As the pandemic recedes, millions of workers have decided to rethink their jobs and how they are living their lives. On today's episode of Talk Talent to Me, we get together with recruitment expert Sarah Baker Andrus to discuss this dramatic trend, why now is an excellent time to be looking for a new job, and how to do the internal work necessary to find and identify a job that you'll love. In our conversation with Sarah, we hear about her history in recruitment and how she came into the career almost by accident when she discovered that it was a great fit for her personality and interests. You'll hear Sarah break down some of the biggest mistakes people make when they first start looking for a job and explain why job boards are never the best place to start your search. Instead, you should be researching the type of companies you want to work for and intentionally reach out to them. Sarah offers some useful strategies for determining the type of position you'll thrive in, like reflecting on high points in your career to identify your most valuable skills and asking yourself “Do I want to work here?” instead of “Will they hire me?” We spend some time reflecting on how worker demands and expectations are shifting in America and examine the many legitimate reasons workers have for leaving their jobs. We had a fantastic time talking with Sarah, and we're sure you'll find the conversation as informative and useful as we did. For all this and much more, tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: Introducing today's guest, Sarah Baker Andrus. How Sarah discovered a fascinating career in recruitment almost by accident. How reflecting on high points in your career can help you identify your most valuable skills. Why it's equally important to identify the traits that your co-workers rely on you for. How to turn those traits you've identified into a job search. Why you should change the question from “Will they hire me?” to "Do I want to work here?” Why you should identify employers and companies that you want to work with. How men and women approach job searches differently on average. Why Sarah does not promote starting your job search by looking at job boards. How to use intentional networking in your job search. Sarah shares her feelings on accepting a job from an organization that has reached out to you on LinkedIn. Why you should be intentional about the process of leaving your job and finding a new position. The type of questions you need to ask yourself to accurately evaluate your current job versus a job prospect. Why Google is a useful tool for finding organizations that hire people with your particular skill sets. The great resignation that has been happening in America and the many legitimate reasons people gave for leaving their jobs. Why now is a great time to be looking for a new job. The risks of leaving a job versus the risks of staying at a job that isn't working for you for too long. Tweetables: “I've spent the bulk of my career, so more than 20 years, as a recruiter myself, leading recruitment teams, thinking about recruitment marketing and recruitment strategy, and I have really spent my whole career immersed in everybody else's career.” — @avarahcareers [0:01:38] “I was very geeky and intentional about documenting what was working for me at that stage. I thought it was interesting to sort of be the guinea pig in my own adventure.” — @avarahcareers [0:04:17] “One thing that I think I knew instinctively, and I'm sure you'd agree, is that when we think about the high point moments in our careers, there were certain skills, abilities, talents, that we brought to those achievements. We all want more of that.” — @avarahcareers [0:04:32] “The vast majority of jobs never even get on to the boards and it's far more effective to target your list of employers and then go on their careers page and monitor that and create your own job board, whether you use an Excel spreadsheet or some notes.” — @avarahcareers [0:10:57] “So many great places that are starting from a different premise that has a new way of doing things and that's what I find really exciting. If you're at a place that isn't keeping up, then you become identified with that place.” — @avarahcareers [0:33:12] “We need to give equal consideration to the risk of staying and what that can do to your career over the long haul.” — @avarahcareers [0:33:43] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Sarah Andrus on LinkedIn Sarah Andrus on Twitter Sarah Andrus on Facebook Avrah Careers Hired Sign Up to Hired Talk Talent to Me

What's it like to surf one of the scariest big waves on earth, and be the first woman to do it? When I think of women's big wave surfing, I immediately think of Sarah Gerhardt-Northern California's courageous Maverick's surfer. When I was only a teenager, learning to surfer myself, Sarah was pushing the limit for women's surfing at one of the scariest, coldest, most daunting waves on earth. And not only has she dominated one of the biggest, most difficult waves to surf in the world, she is also a mama of two, and professor of Chemistry. This mama is both accomplished, on a physical and intellectual level, and uses her focus and analytical brain, to master all that she sets her sights on. What I find the most interesting about Sarah, is that she studied Mavericks at length before actually dropping in on a wave herself. It's fascinating to hear to progression of going from watching to actually partaking in one of the scariest things a human can do. Her husband, Mikey, one of the most accomplished male big wave surfers, is one of her greatest inspirations and she admits he's her favorite surfer to watch out at Mavericks. In 1998, she paddled out to watch from the channel, analyzing and watching every wave, and eventually paddled into a few herself. She admits that it is terrifying, but that knowing your surroundings, having good equipment and clocking in the hours studying the wave has helped to keep her feeling safer in this treacherous environment. Sarah is not someone who had it easy growing up, she has experienced homelessness and poverty, and appreciates all that she has and has accomplished. Today we are going to talk about what she learned from her tough upbringing and how thats made her who she is today, how that has informed her parenting, how big wave surfing affected her parenting and what its like to face our biggest fears. Take Aways: Sarah's life before surfing Mavericks, and what inspired her to surf the wave in the first place Homelessness and struggle in Sarah's childhood and how it led to who she is today How Sarah homed in on Maverick's and began training seriously to surf the wave How Sarah and her friends trained with heavy rocks and big wave gear to get into shape for giant wave surfing Sarah's experience watching this terrifying wave from the channel, and analyzing every little detail of the wave and conditions. Sarah's first paddle out at Mavericks and how she got slapped around, scared and discouraged. The next time she paddled out, she felt more confident, and how her mindset shifted. How our mindset can get us to do things we never could've imagined in this life. Channeling intensity into courageous pursuits When Sarah met her husband Mickey and how he pushed her to appreciate this wave even more. Sarah's take on new motherhood versus now, and the challenges that accompany each stage. Why Sarah opted out of big wave surfing last year during the COVID pandemic.

