I have thought for many years that deep breathing through the belly was THE way to breathe. The science doesn't support this advice. Now, granted, breathing into your lower belly is much better than in your chest, Dr. Buteyko discovered that people breathe too often, taking in a larger volume of air than they actually need. What happens when we do that? When we breathe frequently and take in a large volume of air repetitively as most people do, whether they breathe into their chest (not so good) or their bellies (good), our carbon dioxide levels drop too low. When that happens, the oxygen we carry around in our hemoglobin doesn't detach from the molecule to feed our cells. Since reading Patrick McKeown's book The Breathing Cure, I've told several athletes to try closing their mouths as they exercise. Miraculously, they all said it made a big difference!  In fact, one gal I was practicing martial arts with was huffing and puffing while we were playing, and I noticed her mouth open the whole time. I, on the other hand, was breathing calmly through my nose. I suggested that she try closing her mouth the next round, and she did. She said it made a huge difference!  Tune in as we discuss: Why it is harmful to breathe through your mouthOne thing you can do at night to stop the cycle of over-breathingHow you can "test" yourself to see if you are over breathingAnd so much more!  Visit https://buteykoclinic.com/  to learn more!

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Patrick McKeown. World-renowned author and breathing practitioner Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, before completing his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia. This training was accredited by Professor Konstantin Buteyko. From a young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at the age of 26, experiencing immediate relief from his symptoms. By applying the principals of the Buteyko Method, Patrick remains asthma-free since then, a feat that over 20 years of medication had failed to accomplish. In a career spanning 15 years, Patrick has since also become a bestselling author and expert on the topic of optimal breathing for improved health, wellbeing, and fitness. In this episode, Patrick talks about how crowded teeth can be a problem for breathing. Then, we discuss the main issues that can develop with chronic mouth breathers. Patrick dives into exactly how we should be breathing through our noses and the relaxation effect that will take place with proper inhales and exhales. Tune in as Patrick reveals why he highly recommends taping your mouth before bed. Plus, Patrick recommends the best resources to learn more about breathing exercises and guidelines. He started to practice slow breathing and light breathing. Through breathing, he was able to influence the temperature of his fingers. Learn more about Patrick by reading his book Atomic Focus: https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Focus-Resilience-Breathing-Exercises-ebook/dp/B09D9ZL9HL/benazadi-20 [07:15] The Problem With Crowded Teeth and Breathing If the teeth are crowded, your jaw is too small. If your jaw is too small, there's not enough room for the tongue. So, the tongue is more likely to encroach the airway. When your airway is compromised, you may get disordered breathing during sleep. A palate expander is something that can be useful to improve breathing. [16:40] The Problems That Can Develop With Chronic Mouth Breathing Yawning excessively can be a clue to mouth breathing. Whenever Patrick works with a student, he tries to switch them from mouth breathing to nose breathing as much as possible. He also works on functional breathing patterns. Light breathing helps ensure the blood chemistry is normal. You're more likely to breathe light through your nose. By changing our breathing patterns, we can stimulate the vagus nerve. [21:55] Patrick Explains How You Should Breathe Through Your Nose Bring your attention to your breathing. Slow down your inhale, and have a slow, gentle exhalation. When you need to breathe in, take in a gentle inhalation. At the end of the inhalation, bring a feeling of relaxation to the body. When you do this correctly, you will feel air hunger. As you do this for two to three minutes, check the saliva in your mouth. Normally, it increases. When the human body undergoes stress, the mouth goes dry. While on the other hand, when we slow down our breathing, we should have more saliva in the mouth. [38:40] Why Patrick Recommends Mouth Tape Before Sleep Mouth tape can bring you so many benefits. 50% of people wake up with a dry mouth in the morning. Breathing through your mouth at night can wreak havoc on your dental health. Mouth breathing will cause more sleep disruptions. Breathing through the nose will make it so you don't have to wake up as much in the middle of the night. Ben uses Somnifix mouth tape, you can get it here: https://www.somnifix.com/?rfsn=3778298.e05929&utm_source=refersion&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=3778298.e05929 [49:00] Resources To Check Out That Patrick Recommends  Patrick highly recommends reading his book, THE BREATHING CURE: Develop New Habits for a Healthier, Happier, and Longer Life. Today's episode features performance coach and breathing specialist, Leo Ryan.  Leo is the founder of Innate-Strength.com.  Leo has studied from many elite personal training, physical therapy and breathing schools including Dip. Buteyko Method, Wim Hof, Oxygen Advantage Master Instructor, Fascial Stretch Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Pilates.  Leo previously appeared on episode 219 speaking on many elements of breath training for athletic performance including nose vs mouth breathing in training, breath hold time as a readiness indicator, and more. The use of one's breath for training and overall well-being has become more and more on my radar with each passing year.  From my foray into the endurance end of the competitive spectrum (Spartan Racing in 2019), to understanding the role of rib cage expansion in movement biomechanics, to breathing for energy and recovery, to the training practices of the old-school strongmen, in each year of my life, understanding and training the breath becomes more substantial. On today's show, Leo Ryan returns to dig into the role of breath training, and its role in recovery, both within the workout itself, and in day-to-day recovery from training efforts.  