PODCAST ENVY HAS REACHED 100 EPISODES! The all-cap is warranted. Looking back over 100 episodes, I can't help but think about the olden days of my business. When I launched Podcast Envy in 2018, I had a small roster of podcast editing clients and helped a handful of folks launch new shows. Oh, and the “team” was just me and Edwin Ruiz, CI's technical director extraordinaire. My centennial achievement is only half the story. The other half belongs to the Creative Impostor Studios team––a team I'm mad proud to say has gone global: Monica Braine, Associate Editor & Consulting Producer (Albuquerque, NM); Helen King, Associate Editor (Auckland, New Zealand); Alex Riegler, Podcast Manager (Chicago, IL); Edwin R. Ruiz, Technical Director (Chicago, IL); Heidi Stabbert, Associate Editor (Anchorage, AK); Caitlin Sunderland, Social Media & Outreach Coordinator, (Richmond, VA); and Lisa Widder, Show Notes Copywriter (Chicago, IL). To mark 100 shows, I asked each of them to offer up some sage counsel for podcasters, plus a piece of advice for folks wanting to do what they do on the daily. Let me tell you a Creative Impostor story for the New Year. It's about a woman taking a huge risk. The story begins during that weird week between Christmas and New Year's. Where noting gets done, no one knows what day it is and yet, somehow, you imagined getting caught up on all the things you didn't get to yet this year. It's Monday and I'm driving from Chicago to a small town in Wisconsin, not far over the state line. It's only 6pm but it grows increasingly darker and more ominous to this self-diagnosed city girl. I'm on a call with my friend Julia… running my internal monologue past her. (Thank you, Julia, as always for indulging me.) Why am I driving to Wisconsin right now? What exactly do I hope to accomplish? Who do I think I am? Why indeed? I'm taking a huge risk. It's not the same kind of risk I took when I moved from Michigan to the big city of Chicago out of college, or when I started auditioning for storefront theater productions around the city, or when I quit my full-time arts admin job to start my own yoga studio business, or even when I started this podcast. What feels different is that I'm telling you now, before it exists, before I even know exactly what it is. And the reason it's a risk to tell you is because I worry that I might not finish it. What has all the compelling drama of a marathon finish line and the adrenaline rush of a Formula One championship? Santa Fe Opera's 2022 Season, of course! Or so says Jane's guest. She sits down with Chief Artistic Officer David Lomelí to learn more about the incredible titles and talents set to grace the Santa Fe Opera stage next summer. The pair also charts David's path from his hometown in Mexico to the rarified stages of Europe and, finally, to his dream job here in the desert, where he's poised to break the clichés of opera programming, demystify the genre, and broaden the audience experience. It's impossible to not respond to David's enthusiasm for all things opera. Even the logistical complications brought about by COVID-19 inspire him. “It was such a beautiful challenge,” he says about the 2021 Season. “I gained so much perspective,” he adds, citing the physical safety precautions put into place, as well as the collective emotional support of everyone eager for a return to what David dubbed “big voices in an American house.” So much of the front-facing activity in that house runs through the Artistic office: the Orchestra, the Apprentice Programs, the music staff, the principal artists. It's no surprise, then, that David spends his days on what he cleverly calls player personnel evaluation. “We have to manage the architecture of the sound,” he says, describing how his efforts transform wish lists of individual talents into cohesive, magical casts. Next summer promises to deliver even more signature moments beginning with Carmen, the 2022 Season opener. After such a crowd-pleasing start, it would be easy for SFO to coast on the classics but “we're an international opera house [and] there's so many stories,” David says, explaining that the Santa Fe Opera's legacy of fostering new works offers audiences an opportunity to experience fresh perspectives. “I think that at the end of the day, it is [about] making the highest possible level of art that moves people to do action.” Unveiling the 2022 Season CREDITS Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. Singers aren't the only apprentices who are put through their paces at the Santa Fe Opera. Theater technicians also participate in an intermediate-to-advanced training program that offers world-class instruction and practical experience in stage operations, properties, audio & video, costumes, production/music services, makeup and wig construction, stage lighting, and scenic art. Jane chats with Stage Crew Apprentice Larry Ortiz and Properties Run Crew Apprentice Caitlynn Sandoval about their adventures behind (and, sometimes, underneath) the scenes. “Every night, there's always a crowd of people who stay to watch,” says Larry of audience members who forgo other intermission activities so they don't miss the second show––an intricately choreographed spectacle performed by Santa Fe Opera's brilliant stage crew. Unlike other venues where set changes take place behind a curtain, the action's on full display in The Crosby Theatre. Larry welcomes the chance to share this demanding aspect of opera with audiences, a mental and physical game of beat-the-clock. The work is grueling. He and his fellow technicians often log 80 hours of work a week between rehearsals and performances. The reward, however, is more than simply professional. “When you really don't think you have a lot in you and you just do them,” he says of the changeovers, “I like the...not the struggle, but the pushing yourself. I think that's cool. I enjoy that.” Caitlynn Sandoval agrees. “It's just so fun to come to work every day and love what you do and love who you work with!” The action is swift backstage. As a props apprentice, Caitlynn's attention is focused on making sure everything––from magic trunks to prop guns––is set properly and used safely. But this second-year apprentice isn't limiting her future career plans to a single department just yet. Instead, she's busy exploring every aspect of technical stage production while enjoying the moments unique to this Santa Fe Opera summer. “I think we all lost the feeling that we all get when the curtain opens or the orchestra starts tuning,” she Caitlynn says of last season's pandemic postponement. “I never want to lose this again.” CREDITS Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. Audiences and staff aren't the only ones excited for opera's return to the desert this season. Jane Trembley chats with soprano Teresa Perrotta and bass Allen Michael Jones, two performers in the 2021 Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program for Singers. Teresa and Allen Michael take listeners inside this “summer camp” for singers which is internationally recognized as one of the first, and most exceptional programs of its kind. They share stories about the audition process, performance opportunities, and the moments that make singing in front of live audiences again so special. Teresa Perrotta is busy. When she's not hiking desert trails (a first for this native Floridian) or training for her fight scene as Helena in SFO's production of A Midsummer's Night Dream, Teresa's collaborating with the Apprentice Program's world-renowned guest artists and instructors. “We get to work with a lot of different people and make new connections,” she says. “So, very busy. Lots of singing! But there's a combination of performing and really learning about our craft which is really nice.” Allen Michael Jones agrees. A relative newcomer to opera, he's quickly cultivated a love for the endurance, emotion, and vulnerability that this art form demands. In addition to his Santa Fe Opera Chorus duties, Allen Michael performs the role of Zaretsky in Eugene Onegin. Although the Apprentice Program's class and performance structure is intense, the rewards vastly outweigh the rigors. “You know, [it's] a lot to do in a little amount of time and there's no better feeling than knowing that I've actually accomplished something,” he says, adding, “I always say to myself, ‘I don't know