The Well Seasoned Librarian : A conversation about Food, Food Writing and more.
. Joanne Weir is a James Beard Award-winning cookbook author, international cooking teacher, restaurateur and renowned chef. Joanne's passion for cooking was stoked by a legacy of life in the kitchen. A fourth-generation professional chef, Joanne's great-grandmother operated a restaurant in Boston at the turn of the century called Pilgrim's Pantry. This enthusiasm for food was passed down to her grandfather and then to her mother, a professional chef and caterer who worked with the legendary cookbook author, Charlotte Turgeon. Joanne continues that same tradition. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Joanne went on to teach Fine Arts in Boston. She then found her way back to the kitchen. Joanne spent five years cooking with Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California and studied with Madeleine Kamman in France, where she was awarded a Master Chef Diploma with honors. Her ultimate calling is teaching others to cook in the United States and throughout the world -- Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, UK, South America, Mexico and Canada. In 2013, Joanne won the Tour Operator of the Year Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals for her highly acclaimed Culinary Journeys. She spends several months of the year touring the globe sharing her extensive cooking background with regard to nutrition, food theory and technique, in particular Mediterranean cuisine and the regional foods of the U.S. Joanne has a twenty-five-year history as a host for her cooking shows, which air nationally on Public Television and CreateTV. In her award-winning television series, Joanne Weir's Cooking Class and Joanne Weir Gets Fresh, Joanne's love of teaching students how to cook is shared with a national TV audience. Her current television series, “Joanne Weir Plates and Places” won Best New Series from Taste Awards in 2019. Fifty-two new episodes feature segments filmed throughout the Mediterranean, the Rhine and Danube Rivers, Washington and California, as well as in her kitchen studio in San Francisco. Joanne's talents were brought to life in the PBS series "Weir Cooking in the Wine Country," shot on location in Napa Valley. Her companion book, Weir's More Cooking in the Wine Country (Simon & Schuster, 2001) garnered a James Beard Award nomination and an IACP Cookbook Award nomination. Joanne's adopted hometown, San Francisco, is the culinary setting for "Weir Cooking in the City," her 26-part PBS series and companion book (Simon & Schuster, 2004) for which she received a James Beard Award. She is also the author of Wine Country Cooking (Ten Speed Press, 2008), Tequila: A Guide to Types, Flights, Cocktails and Bites (Ten Speed Press, 2009), and Cooking Confidence (Taunton, 2012). Jace and Jay run down some of the titles they have read for the week of July 28, 2021. All of the reviews are spoiler-free. There are a ton of great books this week and Jace shouts out a few more titles you might want to be on the lookout for. Amazing Fantasy #1 - A fantastical fantasy world that several Marvel heroes are transported to. We expect they will find each other and team up at some point, but how did they get there in the first place and why? Writer/Artist - Kaare Andrews, Letterer - Joe Sabino Amazing Spider-Man #71 - Sinister War kicks off, but we are missing the sinister. No Sinister Six, no Savage Six and no action really. It seems strange as Nick Spencer clearly needs all the space he can get to wrap up his story, but this one feels like a wasted issue. Maybe it's just poor pacing? Writer - Nick Spencer, Artists - Federico Vicentini with Federico Sabbatino, Color Artist - Alex Sinclair, Letterer - Joe Caramagna Phantom on the Scan #4 - A horror books that feels more like a suspense novel, we have several people on the run who were experimented on very early on in their lives. Now it seems those lives may be ending because one of the subjects of that experiment has decided to take out the rest. Can the others team up to find the answers in time? Writer - Cullen Bunn, Artist - Mark Torres, Letter - Dave Sharpe Daredevil #32 - An absolutely action-packed issue of Daredevil as we see Matt starting to show signs of coming out of the funk he has been in that lead him to become incarcerated. Also Elektra is hot on the trail of Bullseye but she may not like what she finds when she to him. What a great last page! Jay's Book of the Week Writer - Chip Zdarsky, Penciller - Mike Hawthorne, Inker - Adriano Benedetto, Color Artist - Marcio Menyz, Letterer - Clayton Cowles Made in Korea #3 - Jesse has quickly bonded with the parents who have adopted her, but the doctor who created her is out to do whatever he can to get Jesse back. Meanwhile, some of the kids at Jesse's school clearly have nefarious plans and have taken advantage to Jesse's naivete to use her in those plans. Writer - Jeremy Holt, Artist - George Schall, Letterer - Adam Wollet Department of Truth #11 - The Bigfoot arc comes to a surprising end as Hawke does something that seems out of character. Plenty of emotion in this one as we are faced with the question of whether it