How Does Agency Culture Help During Economic Crisis?

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2020 26:24

How is your agency surviving the economic crisis? How can a great agency culture help during a downturn in the economy? As an agency owner, there's nothing more important than knowing your values and surrounding yourself with people who are working toward the same common goal, especially at times like these.  In today's episode, we'll cover: Is your agency prepared for the economic crisis? 2 Reasons you should always start with why. 3 Ways to find the right people for your agency team. Today, I had the opportunity to sit down with Mark Emond, founder and president of Demand Spring, a revenue marketing agency. Over the past several years, Demand Spring has grown to nearly 20 employees who work in different parts of the world. Mark is here to discuss why it's important to know your agency's vision and how to create a team that supports your vision.  Is Your Agency Prepared for the Economic Crisis? I always like to look at recessions and economic changes as a cleansing. Those that are prepared and are good at what they do will succeed. The rest of the agencies who are just winging it and reacting to the economic changes are the ones who really struggle. There are a few things you can do to make sure you are in a good position.  Prepare in advance. It's harder to make the right decisions when you're doing so under pressure or in a panic.  Identify which costs you can cut. Try to avoid cutting manpower. Instead, look at your billing and eliminate any recurring spending that is eating away at your margins. Work with your vendors to see what kind of allowances can be made for pausing or extensions. Know your why. When you can tell your clients why your service matters and what you provide, they will have a hard time letting you go.  2 Reason Why You Should Always Start with Why Most of you have heard me talk about knowing your why. Your why is your purpose or reason for doing what you do. It's your driving force that inspires and motivates you. Knowing and understanding your why is key to growing your agency because: It will make the hiring process easier. Think about the last employee you hired. Were they a good fit? If you don't know what your agency stands for, how are you supposed to hire employees that will help you achieve your goals?  You'll be able to provide more to your clients. How can your clients understand the value of your services if you don't even understand why you are providing them? When you know your values and the culture you want to create, you will have an easier time providing exceptional customer service at every touchpoint.  3 Ways to Find the Right People for Your Agency Team Let's be honest, building a team you love is hard. It takes a lot of work to find people that support your values, support your team, and are actually good at what they do. But the good news is, there's a large pool of candidates out there right now. Your team can quite literally be the difference between success and failure. So how do you find people right for your agency? Bring in your team to help conduct the interviews. Obviously, the final decision about who you bring on board is yours, but culture-fit is important. When you get the opinions of current employees, you're more likely to find a good fit.  Dig deep. Don't ask for references. Just don't. Candidates aren't going to hand over a bad reference. Instead, do a little digging. Mark says he usually jumps onto LinkedIn to reach out to second connections. These people are the ones who will truly know a candidate's strengths and weaknesses and will be able to provide greater insight into whether they will fit into your culture.  Hire for attitude and culture (and be creative with your questions). If part of your culture is being resourceful and scrappy, don't ask a candidate if they are "resourceful and scrappy." Of course, they are going to say yes. Instead, ask them questions that will help you determine their likelihood of fitting in. Values and culture can help you stand out from a crowd of "me too" agencies. During an economic downturn, this is more important than ever. Start with why and you'll find you'll have an easier time getting the rest to fall into place.  Want to help your e-commerce clients convert increase CRO? What happens when working harder doesn't work? Discouragement and disappointment become the norm. So why keep trying?  Because you matter! Your well-being is worth the journey. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact So why are you pushing yourself harder than need be? You have one life to live. One body to love. One heart to impact. Yes, you may want results faster. But think about how long it took you to get where you are today. It doesn't matter if you're underweight, overweight, or just tired, nothing happens overnight. Yet that is what you're hoping for. There is no magic pill, no magic timing. So when working harder doesn't work, what can you do? Remember... The K.I.S.S. ~ I'm just getting started! Hope isn't found in what you accomplish. Hope is found in each step you take. That step may be resting. That step might be walking instead of running. That step may be eating more greens. That step might be taking a vacation. That step may be about building belief. "One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!" Take your time and be present. You don't have to rush to get where you are headed. Walk in the journey with your head held high. Create your now. Do what you can do on a consistent basis. Rest in the process. Be diligent in what you do and patient for what's to come. Each step you take every day brings you closer to your goal, your overall well-being. REFLECTION: If you were to remove the results from the equation, would you keep doing it? Yes or No --- no maybe here! Why? Most of the time, it's because the results are attached to something greater than the measurable goals. You feel better. You have more energy. You have a zest for life. You sleep better. You have a kick in your step. When working harder doesn't work, change your strategy. Reframe how you view your health and wellness. Is it a priority? What are the benefits of intentional movement/good nutrition? What happens if you don't take care of you? Slow down in order to speed up! You are worth a longer journey. "Live. Love. Texas is a great place to invest in residential real estate for cash flow and appreciation. If you’re looking to invest, find the right market and the right real estate professional. Why? Most agents don’t know how to help investors buy or sell properties. Today, Clint Coons of Anderson Business Advisors talks to Jason Reynolds of Visions Realty & Investments, Inc., which offers client-focused service for investors wanting to buy or sell real estate. Jason is a full-time licensed broker and realtor in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. He has sold more than 300 units, closed over $40 million in volume, and hosts the Real Estate Now Podcast.  Highlights/Topics:  Why did Jason start in real estate? Followed in the family business. His great-grandfather was a broker from the 1950s till the 1990s in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Who trained Jason to be a broker? Steve Fithian, company founder and current broker.  Why be a broker working with investors? Few brokers focus on investment properties and understand how to look at them, find them, work with the client, and analyze it.  Why do most agents not work with investors? They don’t have the bandwidth or understanding. It takes a lot of knowledge, time, and expertise. How to find investment-grade residential real estate? Local Board of Realtors, find names of top sales agents, interview a few, pull MLS data, and perform due diligence. Do you have to be all in with either investors or homeowners? Depends on the person or company. Visions Realty takes pride in doing 90–95% of its business with investors.  