Send us a textA powerful convergence of art and advocacy unfolds in this episode of Queer Voices as two transformative leaders share their visions for Houston's LGBTQ+ community.Pulitzer Prize finalist Lisa DeMoore invites listeners into her boundary-defying theatrical world, where traditional storytelling meets immersive art installation. Her fourth collaboration with Catastrophic Theater, "The Frozen Section," imagines a surreal post-apocalyptic grocery store where survivors maintain humanity through collective performance. "We meet the people who are the workers and the people who are the shoppers," DeMoore explains, revealing how this strange microcosm explores community resilience when societal structures collapse. The playwright's description of her previous work—including a six-hour installation where audiences witnessed a fabric forest appear and vanish—showcases her unique approach to creating theater that functions as both poetry and social commentary.Meanwhile, Montrose Center CEO Avery Belyeu reflects on her first year leading Houston's largest LGBTQ+ resource hub during increasingly challenging political times. With previous leadership roles at Lambda Legal and The Trevor Project, Bellew brings both professional expertise and personal perspective as a transgender woman navigating the current landscape. Her vision for the Center emphasizes community connection as the ultimate solution to political scapegoating and potential funding threats. "I think that's where it's so important for all of us to make sure we're taking care of ourselves," Bellew advises, highlighting the Center's comprehensive services for 55,000 annual clients across all age groups—from youth programming to senior housing. The conversation weaves between artistic expression and practical advocacy as both guests demonstrate how Houston's queer community creates resilience through creativity, connection, and care. Whether through DeMoore's surreal theatrical worlds or the Montrose Center's tangible support services, this episode reveals how LGBTQ+ Houstonians continue building futures despite uncertainty.Don't miss "The Frozen Section" running March 28-April 19 at The Match, and mark your calendars for the Montrose Center's circus-themed "Empowering Our Future" gala on April 26, where you can directly support vital youth services while celebrating community joy.Queer Voices airs in Houston Texas on 90.1FM KPFT and is heard as a podcast here. We speak with the Montrose Center's Executive Director Ann Robinson.  She will be retiring soon and we catch up with her about her 35 years at the Center and what is next.  The Montrose Center opened in 1978 as Montrose Counseling Center (MCC), after the widely successful Town Meeting I at the Astro Arena. The Center faced many financial burdens in its formative years, particularly because of the high cost of providing health insurance for its employees living with HIV/AIDS. In the 1990s the Center became one of the first places in Houston to offer temporary housing to gay men and transgender people. In 2013, the Center changed its name from Montrose Counseling Center to the Montrose Center, as services had evolved beyond just counseling and wanted people to feel they could come to the Center for services other than mental health. Today, the Montrose Center serves as a community hub, with a long, proud history of empowering LGBTQ Houston since 1978.Guest: Ann Robinsonhttps://montrosecenter.org/We get up close and personal with Kendra Walker, a dynamo businesswoman, entrepreneur, and community leader hailing from Jackson, Mississippi. Rising from her humble beginnings to the top, Kendra opens up about her dedication to self-care and how her unstoppable work ethic has catapulted her to success. Uncover more about her upcoming events in Houston, her unprecedented contributions to Pride Houston, and her tireless initiatives aimed at supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. And as we wrap up, we cast a lens onto the grim reality of Anti-LGBTQ Abuses in Uganda, providing a broader perspective on the global challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Kendra's thoughts on this issue, and her challenges to us all to step up as active change-makers, are not to be missed. What's it all about? I love how Jeff and Dan have built Key Capture Energy to be a leading player in the utility scale energy storage sector since founding not many years ago. I first met and worked with Jeff Bishop three years ago, and we recorded one of the early episodes of the podcast. So much has changed in the business and the sector I wanted to share that journey, and Jeff's thoughts and insights for energy storage for the next three to five years, and his insights into important leadership and diversity challenges in the sector. About Jeff Bishop Jeff Bishop is a clean energy entrepreneur and a leader in the US energy transition, focusing on the intersection of finance, commercial, technology and policy. Jeff is the CEO and co-founder of Key Capture Energy, one of America's largest owner/operators of stand-alone battery storage projects. Prior to founding Key Capture Energy, Jeff held senior positions at Brookfield Renewable and EDP Renewables – two of the largest renewable energy companies in the United States. In these roles, he was responsible for financial analysis, corporate development, and market design -- focusing extensively on building new markets for renewable energy to compete in. Jeff got his start in renewable energy