FLATHEAD BRAVE MENTOR EXECUTIVES KATIE MANNING, TYSON FANCHINI-WHITE TRT: 13:59 MENTORING PROGRAM -
Two very smart women saw a pattern developing in their midwestern city of St. Louis, my hometown actually, after one attended a meet-up group organized by Susan Gobbo one of these smart women, who is Brazilian, and who experienced the loneliness of a trailing spouse, herself when she moved to St. Louis in 2008. Years later, she formed a meetup group for other foreign wives. Annie Schlafly, the other very smart woman, who is active in various community groups, heard about the meetup group through the St. Louis Mosaic Project, a regional initiative within the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership and the World Trade Center St. Louis, formed to attract more immigrants to St. Louis, invigorating the region with rich culture and intellectual stimulus.. Annie convinced Susan that the international spouses would benefit from meeting more St. Louisans, and the two founded the International Mentoring Program also known as IMP in 2017. Over the last seven years, the program has paired over 600 international newcomers with local mentors. They meet one-on-one, in small groups and for larger events such as sports games and other local fare. Beyond fostering human connections, the program aims to solve a real business problem: According to a Harvard Business Review study, a large percentage of expatriate business postings fail. Many executives ask to return home earlier than planned; others underperform on the job or leave the company. Mentors are a gift and they can be very rare; they're rare, because they're intentional - I use the word, intentional, because that is what it takes to be a great mentor and a great mentee - yes, it's a two-way street, a commitment that can take on a journey of its own - meaning there is a structure that has some flexibility and creativity that works for both parties. Mentors can be a surprise or can be set up through a network of connections - what makes it sometimes difficult is for a mentee to find or ask someone to serve as their mentor unless their is a designed program. Now, let's complicate the situation a tad bit, what if you were moving to a foreign country and knew no one, but your spouse or partner who just received an incredible opportunity to earn a living and contribute to the host's country's intellectual community - so your partner automatically has a network - built-in through their new work life, but what about YOU. You might think…well, I will just support my partner, but what if a year's opportunity turns into much longer and you have remained an expatriot without a network of support… how might you feel and what is the risk to your marriage or partnership or even your family if there are children involved? Personal contentment can count for a great deal in determining longevity in a new environment.

Have you ever looked for a mentor or thought about becoming one? This week's show explores the benefits on both sides. Mentorship can help shape careers, foster inclusivity, and make a workplace less lonely by developing stronger connections across teams and experiences. Whether through formal programs or informal connections, mentorship creates opportunities, and nurtures growth on both sides. My guests are: - Sonata Louvigny - Patricia Souza - Inês Crisóstomo - Sylvia Rohde-Liebenau National Mentoring Day on 27 Oct was inaugurated at the Houses of Parliament in London, led by Chelsey Baker. In December 2023 the Official Journal of the EU published the Opinion of the European Committee of the Regions entitled “Mentoring: A Powerful and Meaningful Tool for the Europe of Tomorrow." (links below) During this conversation we discuss how to find a mentor, build a trusting environment for effective listening and communication and setting outcome expectations. Two way Street Mentorship can also be effective for mentors themselves, to develop stronger bonds and ideas within their organisation and learn how to ask good questions of oneself along with the other. Inês Crisóstomo encourages people to reach out to someone you might admire professionally and ask for an ‘information interview' with them for about 15 minutes. “You are not alone” Mentoring can be viewed as a learning conversation: learning about oneself; creating space for reflection and supporting action planning. It also helps to equalise opportunities, to create frameworks that support professional development. Informal networks often serve men more than women for example. With over a decade in Science Management, Inês supports scientists to thrive in an ever-evolving research landscape. She coordinates the Mentoring Program sponsored by the Gender Equality Group at the University of Luxembourg and works as a mentor and coach. Her own background is a Ph.D. in Biology from ITQB-UNL (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier ITQB NOVA, Lisboa), with research conducted at the Rockefeller University in New York, USA. She has worked at iMM (Lisboa, Portugal) and in the Vienna BioCenter (Austria). Inês knows how important mentorship can be in a research environment and is accredited by the MCAA (Marie Curie Alumni Association), EMCC, EMCC Luxembourg (European Mentoring and Coaching Council), and the CARE network (Career Advisors Supporting Researchers in Europe), fostering collaborations and knowledge sharing within global communities. Patricia Souza is the co-founder of WeSTEM+ (Women in Excel STEM) and a Leadership Development and