As the leader of corporate development for Oiselle, Sarah — or "Lesko," as most call her — is beloved by her colleagues, by Oiselle's elite athletes, and by the hundreds of members of the Volée team. So what is about Lesko that makes people so drawn to her? After hearing about Oiselle from countless women on this show — Lauren Fleshman, Sally Bergesen, Alison Mariella Désir, Rebecca Mehra, Kara Goucher, Courtney Carter — it's time to hear from Lesko herself! On this episode, Sarah talks about growing up on a commune, going to (and running for) Yale, and becoming a doctor. She talks about the health issue that forced her to take an 18-year break from running, and explains what drew her back in and got her on the run again. She talks about having kids (she's a mom to three boys) while in her medical residency, and about life as a mom and family medicine doctor. And she talks about her decision to leave the medical industry in 2015 to work for Oiselle. Today, Sarah manages Oiselle's philanthropic efforts, its Bras For Girls program, and the elite team. In this conversation, she reflects on helping grow the brand, including the initiatives she's proudest of, and the missteps along the way. Plus, she talks about why, at 52, she's proud to be "faster as a master." SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones. Mark interviews Actor, producer, audiobook narrator, and singer Sarah Beth Goer. Prior to the interview Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, and a few words about this episode's sponsor... You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. During their conversation, Mark and Sarah talk about: The fact that this is Sarah's first appearance as a podcast guest Working with Erin Wright on releasing her romance novels in audiobook How and when Sarah got started in audiobook narration The reality of trying to be an actor in LA - including the difficulty of even getting an audition Sarah's determination to get at least 200 rejections before giving up on this pursuit The importance of understanding your goal of having your books in audio Other suggestions to authors on strategies for determining whether or not its worth investing on audiobooks What Sarah wants every author to know about licensing their audio rights to a publisher The original of where Sarah got the "bug" for acting Determining that she really had to do acting for her soul Coming to terms with the doors that are open for you and the doors that are closed for you, and walking through the doors that are open instead of banging your head on the doors that are closed How audiobooks are an actor's medium - where an actor can't be limited or typecast by how they look, for example The comparison of a one-hander, a play performed by a single actor with being a single narrator of an audiobook Why Sarah highly recommends the audiobook for Charlotte's Web The converted and sound-proofed/sound-dampened closet that Sarah records in within her home How Mark met Sarah while looking for narrators for the audiobook for his Obsessions anthology The way Sarah gets new clients - Different genres that Sarah likes to work on as an audiobook narrator and what she looks for in a collaborative writing partner The deeply satisfying experience of creating the feature film THREE ROADS The resonance of a specific scene in the film that was created in an ad hoc fashion of collaboration between the actors ad libbing with suggestions from the director Sarah's penchant for ad lib film creation, but why they didn't use that for THREE ROADS (other than a few short scenes) Behind the scenes of the "little details" put into a feature film, such as the "scene within a scene" of a fictional movie two of the characters are watching The mind-boggling realization that every single thing seen on a television show or movie was painstakingly created, designed, or placed by someone responsible for that The challenging reality of the fact that the cost to just distribute this film and would most likely far outweigh the funds that would be earned off of it The cross-training of working on multiple collaborative and creative projects And more After the interview Mark shares a reflection about Sarah's conviction to stick it out until she tried 200 times, as well as the need for disruption in the film industry. Sarah Caltieri is today's guest joining on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots business coaching podcast show. She is a lady who I'll be honest I am a huge fan of her work, in fact such a fan that I had to invite her to appear on the show for a second time. The first time she appeared we discovered that she is a singer, musician, songwriter, actress and has one the bubbliest characters it has been delight to come into contact with. Now if you think that this is a story of a lady with talent and the world supporting her to achieve her aims then think again. This is a story of a talent shining brighter due to the knocks and obstacles she has been required to overcome. Whilst pursuing her recording and acting career, Sarah Caltieri lost most of her vision at age 23, through type 1 Diabetes, as a result of a common diabetic eating disorder (EDMT1) from her late teens. How The Dots Joined Up For Sarah After going through laser treatment and many operations and rehabilitating herself after having lost everything (job, driving licence, independence), unstoppable and unperturbed by obstacles and negative attitudes, she continued pursuing her career. The experience simply made her more determined to follow her own path and become a success, and i have no doubt that her