how I'm going to pull this one off this time, but I know I will.'” Even with the added work of preparing scenes for the Apprentice Scenes showcase, Teresa and Allen Michael have both found time to sample Santa Fe's glorious cuisine. So, which one made a secret confession in the great chile debate? Soprano Angel Blue makes her Santa Fe Opera debut in concert Saturday, August 7, 2021. Jane caught a spare moment with Angel upon her arrival in Santa Fe to learn more about who she is on stage, off stage, and in the practice room. Angel also shares strong opinions and guidance for young singers, who may fall into the comparison trap with “the greats” who've come before them. Angel's Bio: Angel Blue has emerged in recent seasons as one of the most important sopranos before the public today. On September 23, 2019 she opened the Metropolitan Opera's 2019/2020 season as Bess in a new production of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. These performances followed her internationally praised French Opera debut and role debut as Floria Tosca at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July of 2019. She has also been praised for performances in many other theaters, such as the Vienna State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, San Francisco Opera, Seattle Opera, Theater an der Wien, Oper Frankfurt, and San Diego Opera. In the current season, Ms. Blue will appear in concert at the Carmel Bach Festival and in galas in St. Petersburg and Santa Fe, with fall performances of Fire Shut Up in My Bones and Porgy and Bess at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Welcoming opera-lovers back to the Santa Fe Opera this summer requires a massive behind-the-scenes effort, much of which is coordinated by the front-of-house team. Jane Trembley talks preparations and protocols with Julie Wheeler, the Santa Fe Opera's audience services director. Their conversation sheds light (and a few tears) on the grace, gratitude, and overwhelming emotions accompanying this season's return to the desert stage. The 2021 Season comes with a host of new challenges. Few know better than Julie. She and key colleagues across the company have spent the last 16 months researching, planning, and implementing many of the modifications SFO has put into place this season. However, she credits the entire staff with making the adjustments look and feel effortless. From newly installed touchless technology to seamless social distancing measures, this season's goal, says Julie, remains the same as always: to create an environment in which audiences can commune with opera surrounded by gorgeous natural scenery. “It's just going to be one of those things where I think what they can expect is what we've been talking about - that sense of being out and being someplace you know and love and experiencing your joy.” Joy is Julie's beacon. It colors memories of her first visit to Santa Fe, the one in which she visited her mother and never left. It flavors her overwhelming penchant for red chile (sorry, team green). Joy is also the force behind her compassion for ticket holders as she and her team contacted every single one last year to share that the pandemic had forced SFO into an unprecedented, season-long closure. As summer gets underway, Julie's excited to finally see how guests respond to SFO's new initiatives, including the nightly, on-site Simulcasts of every single show. “For people who maybe aren't ready yet to step foot into a theater with, you know, 15- to 1700 people, it gives them an opportunity to view from their car and tailgate and still have that wonderful experience.” No matter where they're seated this season, Julie's efforts ensure that audiences will rediscover their joy, safely. Magic, mischief, and mismatched lovers are at cross purposes when the Santa Fe Opera premieres one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies. Choreographer and dancer Reed Luplau says there's no better setting for A Midsummer Night's Dream than our glorious desert stage. Host Jane Trembley learns more about Reed's fascinating journey from his mother's dance studio on Australia's West Coast to some of the world's biggest venues. Reed also shares insight into his preparations for playing Puck, the fairy whose pranks cause so much confusion, as well as his process for crafting stories through movement. The conversation ends with Reed's must-see, do, and eat recommendations when in Santa Fe, a list that's sure to please locals and first-timers alike. “We're really trying to see and push how far Puck can be... how dangerous he could be, but with an innocence to him,” Reed says, offering listeners a glimpse into the collaborative relationship between choreographer and director Netia Jones. In his quest to bring fresh energy to Shakespeare's 400-year-old original, Reed gave thorough consideration to the complex, often cheeky relationship between his impish fairy and King Oberon, to whom he is the court jester. Puck's ethereal nature and juvenile antics may prompt comparisons to Peter Pan, but Reed has another character on his mind heading into rehearsals: Randall Boggs, the shape-shifting villain from Monsters, Inc. “I don't know if I'm giving too much away,” he laughs, “but, for now, I think it's playful, but it's not in an evil way.” Although A Midsummer Night's Dream marks Reed's first Shakespearian experience, this accomplished, joyful performer is no stranger to Santa Fe. He made his debut here in 2013 playing Bosie in Santa Fe Opera's world premiere of Oscar, a residency that instilled in him a great appreciation for the desert. His list of area favorites includes Lake Abiquíu for outdoor adventure and dining on the patio at Gabriel's. As fond as he is of those spots, Reed's most cherished memories of Santa Fe are those made on The Crosby Theatre stage. “The acoustics at Santa Fe are just incredible! My favorite part is the water,” he says, referencing the small reflecting pool in front of the stage, often lovingly referred to as the moat. “It's so gorgeous, and it adds another element to the scenery of where you are.” Listeners can find Reed's list of Santa Fe favorites in the credits below. Rising star Avery Amereau lends her lush contralto voice in the role of Olga in the Santa Fe Opera's new production of Eugene Onegin, Alexander Pushkin's story of rakes and romantic mistakes set to glorious music by Tchaikovsky. While this marks the singer's Santa Fe Opera debut, Avery is well acquainted with Olga and New Mexico's great chile debate. Host Jane Trembley chats with her about the perks of possessing an authentic contralto voice, the singer's less than traditional introduction to opera, and a favorite (shocking!) memory from her Metropolitan Opera debut. Avery also shares wise words with novice singers about staying true to one's voice and recommends thematic elements audiences should note while attending this sumptuous opera. “There's an idea that contralto roles are usually, like, old ladies or nurses,” Avery laughs. Contraltos - singers whose vocal range is the lowest female voice type - are often cast as evil sisters or, as Avery likes to say, the witches and britches of the opera world. She sees teenage Olga as a bit of a flirt, a social butterfly - characteristics that will require a fresh perspective from Avery when the two meet again. “It'll be a bit more challenging in that way than when I was at Julliard because I've lived so much more life since then,” she says, including becoming a new mother. In addition to heralding the singer's debut with the Santa Fe Opera, Eugene Onegin also marks Avery's return to performances after the pandemic. “I think it's very fitting to come back to this role,” she says. “It has a very special significance for me.” Last seen at the Santa Fe Opera in 2002, Eugene Onegin allows audiences to experience Avery's vibrant contralto in Russian. The feat required her to learn the Cyrillic alphabet and make sense of consonant clusters and diphthong pronunciations not found in standard American English. Tchaikovsky's soaring score is worth the effort, though. “It's a good mix,” Avery says of Olga. “I have a duet; I have an aria; I have a quartet; I have an ensemble. So, I get a nice smattering of everything possible.” Audiences will, too. *** Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. Celebrated countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will