Inclusion Consultant focused on creating more inclusive and equitable business environments. She is also the co-chair the Membership Stream for the NextGen chapter of Lead Network and a board member of the BeLux Chapter. Patricia believes in empowerment through guidance, and a build-up of confidence and leadership through a good mentor. However, she also states that mentorship is a two-way relationship with a ripple effect to the circles of influence for both participants. “It's about building a relationship that can change the trajectory of their life.” Sylvia Rohde-Liebenau is a leadership expert who worked in HR for many years, where she became involved with mentoring. Sylvia created the first ever mentoring programme at the European Investment Bank and later, together with Rita Knott, the Youth Mentoring Programme in Luxembourg. Today she works as an executive coach to leaders on all levels, with a focus on leadership presence, resilience, communication and impact. For organisations, Sylvia believes mentor programmes are fantastic (and cheap) L&D tools that cover several purposes, in particular: 1) fostering a cohesive organisational culture 2) passing organisation specific knowledge to newcomers and younger professionals, 3) creating networks 4) fostering a learning environment Mentors give back AND about learn about themselves. Mentees: “You get as much as you put in (it's not a free lunch)” Keys to successful mentoring include building trust and openness at the start; clear agreements and engagement from both sides; basic coaching skills for mentors. Sonata Louvigny is an EU project and program management leader, coach and mentor. Her starting point in mentoring was experiencing the negative impacts of mismanaged mentoring within her team. Sonata's master's thesis was on managing the mentoring process and to help various organisations develop effective mentoring programs aligned with their goals. She is a member of professional mentoring associations such as IMA and EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council). She worked with EMCC Luxembourg, where her role was to oversee the accreditation process for coaches and mentors. Sonata warns that a mentor could be in a position of authority over the mentee, which is more common in traditional mentoring but not in developmental mentoring, and therefore professional guidelines are really important. Through her work she believes that mentoring is not just a hobby but requires specific competencies and skills. Effective mentors should be aware of the professional standards, continuously develop their capabilities, and, if they wish, seek accreditation to ensure they provide high-quality, impactful mentoring. How to find a mentor My guests suggest: - Identify people that inspire you. - Reach out to them - Join groups - Find peers - Take advantage of organisations that create mentorship programs (workplace, non-profit organisations, educational institutions, professional associations, government initiatives, and community organizations, among others). In this episode of The Pilates Lounge Podcast, host Katie Crane explores the multifaceted topic of the pelvic floor, emphasizing its critical role in Pilates practice. She addresses common misconceptions about pelvic floor strength, discusses the impact of stress on pelvic floor dysfunction, and underscores the importance of ongoing education for Pilates professionals. Katie also shares practical strategies for helping clients relax their pelvic floor using breathing techniques and movement and introduces a new mentoring program for Pilates instructors. Key Takeaways The pelvic floor is a frequent topic in Pilates conversations. Clients often misinterpret their pelvic floor needs based on information from external sources. A solid understanding of anatomy and movement is essential for effective Pilates instruction. Stress can lead to pelvic floor tightening, impacting overall health. Deep breathing exercises can be effective in relaxing pelvic floor muscles. Many clients may struggle with fully evacuating their bladder or bowels due to pelvic floor tension. Pelvic floor dysfunction is closely linked to gut health and general well-being. Pilates instructors should tailor sessions to meet each client's unique needs. Long-term stress can negatively affect reproductive health and function. Continuous learning and professional development are vital for Pilates instructors. Take Advantage of our Special Offers! Sonia C. isn't going to let the rain put a damper on her spirit. Sonia T. has had one of those weeks – she's been feeling the energy squeeze on social media and isn't getting the immediate return she was hoping for. She's trying to stay connected to her spirit instead of letting her barking dog go to stories. Maybe it's just time for her to give it up and move on to better things. This week's theme is: If it's just not working, it's time to try something different. Highlights: Extend compassion to yourself and save yourself from spiritual abuse. [2:25] Just show up, even if that's all you can do. [5:45] Sonia C.'s experience with an angel rewarded her five years later. [7:20] What's the point? You'll know when you pinpoint your why. [10:40] Cruisin' in California resulted in double meltdowns for mother and daughter! [13:00] Sonia T. enjoys creating, and that is enough. [16:53] Stop being critical and start being curious. [20:35] Demanding control shoves the vibe right out of the room. [27:06] Sonia C.'s experience with Oprah didn't affect her