working for a wind energy developer in Morocco in 2002. Jeff has served on, and often led, the boards of clean energy advocacy organizations at the federal, regional, and state level -- including the Energy Storage Association, Renewable Energy Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Coalition, the Maine Renewable Energy Association, and the Alliance for Clean Energy New York. Jeff holds a MBA from Chicago Booth and a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University. He is currently on leave from his Masters in Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Utah. As a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, Jeff spent a year researching renewable energy failures in Uganda and Botswana. Jeff was a Forbes Thirty Under Thirty – Energy award winner in the program's inaugural year in 2011. Jeff is a mediocre skier and a tenacious bicycle commuter (and includes in his public transportation advocacy a previous board membership at BikeHouston). Jeff and his partner, Boyu, live in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jeff is active in the broader LGBT equality movement; he served on the board for the Montrose Center, a non-profit empowering Houston's LGBT community, as well as co-chaired the Rice University LGBT Alumni Association. Following the concert, guests can go to the Stone House to receive a special pre-made take out meal for $30. Tickets are available on their website at www.mc4arts.com. Masking and social distancing rules will be observed. Now, our feature story. Search teams have located the bodies of three people who were buried under about 20 feet of snow and debris from a Monday avalanche. The avalanche swept down as they skied the backcountry between Silverton and Ouray. The victims had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday night. The three were in a group skiing near Mineral Creek and Ophir Pass on Monday, near a feature known as The Nose. While they were there, an avalanche was triggered from an elevation of about 11,500 feet. It carried them away, along with a fourth member of the group. The other skiers were able to locate the fourth person. That person reportedly sustained minor injuries. Search and rescue teams from multiple jurisdictions responded to search for the missing skiers, but found severe conditions — and ongoing avalanche danger. These conditions were so perilous that snowmobiles and other equipment used for the rescue became entrapped in heavy snow on Tuesday. Search operations were suspended Tuesday afternoon out of safety concerns. They continued on Wednesday, and Ophir Pass was closed to facilitate efforts as ground teams worked sunup to sundown. Teams from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, emergency management, San Juan County Search and Rescue, La Plata County Search and Rescue, Silverton Mountain Medical and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center scoured the debris fields, ultimately locating the three skiers buried more than 20 feet deep. All three skiers were equipped with locator beacons, which helped searchers to find their bodies. The rugged terrain and conditions meant that a helicopter team was required to actually remove the bodies. Back in December avalanches claimed 3 lives in the region in just one weekend.  If you're going out don't forget to Check the forecast at colorado.gov/av and have proper equipment, including a locator beacon, probe pole and shovel. Always share planned routes and intended timeframes with at least one other person. Stay safe Montrose. Now, some local history. This week's local history is brought to you by England Fence. J.C. Frees started the first store in Montrose. When the city moved north to be closer to the railroad tracks, Frees moved his store too. It was built in 1905 it later housed the Montrose Grocery and Bakery. Ralph Daniel Carver Jr. Ralph Jr. was born in Denver. He was the oldest of three children. Ralph grew up on a 5-acre mini-farm with his family. His mom raised turkeys which were quite popular at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ralph and his siblings also raised white rabbits, cows, and chickens. After graduating from school he married Lucinda Carhart. Together they had four children. In 1960 Ralph opened his first C&C Auto Parts, and in 1963 he moved the family to Montrose and opened a second C&C Auto Parts. He owned and operated both stores, traveling to between them weekly. The drive was time consuming and this was when Ralph developed his interest in flying. He became a pilot in 1970. He loved flying and often would take one of his children with him on the weekly trips. He opened C&C Auto Parts number 3 in Delta in 1977. All three boys grew up working in the stores and learned the value of a hard day's work.  Ralph was an advocate of higher education and was instrumental in bringing Colorado Western College to Montrose. He served as president of the board in 1972. He was also involved in the start of the Delta-Montrose Vo-Tech Center. He felt that getting a higher education or learning a trade should be available to every young adult. He always said that an education can never be taken away. Ralph's marriage to Lucinda ended, and in 1985, he married Irene Thompson. They celebrated 27 years together before she passed away. They enjoyed traveling whenever possible.  Ralph gradually sold off his three auto parts stores and retired in 1995 to ”return to his roots” and farm his acreage on Spring Creek Road. He especially enjoyed having many grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit the farm.  