NATO is “brain dead.” NATO is “obsolete.” NATO is “a relic of the Cold War.” These are the familiar tropes espoused by NATO's critics who have become drowned out by the Russian onslaught in Ukraine. With Putin's brutal invasion, the march of authoritarianism has quickened its step. NATO, however, has responded with a demonstration of unity and resolve capable of redefining the future of the Alliance, if we can bring ourselves to admit an uncomfortable truth: the fight for democracy in the 21st century is an existential one and NATO is an indispensable party to the conflict.

With Navalny's Death, Putin is Feeling More Confident than Ever

After a decade of provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin through organized protest, anti-corruption investigations, and taunting social-media posts, the opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died in a Russian prison, from what the Kremlin claims was a pulmonary embolism. The New Yorker staff writer Masha Gessen, who knew Navalny, calls his death “a shock, but not a surprise,” and says that, had Navalny been killed a decade ago, the incident might have led to even more widespread outrage. But Russian citizens and the world have since grown accustomed to Putin's iron grip on power. With Putin gaining momentum in his war on Ukraine and Western sanctions seeming to be unable to stop him, Navalny's death does not appear to signal Putin's weakness; rather, it suggests that the Russian President feels as emboldened as ever. Despite this, Gessen sees a future for Russia's political opposition movement. “They're not going to organize to bring down the regime,” Gessen tells Tyler Foggatt. “That's not the project. The project is to have a politics in place for when the regime collapses under its own weight. And I think it's not impossible that they could do it.”

It's been nearly two years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. With Putin's forces making strategic gains in the eastern part of the country, there's increasing international pressure for the U.S. to step up its military aid. America has provided more than $47 billion in support to Ukraine since the war began. But a new package of aid is stalled in Congress. Last week, the Senate passed a foreign aid package that included $61 billion for Ukraine. That was blocked by the Republican-controlled House which insisted it include a border security package. So what does that mean for the war going forward? And how do European allies view the need for American aid?Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast. The war in Ukraine is two years old. Inside Geneva discusses the latest military developments in Ukraine, the chances of peace and where the war will go from here.“Isn't there a limit when there are so many civilian deaths so you as a state have a responsibility to stop?” asks journalist Gunilla van Hall. How will this war end? Ukraine, with the West's support, is fighting a regime that poisons, imprisons, and kills its political opponents.Inside Geneva host Imogen Foulkes says: “Putin's dream of getting the whole country, if that's what he wanted, doesn't seem that achievable, and yet Ukraine getting its entire country back doesn't seem achievable either.”What chance is there of a peace agreement? Does the United Nations have any role to play?“With this particular cast of characters, it's not going to happen. With Putin on the one side and [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky and his entourage. They're committed to victory whatever that is,” says Jussi Hanhimäki, professor of international history at the Geneva Graduate Institute. Is the West's support for Ukraine waning? What could that mean for international stability?“Russia is basically independent as far as acting in this war, whereas Ukraine is dependent. And I think of the question of Western fatigue and the radar now is on the Middle East,” concludes analyst Daniel Warner. Join host Imogen Foulkes on the Inside Geneva podcast for the answers.Get in touch! With Putin threatening nukes and engaging in massive wargames, we'd better find out what's going on here. And why are we funding that war? On the floor of the United Nations last week, U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken told us exactly why when he said that President Putin must be stopped because he is “shredding the international order” that “we have sworn to defend.” And who was sitting just behind Blinken when he made this stunning admission? Victoria Nuland, of course, President Obama's Secretary of State for European Affairs, who lead the regime change in Ukraine in 2014.  And just like that, everything becomes clear. Plus, 90-year-old Cardinal Joseph Zen is in prison awaiting trial, facing a life sentence for opposing persecution of Christians in Communist China. And is Pope Francis condemning this outrageous persecution of one of his own cardinals? Don't be silly! Meanwhile, as Francis cancels traditional Catholics worldwide, another diocese announces that it is closing three-quarters of its churches. Yep, Catholics got the message: Religious services are 'non-essential'!  Thanks, Francis! Finally, Michael announces a major press conference to be held this coming Saturday that will formalize resistance to Francis and proclaim the Kingship of Christ in the face of Francis's attempt to appease his Globalist masters by canceling Christianity.  Listen to Michael Matt's podcasts: SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/1AdkCDFfR736CqcGw2Uvd0 APPLE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-michael-j-matt-show/id1563298989 GOOGLE: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9yZW1uYW50LXR2LmNvbS9mZWVkLz9jY XROYW1lPXRoZS1taWNoYWVsLWotbWF0dC1zaG93 If you'd like to contribute to RTV's expansion, please consider a donation: https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/donate-today Stay Connected to RTV: Subscribe to The Remnant Newspaper, print and/or digital versions available: https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/subscribe-today Subscribe to Remnant TV's independent platform: https://remnant-tv.com/user Sign up for Michael Matt's Weekly E-Letter: https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/subscribe-today/free-remnant-updates