We often talk about having an adequate “aerobic base”, but for some reason, the actual core of that aerobic base, which is “breathing”, is rarely considered, and Leo goes into making capacity workouts even more effective through breathing mechanics, physiology and rhythm.  Leo will also cover the role of CO2 and CO2 tolerance in human and athletic function, rhythmic aspects of breathing in athletic performance, and then some dynamics on breathing in the scope of strength training sessions. MYOTAPE will gently restore functional breathing for better sleep, better health, and better quality of life. On this special duo interview episode of Simply Walk The Talk, Josh connects with pulmonaut, Anders Olsson about the importance of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide and all things Conscious Breathing. A Pulmonaut is someone who uses the lost science of nasal breathing to boost their immune system, increase lung capacity, blood circulation, reduce anxiety, and much more. Over a decade ago, Anders headed out on an incredible journey. That's when he decided to become the world's foremost expert in breathing! So how does one get the idea of becoming an expert on breathing? Well, after living with a racing mind his whole life, he has been fortunate enough to come across different tools that have helped him to relax and find his inner calm. The most powerful of those tools have without a doubt been to improve his breathing. Anders founded his own company in 1990, importing computers from Taiwan. Fifteen years later, he sold his company and fulfilled his “dreams”. But during his quest for money, gadgets and “success”, the last years brought about this increasingly nagging feeling that something was missing. On the surface, he appeared successful. But, on the inside, he felt overworked, drained and surprisingly empty. A feeling that “there has to be something more” constantly ate at him. He began researching and experimenting with different breathing techniques and soon developed a concept that literally transformed his body, mind and overall health. The Conscious Breathing Retraining Program evolved out of his personal experience, courses, books and research on relaxation techniques, yoga, qigong, the Buteyko Method, mental training and body awareness, as well as feedback from several thousand students, athletes, skilled doctors, therapists, and many other wise people. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show! — Full Video Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cWq4P8Msl-g — Conscious Breathing Products - BodyStream, The Relaxator, Sleep Tape and much more: https://www.consciousbreathing.com/?ref=joshuajholland

Patrick McKeown from the Buteyko Method to talk about all the benefits of deep breathing for anxiety and why breathing through your nose using the Buteyko Method is so important for your health. Breathing through your nose actually helps to produce nitric oxide in the body and it's amazing because when you breathe through your nose like we're anatomically designed, it increases oxygenation inside our blood and increases circulation. Nose breathing is also great for the teeth. When we mouth breathe all night in bed for example, we dry out our mouth by drooling. When your teeth do not have adequete saliva, there's no ability for the body to fight against bacteria growing on your teeth, hence cavities. If you let those cavities grow you might be influenced to get a root canal further damaging your health in the process. As we know from all the guests in our dental section, each tooth (accordin to Traditional Chinese Medicine aka TCM) reflexes through a complex set of meridian system to specific organs. Those organs also reflex back to that tooth. The dangers of mouth breathing are endless but also the benefits of nose breathing using the Buteyko Method are equally as beneftial for your health and well being. In this show with Patrick McKeown we get into the details and nuances of how breathing (taking in oxygen) impacts our cells, DNA, mitochondria and more. Who knew respiration would be so impactful to our longevity and health? Don't you think we should be taught how to breathe in school? It's so simple but yet so important and yet so overlooked even in the natural health community. I hope you enjoy this show with Patrick McKeown about the Buteyko Method and how breathing properly will help improve your health! Thanks for listening! The east village was still known as Alphabet City and it was here she found her healing and passion for Yoga at the Jivamukti Yoga Center. A deeply spiritual center led by Sharon Gannon and David Life who were intimidating, wild and incredibly uncompromising in their conviction that Yoga was a path to Self-Realization. She moved to Los Angeles in 2001 where she continued her practice and trained with some of the best teachers in the world including an apprenticeship with Senior Iyengar teacher Lisa Walford. EPISODE 59: SLEEPING HEALTH FROM NASAL BREATHING Flourishing Friday (FF)-Welcome to Flourishing Fridays (FF), where every Friday we bring you a Positive Psychology-based life hack that will help you to flourish.  In these episodes we look at real life application of Positive Psychology, while giving you tips and strategies to put Positive Psychology into use in all areas of your life.  Healthier while you sleep!! Improve energy, vitality, mood and clear headed.  Tap your mouth shut when your are sleeping! Sounds crazy, right? Science has shown that nostril breathing is healthier. Mouth breathing is meant to be a back up system. Mouth breathing is associated with stress. Nasal breathing (as opposed to mouth breathing) increases circulating blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, slows the breathing rate and improves overall lung volumes. The nose also adds moisture and warmth to inhaled air for smoother entry to the lungs. Nasal breathing, as opposed to mouth breathing, has another important advantage, especially for effective and efficient exercise: It can allow for more oxygen to get to active tissues.  Listen while Emiliya backs up this claim with scientific research. She teaches us about  the Buteyko Method. The Buteyko method emphasizes the importance of nasal breathing, which protects the airways by humidifying, warming, and cleaning the air entering the lungs. Expected benefits include easier breathing, deeper sleep, more energy, reduced asthma and nasal congestion along with increased feeling of calm.