What issues occur with occupant vs. investment transactions? Unexpected and unique issues that are unfamiliar to real estate agents that don’t work with investors daily. If someone wants to buy investment property through financing, do investment brokers have lenders to refer people to? Refer them to at least three recommended providers.  Is the realtor or investor expected to find property management teams? If you’re the investor, you’re making the decision. Get recommendations, but always vett them.  What’s the difference between new build vs. existing for investment property? Depends on the client’s goals, stage, and long-term plan.  Are new properties going to turn into a rental vs. existing property? Will that CapEx impact your cap rate? With new builds in the DFW area, typically you reduce your cap rate a couple points, as opposed to a pre-owned property. For an investor coming into a new market, should they find an area with more owner-occupied properties? Yes, it will help you to attract and keep tenants. COMMENT:I certainly put the cat among the pigeons yesterday, so to speak, when I mentioned that our dog sleeps in our bed.I said it in passing and somehow it took over my whole radio show. The feedback was heated. There were those of you who said 'that's disgusting, a dog in a bed is dirty and full of germs', there were others who said 'my rottie has slept with me forever, loves a snuggle'.Others claimed their dog sleeps on their bed no worries, others who said dogs belong in kennels, some hard-hearted souls who even said the only place dogs should sleep is outside. So clearly I'm a massive softie.I raised the issue of the dog sleeping in our bed because my daughter's away on school camp, and the dog usually sleeps with her (yes.. in her bed). Tucked up under the duvet, head on the pillow. They're both so cosy it's quite a feat to wake them in the mornings.Kate Hawkesby, Mike Hosking and Lulu the Maltese. But with my daughter away, this week the dog is sleeping with us. I feel under pressure to explain that she's just a small dog, tiny in fact, a mere 3 kilos of white fluff. She is also, as a Maltese, a 'companion' dog. 'Companion' meaning she loves and needs to be around people all the time - not a tie her up on the deck leave her outside all day and night type of dog.So why is that disgusting - given plenty of people sleep with their cats on the bed?And if your dog is a beloved part of the family, and clearly we're dog people I'll grant you that, then why is it so wrong that she sleeps on the bed?I checked with my boss and fellow dog owner after the show and asked if their dog sleeps on their bed. His does, and not only that, they're often joined by small children too. That's one crowded bed. How many of us are sleeping with kids and animals every night? But others were grossed out. Why?Most dogs are probably cleaner than half the toddlers carrying daycare bugs that wander into parents' beds all the time surely?I know this may fly in the face of the old master-dog relationship rules, and I know for many people without dogs it might seem weird, but if you're a dog person, then I think you'll get it.I can't even conceive of putting the dog outside. She's not a farm dog, she's a family dog.And in my opinion, a much-loved family pet is more than welcome on the bed!

Often leaders are focusing so intensely on growth that we miss the fact that our team’s emotional experience is suffering. And when they’re suffering, they’re in their Critter State (versus the ideal of being in their Smart State.) Why? Most likely because safety, belonging or mattering are missing. But how do you know who needs what, and when? When I do culture coaching I use three main tools to find out: SBM Behavior Decoder to help leaders understand what a behavior is communicating SBM Communication tools for the individual SBM Index for the entire organization Today we are diving into the SBM Behavior Decoder and how this tool can help forge greater emotional agility for your tribe. You don’t need to ask if a team member needs safety, belonging, or mattering--their behavior says it all. The SBM Behavior Decoder below will help you give them what they need to shift to their Smart State. Click the infographic link and view the Behavior Decoder. SBM Behavior Decoder Infographic What Do Your People Really Crave? If people are in their Critter State and craving safety, they’ll take safety away from others. They need their outside world to match their inside world. This could manifest in the workplace as someone spreading gossip, rumors, or fear in general. If people are in their Critter State and craving belonging, they’ll isolate, withhold information, or form silos—they will essentially “leave the tribe.” They feel they don’t belong, so they’ll behave accordingly… and their outside world will reflect their inside experience. If people are in their Critter State and craving mattering, they’ll take mattering away from others via condescending behavior and making people feel small. They don’t matter, so they make sure that others don’t either. Then their world will make sense. Discover the SBM Trigger of An Individual Once you determine what you think your people really crave, based on their behavior, you can begin a dialogue to confirm your findings. Ask your people - What is most important to you at work? Please list in order of importance: You’re on a team that has a plan, and people have your back. (safety) You’re part of the team, and you have equal value to others. (belonging) You’re acknowledged and appreciated for your unique contributions, and you are making a difference. (mattering) This dialogue starts the process of becoming aware and once we are aware of what state we are in, we can apply the appropriate tools to manifest change. Next, notice both the “go to” behavior of a person in Critter State, as well as what lights them up. If their “go to” is Belonging in Critter State, you may want to try giving them Belonging regularly to light them up. You could do this by saying “I’m so glad you’re on the team. You really bring a lot to everyone! The team is better with you on it.” Notice also your “go to” and what lights you up, as well as your family members too! The Net-Net When we give people what they crave, their critter brain calms down, and we can guide them into their Smart State. This is where true rapport, connection, alignment, enrollment, and engagement live. Oh—and high performance, collaboration, and sustainability are the results! Remember, safety + belonging + mattering = trust. Original Broadcast: July 2008 Monthly Theme: Names of God Now [Elkanah] used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh (1 Samuel 1:3) YHWH Sabaoth (Lord of hosts) Our final name to meditate upon this month is the most prominent name for God in all the prophetic writings ... YHWH Sabaoth, LORD of hosts or LORD of armies. Two hundred thirty times this name for God shows up in the prophetic writings. Why? Most of the prophets found themselves proclaiming the Word of God to a nation at war. YHWH Sabaoth brings to mind pictures of great generals who led troops into battles like George Washington, Robert E. Lee and George S. Patton. It was YHWH who lead them into battle and defended them. It's still the same today. We pray that God would protect our military from harm and danger. How do we know that we can ask for that? Because He is YHWH Sabaoth, the Lord of hosts. He also leads you into your everday battle and protects you from the devil. But you shouldn't take it for granted. St. Paul reminds us, "Put on the whole armor of God" (Ephesians 6:11). A general doesn't lead his troops into battle without the proper equipment. Read Ephesians 6 and see what YHWH Sabaoth gives to His soldiers for protection. Amen.