channel Dracula and Dionysus when he makes his Santa Fe Opera debut this season in the world premiere of The Lord of Cries. Host (and uber fan-girl) Jane Trembley chats with Anthony about what it's like having a lead role crafted especially for him by composer John Corigliano, with libretto by Mark Adamo. The pair also discuss why this heart-stopping production is the perfect opera with which to entice audiences back to the Crosby Theatre. For those scratching their heads at the term countertenor, you know it when you hear it - and you've heard it. Think Prince, the BeeGees, and even Justin Timberlake “just done in a more full-throated way,” Anthony explains. He traces the style's origins back to the castrati popular in 16th-century opera. Those performers were widely revered as the rockstars of their time. The vocal range of countertenors is our modern equivalent, minus the castration, of course. Their high-voltage sound lends itself well to characters who occupy a more mysterious realm. “Contained within the countertenor's voice are all of these questions of, really, identity as it relates to gender, as it relates to sexuality,” says Anthony, adding, “now we live in a time when everyone is thinking in a more open-minded way.” The Lord of Cries takes full advantage of Anthony's dynamic talents. John Corigliano, whom Anthony has known for 20 years, wrote his first opera, The Ghost of Versailles, in 1991. He hadn't written a second opera, until now. The piece poses complex questions about the human condition against an unsettling, ethereal backdrop. It's a thrilling and terrifying space to play in as there's no precedent, no previous productions from which Anthony might draw insight. “It's like having a suit that is tailor-made for your own body.” As for making his debut on the legendary desert stage in the lead role of a new work, Anthony says, “Santa Fe has been at the forefront of bringing American opera to fruition, you know, new operas, new composers, and making it happen, and that's been so thrilling.” *** Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. Even folks who've never seen a performance of The Marriage of Figaro will instantly recognize its famous overture from numerous films, commercials and cartoons. Jane Trembley talks with Colombian-American soprano Vanessa Vasquez about her upcoming turn as Countess Almaviva in the Santa Fe Opera's 2021 Season production of Mozart's beloved romantic comedy. Vanessa also gives listeners a glimpse into an opera singer's life during lockdown, including the silver linings that have kept her sane, as well as her preparations for returning to peak vocal form just in time for summer. On its surface, The Marriage of Figaro is a comedic commentary on the social classes. Dig deeper, however, and audiences will find more than embarrassing situations set to catchy music. There's a subtler supporting theme at play, one that coaxes Countess from listless, disparaging teenager to self-assured woman. “I think the strongest, most resonant theme of the opera is reconciliation,” says Vanessa. The character's personal growth has informed Vanessa's professional development since she first began exploring the role at 19. “I learned most everything I know about long, beautifully sustained, and spinning legato lines from her,” she says fondly of Countess, adding, “she's still teaching me new things every time.” As the staff assembles to welcome guests back to the Santa Fe Opera, Vanessa's preparations are in full swing as well. Stamina, she says, is key to getting from rehearsals to opening night. Thanks to the new tennis hobby she took up during lockdown, she won't have to worry about lagging energy! Jane couldn't let her guest go without asking what advice the gifted soprano might lend aspiring opera singers. Vanessa, who captured the Santa Fe Opera audience's attention in 2019 with her swoon-worthy turn as Mimi in La Bohème, urges young performers to just go for it. “Don't wait. I think personally I was sort of waiting for this moment of ‘I'm ready, I'm perfect, I feel polished.' I was waiting for that feeling, and it never came.” Hear Vanessa singing “Porgi, Amor”: The Marriage of Figaro | Santa Fe Opera *** Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. A great voice isn’t the only requirement for admission into the Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera program. Nor is vocal technique the program’s sole focus. Host Jane Trembly chats with program director Kathleen Clawson and John Daugherty, a graduate of the program’s inaugural class, and now Assistant Director of Voice and Opera Program Director at the University of North Florida. They discuss the program’s early days, why such training matters, and how a pivot to virtual learning has expanded the program’s reach. Jane’s guests also share their favorite performance memories, sprinkled with a staged beheading and an Elvis impersonation! Pre-professional arts programs like the Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera shape the singing stars and music lovers of tomorrow. “And, it is the very best job,” Kathleen confirms of her most cherished role in an impressive career. As you’d expect, the program provides its participants with access to the highest caliber voice lessons, musical coaching, masterclasses, and community performance opportunities. What may come as a surprise is the level of support offered beyond the rehearsal room: college audition preparations, guidance on school choice, lovingly crafted letters of recommendation , even help with self-recording and video editing at home, necessitated by pandemic restrictions. The Young Voices program prepares students for success whether they choose to pursue a career in opera or venture beyond. Shares Kathleen, “It's our belief that the skills needed to study music at a high level carry over to anything that you want to do.” A passion for classical singing and a chance to immerse himself in the craft attracted John Daugherty to the Young Voices’ inaugural class back in 2008. “It was really fulfilling, and it was demanding. And I loved it!” Looking back on those two years, he says, ”It was all about Fallout Boy and Green Day at the time. And suddenly I was with a group of kids my own age, who thought that opera was also awesome.” He credits the program for providing him with a skillset that has taken him all across the country. “Any success that I have encountered... has been a trickle-down from that overarching lesson that I learned in a program such as the Santa Fe Opera Young Voices.” *** Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. What does it take to remain cool as cucumber water amid the intense technical demands of the world’s grandest art form? Jane dishes about the drama with guest Chelsea Antrim Dennis, Santa Fe Opera’s Director of Production. Trap door danger! Raging storms! Mid-performance fainting! Chelsea has navigated a few professional storms in her 16 seasons with SFO. Her responsibilities aren’t limited to the action on stage; Chelsea is known as the voice of the Santa Fe Opera (her dulcet tones grace the pre-show announcement) and she oversees health and safety protocols throughout the opera’s sprawling campus. Jane gets the inside scoop on what infrastructure changes patrons, staff, and artists can expect at the opera this summer in response to COVID-19. In her current role since 2020 (the first woman to hold the position in Santa Fe Opera history!), Chelsea supervises multiple departments including scenery, props, costumes, electrics, and wigs and makeup. She approaches the dynamic needs of each artisan under her supervision with a collaborative attitude. Each production presents its own artistic and practical pieces to puzzle out. Chelsea maintains an incomparable ability to adapt when those circumstances tip beyond her control - including that time she lost consciousness in the middle of calling a live performance! True to form, she ensured that the show went on. Chelsea’s no less determined to provide everyone with a safe and enjoyable experience this season. The tried and true masking, social distancing, and contactless strategies the company has put in place extend far beyond the audience spaces of SFO’s majestic desert setting. “I think that everybody's so excited to be able to get back to work and are prepared to follow