future is a very bright one indeed. And then when everything was going great an accident with a supermarket trolley, knocked her whole business off track, and left her with a career with one wobbly wheel that wouldn't go where she pushed it. So being a creative person, does she find the business side of everything a complete drag, or something she enjoys? And what does she do to stay positive when the world is saying "Ok, heres another little smack in the mouth for you to enjoy" Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Sarah Caltieri Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Sarah Caltieri such as: We disucss how the world has had to change due to Covid-19, and the steps that she has taken to strengthen her business. Sarah talks openly about the moment when she decided that she needed help in her business and how she found the perfect employee. and lastly…. Why Sarah always looks to push the boundaries of her comfort zone to ensure that she is growing everyday.
With 15 years of branding and design experience, Sarah Masci is a leader in the online industry for clients looking for high-quality, aesthetic digital design. As the founder of Book Me For A Day™, her signature one-day intensive program, she thrives on compressing professional branding, web and digital design into one day, versus weeks or months. When she's not doing intensives for her own clients, Sarah teaches fellow designers how to ditch the feast or famine cycle and create more income and freedom with a one-day intensive business model, following her exact blueprint. Sarah's down-to-earth personality and distinctive way of simplifying even the most complex problems have earned her the trust and respect of hundreds of clients and students over the years. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Sarah helped me when I switched my membership site to MemberVault how we were both in Krista Miller's Simply Profitable Designer Summit in 2020 When Sarah started 15 years ago she wasn't doing design, she was doing more blogging and had an online boutique for children's products Sarah had a successful Etsy business, doing printables and custom iPhone cases but started dipping her toes into freelancing in 2012/13 where she then let go of her business and started in branding While branding, Sarah got into web design around 2014 which is what she does today Sarah shares her Book Me for a Day offer which is a one day intensive for her design clients When Sarah was doing traditional design projects she had heard people talking about designing in a day but didn't give it much thought because she never thought she could do it Sarah tells the story of how she helped an interior designer with a simple website in a day, which was the first time Sarah proved to herself she could do work in a day but didn't do anything about it for 2 or 3 months Sarah says the idea to do a day rate really came to her while doing a punch list for a client and telling them she could get it all done in a day Slowly, Sarah started offering it to other people and soon it was all she was doing, which caused her to give up all the traditional client work she had been doing Why Sarah only books a few intensives while her school aged kids are home for the summer How Sarah makes sure there are no distractions, including kids when she starts her intensive at 8:30am and how she works until around 4:00pm Sarah explains that it's has taken a lot of testing to figure out how much work she can get done in a day and makes sure not to promise a client more than what she believes she can get done When people book a day with Sarah, she explains that they have to understand that they're not going to get an elaborate design logo or website and explains what she can get done in a day Sarah explains that people can book multiple days with her and shares a story of a client who booked three days and how she tackled the tasks that client needed Sarah uses Divi Theme and WordPress to develop and design so she doesn't have to outsource development Sarah shares that she will use SquareSpace, but feels limited on how creative she can be with the design because she does custom designs for all her day rate clients and doesn't use templates When working on a day rate project, Sarah sets it up for them to message throughout the day and lets them know what she'll be working on at the start of the day Sarah explains that clients need to be available all day during an intensive because she relies on their feedback and is sending them screenshots and concepts throughout the day She guarantees her time for the entire day, not necessarily the outcome and explains if the design is going in the wrong direction she'll get on a call with them How most people find sarah through word of mouth, social media or through referrals and how on her website they can send her a message through a chat feature, which has cut down the amount of discovery calls she has to do After a discovery call, Sarah explains that everything is automated so she doesn't have to do anything until their kick-off call a few days before the intensive When kick-off calls happen in relation to the intensive and how it gives clients enough time to finish any pre-work Sarah has asked for and ensures the information is fresh in her head Why Sarah put the chat box on her website for her clients' convenience and how it works with messaging and notifications Sarah shares that she is in a Facebook group with other designers where they share what they are working on and how she told them about her day rate offer How some other people in her group were interested so