Now it's Nuclear Threats and Sham Land Grab. The hosts for this show are Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guest is Chuck Crumpton. The USA and EU have been cautious not to accelerate the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Fighter planes, aggressive offensive weapons have been withheld from Ukraine with the claim that only defensive assistance has been given. This week Putin raised the stakes by conducting a sham vote to declare four regions of Ukraine as now part of Russia. With Putin's announcement, he declared the use of any and all means to protect Russia was not a bluff. All this bluster as his troops run in an all-out retreat from the very lands he just declared as new Russian territory. Obviously, they were in a frantic hurry and didn't have time to read Putin's victory memo. What new effective strategy should USA, EU and NATO now implement to counter Putin's new ploy? Since then it appears that the NATO countries have been more unified than anticipated and the Ukrainian army and citizens are putting a very courageous fight against the invaders that may be countering attempts by Putin to drive a wedge between America and the non-Anglo-Saxon EU. But can this unity last when the economic repercussions of sanctions and broken supply chains start to cause serious hardship for Europeans? Alasdair also suggested that the U.S. was trying to suck Russia into an untenable occupation that Putin wouldn't fall for. We will ask Alasdair how that might hurt Putin's cause. How does $108 oil come into play as central banks continue to print massive amounts of money in an effort to offset economic damage caused by sanctions and supply chain disruptions? With the equity markets currently getting slammed hard, money is flowing back into Treasuries reducing interest rates for the time being. But the longer term fundamentals that Alasdair talked about appear to be very much intact. Germany's president expressed deep remorse for the suffering his nation inflicted on Poland and the rest of Europe during World War II, warning of the dangers of nationalism as world leaders gathered Sunday in the country where the war started at incalculable costs."This war was a German crime," President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told Poland's top leaders, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders at a 80th anniversary ceremony marking World's War II's outbreak. Also in attendance were elderly Polish war veterans wearing military uniforms and a Holocaust survivor wearing a yellow Star of David and the striped clothes that prisoners wore at Nazi German death camps.Steinmeier expressed his sorrow over the mass killings Adolf Hitler's regime committed in Poland, which paid a huge price for being the place war began on Sept. 1, 1939. The German president expressed gratitude to Poles for the gestures of forgiveness Poland has bestowed in return."I bow in mourning to the suffering of the victims," Steinmeier said. "I ask for forgiveness for Germany's historical debt. I affirm our lasting responsibility."Two weeks after the German invasion, the Soviet army invaded Poland from the east, putting the country under a dual occupation that came with atrocities committed by two invaders. By the war's end nearly six years later, about 6 million Polish citizens had been killed, more than half of them Jews.Polish President Andrzej Duda recalled Poland's immense suffering and he appealed to those assembled not to close their eyes now to imperial tendencies and border changes imposed through force.Duda cited aggression against Georgia and Ukraine, and though he didn't name Russia, it was clear he found that country at fault as the aggressor."Recently in Europe we are dealing with a return of imperialist tendencies, with attempts to change borders by force, with aggression against countries," Duda said. "Turning a blind eye is not the recipe for preserving peace. It is a simple way to embolden aggressive personalities, a simple way to, in fact, give consent to further attacks."Germany's president had a modern-day warning of his own — about the dangers of nationalism — and described European unity as a guarantee for peace in the future.Polish authorities didn't invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend anniversary events because of Moscow's annexation of Crimea and support for separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine.Russia's recent rehabilitation of the Stalinist era, and a pact Soviet leader Josef Stalin made with Hitler that led to Poland's dismemberment in 1939, were apparently also behind the decisions not to invite Putin. That represented a change from 10 years ago, when Putin was invited amid attempts to thaw relations between the West and Russia at the time. With Putin not on the guest list, Russia's Foreign Ministry tried to make sure the Soviet Union's role in ending the war got acknowledged. It tweeted: "One may have varying opinions on Soviet policy during the initial period of World War II, but it is impossible to deny the fact that it was the Soviet Union that routed Nazism, liberated Europe and saved European democracy."President Donald Trump had originally been scheduled to attend, but canceled as Hurricane Dorian barreled toward the U.S. That removed the opportunity for potential comments about his go-it-alone "America First" approach to foreign policy, which has rattled allies in Europe.Pence spoke on behalf of the United States in Warsaw."While the hearts of every American are with our fellow citizens in the path of a massive storm, today we remember how the gathering storm of the 20th century broke into warfare and invasion followed by unspeakable hardship and heroism of the Polish people," he said.Pence said the Polish people "never lost hope" and "never gave in to despair."The "character, faith, and determination of the Polish people made all the differ...