Episode # 2 “Why Most of Us Need Breath Training” Hi, this is Michael Lingard bringing you the second episode of Better Breathing Means Better Health entitled “Why Most of Us Need Breath Training” The fact that you are listening to this second episode tells me you know this is true and that you are wondering whether you could benefit yourself. I have been teaching the Buteyko Method of breath training for over fifteen years and have been delighted to see what a great help it has been to all those I have taught but it has also been a disappointment to me that this powerful health promoting work has not gained mainstream medical support. There may be many reasons for this lack of interest from the medical establishment and the public at large but two main ones come to my mind. As regards the medical establishment there is a bias towards disease management and treatment rather than health education and promotion, and with something so radical as this, they demand more scientific research before committing resources or recommending it. We now know that doctors are given little training in health promotion and natural medicine during their years of study and this has now been recognized and efforts are being made to improve this aspect of healthcare. So doctors by and large are reluctant to refer their patients to breath educators. We may also have to wait a long time for more research to be done since most is financed by the pharmaceutical companies who would not want to demonstrate simple breath training and other lifestyle changes could dramatically reduce the need and demand for their drugs. As regards the public in general I understand it is a lot to expect of them to believe that they need to train themselves how to breathe since they have been doing it ever since birth! They don’t need to have walking or talking lessons so why should they need breathing lessons? The second barrier to acceptance is that they not unreasonably go to their doctor for all advice on health matters, who either doesn't support the idea of breath training or dismisses it as irrelevant. The third barrier in the UK is that we have all become used to the idea that all healthcare is free at point of delivery and Buteyko Breath training is not funded by the NHS but can cost a few hundred pounds and that can be difficult for many people. I decided that perhaps the time had come to use modern communication technology to launch breath training more successfully, hence this free podcast you are now listening to. I hope I can make a small contribution to the growing awareness and use of healthy lifestyle self-help systems. So let’s start on this journey towards a better lifestyle and improved health and wellbeing. During my thirty-five years as a holistic healthcare practitioner I have found that over seventy five percent of my patients breathe badly and that this may account for much of their poor health or at the very least is contributing to the disease or illness they complain of. In fact I have found only a few percent breathe optimally and these people tend to have already been doing breath work in yoga, tai chi or other such training. There are two major causes of this widespread problem, stress of our modern lives and lifestyle problems including our diet, exercise and work. If you took time out and watched my video I suggested in episode one “Chronic Hidden Hyperventilation 21st Century Epidemic” you will by now realize why stress produces this dysfunctional breathing due to our ancient fight/flight response to stressors. The lifestyle connections are not so clear cut but from my research over the past two years I have found a strong relationship between what we eat and how we breathe and also that how we breathe influences what and how we eat. You may never have considered the possibility that you over-breathe especially as we are advised to do deep breathing, encouraged to take deep breaths when stressed and generally taught to increase our breathing to get more oxygen into our bodies. But we have been taught wrong! It is not as simple as that and the truth is quite the opposite. Over-breathing lowers our body oxygenation and in fact if you are stressed you will already be over-breathing and the last thing you want to do is to forcibly increase your breathing! To summarize the physiology quickly; we all need to breathe about five litres of air per minute at rest, and our breathing is automatically controlled, not by the level of oxygen in our body, but the level of carbon dioxide. The level of carbon dioxide should normally be around 5 to 6 percent ideally for optimal oxygenation. We produce far more carbon dioxide than we need, so breathing is the body’s way of controlling this. If the carbon dioxide level is too high breathing is increased automatically to expel the surplus, if too low, breathing is reduced to conserve it. So why does carbon dioxide matter? Professor Buteyko called carbon dioxide the hormone par excellence, as it has a profound effect on all of the body’s functioning. When carbon dioxide levels fall too low smooth-muscle wrapped around airways, blood vessels and other hollow organs begins to contract. This is the sensation every asthmatic feels when an attack is imminent, airways narrow & constrict and make it hard to breathe, this is one of the reasons many people suffer hypertension as the narrowed arteries demand a higher blood pressure and why others may suffer panic attacks through restricted blood flow to the brain. Many people breathe through the mouth rather than through their nose and this makes over-breathing more likely because of the large mouth compared with small nasal passages. Breathing through the nose filters out dust and irritants and so mouth breathing leads to more irritation of the airways. Also when we breathe too much there is an increase of histamine production that makes us more sensitive to pollen and other allergens. The nose is for breathing, and the mouth is for eating and talking. When we breathe through the nose dust and irritants are filtered out, the air is warmed if it is cold, the air is moisturized if too dry and most bacteria are killed off while passing through the nose so protecting us from infections of the chest. When carbon dioxide levels are low, the blood carrying the oxygen to all the cells in the body doesn't releases oxygen readily and holds onto it. This creates a sensation of a shortage of breath that