only takes one person with an absolute iron clad belief in something to make it real. Writer - James Tynion IV, Artist - Martin Simmonds, Letterer - Aditya Bidikar Black Cat #8 - Just how does this story tie in with the Infinite Destinies storyline playing out in the Marvel Annuals? Does Black Cat know more about the Infinity Stones that she appears to? Tons of action in this one, but it all sets up more questions than answers Writer - Jed MacKay, Artist - C.F. Villa, Color Artist - Brian Reber, Letterer - Ferrran Delgado Fantastic Four #34 - The aftermath of Zora's betrayal has devastating effects for those attending the wedding. Ultimately it may be Johnny Storm who pas the highest price. Once again Doom appears to be pulling the strings from behind the scene and one has to wonder of Doom ever truly planned on getting married. Writer - Dan Slott, Artist - R.B. Silva, Color Artist - Jesus Aburtov, Letterer - Joe Caramagna Black Widow #9 - Black Widow continues to show why it was chosen as Best New Series by the Eisner's. Kelly Thompson gives us perfectly paced action, interspersed with wonderful banter between Natasha and Yelena. The supporting casts all get sufficient time to show us who they are and the art by is kinetic, slick and gorgeous. Writer - Kelly Thompson, Artists - Elena Casagrande & Rafael De Latorre, Inkers - Elisabetta D'Amico. Color Artist - Jordie Bellaire, Letterer - Cory Petit
This week: Part 1 of Discussion about 2021's Eisner Nominees, and covering new comics this week: "Karmen" #5, "Mamo" #1, "Ordinary Gods" #1, and "Wynd" #8. On this week's Comics Syllabus, we start with “Polybagged,” (video episode here) covering some new comics in shops this week (July 7, 2021), talking about: "Karmen" #5 by Guillem March (Image), “Mamo" #1 by Sas Milledge (Boom!), “Ordinary Gods” #1 by Kyle Higgins and Felipe Watanabe (Image), and “Wynd” #8 by James Tynion IV (Boom!) with mentions of other titles. [CORRECTION: In my review of “Ordinary Gods” #1, I mistakenly attributed the backup prose story at the end, “Flip of a Coin,” to the comic's writer, Kyle Higgins. In fact, the backup story was written by Jana Tropper. Apologies for the misattribution!] Then, we talk through about half the list of Eisner Nominations for 2021 (video episode here), including Best Continuing Series, Best Limited Series, Best New Series, Best Single Issue, Best Short Story, Best Writer, and Best Writer/Artist. The Writer Files: Writing, Productivity, Creativity, and Neuroscience
#PodcastersForJustice The creator, executive producer, and showrunner of the award-winning TV series The Handmaid’s Tale, Bruce Miller, spoke with me about his storied career as a TV writer/producer, what it's like to work with author Margaret Atwood, and adapting a modern classic for the small screen. The Emmy award-winning TV writer and producer has worked on dozens of shows and movies (including Medium, Eureka, Alphas, and The 100), and got his start working on NBC's long-running hit ER in the early '90s. Miller's adaptation of Margaret Atwood's prescient, critically acclaimed 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale – considered by many to be a modern classic of dystopian literature – is a drama about a "... totalitarian society [that] subjects fertile women, called 'Handmaids,' into child-bearing slavery." In its first season, the show won multiple Emmy awards – including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for Miller – and became the first on a streaming platform to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series (beating out nominees House of Cards, The Crown, Stranger Things from Netflix, HBO’s Westworld, AMC’s Better Call Saul, and NBC’s This Is Us). "Handmaid’s” has gone on to win the Peabody Award; a Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Drama; Critics Choice Award for Best Drama Series; the PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama; two WGA Awards, for Best Drama Series and Best New Series; was honored by AFI as one of the top ten TV programs of the year, and garnered dozens of Emmy nominations. The show has been picked up for a fourth season by Hulu. Please help us learn more about you by completing this short 7-question survey If you’re a fan of The Writer Files, please click subscribe to automatically see new interviews. In this file Bruce Miller and I discussed: How getting "fired" from so many gigs helped his career The brilliance of Margaret Atwood and the influence it had on both the writer and the adaptation Why TV production is all about schedule and writing is the opposite A day in the life of a TV writer Why he doesn't believe in tables in the writer's room And the one thing you have to be able to do when you get your big break Show Notes: Bruce Miller on IMDb The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu Bruce Miller on Twitter Kelton Reid on Twitter #PodcastersForJustice Anti-racism Resources Donate to any of the following: Minnesota Freedom Fund Black Visions Collective Campaign Zero Black Lives Matter Podcasts to subscribe to: 1619 (New York Times) About Race Code Switch (NPR) Intersectionality Matters! hosted by Kimberlé Crenshaw Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast Pod For The Cause (from The Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights) Pod Save the People (Crooked Media) Seeing White Articles to read: "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Don’t understand the protests? On this episode the guys are joined by Kip Campbell from Red Arrow TV. Kip and the guys share some funny laughs and talk about some major events in the news (GUNS and Politics). In this great Episode learn how Kip started the show and much more. Check out Kip http://bit.ly/Redarrow About Kip - Kip grew up in the country near the banks of the James River in Central Virginia and spent his days bow hunting, fishing and playing sports at Fork Union Military Academy. Kip knew early on he wanted to work with a weapon in his hand, so the military, law enforcement or pro-hunter were the only jobs that would be acceptable in his mind. The last option seemed pretty far fetched... seeing as how he didn't come from a "big buck" part of the country and had no tie in with any hunting companies. After high school, he attended Lynchburg College where it all fell into place. Playing on the Lynchburg Lacrosse team took up much of his time at school but he continued to bow hunt whenever he could. In his second year, he switched his major to communications and started making short films and hunting videos. This gave Kip less time in the classroom and more time in the field. He also found that editing was something he really enjoyed. He, and his wife Kat, formed Shotfish Productions Inc. and started filming what would be the first pilot episode of Red Arrow®. Red Arrow has come a long way since then! He now has two girls: Addie, 6, and Izzie, 3. He loves sharing the outdoors with all his girls, and has even gotten the 3 year old pulling back a bow! Red Arrow has been on Outdoor Channel now for the past two years, and moving into Season 7, remains in their Prime Time Sunday Night Block. Red Arrow has been up for 5 Outdoor Channel Golden Moose Awards the past two years in the following categories: Best New Series, Best Commercial Production, Best Comedy Skit, Best Videography, and Best Bird Hunting. Red Arrow also competed in a filming/hunting reality TV show put on by Campbell's Cameras called Top Outdoor Producer. The other competitors during that show were Buck Commander, Heartland Bowhunter, Raven 6, and Endless Season just to name a few. Team Red Arrow came out on top as winner of Top Outdoor Producer. Red Arrow also is proud to have a part of its family, friend and fellow bowhunter Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band. He gets on as many hunts as his hectic schedule will allow and also provides Red Arrow with original music by the artists on his label- Southern Ground Artists- such as Blackberry Smoke, Sonia Leigh, Levi Lowry, Wood Bros.etc making Red Arrow stand out with use of popular music. ► Subscribe to BHP http://bit.ly/2Djy5Tl ► Follow us on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2tAEqu3 ► Follow us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2FBdNa4 ► Book a Live testlab Show! email us at info@bowhunterplanet.com Episode Powered by: ► Vanguard: http://bit.ly/vanbhp ► Walk on Archery Targets: http://bit.ly/WALKBHP ► Video Credit: BHP MEDIA - http://bit.ly/_BHP ► Join the Ambassador Program - http://bit.ly/amb_bhp ► Listen to the BHP PODCAST - http://bit.ly/2FH8QzM ► ITUNES - http://bit.ly/BHPpodcast ► SoundCloud - http://bit.ly/Sdcloudbhp Thanks for watching, we hope you enjoyed.

Alex Gansa, creator of "Homeland," takes us on a behind the scenes journey of his career as an award winning writer in Hollywood. He and Co-creator Howard Gordon, began their professional lives in out west as Test Prep instructors for the children of Hollywood elite. From there they went on to write for television. Hear how these two young upstarts went from wide eyed hopefuls to being two of the most successful writers and show runners working today. Gansa shares deep personal stories of his struggles and successes and if you love "Homeland" you will learn about how the show came together, casting stories and never before heard anecdotes from the set of the Showtime award winning series. Alex Gansa is the showrunner, co-creator and executive producer of Showtime’s thriller HOMELAND, starring Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin. HOMELAND premiered in October 2011 to critical acclaim and the highest debut ratings for a freshman drama on the network. HOMELAND won the 2012 and 2013 Golden Globe for Best Television Series, and a 2012 Emmy in six different categories including Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series and Best Drama Series. Additional honors include two 2012 WGA awards in the categories of Best New Series and Episodic Drama, 2013 Producers Guild Award, the Peabody Award, Television Critics’ Association Award, Critics’ Choice Television Award and was named one of AFI’s Top Ten Programs of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. His other work includes the hit series THE X FILES for Fox, SISTERS for NBC, and the critically acclaimed series MAXIMUM BOB that he created for ABC. Gansa lives in Los Angeles.
Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:02:40 - Setup of interview 00:06:49 - Interview with Jeff Lemire 01:33:07 - Wrap up 01:34:37 - Contact us On this interview episode Derek and Andy are excited to have Jeff Lemire as their guest. His new graphic novel, Roughneck, has just been released by Simon & Schuster's Gallery 13 imprint, and he has a new ongoing series through Image Comics, Royal City. The guys talk with Jeff about those works, particularly their place within Lemire's growing body of writing, but they also ask him about his other current ongoing series, such as Descender (with Dustin Nguyen on art), Black Hammer (along with Dean Ormston), and the miniseries A.D.: After Death (written by Scott Snyder). A lot of ground is covered in this interview, including revelations on the early origins of Roughneck, the long-range plans for Royal City, the themes and characters that seem to be woven throughout Jeff's oeuvre, the curious links between Descender and Adam Strange, and Jeff's thoughts on "slice of life" stories and their reception within the comics-reading community. And here's a fun fact! Jeff Lemire was actually the focus of the Two Guys' very first creator spotlight way back in Episode 6 of The Comics Alternative, and at the time Andy and Derek thought there was almost too much to talk about in terms of Jeff's output. But now almost five years later, and with so many more titles under Jeff's belt, those assumptions seem amusing in hindsight. It's important to note that Andy and Derek recorded their interview with Jeff the day before this year's Eisner Award nominations were announced, where he has landed in the Best New Series and Best Writer categories (both for Black Hammer). This is why no one brings up the Eisners at any time in the conversation. But a big CONGRATULATIONS to Jeff for this well-deserved attention!

Gather ‘round, True Believers. We’re getting all geeked up for the Rose City Comic Con, Sept 10–11. It’s always a hot ticket, given the critical mass of comics creators making their home around these parts now, but we were especially charmed by this year’s crop.Image Comics Moving to Portland - 1:10We start things off with some breaking news. Rumors have been flying that we were the first to confirm: Image Comics is moving to Portland. Image is the third largest publisher in the industry with annual sales around $50 million. Relocating is kind of a no-brainer, given the pool of high-powered Image creators already living here. We explore what sets Image apart (and makes it a prime team-up with Portland), before sitting down for an exclusive interview with the company’s publisher, Eric Stephenson.Bandette Steals Hearts, Jewels, Awards - 10:53The husband and wife creative team of Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover are getting ready to publish “The House of the Green Mask,” the third volume of their effervescent creation, “Bandette.” The series won two Eisner awards for best digital comics series in 2013 and this year. Bandette is a pert, teen-aged thief living a barely-closeted life of crime — the Audrey Hepburn of master thieves. She steals to delight herself, leaping across the rooftops of the city to tweak the noses and egos of the real bad guys. We talk with Tobin and Coover about the pleasures of fleshing out the world around a different kind of action heroine.Blast Off For Bitch Planet - 19:07Kelly Sue DeConnick is riding high with a comic series she created that made a lot of best-of-the-year lists for 2015, and continued going strong this year. “Bitch Planet” is about an all-female, interstellar prison colony in a not-too-distant future. Society sends women there for a variety of crimes — collectively categorized as non-compliance. We talk to Kelly about how she handles the series’ satirical edge, and chat with artist Taki Soma, who did a single-issue story for the series last winter. If you like what you hear in this week’s show, the extended version is right here on our Soundcloud feed. The Loveliest Horror Story of the Year - 27:30Portland comic book artist Tyler Crook and writer Cullen Bunn are behind the series “Harrow County,” a tale of a gentle teenage girl named Emmy, whose coming-of-age is overshadowed by her realization that she’s connected to a deceased witch named Hester Beck and a wide range of ghosts and spirits. We talk to Crook and Bunn about the gorgeous watercolors and heavy psychodrama they use to bring the story to life. “Harrow County” was nominated for an Eisner award for Best New Series, and it’s been optioned for development as a TV series on Syfy Channel.Comic City USA - 38:09Oregon’s comic book community is part of a much wider mosaic of creative work — animation, political cartooning, comic strips. Think Out Loud recently talked to some of the minds behind the Oregon Historical Society’s new exhibition covering artists in all these disciplines, Comic City USA. We hear from long-time creators on the Portland scene Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett and OHS curator Lori Erickson. You can hear the entire conversation here.Good Guys Win: Ibrahim Moustafa - 43:08We listen back to our February interview with artist Ibrahim Moustafa. He’s racking up a string of solid titles, including his widely-read Himalayan thriller, “High Crimes”, with Chris Sebela. He also shares some news about his brand-new series for Stela Comics — a spy thriller called “Jaeger”, about a French-Algerian agent hunting down Nazis in a post-World-War-II setting. Stella series are designed specifically for smart phones, which posed new kinds of challenges.
And the Eisner for Best New Series goes to… PAPER GIRLS by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang! We took a look at the first story arc in issues 1-5 and tried to piece together what we could from this bizarre time travel story. The room was pretty split as we tried to make the case for and against their Eisner win. #SquirrelGirlForever #NotMyEisners