For decades, Donald Trump has cultivated Russian money and investment to keep his hotels and other business interests afloat. But as Trump was cultivating Russian money; Vladimir Putin's Russia was cultivating him. With Putin consolidating power at home and trying to revive Russia as a great power abroad, he faced a challenge: democracy. “Color revolutions” – pro-democracy uprisings - threatened Russia's rise and Putin's rule. He blamed the United States and sought to hit back where we were most vulnerable: our politics. Donald Trump became the perfect vehicle; the ideal asset. As Trump's campaign built up steam, Russia set up its own campaign to support him. These two campaigns shared the same goals, same tactics, and were in constant contact. In other words, these campaigns colluded. Since coming to office, Trump has continued to align himself with Putin, all while trying to obstruct the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election and his own campaign's complicity in that effort. Host Max Bergmann is a veteran of the State Department who worked on sensitive military and national security issues under Secretaries of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Kerry. He now runs an initiative for the Center for American Progress Action Fund called The Moscow Project. Kyle Mills talks about his new Vince Flynn/Mitch Rapp novel "Red War". In recent years, a number of extremely dangerous world leaders have managed to increase their already considerable power. Some are busy tightening their grip on their countries like Recep Erdogan in Turkey or President Xi Jinping in China. Others, like Kim Jong-un in North Korea, already have uncontested control but are increasing their military capability. And finally, in a class by himself, is Vladimir Putin—a man who combines the dominance of the Kims with the military might of China. For a while, I’ve been pondering what would happen if a modern dictator like Putin became physically or mentally ill. How far would he go to prevent the loss of his position? Would anyone in his inner circle have the courage to push back? And what would the rest of the world risk to rein him in? Many of today’s dictators can’t just step down and trust that their replacement will protect them from the enemies they’ve made. Losing their edge—even for a moment—can be a matter of life or death. One moment of weakness and they could end up like Nicolae Ceausescu or Saddam Hussein. Of all the world’s dictators, Vladimir Putin worries me the most. Credible reports suggest that he became obsessed with the gruesome videos of Muammar Gaddafi’s death, watching them over and over again. The older he gets, the more consumed he becomes with the idea that his reign might end with his body being dragged through the streets of Moscow. With Putin as my inspiration, I started to scheme. If he became gravely ill, how would he continue to prevent his political opponents from rising up? How could he impede the foreign intelligence agencies looking to take advantage of his weakness? Who could he trust to protect him as he is transformed from de facto czar to wounded animal? In my mind, there’s nothing someone like Vladimir Putin wouldn’t do to maintain his position—murder every Russian politician not loyal to him, go to war with America and NATO, or even use his nuclear arsenal. Facing death on multiple fronts, he’d have nothing to lose. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Is Vladimir Putin the most powerful – and dangerous – man in the world? With Putin in the Kremlin, we have returned to an era where former Russian spies are mysteriously poisoned on British soil and where Russia feels emboldened to roll its tanks into an eastern European state. The Kremlin uses deadly force to wipe out opponents and stifle dissent at home, while overseas it props up Bashar al-Assad, the butcher of Damascus, who slaughters civilians with barrel bombs and chemical weapons. And that’s not to mention Moscow’s alleged meddling in the US election, which may have played a decisive role in the rise of Donald Trump. Tensions have increased so much in recent months that the UN secretary general António Guterres has warned of a ‘full-blown military escalation’ between Russia and the West.So what should we do? Some argue that the West has been appeasing Russia for too long, and that it’s finally time to get tough. Putin’s crimes in Syria and Ukraine – and allegedly on the streets of Salisbury – can’t be allowed to go unchecked, so we need to start ramping up the military pressure. Others claim, however, that the West is culpable for the new Cold War. After all, it was NATO’s decision to expand eastwards and take in former Soviet states that kick-started this new era of conflict. So should we instead show some humility and try to rebuild trust and fresh channels of communication with Russia? And what about the billions of pounds of dirty Russian money being laundered through the London property market and financial system? Much of Putin’s power stems from Russia’s kleptocratic economy, where his cronies control vast swathes of the nation’s wealth and hoard it overseas. By allowing the oligarchs to stash their cash in the City, are we not bolstering Putin’s grip on power? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