she created a 30 minute walk through of her process and received great feedback from them After Sarah shared her video with them she thought she could teach other people how to do a day rate offer since her process is so detailed Sarah shares that she always wanted to create a course but never had time due to always working with clients on long and draining projects When Sarah started doing day rates, she had more time to create a course because she was only working 1 - 2 days a week Sarah explains that she sells her course concept before she makes it by having buyers who want the course and then building it one week at a time through the live course Sarah shares a story of how she opened a waitlist to see interest and then opened up the course and how she designed it to cater the people taking it How Sarah shares her waitlist on her personal page, Facebook group pages and takes advantage of promo days within Facebook groups Sarah can't say enough good things about the day rate model and how it can give you time to build courses or work on other projects and how even testing it with one client might do you wonders Connect with Sarah on her website and check out her free training for day rates Links mentioned: Connect with Sarah on her Website Sarah's Free Training on Day Rates Like what you heard? Welcome to Episode 064, with Sarah Ford Founder of Ranch Road Boots About Sarah Ford: Sarah Ford learned the meaning of hard work when her father hired her to be the janitor for his office at just 10 years old! She didn't bristle at the work - instead, she expanded the business and ran a janitorial company, cleaning the bathrooms & offices for most of the tenants in the building until she was 17. Instilled with fortitude and commitment to work at such a young age, Sarah has never taken the easy path in life. A Marine Corps Veteran, she's served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. She then went on to Harvard Business School. She says she learned more on the battlefield than at HBS. She founded Ranch Road Boots in 2012 with $60K she had saved from her previous jobs. Her boots were inspired by her grandfather, "Daddy Tom," of San Angelo, TX. Her mission is to create leather goods with style & quality that can last forever. She also gives back to the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund with every pair sold. She waited until after becoming an entrepreneur to have her two daughters - she says if she could do it all over again, she would have had her children at a much younger age! She explained it to me like this: “Your life and career don’t get less complicated with time, and you can’t put it off until you retire when things slow down!” She's incredibly unique and offers an amazing perspective about various aspects of life, business and entrepreneurship. Here is what we discussed on this episode: How Sarah began her entrepreneurial journey (at a very young age) Why Sarah chose to go to Harvard Business School, after serving two military tours in the Marines What experiences from her youth inspired her to create a brand focused on quality The reason Sarah and Ranch Road Boots donate to the Injured Marines Sempre Fi Fund And so much more! To be clear. was not directly, I think like most entrepreneur, you kind of have to live off. Okay. Mmm. So I was that, that sort of provided the loss of income from quitting my day job, that sort of provided day to day living expenses and ranch road. Inventory, um, which was a nice way to learn about . Uh, today we look like a very, very different company. We have the same name, very different. How funny. Yeah. Is what I originally started. Sarah became a military widow and solo mom of four young children in 2014 when an aviation accident claimed her husband's life. Sarah Tuneberg thinks it’s incredibly unproductive to argue about whether a particular flood or drought was caused by climate change. The fact is, catastrophic events are happening more and more frequently, and we have to take action to mitigate the risks. So, how can we use the data available to us to promote this kind of disaster resilience? Sarah is the Cofounder and CEO of Geospiza, a software company that helps corporations visualize, understand and take action around climate risks. Sarah has 10-plus years of experience in emergency management and public health, and she is committed to developing data-driven, evidence-based solutions to reduce risk and enhance resilience, especially for the most vulnerable. Sarah earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Georgia and her Master’s in Public Health from Tulane. Today, Sarah joins Ross and Christophe to share the Geospiza origin story and discuss what inspired their pivot from serving state and local governments to large, multinational corporations. She offers an example of how a client is using Geospiza software to make strategic business decisions and describes how climate risk is changing the insurance industry as well as contract law. One of the benefits of running a cash practice is the flexibility you have in running your own business: you decide how many patients you treat, the hours you work, and the price you charge. But what if you want more? Sarah Duvall is a physical therapist who found herself frustrated at the lack of accurate information available when she was trying to alleviate her own pelvic pain. After selling her second cash practice, she focused her energy on educating as many people as possible, and now she's helping millions with her courses and membership sites. Today, she joins Aaron to chat about the resources she's created