those in order to have a safe season.” Jane couldn’t let her guest go without a rapid round of final questions. I have been thinking about today's guest for 2 years — ever since my first Podcast Movement conference in Chicago when he hosted the PMx talks before the OFFICIAL start of the conference — hilarious, welcoming, the best of MCs! In this episode, you'll get a healthy dose of "GayDD", shirtless Archie from Riverdale, and #truthtalk about identity, creativity, and vulnerability with Matt Marr. Matt Marr is an actor, narrative therapist, show host, self-proclaimed chatterbox and host of The Dear Mattie Show. Personally, I love that he always calls me (and everyone else, but I like to think it's just me) “sugar.” And if you can't get enough of Matt, head over to The Dear Mattie Show because he has an interview with ME is waiting for you! Episode 070. "But everyone keeps saying just find your passion -- find that one thing and follow your bliss and I thought well... I have a bunch of passions, so which passion are we talking about? And that's why I kept feeling really stuck in that decision of needing to pick one thing." ~Monica Rivera I'm obsessed with podcasts and I always want MORE so there's this thing I do once a week in the She Podcasts Facebook Group on Wednesdays. I scroll through a VERY long thread of new podcast episodes by other women podcasters and pick a few I've never heard of to check out. Most of the time, I decide they're not for me but every once in a while, a show really stands out and I fall in love. That's what happened with Monica's podcast: You Wanna Do What?! When I first heard it, I thought, "I want to to be friends with this woman." Her show feels so motivating without feeling coachy or preachy or overwhelming. And I'm so happy to be getting to know her and introduce her to you! 2 stories that stand out in this interview: 1) How Monica got into podcasting 2) How she was inspired by her grandmother not to wait to try new things Listen to Monica's podcast You Wanna Do What?! I love episode 045: Are You Really Living? "I am comparing myself to myself... what I think I should be doing versus what I am doing, which I think is the worst kind because you're with yourself all the time. So you're constantly almost at war if you let yourself be." ~Monica Rivera Connect with Monica: Website Instagram Facebook Twitter "And some days honestly, I just have to sit in that space and let me feel it and just kind of go through it of kind of beating myself up a little bit and then the next day hoping that it gets better, but I never try to force myself out of something that I'm feeling." ~Monica Rivera Resources & Links Podcast Movement 2018 (I'm speaking there Wednesday @ 11am!!!) Episode 069. "I had to be able to sit there in that uncomfortable place of this is not as good as I want it to be — and that's okay."~Robyn Conley Downs I discovered Robyn when she needed a podcast editor for her new show the Feel Good Effect. That was a year ago and since then, I have listened in detail to every single one of her episodes and she continues to amaze me with her big heart, inquisitive mind, business savvy, and seemingly superhuman ability to "do it all." As we discuss in this episode, there's nothing superhuman about it and, in reality, there's a give and take to everything. In fact, in terms of mindset, one of Robyn's favorite sayings is "gentle is the new perfect." I love it and you're going to love Robyn. Take Robyn's Wellness Personality Quiz!!! Episode 065. “She asked me how could I express gratitude. My first thought was “to whom?” But she meant… gratitude to mySELF.” ~Andrea Klunder Pause, take a deep breath, lift your head, and look around... I just released an episode in my new-ish podcast about the craft of podcasting, Podcast Envy, about downloads, numbers, stats, etc and you probably know already how I feel about using those metrics as a measure for success from my Creative Impostor episode 57: What do numbers have to do with success? And I propose a question that applies to areas of life and work beyond podcasting, which is — if these numerical metrics were to disappear… If you could not easily see how many followers you had on Facebook or Instagram, how many people liked your picture, or retweeted your post. If you had no idea how many people were subscribed to your email newsletter or opened it or unsubscribed. If you did not have a head count for the audience of your talk or your show… If you did not see an actual number… … how would YOU measure success? How would you value your OWN work? Sometimes I feel like my own numbers are too small. Like I'm working and working and working and no one notices or cares. Like I'll never reach that critical mass of followers where suddenly the conversion statistics come out to actual sales of services and I can actually earn a sustainable comfortable income off of the content I create and the work that I do. And sometimes I feel like a fraud, teaching podcasting classes, encouraging hundreds of other people to create a podcast and being positioned as the “expert” or making recommendations on gear, equipment and software when certainly there are other people out there who know more in that department than I do. And I keep putting myself out there despite those feelings. And THEN what happens? Listen and find out... Episode 064. “Self-consciousness is the assassin of authenticity.” ~Stacey Herrera Stacey Herrera is the producer and host of the podcast The Sensuality Project. I love it, it makes me blush and it makes me think about topics we often don't get to talk about in a constructive way. Stacey is facilitating a premium community JUST FOR these kinds of conversations amongst "sister friends": The Sense & Sexability Society In this episode, we talk about: The difference between sensuality and sexuality Why it's so important for us to normalize and talk about sex The connection between sex, money and creativity Our chakras (energy!) and our sexuality Impostor syndrome manifesting as self-consciousness Advice from Stacey! And then I read his new book The Heart to Start AND now it's available as an audio book on Audible. David's work is the gift that keeps on giving -- and yet, I haven't paid for any of it. Yet. "The challenge is how do you not give yourself away? How do you keep your own soul and integrity intact? You need to have these reserves of your own worth." ~Dylan Rice Episode 059: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/059 Crowdsource your perks... In this episode, I reconnect with singer, songwriter, guitarist, arts administrator and my former roommate from my early 20s, Dylan Rice. Dylan is an artist who has both left his day job to make music and record an album AND has kept his day job to make music and is now recording his THIRD self-funded studio album. And he's doing this really cool thing where he reached out to his creative community to crowdsource the perks for his current crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. And this episode has music! All tracks from Dylan's 2nd album Electric Grids & Concrete Towers, used with permission from Dylan Rice. Check out the campaign here and consider supporting his dream, while getting some new music AND fun perks, including an artsy Meditation for Creative Minds gift from me. "There's something sacred about passing the microphone to each individual woman and what's even MORE exciting and sacred is the way in which everyone was LISTENING to each other." ~Andrea Klunder In this episode, I have FIVE incredible women gathered to talk about intentional creative community and, of course, that pesky little impostor voice! My guests! Licia Berry... bestselling author, artist, speaker, mentor, women's advocate, author of I Am Her Daughter* Lisa Nalbone... educator, advocate for self-directed lifelong learning, author of Life Sparks Wendy Parman... singer, actor, writer, voice teacher, creator of Callie's Solo web series Isabelle Rizo... business mentor for the next generation of successful female entrepreneurs, artist, filmmaker, facilitator of The Singularity Circle Emily Stroia Gold... professional intuitive, spiritual medium, poet and author of Into the Light Let me set the scene for you... A cool, crisp fall day in Chicago. Six women, including myself, gather in my 2nd floor vintage walkup apartment. Many of us have only ever met