makes us try to breathe even more, but as we breathe more we expel even more carbon dioxide and our problems gets worse. So perhaps you now see why breath training is essential for most of us in the West. But let's check whether you are breathing too much now. We're going to measure what Professor Buteyko called the “Control Pause” (CP). The control pause is the maximum comfortable breath hold after exhaling while at rest. It gives a fair measure of how well your body is oxygenated. If you are breathing normally and have good oxygenation, you will be able to hold your breath for 45 to 60 seconds without any effort. If you are very poorly oxygenated you may need to take a breath almost immediately or manage only a few seconds before you have to take another breath in. So let's try it now. Make sure you're sitting comfortably and relaxed and that you haven't just eaten as this will affect the result, wait at least an hour after eating before checking your control pause. Keep your mouth shut and breathe in through your nose a normal breath, breathe out through your nose and then hold your nose. Checked the time on your second hand of a watch or start a timer. Hold your breath until you feel the need to take another breath in, release your nose and breathe in. Note how many seconds you were able to hold your breath. This was your control pause, make a note of it and in the next episode will discuss how well your breathing is and what the control pause means. Surely just based on this fact alone, we should give more attention to our breathing?Learn more before you start on this course at just click HEREDuring this course you will learn how improved breathing will benefit many diseases including: asthma, allergies, angina, anxiety, circulatory problems, depression, gut problems, hay fever, hypertension, IBS, migraines, ME, panic attacks, skin problems and many more. The common factor in all these conditions is that the individual has developed a bad habit of breathing too much all the time, very often because of stress, some trauma, diet, or other lifestyle problems. You will learn how, by simply improving your breathing and a few other lifestyle changes you will be able to enjoy a healthier life, usually with improved energy, better sleep and fewer health problems. The Buteyko Method has been subjected to clinical trials that have proved its effectiveness and millions across the world have benefited from the training. Until now training was either in small classes or one to one and cost a few hundred pounds, even internet based courses have been over a hundred pounds usually. *With the new facility of the podcast we can offer a very good introduction to the training for free. *The Buteyko Method of breath training was the life’s work of a great Russian physician Professor Konstantin Buteyko who studied the impact of breathing in health and disease and gave this great work to the world to improve the health and wellbeing of as many people as possible. His first teaching of the method in the West was in Australia over thirty years ago, it has since spread across the world and has helped millions of people with many health problems and others have found it has improved their general health or their sporting performance and fitness. What he discovered was that the vast majority of ill health and disease is associated with poor breathing and in particular with over-breathing or chronic hidden hyperventilation. Once the individual’s breathing was returned to normal many of their symptoms and health problems were relieved or eliminated entirely.I would recommend you spend a little time watching my video on YouTube called Chronic Hidden Hyperventilation 21st Century Epidemic that will give you a useful overview of what you are going to be learning on this course. In this exciting episode, Peter Bregman shares his thoughts about leadership and the importance of showing up with confidence, being connected to others, and being committed to a purpose in a way that inspires others to follow. He explains that the most successful leaders not only know what to say and do, but are willing to experience the discomfort, risk, or uncertainty of saying and doing it. These leaders display what Bregman calls Emotional Courage. “Think about a conversation you need to have, but haven’t. You have all the skill and knowledge you need, but you aren’t doing it. Why? Most likely it is because you believe it may cause you to feel something you don’t want to feel. You might become disconnected from that person. Or they might come back in anger or act in a passive aggressive way that can damage relationships and put projects at risk. It could simply make you uncomfortable—and no one likes to feel uncomfortable. Emotional Courage is not how much you know—it is about what you are willing to feel,” says Bregman. The four elements of Emotional Courage are simple to understand, but not always easy to implement. To be a leader with Emotional Courage, you need to: Be confident in yourself. To be confident, you need to understand who you are as a leader and then determine who you want to become. Asking for feedback is a powerful way to uncover blind spots, while listening to and accepting that feedback is the key to changing your behavior. Building confidence creates the foundation for your leadership style. Be connected with others. Listening with a willingness to learn something new is the birthplace of connection. Following through on commitments builds trust for a lasting, honest relationship. True success depends on connecting with others. Be committed to a purpose. Create a clear, powerful, compelling focus toward a larger purpose in order to channel your energy and the energy of those around you toward a common goal. Achieving a common purpose requires extreme focus. Act with Emotional Courage. Understand when you don’t want to feel something and take steps toward it. Be courageous and act boldly. Emotional courage feeds on confidence, connections, and commitment. “The key thing to remember is to be aware of what is important to you and be willing to take the risk to increase your own productivity. That will have a positive impact on personal and organizational results—because you will be operating with Emotional Courage.” About The Ken Blanchard Companies The Ken Blanchard Companies is the global leader in management training. What Happens When a Foreclosure Goes Back Onto the Market?