for patients and PTs alike. She shares how she started -- and sold -- two cash-based practices before starting her online business, and how she leveraged email marketing before it was trendy. Sarah says one of the secrets to her success is being opinionated, so you'll hear exactly why she thinks it's so important to reach beyond the doors of a clinic to heal the masses. If you're ready to grow your reach and make your knowledge available, don't miss the advice she drops in this episode. “The more opinionated I am about something, the more I tend to find my tribe.” -Sarah Duvall What do you want to hear from the CashPT Lunch Hour? Sarah Ockwell-Smith Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a well known parenting expert and a highly regarded popular parenting author who specialises in the psychology and science of parenting, ‘gentle parenting’ and attachment theory. Born in Bedfordshire, England in 1976, Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a mother of four school aged children, three boys and one girl. Sarah lives with her family, cats and numerous ducks and chickens in a 350 year old cottage in rural Essex. After graduating with an honors degree in Psychology, specialising in child development, she embarked on a five year career in Pharmaceutical Research and Development, working with clinical trial data, until she became pregnant with her first child in 2001. After the birth of her firstborn Sarah retrained as an Antenatal Teacher, Hypnotherapist/Psychotherapist, Developmental Infant Massage Instructor and Birth and Postnatal Doula. Sarah now works as a parenting author, writer and coach, with a particular interest in child sleep. Many refer to Sarah as an Attachment Parenting expert, however Sarah herself does not like this term as she feels it may ostracize many parents from learning about more gentle parenting techniques. She prefers instead to promote ‘Gentle Parenting’, which she feels is more appealing to the mainstream with less perceived restrictions and rules. Sarah is also the co-founder of Gentle Parenting. Episode highlights How Sarah balances work with family life. Sarah's new book The Second Baby Book The limited information currently out there from birth until 3 years old How we should replace the word “jealous” with grieving in relation to elder children’s experience of a new baby arriving. Lightbulb Moment: Business Breakthroughs and Personal Discoveries with Becky Mollenkamp
Sarah Hartley spent the entirety of her first pregnancy sick. A debilitating lack of focus, constant trips to the bathroom, multiple hospital visits for testing, a couple of falls...it just seemed to go on and on. She did not feel healthy, or beautiful, or glowing. At all. She needed support but feared she’d be judged a terrible mother if she admitted to hating pregnancy. So she started writing about it on her personal blog. Readers soon began thanking Sarah for putting words to what they were feeling, too. She realized there was something missing in the media, and Holl & Lane Magazine was born. More in this episode… How writing helped Sarah voice her fears and concerns far better than talking Why she decided not to pursue therapy or support groups The question she asked herself that expanded the reach of Holl & Lane beyond pregnancy What took someone from a bachelor’s in Fashion, to a master’s in Business, to starting a magazine Why Sarah didn’t want to write a book How breaking a task down into the smallest possible steps made starting a magazine possible The biggest thing Sarah has learned about people The two most important factors to help you decide whether you should pursue a goal or project How to start dealing with those things in your life you feel like you can’t talk about Sarah Hartley is the creator and editor in chief of Holl & Lane Magazine, a magazine dedicated to showcasing real life from real women. Searching for a magazine that featured honest life in a beautiful way, that would give women a voice and a platform, Sarah set out to create that magazine. She publishes stories on infertility, miscarriage, mental health, body image, self-care, love and loss, and so much more. She wants to show women that they are not alone. She is also a wife to Brandon, a mom to Henry and Harrison, and lives near Pittsburgh, PA. In her (minimal) spare time, she loves to read, have dance parties with her son, and enjoy a beer with her husband at the end of a long week. "Our baseline isn't happiness, our baseline is contentment.. We have to actively seek happiness." ~Sarah Buino Connection is the only way through all of this... What if we could stop talking to ourselves like a jerk? What if we could give up shame completely? What if happiness was only a perspective shift away? In this episode, I'm talking with licensed clinical social worker, certified addictions counselor and Certified Daring WayTM (that's Brene Brown's program!) facilitator, Sarah Buino of Head/Heart Therapy all about: Sarah's struggle with impostor syndrome & shame How did Sarah get into her work, specifically with addiction counseling Why Sarah calls herself a “joy pusher” and “empathy snob” How does Sarah keep herself moving forward Happiness vs. contentment How to shift perspective Using music as therapy How to stop talking to yourself as though you're an a*@hole! What Sarah is excited about! CONNECTION Best advice for mental health from Sarah “Everybody's crazy, everyone. Including me. And anybody who says they're not crazy- run. Because they're the craziest of them all.” ~Sarah Buino Resources & Links As far as holiday self-care for mental health