online, but we've all been brought together for a single purpose. We have tea and then we sit in a circle. I have two microphones -- one for me, and one that we pass around the circle as each woman shares her own story, ideas, and words of encouragement. This is the closest thing to a wise women's council that I've ever experienced. I feel that we're sitting around the bonfire shaping the future of our culture and community ahead. We talk about: The bridge between online and offline space to create community The Supernova personal art and storytelling event designed by Isabelle Rizo, for which we were all gathered The importance and power of cultivating intentional community Getting clear on your story, your why, what you want to create in the world, and also your boundaries How our impostor voices show up and what we do about it *Books are affiliate links to Amazon. "One minute does not change who I am." ~Kelly Covert (upon reflecting over the disappointment of missing her triathlon personal record by one minute.) Everything counts... I met Kelly Covert online through a podcast mentoring program with Elsie Escobar (episode 044) and then in person at 2017 Podcast Movement and I LOVE Kelly's presence. She is affirming, clear and joyful. She is an incredible listener AND she totally gets my type A, overachiever, creative perfectionist personality. In this episode we talk about the true inner voice you want to listen to (i.e. NOT the impostor voice or inner mean girl), daily practices for cultivating your connection to that voice and your deepest desires, overcoming perfectionism and recognizing your own inherent worth outside of achievement and productivity. “If you never do another thing, you are worthy right now.” ~Kelly Covert Connect with Kelly KellyCovert.com In Her Voice podcast Facebook: trimommylife Instagram: kellyjcovert Twitter: kellyjcovert Connect with Andrea Website Facebook: andreaklunder.creative Instagram: andreaklunder Podcast Envy: Podcast Launch, Craft & Coaching Services Chicago Women's Creative Collective Resources & Links Kelly's 5 Days of Journaling for Visionary Women My interview on Kelly's podcast, In Her Voice As far as holiday self-care Kelly says: Everything counts. "Our baseline isn't happiness, our baseline is contentment.. We have to actively seek happiness." ~Sarah Buino Connection is the only way through all of this... What if we could stop talking to ourselves like a jerk? What if we could give up shame completely? What if happiness was only a perspective shift away? In this episode, I'm talking with licensed clinical social worker, certified addictions counselor and Certified Daring WayTM (that's Brene Brown's program!) facilitator, Sarah Buino of Head/Heart Therapy all about: Sarah's struggle with impostor syndrome & shame How did Sarah get into her work, specifically with addiction counseling Why Sarah calls herself a “joy pusher” and “empathy snob” How does Sarah keep herself moving forward Happiness vs. contentment How to shift perspective Using music as therapy How to stop talking to yourself as though you're an a*@hole! What Sarah is excited about! CONNECTION Best advice for mental health from Sarah “Everybody's crazy, everyone. Including me. And anybody who says they're not crazy- run. Because they're the craziest of them all.” ~Sarah Buino Resources & Links As far as holiday self-care for mental health and shame here are a couple of things from Sarah: Take breaks. Lots of time with family can be intense, so make sure there's down time. Pick your battles. There's still likely to be discord in politically diverse families and while we all must remain diligent in our social justice quests, conservative Uncle Joe probably won't change his mind because of that one fact you share. People don't respond to facts anyway...they respond to feelings. Be mindful. Family can push our buttons more fiercely and quickly than anyone else and shame is often one of the strong emotions that gets kicked up by our nearest and dearest. Shame wants us to either fight, flee or people-please, so when you feel those urges coming on, take a time out! Reach out. When you do experience shame, the best thing to do is connect with someone who can understand. How can we redefine self-care? Show Notes: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/053 "...my ultimate self-care ritual was turning into an anxiety-creating monster." ~Andrea Klunder It's November -- my BIRTHDAY MONTH!!! It's the time of year, where the weather begins to chill, leaves fall from the trees (at least here in the midwest), and nature is calling us to go inside, snuggle up with a cup of tea or cocoa and become more introspective. And yet, the winter holidays are right around the corner and they are so contra to that natural cozy, introspective instinct. They call upon us to give, and go, and move through space and eat sugary goodness... it can be exhausting. So let's explore how in the midst of our work, in the midst of our daily lives, in the flow of everything else, and in the chaos of the holidays, we can create an attitude of self-care that doesn't require us to check-out from everything else around us. "When I had a full-time job, I would get giddy with the idea of taking a mental health day from work using one of my sick days and yet, ever since I became self-employed... About Nikki Ricks “Running a business is almost like athletics, where it's 90% mental and 10% technical.” ~Nikki Ricks Nikki is a business coach for creative women-owned businesses. After earning a bachelor's degree in communications and master's degree in urban planning, she was working at a Chicago architecture firm when she had her first daughter. Nikki wanted a more flexible way to work, which sparked the idea of creating a coworking space with in-house childcare. As she researched the market and held events at local coworking and play spaces, her favorite part of the business was meeting more of Chicago's incredible, inspirational, powerful professional women and talking to them about their work. She has been helping women get organized since implementing the rotating recess snack with her first-grade girl gang and overhauling friends' rooms on play dates. Now Nikki works at FemiNest, where her goal is to help build scalable businesses straight from the brains of female entrepreneurs. In her free time she mentors at 1871 and 2112. She loves goals, business models, to-do lists, brainstorming, efficiency, and getting you a freaking paycheck. This episode was mixed by Edwin R. Ruiz of Mondo Machine. “We're all different and that's part of human nature, to celebrate those differences.” -Sarah Dennis Calling in, rather than calling out… In this episode, I had the privilege to discuss the history and the current reality of racism in our society as well as the potential for change from the inside out (and the outside in) with educator Sarah Dennis and artist & activist Ashley Lana Scott. Sarah and Ashley had never met before so this was a truly candid conversation about what it takes to be an ally, how to support one another in looking inward at our internalized racism (regardless of skin color), and why these sometimes uncomfortable conversations are crucial to the cultural dialogue. (BTW, that's the difference between calling in and calling out… IN is initiating a conversation, OUT is pointing a finger in an accusatory way.) Of course we talk about impostor syndrome and feeling like a total fraud when trying to have said difficult conversations, too! This is a conversation that is humorous, sensitive, hopeful and deeply thought-provoking. So take a deep breath, relax your mind open, have a listen, and let me know what you think over in the Facebook Group… And if you haven't already, check out Episode 045: Talking to strangers, where you'll hear how I met Julie and why I'm taking on a theme on the show that pushes me out of my comfort zone. For me it's not a call to action, being an ally. “We see things that are so big, they're so daunting, we say, ‘There's no way can change anything. Who am I to even try?' And with that mentality, it's not going to change.” ~Andrea Ranae Johnson You have more power than you think. This month, I made a commitment to join an initiative to build solidarity for social justice headed up by my new friend and colleague, Julie Neale, host of Mother's Quest podcast. It's called