He was proud of being a farmer. He was a true Christian, a believer. He was considerate, careful, and thoughtful. Ralph was not a man of many words, but he was a man of his word and will be dearly missed. The LGBTQ Task Force interim communications director Cathy RennaWe speak with Cathy Renna, interim communications director of the National LGBTQ Task Force. Cathy Renna joins the National LGBTQ Task Force as Interim Communications Director but is no stranger to the organization and its incredible staff. As a longtime supporter and contractor on projects over the years and a regular presence at Creating Change, she has been part of the Task Force's extended family for decades. The first real media training she ever attended was in fact at Creating Change in the early 90's, a new activist finding her way as a volunteer at the then glaad chapter in Washington, D.C. She has stayed close to the Task Force ever since.Renna is a veteran in the communications industry, and currently serves as the Principal of Target Cue. Since her time at GLAAD in the 1990's and early aughts, Cathy has executed her particular expertise in crisis and strategic communications, playing a central role in shaping nearly all major issues affecting the LGBTQ community, from the beating death of Matthew Shepard in 1998 to the fight for marriage equality and the repeal of “Don't Ask Don't Tell”. She most recently worked with the team that coordinated historic coverage for WorldPride/Stonewall 50, working with NYC Pride. After leaving her position at GLAAD as National News Media Director, Cathy joined Fenton Communications, where she served as its New York office Media Director from 2004 to 2006 and worked with clients ranging from MoveOn.org to the American Lung Association to Nobel Peace Prize recipient Wangari Maathai. She went on to found Renna Communications and then co-founded Target Cue in 2013. In her near 30 years of media relations and activism experience, Cathy has garnered placements in every major media outlet in the U.S. and internationally, including The New York Times, USA Today, The Associated Press, BBC, The Guardian and the Washington Post. She continues to be a sought after spokesperson for LGBTQ+ issues, and has appeared on the O'Reilly Factor, CNN, MSNBC, and Good Morning America.Renna lives in Montclair, New Jersey with her partner Karen and their ornery but lovable cat Winston. She is the proud Mom of Rosemary, just starting high school and living in Houston, TX, where she is a budding artist and part of the local LGBTQ community, helped start a GSA in her middle school and attends the HATCH program at the Montrose Center. The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. We are building a future where everyone can be free to be their entire selves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress we've made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. These barriers must go. That's why the Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across our nation to deliver a world where you can be you. Guest: Cathy Rennahttps://www.thetaskforce.org

12/1/18 World AIDS Day Observance In commemoration of World AIDS Day, the Rothko Chapel hosted a morning observance to show support and solidarity with the millions of people living with and impacted by HIV/AIDS. This program was offered in partnership with The oH Project: Oral Histories of HIV/AIDS in Houston, Harris County, and Southeast Texas. The morning program included live music, personal testimonials, and guided reflection. Gregory Hamilton, a community educator and advocate working at ASP Cares Pharmacy shared information on the state of the battle against HIV in Houston and Texas. Isis Torrente, member of the Latino HIV Task Force, Greater Houston chapter of the Positive Women's Network, and Ryan White Planning Council spoke on her experience within the HIV community in Houston. Andrew Edmonson, board member of The oH Project, shared information about the oral histories they have been collecting since 2016. Moments of reflection were led by Reverend Diane McGehee, Senior Pastor of Bering Memorial UMC, and music was performed throughout by John Edward Ross on acoustic guitar. Established by the World Health Organization in 1988 as the first ever global health day, World AIDS Day is an occasion to reflect on the more than 35 million people who have died from HIV/AIDS since the virus was first identified in 1984, and a time to consider how to better care for the 36.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS, and their families, friends and loved ones who have been deeply impacted. The oH Project (The Oral History Project) was founded in 2015 to collect, preserve, and make available the painful, heroic, and inspiring experiences of people impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Houston, Harris County, and Southeast Texas. The organization is capturing the personal experiences of 100 long term survivors, physicians, activists, religious and political leaders and others in order to preserve the personal and institutional history of Houston’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These important materials is available to all, including those who need source material for research and educational purposes, at Rice University’s prestigious Woodson Research Center, ranked among “the 20 most impressive special collections,” according to Open Education Database.