after all. [30:00] Sonia T. recalls a rainbows and butterflies moment of joy. [37:18] Tool of the week. [40:44] Question of the week: How can I be sure that I'm taking the course that is true to myself? [49:22] Sometimes the road signs are telling you to keep going, and sometimes you need to see the sign that says detour! When nothing seems to be going your way, the universe just may be offering you an opportunity for redirection. Sonia C. and Sonia T. were cruising toward a California college but ended up in a corn field! Instead of fighting against the detour, they embraced it and ended up having an even better time than they had planned. Stop being critical about what is going on around you and just start being curious. You don't have to be in control at all times. When you can take out the emotion and the control and just show up, you're making room for serendipity and spontaneity. Tool of the Week: If it's just not working, just give it up! In June, the Forum hosted a Mentoring Workshop for men across the country (and beyond) to consider the whys and hows of mentoring young boys into young men into men fully alive. It's always best to start by defining terms. And so, the opening lecture for the workshop weekend featured Dr. Joseph Lanzilotti, theology scholar and upper school teacher at The Heights School, explicating the kind of Christian anthropology that precedes a mentoring relationship. In other words, how are we to understand what man is before we try to help him grow? For our benefit, Dr. Lanzilotti maps out this profound philosophical concept using St. Augustine's simple and most famous line: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” Chapters: 2:07 St. Augustine's “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you” 4:56 What is man? The power industry has long been lamenting its aging workforce. While turnover has been happening for years, there remains a large percentage of power professionals on the verge of retirement. Furthermore, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts faster than average job growth for engineering occupations. That means experienced workers with the skills needed by the power industry are in high demand and can be choosy when looking for new opportunities. They can also demand higher compensation to make a change. Meanwhile, relative youngsters coming out of college and trade schools, while often having the fundamental knowledge to do power jobs, don't usually have the experience needed to add immediate value to an organization. The situation is forcing companies to implement workforce development strategies. Mechanical Dynamics & Analysis (MD&A) is a company that offers a full-service alternative to original equipment manufacturer services, parts, and repairs for steam, gas, and industrial turbines and generators. Like other power industry companies, MD&A has found it challenging to recruit experienced engineers. “When we started out back in the early 80s, we started out as a company who tended to hire engineers who were very experienced. And back around 2009, we started to realize that those people were becoming a little harder to find,” Charles Monestere, general manager for Technical Services with MD&A, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “So, we started hiring a few engineers a year—some years one person, some years two or three people, maybe even a little bit more—and we developed an in-house program where we would bring in generally recent graduates, within a year or two or three out of school, and put them through some classroom training, but then a structured on-the-job training where we would have weekly meetings reviewing the activities on the job sites,” he explained. “And we'd put the young engineers with very experienced project managers and technical directors that are at the sites—the field engineers who have been doing this for many years.” Called the Engineers in Training (EIT) program, the instruction tasked learners with becoming proficient at and gaining knowledge on many different technical aspects of the job. “A good part of the work is on the job sites; however, there is some structured classroom training, which is integrated into it,” Monestere said. In recent years, finding experienced people has become even more difficult, leading MD&A to increase its hiring into the EIT program. “We're actually targeting about 10 people a year now,” said Monestere. “We're just hiring in five more this summer, and then, probably another five or so at the end of the year. So, that's the direction we're heading.” Colin Baker, one of MD&A's newest field engineers, participated in the program and found it very worthwhile. “Working with all these really great and really smart engineers, you get all of their experience firsthand, and you learn what's right and what's wrong,” he said. “Also, with all these classes that you're put through, you use all of that knowledge and you learn where to apply it when you're actually out in the field.” Meanwhile, Baker said the program also offered him an opportunity to network within the industry and in the company. Baker said he now has multiple experts he can contact when he runs into problems. “Especially with MD&A, you can always reach out to anyone for help. Everyone is pretty much readily available for any kind of questions or something of that matter,” he said. “I'm still very new in the industry and I'm not going to know everything. I know people who do know most things, so it's good to get these kinds of resources.”