the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative and I had NO IDEA how I was going to approach the topics of social justice and racism on The Creative Impostor when I said “yes.” Almost immediately, Andrea Ranae Johnson's new program, Coaching as Activism, popped up in my Facebook feed (I swear they're spying on my real life conversations) and I knew I had to talk with her on the show. In this episode, Andrea Ranae is giving you some real strategies for how YOU can shift your awareness away from futility and overwhelm and toward acknowledging your power and learning how to use your power for good. If you think this topic sounds heavy, please don't skip it!!! One thing I love about Andrea Ranae is how she approaches both the inner work of self-help and the outer work of activism with positivity, hope and a down-to-earth perspective. Let's just say, it's part of my creative growing edge. “Parenting, art making, writing, teaching — generally how you show up in our everyday lives can be a form of activism… actively dismantling the things that don't serve us in society or in our communities and also creating and cultivating new ways of being or new systems, new structures that better serve the collective” ~Andrea Ranae Johnson Connect with Andrea Ranae Andrea Ranae's website Andrea Ranae's Coaching as Activism programAndrea Ranae's Podcast: Liberty Twitter Instagram Facebook Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “How can I push the boundaries and expand the possibility for what we are creating here together in this podcast relationship through this technological, magical, modern connection that we have?” ~Andrea Klunder Confidence = the decision to try, Self-doubt = the decision not to. What happens when you get bored with the thing you're creating? You switch it up, try something new, and sometimes… that can make you feel like a total impostor all over again! What do you do then? Take an action, talk to strangers, do the thing so you can be the type of person who does that thing and you can trick your brain out of feeling like a fake. Learn how, listen now… “When you go to a conference… people are there because they want to talk to strangers, they want to expand their network, they want to meet people, they want to make connections… it's not ‘networking', and it's not trying to collect as many business cards as possible… it's all about making connections… and a lot of times that doesn't happen in a session.” ~Andrea Klunder Connect with Andrea… FacebookInstagramChicago Women's Creative Collective Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “It was, for me, a self-help tool. It was a way in which I experienced a very deep transformation in who I was as a woman — as a person.” ~Elsie Escobar, on podcasting How do we, as content creators, begin to break the patterns and shift the narrative? It might not be what you think… Elsie Escobar is one of my podcasting idols. Actor, yoga teacher, podcast producer & advocate (you can see why we connect with each other so well), her original podcast, Elsie's Yoga Class was one of the first I ever listened to — before I even really knew what a podcast was! Now, after listening to her for years and working one on one with Elsie through her E-League mentoring program, I have a whole new appreciation for the question, “What else is possible?” because for Elsie (and for me), podcasting is about so much more than downloads, sponsors and statistics. And no matter what kind of content you are creating in the world, through social media, a blog, a podcast, videos, workshops, your business, your art, etc, YOU have the option to follow the pack or carve a whole new path to shift the conversation. Find out how, listen now… “Go to the things that YOU really resonate with because that's the conversation we need to have, and THEN you frame it on your point of view because that's going to start to break patterns.” ~Elsie Escobar, on media consumption and creation Connect with Elsie ElsieEscobar.com Instagram Twitter E-League Podcast Mentoring The Panel at Podcast Movement She Podcasts Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “If I start the day with my inner child playful activities, I'm a lot more productive, I've been able to entertain my inner child so I can later on get on with the ‘work' and also I'm more joyful and then other things come from that as well.” ~Ruth Humphreys Just hit “play” and start your day… What did you LOVE to do as a child? Something that you could do all day and it would be as if time stood still… Ruth Humphreys, former librarian, is a storyteller for children and a coach for grown-ups who want to find their playful mission in life through connection with your inner child. This phrase, inner child, typically would make me roll my eyes, but in this case, I'm inspired and energized by Ruth's imaginative approach to re-discovering wonder! “When children are playing, they're processing emotions — they're processing what's going on… and as adults we're the same… it's very therapeutic.” ~Ruth Humphreys Connect with Ruth On the Web Wonder Led Leaders Circle on FB Ruth on Facebook Instagram Ruth's Ice Cream Video Ruth's Inner Child Morning Music Playlist Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “There's a very blurry line between making art and working when your art is your life and your passion is your art and your art becomes your business and your business is work… it's a tricky cycle.” ~Andrea Klunder Self-promotion & Play like Oil & Water? Maybe not… When I was a kid, the other kids on the block would get frustrated because rather than just riding bikes together, I always wanted to creates some structure and do things like make them play traffic cop. Not a lot has changed, in that even as an adult, I have a tendency to turn my creative passions into hard work. But what happens when forces in your life, your community, your clients, and even your tarot cards conspire to get you out of your rut and just play? “At first I was like, “ugh, I have so much work to do this weekend, I don't have time to screw around in the forest preserve, shooting slow motion video for what purpose I have no idea.”” ~Andrea Klunder Connect with Andrea… FacebookInstagramChicago Women's Creative Collective Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “I looked at everything I saw being done and asked: What else? What isn't here? How could I do this differently? What is a way to approach this problem that only I can (or will?)” ~Andrea Klunder Swimming my way out of the impostor cycle… Last week I released a very fun, funny, insightful, inspiring interview with Jennifer Briney of Congressional Dish podcast and we both admitted to having imposter-y feelings independently of each other on the same day AT the same podcasting conference. She was there to give a keynote about her brilliant listener supported funding model for her show in a month when her revenue had dipped to its lowest point in quite some time. And I was pitched by her agent to interview her on my show in a month when my download numbers were abysmal b/c I basically hadn't published an episode for 6 weeks. She was thinking “Who am I to talk to all these people about getting listeners to fund your podcast?” And I was thinking “Who am I to have a keynote speaker with thousands of followers on my dinky little show?” The other day, I was teaching yoga to a group of my Kindergarten and pre-K students and one of the things that we do is toward the end, after they've gotten to run around in circles and make animals sounds and play crazy yoga games, we have quiet coloring time before our rest time (i.e. savasana.) I asked them to drawan animal of their choice playing however they would like and I took out some crayons to join them. I drew some water and a fish jumping out with a sunshine. And one kid said, “Why is that fish in the sky? Fish don't fly.” And I said, “Oh, he's jumping out of the water.” Another kid said, “but a fish can't stay out of water very long or it will die.” And I said, “That's true. But just like when you go swimming, if you go under water you hold your breath, a fish can hold it's breath for just a moment when it jumps out and then breath again when it goes back under water.” One kid said, “Yeah, and you can wear goggles under water so you can see.” This seemed to satisfy them and so I drew a face under the water, to