Becky Ivins Movers Real Estate Podcast

What are foreclosures and why do they happen? To make it simple, foreclosures are properties that have been repossessed by the lender. The buyer fell through with their obligation to make payments, which can happen for a variety of reasons. Whether someone has an accident that impedes their ability to produce income, they lose their job, or they are going through some other hardship, there are many ways for a person to find themselves in this position. The bottom line is that if payments are not made, the property will be foreclosed upon. This is why my team and I tell buyers at closing that, “If you don’t pay, you don’t stay.” Once the lender takes a property back, it is considered an REO (real estate owned by a third party). On the MLS (the multiple listing service), professionals actually have the ability to see whether or not a listing falls under this category. Since this information isn’t available to consumers, buyers will need to trust the help of a professional to locate foreclosure properties for them. “Before someone has stopped making payments on a house, they probably also stopped maintaining the house.” In fact, I often receive calls from people saying they want to look at foreclosures. My first question to them is, “Why?” Most people tell me it’s because they want a good deal. At this point, I tend to encourage them to look at other homes. I will certainly pull foreclosed homes for them, but I like to show clients that I can also find them great deals on listings that aren’t REOs. Generally, my opinion about foreclosures is this: Before someone has stopped making payments on a house, they have probably also stopped maintaining the house. People who don’t have the money to make payments will likely also not have any funds to make sure the house is in good condition. The maintenance of foreclosed homes is almost always delayed maintenance. Despite this, there are a few benefits to foreclosure listings. From my perspective, I like that foreclosure properties aren’t being listed by an emotionally attached seller. The bank wants to get rid of this property, making them easier to negotiate with. That being said, most foreclosure listings are sold as-is. Whether the property a buyer is looking at is a foreclosure listing or not, I always advise them to get a full inspection. Going so far as to turn the utilities back on in a foreclosed home to do so is definitely worth it. If you have any other questions or would like more information, feel free to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Stephen is the CEO of Predictive ROI and the host of the Onward Nation podcast. He is the author of two bestselling books, speaker, trainer, and his digital marketing insights have been featured in SUCCESS, Entrepreneur, The Washington Post, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, and other media. Good Morning Onward Nation — I’m Stephen Woessner. Have you ever noticed how most people only pay attention to the final product of a successful business owner? They say things like…“I can never be like them.” or “They got lucky.” What most people don’t see is what the business owner overcame on their path to becoming successful. All of the struggles. All of the daily rejections. The heartaches. The betrayals. The rumors. The criticism. Even the empty bank accounts. And all of those lonely nights while they worked hard to make their vision become a reality. You see, Onward Nation, the only difference between the one who quits, and the one who doesn’t, is that the successful owner showed up every day. The successful owner worked hard every day. They hustled every day. They learned from a proven mentor every day. They worked hard to improve every day. They did all this…even though they felt like quitting…every day. And eventually, they became who they are today…a successful business owner. All of this is a very powerful lesson that I learned from Patrick Bet-David, founder and host of the popular YouTube channel, ValueTainment. Onward Nation, if you haven’t already subscribed to Patrick’s YouTube channel, I highly recommend it. Patrick is exceptional at teaching success principles and lessons you can apply immediately in order to move your business onward to that next level. And during this solocast, we are going to dig deep into one of the fundamental – yet underlying principles that I just shared from Patrick. The principle is fundamental to success — but Onward Nation — it is also easy to miss, overlook, or to take for granted. The principle is that there is no such thing as an overnight success. There isn’t. No matter what industry — no matter what sector — the companies that have achieved sustainable success reached their pinnacle after years and years of perfecting their craft. Successful people think about long-term wins – not short-term wins. It is about the long-haul, it is about endurance, and outlasting the competition not just for today – but for years and years down the road. So I am going to share some examples to illustrate this powerful principle. Why? Because it is critically important to realize that success takes time. Your success requires your full attention. Your success requires failure, it requires making adjustments, repositioning, trying again, failing again, reintroducing products, and maybe even being on the brink of collapse as was the case with Apple, before you finally, truly “make it.” My hope for you is that you will celebrate the challenges and obstacles that are in your way right now. With the right perspective – you will see them as the gift that they are. Each challenge – each obstacle – each setback – is actually making you stronger — if you let them. Each embarrassing failure is forcing you to think differently — they are testing your commitment to your vital priorities, vital function, and your wherewithal. Will you push forward — or will you quit, Onward Nation? My hope is that you will always push forward and never quit. There is no such thing as an overnight success. Instead, it takes persistence and tenacity over the long haul. The path to success often winds and swerves – and then ultimately – you make it – after 15 to 20-years of grinding it out and remaining focused on your vital priorities that you are then seen as an “overnight success.” To that point, I encourage you to go back and re-listen to my interview with Verne Harnish in episode 205 and listen carefully to how Verne introduces himself to you, Onward Nation. Verne says this is his 34th year of doing just one thing — helping companies scale up. His organizations and companies are devoted to this “one thing”…his books are dedicated to this “one thing” and even his family and friends are dedicated to supporting him be successful with this “one thing.” The discussion with Verne is so compelling because he takes some time to dispel the overnight success myth by sharing some interesting data points and stories. One of those data points is that there are over 11,000 new companies launched every hour all over the world today. Just think of that, Onward Nation…11,000 new companies an hour. However, the vast majority of those companies will not be successful — they will lack the fortitude — the staying power to effectively scale their business. For example, Verne went on to share that of the 28 million businesses in the United States, about 24 million of the total are solopreneurs and will never scale up. Why? Most lack the resources — and I don’t mean just financial. Often times, as Verne shared, it is not a question of “how much do I need to scale?” but typically a question of who do I need to be in association with in order to scale up over the long haul. Verne cited Apple and how the company had slowly moved along with their 25-year timeline — nearly collapsed — until Steve Jobs came back. At the time Jobs returned, they had 9,800 employees and were nearly broke. And likely all of us know what happened following the iPod’s release in 2001 — but it didn’t succeed right away…in fact…the iPod floundered a bit for a couple of years. But in 2003, it got some traction and now Apple has scaled to over 110,000 employees during the last 13 years. It would be very easy to forget about those first 25 years of trial, error, struggle, losing millions of dollars, nearly going broke, and then focusing on just one thing and doing it with excellence in the iPod — and then traction takes hold. Success requires a disciplined effort over a long period of time. Some people look at Gary Vaynerchuk, CEO of Vaynermedia in New York City, as this guy who came out of nowhere to leap in front of the social media space and is now super popular with a massive following. Couldn’t be further from the truth — and Gary would be the first one to tell you. His story is one of grit, tenacity, outworking the competition, and playing to win for the long term. When Gary launched Wine Library TV — his daily show — for about the first year, his audience was really small…almost discouragingly small…but Gary didn’t quit. Then year two…then year three…then year four…then year five, and then year six. Six years, Onward Nation! Six years of producing a high-quality show of 20 to 30-minutes of engaging video content — every day — that’s what it took for Gary Vee to win. Just think about that for a minute. The magnitude of content he produced. It is really easy to look at Vaynermedia today and become impressed with the success — heck — nearly 900 in NYC and five other locations across the United States — those are significant accomplishments. But to me, and I suppose it is because I’ve had the rare opportunity to be Gary’s guest at Vaynermedia, to go behind the green curtain to interview him and to learn from him, I know that one of the things he is most proud of — and he should be — is all of the hard work, the struggle, the determination to make something out of nothing. Gary truly enjoys the journey to success — and he would be another one to tell you there are no shortcuts to success. And just because someone gets paid over $50,000 to deliver a keynote today — like Gary does — there is precious backstory there and it’s the backstory that is much more interesting. Let’s take a look at the late Peter Drucker, arguably the godfather of modern day management. Verne Harnish shared with me during our interview that of Peter’s 39 groundbreaking books, only 13 of them were written before Peter’s 65th birthday. Peter wrote twice the number of books after he turned 65. What? It takes a long time, Onward Nation, to collect, curate, and share the wisdom that is deep and impactful enough to matter and add value to a lot of people, like Peter did. Or, how about Picasso? Of his top 10 paintings — six of them were painted after he had turned 50. And four of the of 10 paintings were completed when Picasso was 51. Again…it’s the long-term commitment to your vital priorities and vital functions…perfecting your craft with years, and years, and years of disciplined effort. I have mentioned vital priorities and vital functions a couple of times this morning — so if you want a refresher on terminology — just go back and listen to episode 203. I dedicated an entire solocast to the topic of the vitals in your business and the lessons I learned from one of my mentors, Darren Hardy. So let’s move onto another example of long-term success. It would be very easy to look at James Patterson, one of the most successful novelists in history, and think — wow — here’s a guy who has it made. How amazing to be that lucky — to just write all day — what a joy. Again, let’s go behind the green curtain. I had an opportunity to interview the incomparable Linda Kaplan Thaler — oh my word, Onward Nation — Linda is brilliant. She was the creator of the AFLAC duck and so many ad campaigns that I know you will recognize if you go back to listen to our interview. But during our conversation, Linda told me about how she used to work for James Patterson when James was the creative director of the agency where Linda worked. James and Linda worked together for 17-years and became great friends. As Linda shared with me, James did not become a great novelist by accident or luck. Instead, to perfect his craft, James would get up every morning at 4:00 and would write for four hours until 8:00 when he would leave his home for the agency. He would then put in a full day — go home — and be in bed by 8:30 every night. And he rinsed and repeated this process for 21 years, Onward Nation. Staggering. 21 years! Just think about how many times during those 21 years that he would have second guessed himself, called himself bat crazy, how much criticism he received from friends and family encouraging him to just quit and to give up on his dream, and so much more. But he didn’t. He remained committed to his vital priority — and after 21 years — he became the successful James Patterson we know today. Or, how about Henry Ford? He was 40 years old when he founded the Ford Motor Company with the help of friends, family, and several investors who collectively helped him raise $28,000 in capital in 1903. And if you look through Mr. Ford’s timeline, you will see trials, tribulations, blood, sweat, tears, heartache, success, followed by disappointment, followed by triumph, followed by obstacles. So, let’s put all of these stories and principles into context by remembering the excellent lesson taught to us by Cody Foster, founder of Advisors Excel, our exceptional guest on Episode 81 of Onward Nation. Cody said to me, “Stephen, don’t compare someone else’s front-of-stage with your back-of-stage.” If you only look at someone’s front-of-stage — what you see in the public eye — you miss all of the struggles, the obstacles, the pain, the suffering, the courage, and their zig-zagged journey to where they are now. For example…we could look at Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, one of Hollywood’s hottest and most in-demand actors today…and it would be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that his path to success was different…that it wasn’t full of struggle, grinding it out, working hard to be the best…and most importantly…that it took 20-years for Dwayne to reach the pinnacle of success that he now enjoys. An injury on the football field at the University of Miami that ended any hope of a professional football career that then he directed his attention toward professional wrestling. And then he worked tirelessly to perfect his craft…slowly…training…making mistakes…until he made it to the big show…22,000 people in New York City’s Madison Square Garden…and a pay-per-view television audience for his first big shot at a win back in 1996. And due to all of the excitement…he forgot to direct his attention toward the correct camera…so the huge at-home audience saw a lot of The Rock’s back. Did this send him spinning and worrying about the mistake? No! He got back to work…and ground it out for years until he won his first WWE championship. And then that success led to controversy and tension…which he battled through…and finally some smaller movie roles…then a movie series…then some larger roles…and in November 2016…a starring role in Disney’s Moana as the mythical, Maui, whose bigger than life personality is a perfect fit for The Rock. And if you want to see some awesome behind the scenes video for the recording of Moana – just check this out: But what if The Rock would have quit after football? What if he would have quit in his early WWE career and let the frustration of not getting an early break set him back? What if he