and shame here are a couple of things from Sarah: Take breaks. Lots of time with family can be intense, so make sure there's down time. Pick your battles. There's still likely to be discord in politically diverse families and while we all must remain diligent in our social justice quests, conservative Uncle Joe probably won't change his mind because of that one fact you share. People don't respond to facts anyway...they respond to feelings. Be mindful. Family can push our buttons more fiercely and quickly than anyone else and shame is often one of the strong emotions that gets kicked up by our nearest and dearest. Shame wants us to either fight, flee or people-please, so when you feel those urges coming on, take a time out! Reach out. When you do experience shame, the best thing to do is connect with someone who can understand. Sarah Adler really makes healthy eating seem really simple. Which is really good. Because her business is called “Simply Real Health.” Sarah’s a real food lover to the core, and she’s really passionate about helping others love and eat real food with ease. She’s a rockstar nutrition coach, author of a beautiful cookbook (which I really did end up buying after this interview!) and just a really lovely, inspiring, real human being. I’m really happy I got to sit down with a person whose every Instagram post makes me smile (and crave something plant-y) (and kind of want to up and move to Seattle). I’m also really proud of myself for achieving my goal of using a form of the word “real” in every sentence of this introduction. Get pumped to hear: Why Sarah loves living in the land of grey. In this week's edition, I've got Sarah K. Peck on the microphone with me! Sarah is an author, startup advisor and yoga instructor based in New York City. She's the founder and executive director of Startup Pregnant, and at this point in her career she's written around 700 essays.(!) Guys, I truly love and adore every single episode of this show that I've had the privilege to produce. Maybe it's the exact place I'm at in my own life right now as mama to a one year old, but I am really in love with this conversation.I hope it inspires you, challenges you and lifts you up all at the same time, because that's exactly what happened to me. A few big points we dive into: How to find and understand your core identity -- aka, who you really are, in just a handful of wordsThe time Sarah broke her foot in college, and the huge lesson that applies to business Why a "just this once" mentality will screw us up, and leads us to a path of excuses The two habit muscles we are always strengthening -- and which one you definitely want to be focusing on Why "waste" and "rest" are not the same -- and how rest is actually an investment in our careersHow to stop feeling guilty about doing things that feel good to us Why Sarah will take her shirt off and shake her boobies around (wait... what?)Some of my very favorite quotes from this episode: “The true test of perserverance and resilience, the people who make it through their 20 mile march are the ones who look at that moment when they COULD make an excuse and they say I’m choosing to do it anyways” “You’re either strengthening the muscle that makes excuses, or you’re strengthening the muscle that does it anyways” “The person who wins, the person who makes it happen isn’t the person who has some magical better circumstances than you” Then, in the Clarity episode, we're talking about a precise process for way better decision making in our businesses & our lives. Can't wait for you to hear this! SHOW NOTES:Sarah's websiteStartup Pregnant Sarah on InstagramSteph on Instagram

Financial Karma | Money Management | Mindfulness | Mindset | Holistic Financial Advice |
Here’s a recap of my first season of Financial Karma Podcast. Here are highlights of what I learned from launching my podcast this summer. Money is involved in everything we do. We should be prepared to make informed decisions and we can change ourselves with awareness, intention, and accountability. Highlights Episode 0: I talk about how I started and why I’m a financial karma coach. I was interviewed by Lisa Vogt. Episode 1: Splash into Summer, with Nick Snapp. Nick discussed how he got into podcasting, what got him out of the corporate world, how he got into productivity, set routines, and bring up productivity to people. Episode 2: A Delicious Summer with Alexandra Jamieson. She discusses how to do the body scan, listening to your body’s messages. What it means to observe and listen to every part of your body. She discusses the activities best for summer. Episode 3: Women with Wanderlust with Melissa Jones. Melissa helps people to add polish to their personal and business branding with her design. She lives for travel, new challenges, and adventures and recommends traveling to everyone who can afford it. Episode 4: Summer Tips for Mannafest Living with Sarah Mastriani-Levi. She discusses naturopathic medicine and holistic bodywork. She has had extensive clinical practice and is a certified practitioner in the following fields: advanced reflexology, shiatsu, Swedish massage, manual lymph drainage, iridology, aromatherapy and herbology. She also discusses stuff such as: How we create a plastic life, It’s not what happens to you, but how you handle what happens to you, How to find your “allowable rebellions”, The biggest factor that contributes to Sarah’s success as a coach, Why fear has never stopped or defined Sarah, Why you need to be curious, Different challenges with the lifestyle choices we make, How she intentionally makes time to connect