It was an absolute pleasure to have this open conversation with Anthony about where his journey started as a young boy full of sadness, frustration resentment and despair and the miraculous transformation he has made as a young man. He had to learn some really tough lessons but to his credit, he feels that he had to go through everything that he did to become the person that he is today. Sometimes life has an unexpected way of teaching us lessons and the life of Anthony McDuffie Jr, perhaps took him on a more circuitous and difficult route to finding his true self.At a young age, he experienced the loss of a loved one and was subject to inner city crime and violence. He went looking for support in the wrong places and eventually got mixed up in crime which led to incarceration. Yet what followed, through studying, hard work and spirituality, was redemption, resilience and forgiveness. After 15 years behind bars, he was released a new man. While in prison, I know there were tough years for Anthony, wondering "why me" or all the "what -ifs" or "wrong place, wrong time," scenarios OR maybe "I should have listened to my mother" conversations he had with himself.Today Anthony has written two books, "Grit, Grind & Glory" and "My Life In Poetry." He's written about lessons learned, finding a mentor, igniting the seed of change as well as how to encourage and inspire youth to succeed. He's a motivational speaker and certified mental health First Aider. HIs transformative journey includes graduating form "Give a Beat's"-"On A New Track" Re-entry Mentoring Program in 2021, where he became a performing artist.Shottie, Anthony's mom, wrote to her son regularly while he was incarcerated. While incarcerated, Anthony desperately longed to see his mother, hold his mother and talk to his mother. Where do you think he went directly upon release?Thank you again Anthony. There are many unfortunate kids out there that now will benefit from your experience and your example. When life gets crazy, it is HARD to keep going as a business owner...even when you have an amazing nature-baed business. This episode is an honest share from the heart about my own lack of motivation lately and lessons I've been learning in the midst of the messiness of life and business. Some things I'm learning: -Don't believe the lies you tell yourself so that you can be free to show up for others. -Personal connection with the people you serve can give you meaning when you don't feel motivated. -Our feelings may not reflect (in fact, usually DON'T reflect) reality -Saying NO to really good or even great things is a necessity in entrepreneurship. And at the end I share some practical things happening in my businesses right now and some recent decisions I've made to pivot after a setback. I hope this episode encouraged you if you are feeling like you lack motivation right now! It is normal to have these ebbs and flows of energy in our business ownership and I'm right there with you! xoxo Laura Register for the Nature-Based Business Retreat here. We appreciate your time and effort! Art of Coaching Staff Development: Consistent professional development is a non-negotiable if we want to perform and stay relevant in our field. And as the leader of a staff or department, we do our best to promote an environment of consistent growth and high performance in all areas - both in technical skills and on the interpersonal side of things. However, despite our efforts, organized and routine continuing education often gets pushed down the priority list when compared to all the other responsibilities we have on our plates. That's why we at Art of Coaching have created a virtual staff development program, which is tailored to the needs and goals of your staff and department. This program is NOT just an inspirational, “rah rah,” type of experience. Specific and customized to your mission and values, we provide you and your staff with educational resources and guide you through discussion, tools, and strategies you can use to grow together in the areas of building trusting relationships, becoming better communicators, and strategically approaching hard conversations.