approached the smaller movie roles with less than full enthusiasm and instead decided to hold out for the big one? What if, Onward Nation…The Rock had not been willing to invest the 20 years of blood, sweat, and tears to become an overnight success? What if? And what if you don’t? You will be robbing the world of your special gifts and talents. What if Napoleon Hill gave up and quit because he had not become an overnight success? But, most people don’t know the story behind the success of “Think & Grown Rich” — and how the first edition, per se, was a great book but not well-received by the American public. Why? Well, several factors. First, it was published in 1928 — just one year before the Great Depression. The American public was not looking for — or ready for — a success manuscript at that time. And second, the book was huge and it was under a different title. It was the 612-page “Law of Success” — wow. I own the book — it is sitting on my desk right now — and it is amazing. It is essentially a more comprehensive version of “Think & Grow Rich.” Smartly, Napoleon decided to revise and repackage the Laws of Success by trimming it down — making it more concise — and then publishing it as “Think & Grow Rich” in 1937, nearly 10 years later, following the Depression. “Think & Grow Rich” then went on to sell 70 million copies worldwide. Again, no such thing as an overnight success. So don’t give up, Onward Nation! I hope you realize that the struggles you are facing — perhaps the abyss you are staring into right now — is all part of the master plan. You are more talented, more wonderful, more gifted, more incredible than you can possibly imagine. You are a child of the highest God and were blessed with an abundance of talent — so don’t quit — don’t give in — don’t stop. Keeping moving forward — success is there for you — just not overnight. So with that…I want to thank you again for taking the time to be here with me today. When we look at even, we tend to look at causes that are visible to us, we don’t look at the cemetery, meaning the things that are not obvious and salient to us. Yes history tend to kill a lot of information that was not deemed relevant at the time. Just as if you want know the causes to become multimillionaire –you will hear beautifully well-crafted and compelling words of self-appointed consultants and experts, data scientists purport that risk taking and working hard are necessary. After all, almost all rich people took risk and work hard. But it doesn’t mean that taking risk and working hard make you successful unless if you take the cemetery of bankrupt people and force them to write their biography, you will discover that that they share the same traits. Therefore Taking risk and working hard are necessary to become rich and also a source to become bankrupt. And you only see the winners, not the losers- hence Hence History is written by the winners not by the losers The answer here is simple and easy. A system with small mistakes doesn’t have a high ration of bankruptcies. Why? Most people outthere are unconditionally afraid of failure without  conditioning what type of system they are in or what type of failure it is “Remember 2 types of mistake” Fourth most experts and consultants out there selling programs of how to get rich quick scheme by conflating benefit with absence of risk. Another of saying it is mistaking absence of evidence for evidence of absence. Just like discussing growth without concern for fragility: like studying construction without thinking of collapses. Think like engineer not like an expert who gives you prediction (hence knowledge which turn out to be fragile). Warren Buffett put it this way “you cannot succeed if you cannot survive”, hence first and foremost you must build a robust system. Yes Business Robust Strategic will not be release by the beginning of February but by the end of January 2017.  Life isn't about getting predictions "right"; it is about knowing how to navigate the environment and controlling it. In this Episode of the Physical Therapy Business School Podcast I'm joined by a very special guest… …Her name is “Vicki Smith” and she was the FIRST and remains the longest standing staff member of my own practice. She's now the REAL boss of the Paul Gough Physio Rooms and has been with me for 8 years now. In that time she has witnessed a LOT of changes to my business, the Paul Gough Physio Rooms… We've re-invented ourselves from a clinic that was 80% reliant upon referrals from third parties… …to a clinic that is in complete control of it's own client flow - with 80% of our patients now being SELF REFERRED and happy to self pay, in cash, as a result of the direct marketing that we do. Vicki has been there with me as business hit an all time low as referrals from those third parties DROPPED… …as insurance companies SLASHED our re-embursement fees… …and she's been there as I introduced the new “Value Added Marketing” strategy that has TRANSFORMED my business fortunes BUT at the same time, almost tipped one or two of my staff over the edge as we struggled to cope with the HUGE impact of the value added marketing strategy we adopted in 2013. Vicki is going to share with you much of what she's learned from working alongside me, what her best advice would to anyone trying to grow a business - as well some of the things she's learned about why very FEW people ever want to pay for physical therapy - and how we build a business in-spite of that! This is an incredibly authentic interview with someone who I consider LARGELY responsible for the success of my clinic and I'm delighted to be able to share this with you to learn from. Every practice needs a great marketing strategy - but more important than that, every successful practice needs a “VICKI SMITH”. Listen to the interview and you'll see exactly what I mean… - The bizarre circumstances that me and Vicki met - and how she almost “took her clothes off in front of me”… (2:38) - The early challenges we faced when beginning to grow the clinic from when it was just me and her - to adding more staff… (8:55) - How to let staff know what you expect - and why it's so important… (16:58) - Why people don't want to for physiotherapy any more… and what they will pay that you can provide instead! (24:50) - Why MOST patients want to pay for solutions to internal problems - not external problems like back pain… (39:44) - How to make your patients at home in your practice from the very first interaction they have with you… (46:05) Be sure to subscribe to the show AND please leave us a review - we would love to know how this show is impacting you. Have you ever noticed how most people only pay attention to the final product of a successful business owner. They did all this even though they felt like quitting every day. And eventually, they became who they are today…a successful business owner, Onward Nation. All of this is a very powerful lesson that I learned from Patrick Bet-David, founder of PHP Agency, an insurance marketing organization, and is the host of the popular YouTube channel,ValueTainment. Onward Nation, if you haven’t already subscribed to Patrick’s YouTube channel, I highly recommend it. Patrick is exceptional at delivering impactful education, success principles, and business lessons any business owner can apply immediately in order to move onward to that next level. So I am going to share some examples with you over the next several minutes to illustrate this powerful principle. Why? Because I think it is important to realize that success takes time. That success requires your full attention. That success requires failure, making adjustments, repositioning, trying again, failing again, reintroducing products, and maybe even being on the brink of collapse as was the case with Apple, before