with her children, Why being outside should be a priority in your life, How to make positive changes in your life to get what you need, Why dieting is something you should avoid, and Why Sarah loves her work and how she helps people. Episode 5. Back to School (and more) with Bruce Langford. Mindfulness needs to go with every student’s return to school. Does mindfulness apply to your finances? YES! Most of our money decisions—good or bad—are affected by our subconscious mind. Through his work as a mindfulness coach, Bruce helps his clients with the many problems of life with gentleness, candor, and respect. His passion is to help people become more calm, focused, and happy. Episode 6. The Girls of Summer with Amy Lopez. Lying is wrong and can lead to all sorts of problems. There are so many negative character traits that we unknowingly cultivate when we choose to be untruthful. So, be the best YOU that you can be, and tell the truth. Amy Lopez, works with 3rd-8th grade girls, helping build confidence in the next generation of women. Episode 7: Change of Seasons and Meditation with Joe Somodi. Joe is a professional yoga teacher and certified life coach who helps people incorporate a daily practice of meditation into their lives. He talks about attaching to the good and detaching from the bad. Episode 8: End of Summer Wrap-Up with Deb Williams. In this podcast, I recommend Camp Good Life Project to connect with people to enhance your business and your life. Having these types of connections allows you to have support and input from others in your business. Knowing you have connections that have your back, it is such a relief. Having connected relationships is a wealth all its own. Focusing on this aspect of wealth first will allow you to manifest other types of wealth. There is more to wealth than the almighty dollar. Running your business from a spirited place will allow you to grow in innumerable ways. Episode 9: Moving on to the Fall and Deb Williams Coaching Practice. The complexity of the brain, our neurons, and the coping strategies that we turn to is discussed in this episode. In addition, why I changed my point of view and the benefits it has brought me, Better overall health, How I approach decision-making (it starts with a deep breath!), You can’t control what other people do; you can only control what YOU do., Gratitude---why it’s amazing Connection with people, How I blended the work I love Group and one-on-one work Giving people a safe place, How I help you gain insights, and The 8 Money Personalities: Which ones describe you best? Episode 10: Winging It, Owning It and Coming Out Ahead. How to merge your finances with your psyche is discussed here. I’ve got my CPA and my Tax clients too, so there’s a lot going on. I’m a bit overwhelmed at the moment and you can see why! Karma Tip: The word is conviction. It’s being sure what you say and believe is true, and that can even be true to you. My conviction is to work on my self-care and reducing my stress level. Having an open mind causes people to hear each other out, and it can actually cause you to change your convictions. Thinking this way can bring about a more peaceful world.
The habits of successful people are something almost everyone is interested in – it doesn t matter if you re a creative, a stay at home mom, or a CEO. If there were a switch we could throw that would make us more creative most of us would do it. What is it that makes those who are ultra successful stand apart from the rest of the crowd.? Dane s guest today, Sarah Green Carmichael is a person who s taken a deep dive into the subject over the years. What she s observed is not commonplace knowledge – which is exactly what we want to uncover on this podcast, so we truly appreciate Sarah being so generous with her insights. If you take the time to listen to this conversation you ll hear the heart of a woman who cares not just about success, but about achieving it in ways that are healthier for you as an individual. Sometimes working smarter is not what you think. As Dane asked Sarah Green Carmichael about what she s learned in the realm of the habits of successful people she was quick to point out that the idea of working smarter rather than harder is not always the issue. We tend to think that the advent of technology is what enables us to make that distinction but in reality, technology often becomes just as much or more of a distraction to quality work as anything we ve struggled with before. Sarah points out that before we ask if we re working smarter we need to understand the way the human brain is wired to work and the limitations that wiring brings. Her suggestion is that we optimize our capacity for what it is rather than push it to be more than is possible and that as a result, smarter work will happen. It s a hard concept to explain in a paragraph so make sure you listen to what Sarah has to share on this episode. Why the path to gender equality is not so clear cut. Based on writing Sarah Green Carmichael has done for the Harvard Business Review, Dan asked her about her current thoughts when it comes to gender equality in the workplace and in the business world in general. Her perception is that it s not so much an issue of a glass ceiling anymore, but rather like a glass obstacle course. Women press forward with dedication and professionalism but run into obstacles that pop up along the way – and it s not always easy to know if those barriers are because of sexism or have more to do with people in the process who are simply jerks who are hard to work with. But she s got some great advice for women