which one said, “Why is there a face under the water?” I said, “Oh that's me, swimming with goggles on. Doesn't that look like me?” “No,” she said. You don't even have a body. “I haven't drawn it yet, “ I replied. “And why is your mouth like that?” another one asked. “I'm making a fish face.” I said. “Why?” “Because it's fun!” I defended. They considered my drawing skeptically for a moment, until one said. “That really doesn't look like you and you should draw a bathing suit.” And they went back to drawing their own masterpieces. And I looked at my juvenile crayon drawing, thinking “Well I'm not an artist.” AND viscerally remembering the feeling in my cheeks of being ashamed and frustrated as a child when I couldn't make my art look the way I wanted. Of fearing someone would laugh at what I made. AND I was also thinking, “Dang. Kindergarteners are mean!” “Look at all those limiting beliefs and potentially missed opportunities I just created for myself. Simply by focusing on what I am not.” ~Andrea Klunder Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “Give yourself a real shot at the dream, go for it, and if you fail, fine, but at least you gave it a shot and you're definitely going to learn something that will help.” ~Jennifer Briney Create the thing YOU want to exist… We're switching gears just a bit on this episode — we are talking politics — I KNOW TABOO!!! But don't roll your eyes in disgust, frustration and overwhelm. You are going to LOVE this conversation with Jennifer Briney of Congressional Dish podcast. I discovered Jennifer and her show earlier this year at Podfest in Florida where she was keynoting about how she funds her podcast, her production team and her life 100% through direct listener support — no ads, no sponsors, no links to sign up for her XYZ course. Just straight up value for value between what she's creating and the people who consume it. You'll get to hear about our mutually impostor-y experiences around Podfest, the awkwardness of asking for money, Jen's huge leap of faith, and her take on what's going on in government right now (without straight up ranting and bashing.) Also… we laugh a LOT in this episode. Who knew politics could be so funny? “I felt like one of those people that sits by the subway with a little cup in my hand being like, ‘Change sir?' Back then, I really had no idea what I was doing and I felt like a total impostor when I interviewed Nikki b/c actually we had never even met in real life. “I keep thinking I need to do more– That I need more clients. That I'm going to run out of money. That I need to keep pushing forward until I make it to… where exactly?” ~Andrea Klunder Letting go of busy… It has been a BUSY month filled with transitions and new things. Of course I knew it would be because our theme for the last few weeks both in The Creative Impostor Facebook Group and in the Chicago Women's Creative Collective has been Creative Woo-Woo: mystical practices for your creative workflow I've interviewed Intuitive Counselor and Self-Discovery Coach Charlotte Elea about tarot and oracle cards for developing your intuition and Spiritual Embodiment Teacher Monica Martin about using your body's felt-sense to guide your decision making. AND I've done informal live video interviews with both of them in TheCreative Impostor FB group AND with Naturopath & Holistic Healer Samantha Mant (who will be on the podcast in the coming months) on coordinating your creative cycles with the moon and with feminine cycle. Put all of these experiences together with the tarot readings I've been incorporating into my almost-daily meditation practice AND some very practical DEEP coaching I've been doing with the luminous podcasting guru Elsie Escobar as part of her new e-league mentoring program and…. whew! “I'm getting all intuitive, introspective, one with the universe, aligned in my purpose – flow – flow – flow all OVER THE PLACE!” ~Andrea Klunder It's actually been so intense that I'm alternating between these bursts of manic creative insight where I can't sleep and I'm up way late into the night — so late I hear the birds chirping in the pre-dawn darkness outside my window And then these periods of deep sleep without an alarm clock, where I will sleep for 11 hours at a stretch. And in between all of that are the client deadlines for projects new and old, the smattering of yoga and meditation classes I teach throughout the week, the orientations for the After School Matters podcasting program for high schoolers I'm creating and facilitating starting this summer, hosting and expanding the Chicago Women's Creative Collective and producing this podcast. Busy. Are you exhausted just listening to this? And this leads me back to my coaching with Elsie at the beginning of this month. I asked her to help me figure out what to do next with The Creative Impostor, where I fit into the podcasting industry, how to leverage my unique gifts, skills and strengths for a sustainable purpose-driven business. And here's what she said to me first: You have the ability to “become what is needed” in any situation— you have the solution for any problem. BUT what do you want to do? “I have everything I need. “I eventually came to a turning point where I realized that from here, anything was possible. I started listening to entrepreneurial podcasts, and financial podcasts, creativity podcasts and “how-to-podcast” podcasts… I was able to shift my view just enough from “no options” to “infinite options!” ~Andrea Klunder How podcasting and meditation saved me from bankruptcy, depression and impostor syndrome… I launched my first business in 2008. Infuse Yoga Spa was my vision for an urban oasis of holistic health, wellbeing and community in the middle of the concrete jungle of Chicago. I wrote a business plan, quit my “day job” of 8 years in arts administration and took the leap with confidence, energy, a little bit of savings and a generous loan from my parents and two uncles. 5 years later, in 2013, I locked the door to the beautiful vintage storefront for the last time, dropped the keys through the mail slot, drove the Zipcar packed with my last few personal items halfway to my new apartment and then pulled over underneath the el train tracks to sob uncontrollably, saying good-bye at last to my dream. What followed was an intense period of mourning and probably the first time I have ever truly experienced depression. I was bankrupt, not eating well, at a loss for what to do next and, in fact, completely uninspired to do much of anything, especially teach yoga. Most days I just wanted to stay under the covers and hide. So what happened next? I really enjoy… confronting the fear… going through it, because I find that's where life is. It's confronting what you're most terrified of and working through it and getting to the other side of that. So I'm confronting my fear all the time. ~Jennifer Gardner The thrill of the “doing”… I met Jennifer Gardner because she took a risk. Already a litigating lawyer with a thriving private practice in Los Angeles, Jennifer (who is also an outstanding photographer BTW), decided to follow her curiosity and create a podcast, called RoamHowl. And she reached out to me, someone whose show she had heard, but whom she had never met for help in launching! RoamHowl is a series of conversations with multi-talented, multi-passionate people doing really cool, interesting things. Jennifer is out to discover stories and communicate them to help her listeners “find their pack” and to debunk the myth that you either are creative or you're not, and to show that you are not defined solely by your profession — but you can in, in fact, be more. “When you are operating from the acceptance of your whole self, YOU get to choose your path and actions freely, because there is nothing behind you from which you are running.” ~Andrea Klunder, on liberation from the Shadow What are all the things about yourself that you would NEVER share on social media? Ever since editing my interview with artist Sara Zalek in Episode 030, this topic of the Shadow Self has been nagging at me because it comes up a LOT in the type of work I do and I always THINK I want to explore it but… This Shadow is also deeply complicit with impostor syndrome to stop me from working on creating new content or developing marketing strategies or recording episodes. For example, these days, I