffeine! Now that I’ve removed it, I can tell when it’s impacting me.   Taking My Thoughts Captive   “There were many terrible things in my life and most of them never happened.” Michel de Montaigne / French Philosopher   Public speaking— I once froze on stage + it was scary I was afraid of throwing up + having a seizure, fainting — which has never happened to me before on stage. I’ve always felt comfortable on stage. But then after I froze; it was all I could think about. Constantly strategizing about how I could make an exit: where were the physical exits, excuses I could make if I needed to leave—I’d just want to get out of there to the nearest restroom to lock myself in until I was better. Underneath the strategizing was fear: I can be safe for other people (duh im on stage). But if I have need, no one is safe. I can’t be seen as imperfect or I won’t be loved. Humiliation, death. THE RUNAWAY TRAIN of my thoughts + obsessing over potential worst case scenarios was taking over my life. What happened is I became more afraid of what could happen than anything that had actually happened.   Excerpt from Sexless in the City: Paul, one of the great teachers of the New Testament, charged the church of Corinth to be ever so aware of their thought life. Paul doesn’t say they should take their thoughts captive; he says they are a people who take their thoughts captive1. The assumption is that they are already a people who understand the power of their thoughts, and regularly examine the source and root of them.  He encourages them to keep that up. In Romans, Paul says to allow ourselves to be transformed with renewed minds.2 Later, to the church in Philippi, he says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”3 In other words, Paul knew something powerful: our mindsets determine our reality.  We become what we think about. What are you spending your time thinking about?  … I don’t think we all wake up in the morning as masochists. These limiting beliefs feel true because we’ve often had real experiences that act as proof. Our circumstances are real; it’s not like they don’t happen. Our past impacts our present and can prevent us from our future if we let it. That’s why the invitation of faith is so profound. Faith invites us to have the courage to walk into a reality outside the here and now of our emotions and circumstances. It’s a more ultimate reality. Faith beckons us to lean into the possibility of the unseen and whispers, “Just because you know a story by heart doesn’t mean it’s true.”5 Narratives are always on the hunt for new evidence. So if we’re going to look for it anyway, we might as well look for evidence of God’s goodness and what’s possible. To do that, we first have to identify the limiting beliefs we’re holding on to, release them, flip the script, and start looking for new evidence.  Put in the Work You can’t really do this in the moment. PAUSE / BREATHE Thank your body: it’s trying to save your life GET CURIOUS: What am I really afraid of happening here? What’s the fear underneath the fear? Even if the fear happens will I be ok? REPLACE with TRUTH What do I need to hear right now?  I am safe. I have everything I need Even if the worst case scenario happens, I am safe. I can reach out and ask for support. I am not alone. I am accepted.  I am loved.   Renewing our minds is an actual thing in science + scripture. Brains are pattern makers — we have to interrupt the pattern + look for evidence of a new way to make new neural pathways. Knowing what triggers fear/anxiety/depression/etc. outside of the situation will help give you tools to move through the moment.    LIFE ISN’T ABOUT LIVING FEAR FREE; It’s about changing our relationship to fear. Fear ignites because our minds and bodies think our lives are in danger. Isn’t that incredible? Acknowledge the fear, ‘thank you for coming for a visit + now…you don’t get to be in the driver’s seat today.’   Reflection Questions What triggers your anxiety? What things in your life calm, bring peace, and stabilize you? How can you get back to the basics? What is out of alignment and how can you prioritize it? How can you love yourself well this week? This week, I sit down with Dr. James Perdue, host of the Professor of Perseverance Podcast, where he inspires you to face challenges head on in life, and motivates you to be a leader to others. Each week, James shares the stories of his guests and their powerful message of hope. James draws on his life-changing event at 19, and how that led to many changes in his life until he got to where he is today. It's not out of pity; it's out of being kind.James talks about his accident at college when he was 19, that left him immediately paralyzed. He shares the irony of how he wasn't even supposed to be playing the football game at the time, and how that "one more moment" changed his life indelibly. How Good Parents Build Good PeopleIt was clear when talking with James the love he has for his parents, and how their strength was so important when it came to his recovery and journey back from his accident. Had James had different parents, it's very likely he wouldn't be here today, at least not in the manner he is, and with the personal achievements and victories he's overcome. As kids, we'd rather take a spanking than hear the words from our parents, "I'm disappointed in you."He cites the example of doctors telling his parents that he'd be too much of a burden for them, and they should put him in a nursing home. But his parents had other ideas. Why The Triumph Over Adversity is Key for His ShowWhen it comes to sounding out guests for his show, James takes a very deliberate approach to who he wants on, and why. It's not that he doesn't want to share stories, but it's important to him that the journey is the path to a victory: he wants to make sure they're really over their challenge they have to offer hope to the listeners going through the same journey they have to be able to help others and not display negativity  James also shares how he went through the 5 stages of grief after his injury, and how that impacted his recovery process in the early days following his paralysis. The first stage of grief is denial, and part of my denial is that I was in a wheelchair. The Mindset of PerseveranceWith incredibly inspiring stories from every guest, there is something for every listener of James's show to take away from For James, there were two in particular that he always goes back to. The first is Captain Charlie Plum, who was one of the very first guests on the Professor of Perseverance Podcast. Charlie shared how a moment of fate changed his life dramatically. How many times have you heard people say this is the last thing I'm doing, and then something happens to them? The second is W. Mitchell, who has gone on to become a mentor to James. When he was in a motorcycle accident when he was younger, it resulted in 60% of his body being burnt. If that wasn't a challenge enough, four years later Mitchell suffered another tragedy, and James talks about how Mitchell's determination continues to inspire his own mindset.  I used to be able to do 10,000 things. Now I can only do 9,000. - W. MitchellOn Dealing with the What If and the Why MeFor many people, we often have the "What if" conversations with ourselves.  What if this happens What if I can't do this What if I'm forever changed For James, the first five years saw him so convinced he was going to walk again, the What If and the Why Me conversations never really came up.  Later in life, his thinking has evolved, and he shares why these types of internal conversations are moot points. My thing on the What If is now, What If you don't try? You don't know what you can do.Join us for an incredibly inspiring and wide-reaching chat on adversity, resolve, grit, and the love of living to overcome the challenges that can be thrown our way when we least expect them. David moved from home to home, never really finding his place but starting a path that would certainly have led to him being dead or in jail. That is until he met a specific social worker that also ran a martial arts school This mentor showed David that there was more to life. David also had that same experience in meeting another man who was a former Airman who inspired David to join the Airforce. David then decided to join the Airforce and had to study for many months in order to pass the ASVAB. David shared many insights into fighting for a goal and pushing yourself to do what helps you the most.