you finally “make it”. I want you to rest easy today — and to celebrate the challenges and obstacles that are in your way right now. They are a gift — they are making you stronger — if you let them — they are forcing you to think differently — they are testing your commitment to your vital priorities, vital function, and your wherewithal. Will you push forward — or will you quit, Onward Nation? My hope is that you will always push forward and never quit. Back when I was a sophomore in high school, I decided that I wanted to play football. Now, truth be told, I didn’t know the first thing about football…literally…I didn’t even know the positions on the field. I knew zero plays…nothing. And to make matters worse, I was 6 feet tall and about 150 pounds, slow, lanky, without any skill at all. In fact, I was so bad — and I am honestly not exaggerating at all — I was so bad, Onward Nation, that I actually sat on the bench during practice. As a young kid in high school, I thought my coaches were disrespecting me by not letting me practice. Now that I am older — I can only imagine the coaches meetings — they probably went something like this. “Ahem, okay gentlemen, we need to make some adjustments here in practice…has anyone seen that Woessner kid, yeah, he’s really bad. He has no talent on the field. Let’s let him stay on the team but we need to keep him busy on the sidelines because he is so bad that he will get destroyed even in practice.” Which was likely followed by lots of agreement and laughing. I distinctly remember talking with my dad one night when I felt like quitting because I was frustrating with my lack of opportunity — again — I didn’t realize the coaches were helping me, they weren’t trying to hold me back — they were actually ensuring I could move up just not in football — and my dad told me it would be okay if I quit. And that took me back a little bit. Quit? After the call, I thought long and hard about what he said — and I later decided that it was not okay if I quit. Quitting was not okay — and even if I never played another down on the team — I would not quit. I would attend every practice — every game — and root on the guys who were much better than me. But I would never quit. I wasn’t going to be successful in football but quitting to me felt like I would be given up on a lot more than just 10th grade football. So I finished the season no matter how embarrassed I was to be riding the pine bench. I think about those lessons often because they still fuel me today, Onward Nation, and my hope is that the lessons fuel you, too. Don’t ever give up. Remain committed to your vital priorities — and eventually — you will succeed. There is no overnight success — it takes persistence and tenacity over the long haul. To that point, I encourage you to go back and relisten to my interview with Verne Harnish in episode 205 and listen carefully to how Verne introduces himself to you, Onward Nation. Verne says this is his 34th year of doing just one thing — helpful companies scale up. Verne cited Apple and how the company had slowly moved along with their 25 year timeline — nearly collapsed — until Steve Jobs came back. And just because someone gets paid $50,000 to deliver a speech today — like Gary does — there is all kinds of back story there — and it’s the back story that is so interesting. Let’s take a look at the late Peter Drucker, arguably the godfather of modern day management…Verne Harnish shared with me during our interview that of Peter’s 39 groundbreaking books, only 13 of them were written before Peter’s 65th birthday. #59: How to Create a Killer Sales Page Headline

One of the business guides I return to again and again is the book Great Leads. This book tells you everything you need to understand about communicating with your audience in a way that cultivates the relationship and results in increasing sales. No matter how many times I've read this book, I'm always blown away by the statistic they open with: “80% of emotional impact will be determined by the first 20% of the copy.” Did you know that? Because I sure didn’t! The first few hundred words of your copy are known as “the lead.” And if those first hundred words are the entryway to a sale, your headline is the front door that every client has to walk through, in order to get to your product. Of course, what you really want is for them to be stampeding through! To get this, you need a killer headline for your sales page. Four Essentials of a Killer Headline #1:  The Rule of One Readers don’t want to hear everything you know about a topic. Instead, they are looking for just a single, useful suggestion. Something they can take action on and see results. In advertising firms, they refer to this as the Rule of One--focusing on one powerful emotion within your reader. Too many ideas sends the reader’s mind in too many directions. You can use any number of different stories, predictions, statements or promises, but they all have to support that one Big Idea that your reader will grasp immediately. Here are a few classic examples of headlines that use the Rule of One: “Is the Life of a Child Worth $1 to You?” “When Doctors Feel Rotten, This is What They Do” “How I Improved My Memory in One Evening” When you stick with this Rule of One, it makes the copy stronger AND it makes writing the rest of the sales letter easier. Strange but true fact: people respond to emotion before they respond to reason. So you need to grab your readers' attention by appealing to their current emotions. Once you have their emotional attention, they'll give you their intellectual attention so that you can convince him with all the great reasons to become your client. Here are some examples: “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” This one appeals to the emotion of fear--nobody wants to be helpless in this situation! “Do you make these mistakes in English?” This headline appeals to the emotion of insecurity--that you might be making a mistake and everyone knows it but you. #3: Determine Which Lead to Use Any advertising or marketing offer can be categorized as one of these six major types. The trick is to determine which type of lead is the best setting for your Big Idea. The Offer Lead “I Guarantee That You Will Shoot Your Lowest Score Ever on Your Next Round of Golf!” "Don't Pay One Penny Until This Course Turns Your Mind Into A Mental Magnet”  The Promise Lead “A Hollywood Smile in 3 Days” “Build Your Memory in 4 Short Weeks” “Grow $500 into $4.8 Million” The Problem-Solution Lead “Do You Have a Secret Fear of Losing Your Job?” “Don’t Put a Cold in Your Pocket” “Feel Stronger Fast” The Big Secret Lead “The Strategy That Turns Every $1 Into $50” “The Only Investment Legally Obligated to Pay You 181% Gains” “An easier, more foolproof way to garden — anywhere” The Proclamation Lead “Warning: Your PDR is Obsolete” (I don’t even know what a PDR is, do you? But I definitely don’t want mine to be obsolete!) “Why Most 20th Century Medicine Will Soon Become Extinct” The Story Lead “They Laughed When I Sat Down at the Piano...But When I Started to Play!” “15 Rivers to Cross ... and only 7 bridges Here’s how we were able to bring you … THE GRANADA" “I’m writing to you from our shelter tonight…” All these leads are super fun to play with. If you like getting creative, you’re going to love experimenting with all these. Today I’m answering a question from Vanessa in the USA, who wants to know how to handle it when her man pulls away. In response I share: Why MOST men pull away – So you can feel good about him taking time out, instead of feeling confused or hurt. How to handle it when you feel hurt if he disappears unexpectedly. (physically, or emotionally). What you can do to inspire him to take the time he needs, in a way that works for both of you.