tell myself I'm going to work on my forthcoming Podcast Envy training program and course in the evening and then I walk through the door and feel sleepy, my head is cloudy and all I can think about is dinner, a bath and snuggling up next to my kitty to CONSUME content (rather than create.) And I end stuffing down my own shadowy self watching a newly engrossing glossy TV series about OTHER peoples'/characters' shadow sides on Netflix or HBO… (Big Little Lies anyone?) And then I feel like a failure. The thing I love most and also the hardest thing about entrepreneurship and sustaining creative ventures like this podcast is that you cannot do it (and keep doing it) without at some point having to really take a hard look at yourself, delve deeply into this shadow, understand it, learn to work with it and then… grow. I remember lamenting to one of my best friends on the phone after a particularly difficult season of rejections and failures both of personal and professional nature… “God, haven't I grown enough yet?! I'm sick of it. When do I just get to coast?” So what is this Shadow of which I speak? "Whenever there's a dare in my life, I say, 'Oh yeah? You're going to dare me? Then I'm going to show you that I can do it!"; ~Sara Zalek, on creating the first Post-Butoh Festival in Chicago (after being told it could never work) We are in a moment… I discovered Sara Zalek's work through my Edwin Ruiz (my audio engineer and founder of Mondo Machine) when he was producing video for Butoh Chicago and again during a multi-media experience of Expanded Cinema when he was collaborating with Full Spectrum Features. Sara's performance that night was the highlight of the evening. Edgy, uncomfortable, mysterious, beautiful –– she integrated a dance between rigid and fluid, slow and manic body movement along with a colorful analog video experiment projected behind her and electronic and acoustic music accompanying her highly improvisational experience that somehow was both coherent and evocative. This was a collaborative piece called Still Life with Hanna Brock and Sara Goodman and, in fact, a lot of Sara's work is collaborative and “in the moment,” exploring the life journey, full of ups and downs and dark and light. She seeks to challenge or provoke her audience with the question: Are you going to embrace your whole self? Are you going to have memories and associations while watching this performance that have this potential for transforming your way of being and thinking in the world? “It's safe and OK for you to relax and take in that all those things that happened, they're over and you don't have to be stuck there. ” ~from How to Wrap Up Loose Ends of 2016 and Start the New Year Fresh! By Tapas Fleming, Founder TAT® I declare that I DISLIKE New Year's resolutions. And I dislike the pervasive marketing message “New Year, New You” even MORE! What was wrong with the OLD me??? What I DO like is opportunities to be reflective, fresh starts, setting intentions and creating visions. I like getting really quiet and listening to my own inner wisdom guide voice, taking a deep breath and taking a step in a new direction. I have some favorite New Year rituals that have replaced resolutions (that never really seem to stick anyway). And because one of the themes of The Creative Impostor is community, I decided to crowdsource some new new year rituals and exercises share with you and shake things up for 2017. My Favorite Ritual: Gratitude 108 Take a sheet of paper or your journal and number it from 1 to 108.Or better yet, get a preprinted sheet here (because it takes a long time to write 108 numbers)! Write down (without stopping) 108 things for which you are grateful. It's just like a mad-lib full of nouns: could be people, places, things, ideas, experiences — just keep writing until you reach 108. If you get stuck, just think of any small thing that has touched you in the year. And when you reach the end, sit quietly, take a few deep breaths and notice how you feel. “I believe the role of an empath is that of a healer, a bringer of truth. someone that has reclaimed their own truth and can create space for other people to be able to more deeply connect with their own truth as well.” ~Lysa Black Emotions are communication from our own soul. I met Lysa through the Singularity Circle, a mastermind of creative feminine entrepreneurs facilitated by Isabelle Rizo from episode 026. When I first received Lysa's 2nd book Divine Purpose, I was thinking okay… here comes the “woo woo,” but it's actually so grounded in her personal experience AND the experiences of clients with whom she has worked over the years. And then when we did our interview, we had so many technical difficulties with Skype connections and internet and microphones and delays, well, I wasn't sure what we were going to end up with AND it took me a long while to edit the interview. “Enroll people into the story, engage them into the story so that they feel like they're a part of something greater than themselves.” ~Isabelle Rizo When you get clear on your story, you can know it internally, have it manifest externally, and align it with your online presence. I met Isabelle in July of 2016 and signed up to work with her almost right away in the Singularity Circle, a mastermind for creative entrepreneurs dedicated to a more feminine approach to business (i.e. NOT “hustle til you die”) Isabelle has a gift for teasing out what it is you're actually offering of value to people based on your own, singular, unique story and experiences. I love her direct, no-nonsense approach and firm, but loving nudges out of the vagueness of the comfort zone. And I think you're really going to love what she has to say in Episode 026. “If you work hard, you sacrifice everything, you stay focused on your goals, and you burn the midnight oil, you are going to be a success — I'm just going to call BS on that because it's still coming from our societal conditioning of celebrating hustle until we die. And that is not okay.” ~Isabelle Rizo In this episode, you'll learn about: How to craft your unique story so that you can develop a clear brand and help other people by inviting them into your world Aligning your online presence with your internal world Sharing your “poop” so that you become more real, identifiable and authentic in your brand The dangers of people-pleasing and the freedom of setting boundaries The necessity and magic of playing in the gray area of your life & work Self-care, commitment to self and validating yourself from the inside out How an innovative approach to business that balances feminine and masculine energy might look The problem with “hustle” and obsession with output and productivity Isabelle's morning mindset work — including a surprising take on gratitude journaling & manifestation Connect with Isabelle… Facebook * Twitter * Instagram * Website “You might be a luxury brand, but we're going to talk about your poop too… we want to acknowledge that we're human and we make mistakes and failure is part of the thing and we have a shadow part of our self and a light part of our self.” ~Isabelle Rizo Show Notes Galore: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com Magic Page! “I didn't know or understand what was happening or why — I was just doing downward dog and shoulder stand and feeling… better.” ~Andrea, on yoga practice What if you had a direct line to uncovering your life's purpose? One of my favorite things to do in my life and work is to take potentially weird, esoteric or “out there” concepts and ideas, explore and test them with what I like to call “open minded skepticism” and then translate and share them with people who might not otherwise seek them out, but can REALLY make use of them. So, let me give this one a try! Whereas the Paper Planner I featured in the previous episode is about as down-to-earth practical as one can get, today's tool, a technique called Yoga Nidra, is about as far on the other end of the spectrum as possible. And while it may sound a little woo-woo to some, I'm going to strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and maybe even try it out for yourself as it can be an incredibly useful and in some ways easy method to gain direct access to your own inner well of deep creativity, and at the very least, an excellent way to truly relax and let go of stress… who couldn't use some of that?