about how to navigate that obstacle course, so be sure you take some time to listen. Sarah s a generous woman who wants to help you succeed – no matter if you re a man or a woman. Personal development needs to take more into account besides your speciality. Did you ever consider that in order to stoke your creative fire you need things that are outside your discipline or area of expertise? Sarah Green Carmichael suggests that we need to fill our personal development plan with those other thing that seem unrelated but that serve to broaden our perspective about life and the world we live in. It gives us a wide angle view of everything when we do – including our particular area of specialization. You can hear more great insights like this on this episode of Converge. Science with Sarah (26:45)The biggest myth when it comes to habits is that it take 21 days to make or break them Habit formation is a huge field of research in the science community The length of time that it takes to form a habit (defined as performing a task without thinking about it) varies from person to person and varies based on what the task is The average habit formation time frame ranges from 18 days to 254 days (8 months), with the average peek hitting at the 2 month mark There are a lot of 21 day and 30 day challenges out there, and that amount of time isn't actually enough to make lasting habits by the end of that challenge, which is why people early into paleo find themselves on and off challenges a lot Step one in being successful to form a new habit, is to acknowledge that it is going to take commitment beyond 21 or 30 days It is also important for habits to be action centered The protocol to making a habit, as found through research:Decide what the goal is - what is the habit you want to form Chose what the action is that will progress you towards your goal, and is something that you can do on a daily or routine basis that this habit would be performed Plan when and where you will do that action Every time you encounter that time and that place, do that action Understand that it is going to get easier with time - keep at it and you will eventually reach your goal Thinking of health goals in terms of habits because habits are conducive to health and they won't be something you stop - this is a more lifelong approach to health journeys Reframing your mind and the power this can play when creating lifelong habits How Stacy has empowered herself when faced with gluten to simply tell herself she doesn't want that and to feel accountable, responsible, and good about the choices she is making, as opposed to making emotional ones As a reminder as we are entering the holiday season, if you have eaten something that you didn't intentionally set out to make the choice to do, remember that there is no emotion in food - it is neither good nor bad, move forward from the choice that was made and avoid creating a habit around food shame What do you want? What makes you feel good? What gets you to a good place with health? And then set about creating habits based on the answers to these questions Learning to identify where your lines are, making a choice, and being ok with your choices Those who decide to paleo YOLO on holidays, especially when you do not have certain food allergies - and there is no shame that needs to be associated with the choices you make If you are someone who doesn't yet know where your lines are, Sarah encourages you to go into the holidays with the mindset of - if I choose to have the pie than it is an opportunity for me to challenge wheat and conventional dairy, and I am going to find out how my body reacts to it Set yourself up to feel in control when making choices When you are approaching the holidays, if you know certain foods will make you ill, problem solve that ahead of time For the foods you are making the choice to enjoy that are not the usual foods for you, make sure that your decisions are conscious and empowered, and not emotional It is so much easier to bounce back/move forward when you make the choice to indulge Questions & Answers (47:35)Patricia - recommendations for snacks when traveling on a plane?Stacy usually packs something sweet, salty, and then a protein Steve's Paleo Kit EPIC Bars RxBars Steve's Dried Strawberries Dark Chocolate All of these go really well with Stacy's boys, but they also back more carb dense snacks for them as well, like plantain chips If Stacy is out and about and doesn't have something, salad and a bun-less burger is her go-to Sarah noted all of the AIP friendly products:EPIC Bar Bison, Bacon Cranberry and the Beef, Apple, Bacon US Wellness Meats jerky Pouched tuna Packed salad, raw veggies, fruit Dried fruit Plantain chips For Sarah's kids, she mostly packs them nut based products, Power Balls are a new favorite US Wellness Meats pork rhinds Justin - I don't have access to a kitchen, are there AIP-friendly pre-packaged foods?Be sure to look into the items mentioned in the answer to the first question Check out Target, Costco and Wal-Mart, they may have a lot of great options If you have a mini-fridge, you will likely be able to find a rotisserie chicken without seasoning You can also get salads without a pre-made salad dressing Keep some olive oil and balsamic vinegar on hand Fresh fruit Canned seafood Canned cod livers with some plantain chips Dehydrated liver in pill form SeaSnax Refer to the Paleo Parents Costco shopping list for a lot of convenient ideas Amazon Prime is a huge help with the items listed above, especially the subscribe and save feature Have a wonderful kickoff to your holiday season!
